Abstract: Epoxy/carbon fibre reinforced composites were produced by means of e-beam irradiation through a pulsed 10MeV electron beam accelerator. The matrix consisted of a difunctional epoxy monomer (DGEBA) and an initiator of cationic polymerisation, while the reinforcement was a unidirectional high modulus carbon fibre fabric. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was carried out in order to determine the cross-linking degree. The analysis pointed out a nonuniformity in the cross-linking degree of the e-beam cured panels, with the formation of clusters at low T g (glass transition temperature) and clusters at high T g . An out-of-mould post irradiation thermal treatment on e-beam cured samples provides a higher uniformity in the network although some slight degradation effects. Mode I delamination fracture toughness and Interlaminar Shear Strength (ISS) were also investigated by means of Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and Short Beam Shear tests, respectively. Results from this mechanical characterisation allowed to correlate fracture toughness of the bulk matrix resin, cross-linking density and fibre/matrix interaction to the delamination fracture behaviour of the fibre reinforced material. It has been widely recognised that high energy radiation can be effectively applied to the cure of epoxy resins in applications as composite matrices or structural adhesives with improvements in product quality and/or reduction in production costs. In the presence of suitable initiators, polymerisation of epoxies occurs via cationic mechanism, thus restricting the choice of the resin system components to species which do not contain electron donor groups. The present investigation is aimed to identify suitable co-monomers to be formulated with an epoxy resin, resulting in different cure reaction kinetics and application properties of the cured resin. In particular, four different anhydride types, three dicarboxylic and one tetracarboxylic, have been formulated at the same weight ratio with a diglydilether of bisphenol F and a photo-initiator. Resin samples, irradiated at different integrated doses, have been characterised with solubility tests, dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis and three point flexural tests, showing a response which is strongly affected by the specific chemical structure of the anhydride co-monomer. Post-irradiation thermal treatments carried out on samples irradiated at the lower dose suggest different reaction patterns, with different controlling factors depending on the activation mechanism (temperature or γ-rays). Abstract: Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-grafted-acrylic acid biocompatible nanogels (NGs) were prepared using an exiting industrial-type electron accelerator and setups, starting from semi-dilute aqueous solutions of a commercial PVP and the acrylic acid monomer. As a result, NGs with tunable size and structure can be obtained quantitatively. Sterility was also imparted at the integrated dose absorbed. The chemical structure of the NGs produced was confirmed through Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The molecular and physico-chemical properties of NGs, such as the hydrodynamic dimensions and surface charge densities, for various polymer and monomer concentrations in the irradiated solutions, are discussed here. Abstract: PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission under the chosen irradiation conditions. While the obtainment of uniform PANI particle size distribution was preliminarily ascertained with laser light scattering and TEM microscopy, the typical porous structure of PVA-based freeze dried hydrogels was observed with SEM microscopy for the hydrogel nanocomposites. UV−visible absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the characteristic, pH-dependent and reversible optical absorption properties of PANI are conferred to the otherwise optically transparent PVA hydrogels. Abstract: In this work the influence of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) concentration in water on the organization and dynamics of the corresponding macro-/nanogel networks has been systematically investigated. Irradiation has been performed at the same irradiation dose (within the sterilization dose range) and dose rate. In the selected irradiation conditions, the transition between macroscopic gelation and micro-/nanogels formation is observed just below the critical overlap concentration (∼1wt%), whereas the net prevalence of intra-molecular over inter-molecular crosslinking occurs at a lower polymer concentration (below 0.25wt%). Dynamic–mechanical spectroscopy has been applied as a classical methodology to estimate the network mesh size for macrogels in their swollen state, while 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation spectroscopy has been applied on both the macrogel and nanogel freeze dried residues to withdraw interesting information of the network spatial organization in the passage of scale from macro to nano. Abstract: In this paper two systems, polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene/commercial organo-modified montmorillonite (LDPE/OMMT) nanocomposite, were subjected to e-beam irradiation at different doses and both the molecular modifications and mechanical properties have been investigated through solubility, FT-IR, calorimetric and tensile tests. Moreover, in some of the irradiated systems photo-oxidation aging was performed and its effects were studied. The results show an enhancement with irradiation of the positive effect of the nano-filler loading, related to the increase of the mechanical properties, due to the increase of the nano-filler polymer interaction. Nevertheless calorimetric and FT-IR data indicate that the well known reduction of LDPE/OMMT nanocomposite resistance to photo-oxidation ageing, with respect to LDPE, is amplified by ionizing