- Abstract
The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a rules-based synthesis of the available evidence on levels and trends in health outcomes, a diverse set of risk factors, and health system responses. GBD 2019 covered 204 countries and territories, as well as first administrative level disaggregations for 22 countries, from 1990 to 2019. Because GBD is highly standardised and comprehensive, spanning both fatal and non-fatal outcomes, and uses a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of hierarchical disease and injury causes, the study provides a powerful basis for detailed and broad insights on global health trends and emerging challenges. GBD 2019 incorporates data from 281 586 sources and provides more than 3.5 billion estimates of health outcome and health system measures of interest for global, national, and subnational policy dialogue. All GBD estimates are publicly available and adhere to the Guidelines on Accurate and Transparent Health Estimate Reporting. From this vast amount of information, five key insights that are important for health, social, and economic development strategies have been distilled. - Abstract
Background: Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Method(s): 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression (ST-GPR) was used to generate age-specific fertility rates for 5-year age groups between ages 15 and 49 years. With extensions to age groups 10-14 and 50-54 years, the total fertility rate (TFR) was then aggregated using the estimated age-specific fertility between ages 10 and 54 years. 7417 sources were used for under-5 mortality estimation and 7355 for adult mortality. ST-GPR was used to synthesise data sources after correction for known biases. Adult mortality was measured as the probability of death between ages 15 and 60 years based on vital registration, sample registration, and sibling histories, and was also estimated using ST-GPR. HIV-free life tables were then estimated using estimates of under-5 and adult mortality rates using a relational model life table system created for GBD, which closely tracks observed age-specific mortality rates from complete vital registration when available. Independent estimates of HIV-specific mortality generated by an epidemiological analysis of HIV prevalence surveys and antenatal clinic serosurveillance and other sources were incorporated into the estimates in countries with large epidemics. Our systematic path dependent resistivity study in H – T space shows that paramagnetic (PM)–ferromagnetic (FM) transition in CoS 1.76 Se 0.24 is kinetically arrested. The resistivity at low temperature depends on the path followed in H – T space and the critical field required for PM to FM transition varies non-monotonically with temperature. Measurements under CHUF (cooling and heating in unequal magnetic field) protocol show reentrant transition on warming under higher magnetic field (than that applied during cooling), which indicate that PM state is the non-equilibrium state. Among the growing list of diverse system showing glass like arrested magnetic states, the present system is the first example where, kinetic arrest is observed for a disordered (here PM) to ordered (here FM) magnetic transition. Abstract: The origin of anomalous thermomagnetic irreversibility in rare earth germanide has been addressed. Open hysteresis observed in magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperature is shown to decrease with increasing temperature which correlates with the corresponding isothermal magnetostriction (MS) measurements. These thermomagnetic irreversibilities are interpreted in terms of kinetic arrest of magnetic field induced first order transition. The minor loop study of isothermal MS suggests that open loop in MS and MR is associated with large magnetostriction across metamagnetic transitions. The magnetoresistance associated with the second metamagnetic transition at higher field is reversible where magnetostriction variation with field is negligible. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Tremendous amount of solar energy is hurled into the space by transient sporadic emissions occurring within the Sun. A fraction of this energy is transferred into the Earth''s magnetosphere by the magnetic reconnection process. Interplanetary magnetic field plays a crucial role in the excitation of geomagnetic storms and their subsequent evolution. The present study attempts to determine the influence of post-shock duration of southward B z on the development and intensification of intense () geomagnetic storms. The study presents 18 big storm events that occurred during the solar cycle 23. In all the cases under study, the interplanetary shocks were driven by the interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). The ICME structures may contain southward magnetic fields within the sheath, the magnetic cloud or both in succession, which can lead to the development of intense geomagnetic storms. In addition, dependence of storm strength on the total energy influx into the magnetosphere () and ring current (E RC ) energy is also assessed. Geomagnetic storm characteristics are examined at a low-latitude station, Alibag (geographic lat. , long. ; geomagnetic lat. , long. ), using high resolution digital data. The minimum duration of southward B z for strengthening the storms is . All intense storms are found to have minimum values of southward directed B z to be and interplanetary electric field . BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the inclusion of indicators of iron status and inflammation in surveys assessing iron deficiency and/or anemia. OBJECTIVE: We examined the associations between serum alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein (AGP), serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and urinary hepcidin and their relations with serum ferritin (SF), serum transferrin receptor (sTfR), and hemoglobin. DESIGN: At enrollment, the measurements were made in randomly selected 7-12-y-old anemic children with documented Schistosoma haematobium infection (n = 224 for AGP, CRP, SF, sTfR, and hemoglobin; n = 61 for urinary hepcidin). RESULTS: The correlation between the conventional markers of inflammation, AGP and CRP, was positive (r = 0.40, P < 0.01), and the correlation between the unambiguous markers of iron nutrition, hemoglobin and s-TfR, was negative (r = -0.36, P < 0.01). None of the correlations (r < 0.08) between the above markers was statistically significant. Urinary hepcidin correlated positively with the 2 measured indicators of inflammation (r > or = 0.42, P < 0.01) but not with the 2 indicators of iron nutrition (r < 0.07). SF correlated positively with the 2 measured inflammation markers (r > or = 0.25, P < 0.01) and the 2 iron-nutrition indicators (r > 0.26, P < 0.01). Urinary hepcidin correlated positively with SF (r = 0.39, P < 0.01). Regression analyses suggested that CRP and AGP were significant predictors of SF (P < 0.001); however, CRP (R(2) = 0.38) explained more of SF's variance than did AGP (R(2) = 0.17). CONCLUSIONS: Correlations between AGP, CRP, urinary hepcidin, and SF were statistically significant. CRP values explained SF's variance better than did the other markers of inflammation studied. Abstract: The variations in the horizontal and declination components of the geomagnetic field in response to the interplanetary shocks driven by fast halo coronal mass ejections, fast solar wind streams from the coronal hole regions and the dynamic pressure pulses associated with these events are studied. Close association between the field-aligned current density (j ∥) and the fluctuations in the declination component (ΔD ABG) at Alibag is found for intense storm conditions. Increase in the dawn-dusk interplanetary electric field (E y ) and ΔD ABG are generally in phase. However, when the magnetospheric electric field is directed from dusk to dawn direction, a prominent scatter occurs between the two. It is suggested that low-latitude ground magnetic data may serve as a proxy for the interplanetary conditions in the solar wind. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Zero-field and in-field (at 8T) conductivity vs temperature (σ–T), magneto-resistance (Δρ/ρ), magnetization vs temperature (M–T) and magnetization vs field (M–H) of unannealed Al70Pd20Mn10 and annealed Al70Pd20Mn10, Al70Pd21Mn9 and Al70Pd22Mn8 quasicrystalline alloys have been studied in the temperature range of 1.4–300K. Room temperature resistivity and the low-temperature magneto-resistance show a correlation with the corresponding magnetization. The σ–T for all the studied samples shows a pair of minima and maxima. The σ–T maxima show a correlation with the total magnetization. The analysis shows that σ–T is dominated by weak-localization effects. The minima are arising due to competing inelastic scattering times τi (e–ph scattering in the dirty metallic limit, τi∝T−2) and the Kondo-type spin-flip scattering time τsf whereas the maxima has been attributed to ‘Kondo-maxima’, occurring due to maxima in the spin-flip rate . The magneto-resistance of these samples shows a changeover from negative to positive where the negative component shows a correlation with the magnetization of the sample. The values of parameters derived from refinement give spin-flip scattering fields, which are found to be correlated with the total sample magnetization. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Nanosecond laser pulses were used to synthesize Cu/CuO/Fe 3 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 nanocomposites by ablating Al–Cu–Fe quasicrystal (QC) in two different solvents, namely ethanol and deionized water. The ablation was performed for 15 min with two different laser fluences of 40 J/cm2 and 80 J/cm2 in both the media. The effects of these solvents have been studied to understand the structural and morphological transformations of nanoparticles using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectroscopy studies revealed the formation of Cu/CuO/Fe 3 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 nanocomposites in both the solvents. Furthermore, transmission elctron microscopy/high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) in combination with the energy dispersive X-ray mapping established the formation of NPs with a typical core-void-shell structure evolved in presence of ethanol, showing the crystalline Cu–Fe phase in the core and amorphous Al 2 O 3 phase in the shell. However, in the case of deionized water, the hollow structured NPs were obtained consisting of oxides of Cu, Fe and Al. The mechanisms of the formation of two structures in these two media are controlled by the Kirkendall diffusion process, which appears to be dependent on the physical properties of the solvent i.e., thermal conductivity, viscosity and, polarity. Based on the experimental observation, a possible mechanism for the observed morphology is discussed. This paper reports the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) measurements