radiation. Abstract: A model epoxy resin/anhydride system, modified with a polyethersulfone (PES) engineering thermoplastic toughening agent, has been studied under hydrothermal ageing in order to investigate the modification of the thermal, morphological and mechanical behaviour through dynamical mechanical thermal analysis, SEM microscopy and fracture toughness test respectively. Two different concentrations of the toughening agent were used in the blends and two ageing conditions have been considered, consisting of the immersion of the samples in distilled water at constant temperature of 70°C for 1 week and for 1 month. Dynamical mechanical thermal analysis results on hydrothermally aged materials indicated the occurrence of progressive segregation effects with the formation of regions with different cross-linking degrees. Fracture toughness tests showed an increase of the K IC value with the increase of the toughening agent concentration, revealing both a dramatic decrease of the same parameter after 1 week ageing for all the materials and the tendency to reach an almost constant value after 1 month ageing for all the formulations, with a slight increase with respect to 1 week ageing. These results have been interpreted on the basis of the SEM analysis, showing the presence of a well defined micrometric PES particles distribution in the epoxy/anhydride matrix, and discussed in the light of different water absorption mechanisms at short and long ageing times. Abstract: The hydrothermal ageing of epoxy–thermoplastic blends, used as matrices for carbon fibre composites, cured by electron beam, has been studied. Two different thermoplastic percentages have been adopted. A suitable choice of both curing process and formulation parameters allows to carry out irradiation at mild temperature with several advantages, coming from a “non thermal” process, for both the final properties of the materials and the environment. Nevertheless the occurring of vitrification phenomena needs the use of a short thermal treatment after irradiation on the already solid materials, in order to complete the cure reactions. Radiation cured epoxy based matrices have been subjected to a thermal and moisture absorption ageing treatment and its influence on the thermal and mechanical properties has been investigated through dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and fracture toughness tests. The results have been interpreted on the basis of the different curing degree reached by the investigated systems and in the light of their morphological structures. Plasticization, thermal curing and degradation reactions occur in different extent depending on the kind of the material. In particular, for fracture properties, a better resistance to ageing is shown by the system at higher thermoplastic concentration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Gamma radiation curing of an epoxy monomer, in the presence of an iodonium salt, as initiator, is studied. Systems have been polymerized at the same irradiation dose and dose rate and at different processing temperatures. The experimental results show that all the irradiated materials exhibit a latent reactivity, undergoing toward an increase of crosslinking density if they are thermally cured after irradiation. The results indicate that the processing temperature affects both the crosslinking density after irradiation and the sensibility to the post-irradiation thermal treatment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Hydrogel composites containing nanoparticles of the protonated emeraldine form of polyaniline (PANI-PE) have been synthesised by γ-irradiation, using either polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as steric stabilisers. Swelling behaviour of both hydrogels is reported, together with an electrical characterisation of composites, before and after gel network formation, performed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. Abstract: In this work, blends of a difunctional epoxy monomer and a thermoplastic toughening agent are E-beam irradiated at two different dose rates and two different total absorbed doses. The influence of the processing conditions on the thermal properties and on the morphology of the obtained matrices has been investigated. In particular, it is shown how the increase of the dose rate causes an increase of the temperature during irradiation, thus inducing a simultaneous thermal and radiation curing. On the contrary, at low-dose rate the system mainly undergoes to radiation curing, thus making the cured material very sensible to a post-irradiation thermal treatment with a significant improvement of the thermal properties. Abstract: A novel electrically conductive composite material, consisting of polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles dispersed in a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel, was prepared ‘in situ’ by water dispersion polymerisation (DP) of aniline using PVP as steric stabiliser, followed by γ-irradiation induced crosslinking of the PVP component. Conversion yield of aniline into PANI particles was determined via HPLC and gas chromatography, while structural confirmation of the synthesised polymer was sought by FTIR. Morphology and dimensions of PANI particles into the coloured, optically transparent hydrogel was determined by electronic microscopy; moreover, swelling behaviour of composite hydrogels in different buffer solutions was investigated by gravimetric measurements and compared to that of pure PVP hydrogels. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were carried out both on these hydrogels and on the parent aqueous dispersions, at different pH values of the suspending/swelling medium, while conductivity of the composite hydrogels was derived from Impedance Spectroscopy; in both cases results were compared to those relative to hydrogels containing commercial-grade PANI particles.