on Fe 1− x Ni x ( x = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.9) alloys prepared by arc melting method. Valence band spectrum of Fe 0.6 Ni 0.4 alloy exhibits a shift of about 0.15 eV to higher binding energy at 10 K compared to that at 300 K suggesting the precipitation of antiferromagnetic phase below 20 K. Ni L 3 M 45 M 45 Auger spectra exhibit composition induced changes. The Ni L 3 M 45 M 45 Auger spectrum of Fe 0.6 Ni 0.4 alloy exhibits an anomalous increase of intensity in the kinetic energy range from 841 to 845.8 eV at 10 K compared to that of 300 K. Such an increase in intensity of the Auger signal also supports the precipitation of new fcc antiferromagnetic phase below 20 K. Fe L 3 M 45 M 45 Auger overlaps with Ni L 3 M 23 M 23 Auger transition and thus becomes complicated to analyze and obtain temperature or composition induced changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Effect of oxygen off-stoichiometry on the structural and magnetic properties of La0.15Sr0.85MnO3−δ (δ=0.02, 0.14) has been studied employing low-temperature x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, electrical-transport and magnetization. The nearly stoichiometric composition under goes first order phase-transition from cubic to tetragonal P4/mmm at 238K accompanied by magnetic and electrical phase-transitions. On the contrary the off-stoichiometric composition does not show any transition and remains cubic Pm-3m down to 80K. Off-stoichiometry induced oxygen-vacancy seems to suppress the cooperative JT distortion and possibly stabilize a G-type antiferromagnetic phase with localized canted spins. Thus we demonstrate that controlling oxygen stoichiometry is a way of structure/property engineering in electron-doped-like manganites. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A set of sandwich films in the configurations, Fe(200 nm)/Cu(t)/Fe(200 nm); t = 20 nm, 40 nm, 60 nm, 80 nm, 100 nm and 200 nm have been grown using thermal and electron beam gun evaporation techniques at a temperature of 473 K, under high vacuum conditions. The structure and crystallite sizes of the films were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD). The microstructure was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies. Average grain size and surface roughness were determined by atomic force microscope (AFM). The room temperature magnetization as a function of field has been measured using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results revealed the existence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling between Fe layers through an interfacer Cu layer. The strength of AF coupling was observed to be increasing with increasing t and became maximum for t = 60 nm and, decreases for further increase in t. The behavior of coercive field with t indicated softness of the films. The low temperature electrical resistivity in the range from 4.2 K to 300 K has been measured. The residual resistance ratio, RRR and the temperature coefficient, TCR were determined. The power laws for the resistivity variation with temperature have been established. This is for the first time that a set of sandwich films in the present configurations were investigated for structural, magnetic and electrical properties and, the power laws for resistivity variation at low temperature have been established. Abstract: Measurements of the critical current density (J c) by magnetisation and the upper critical field (H c2) by magnetoresistance have been performed for hafnium-doped MgB2. There has been a remarkable enhancement of J c as compared to that by ion irradiation without any appreciable decrease in T c, which is beneficial from the point of view of applications. The irreversibility line extracted from J c shows an upward shift. In addition, there has been an increase in the upper critical field which indicates that Hf partially substitutes for Mg. Hyperfine interaction parameters obtained from time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements revealed the formation of HfB and HfB2 phases along with the substitution of Hf. A possible explanation is given for the role of these species in the enhancement of J c in MgB2 superconductor. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Some new members of a ruthenocuprate(2212) series have been synthesized by Mn substitution for Ru in Gd1.4Ce0.6Sr2RuCu2O10. Characterization by x-ray diffraction (XRD) phase analysis has been carried out. Changes in structural features on substitution, including a significant change in lattice parameter for a very low substitution level, have been observed. Four-probe resistivity studies indicate the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism for the pristine compound and a semiconductor-like upturn in resistivity and the absence of superconductivity even for very low levels of Mn substitution. AC susceptibility measurements show a progressive suppression of the magnetic transition temperature as well as a smearing of the magnetic transition as a function of Mn substitution. Possible reasons for the absence of superconductivity have been discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Devices other than the accelerators are desired to be investigated for generating high energy particles to induce nuclear reaction and positron emission tomography (PET) producing radioisotopes. The experimental data of plasma focus devices (PF) are studied and the activity scaling law for External Solid Target (EST) activation is established.
