Martinez-Tarazona (b) Keywords: Coal fly ash; Separation; Characterization Abstract: Carbon-enriched fractions have been obtained from two coal fly ash (FA) samples. The FA came from two pulverized-coal fired power stations (Lada and Escucha, Spain) and were collected from baghouse filters. Sieving was used to obtain carbon-enriched fractions, which were further subjected to two beneficiation processes: acid demineralization using HCl and HF, and oil agglomeration using soya oil-water. Yield in weight after sieving, unburned carbon content, and several physicochemical characteristics of the obtained fractions were used to compare the performance of the beneficiation methods. Low carbon concentration was obtained by sieving, particularly in the case of Escucha FA. However, after acid demineralization or oil agglomeration, fractions containing unburned carbon in a range of 63% to 68% were obtained. These fractions showed differences in mineral phase composition and distribution depending on the FA and on the beneficiation method used. The textural properties of the obtained fractions varied as a function of their carbon content and the beneficiation method used. However, no significant differences in morphology of the carbonaceous particles were found. Abstract

A study was conducted on a new distributed real-time logic language for loosely coupled systems. A new concurrent logic language execution model was proposed for real-time control and efficient distributed execution. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the execution model of the language for distributed real-time systems. The language is being employed as a kernel language for communication protocol validation and distributed simulation solution.

Les enfants en surpoids sont réputés être difficiles dans leurs choix alimentaires en raison d'une néophobie ou sélectivité élevée, et présenter une alimentation peu variée constituée en grande partie d'aliments denses sur le plan énergétique, ainsi qu'un fort attrait pour la nourriture. L'objectif de notre article est de vérifier ces présupposés au moyen d'une analyse narrative de la littérature. Dans l'état actuel des connaissances, il semble que les enfants en surpoids ou obèses ne témoignent pas d'une néophobie ou sélectivité accentuée, ni de préférences particulières envers les aliments denses en comparaison de leurs pairs normo-pondérés. En revanche, ils tendent à présenter un tempérament alimentaire spécifique constitué d'une forte excitabilité de l'appétit associée à une fragilité de la régulation des prises alimentaires. Il semble ainsi que la notion de tempérament alimentaire devrait être introduite au sein des consultations d'enfants en surpoids. Overweight children are known to be difficult in their food choices due to high neophobia or selectivity, have a diet with little variety, consisting largely of energy-dense foods, and a high attraction to food. The objective of our article is to investigate these presuppositions by means of a narrative analysis of the literature. In the current state of knowledge, it appears that overweight children do not exhibit accentuated neophobia or selectivity, nor do they exhibit particular dense food preferences compared to their normo-weighted peers. They tend to have a specific food temperament consisting of a strong excitability of poorly regulated appetite. These results may have implications for consultations of overweight children and suggest that the notion of food temperament must be taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract To avoid dental implant-related infections and to promote the osseointegration of titanium implants, the application of silicon and chitosan containing coatings is proposed. Silicon is a well-known osteogenic element and chitosan was selected to confer the antibacterial properties. The synthesis of hybrid silica-chitosan coatings using the sol-gel process is presented and the characterization using 29Si-NMR to verify the correct formation of the network is discussed. The 13C NMR spectroscopy was used to confirm the covalent union between chitosan and the silicon network. Hydrolytic degradation and silicon release studies showed the effective silicon release from the hybrids and, hence, the possibility to promote bone formation. The introduction of different amounts of chitosan and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) modulated the Si release. The analysis of cell cultures in vitro demonstrated that the hybrid coatings were not cytotoxic and promoted cell proliferation on their surfaces. Five frankfurter types were considered: control, smoked, flavouring + smoked, spicy and spicy + smoked. A trained panel in androstenone perception carried out a sensory profile on the different sausages. The highest scores for androstenone perception (odour, flavour and aftertaste) were found in frankfurters that included no masking strategy which indicated the effectiveness of the evaluated strategies. Regarding masking strategies, the contribution of spices and smoking to sensory perception of frankfurters was detected by the panellists. Smoking was the best strategy to mask androstenone odour, while the use of spices masked androstenone odour to a greater extent than androstenone flavour. Only the combined use of spices and smoking was able to eliminate the perception of androstenone. X-ray fluorescence scanners, such as the Itrax™ Core Scanner (Itrax) (Cox Analytical Systems, Mölndal, Sweden), provide high-resolution geochemical data within several hours. However, the semi-quantitative nature of these analysers has hampered their use to study pollution. This study explores Itrax’s capabilities to detect trace metals, such as Hg and Cd, in the Ría de Pontevedra harbour (NW Spain). A set of Itrax detection levels were proposed for each metal after comparison with quantitative measurements obtained from Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS) analyses. These quantitative data obtained after a sequential extraction were used to evaluate pollutant bioavailability and to determine metal pollution levels exhibiting Hg pollution. The reliability of inc/coh and Br/Cl ratios to assess the total organic matter variability was also evaluated. The results indicated that the Itrax is an efficient and fast option to monitor contamination, thereby avoiding laborious discrete analyses and reducing analytical cost and time. Abstract: Two different coal fly ashes coming from the burning of two coals of different rank have been used as a precursor for the preparation of steam activated carbons. The performance of these activated carbons in the SO2 removal was evaluated at flue gas conditions (100°C, 1000ppmv SO2, 5% O2, 6% H2O). Different techniques were used to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the samples in order to explain the differences found in their behaviour. A superior SO2 removal capacity was shown by the activated carbon obtained using the fly ash coming from a subbituminous–lignite blend. Experimental results indicated that the presence of higher amount of certain metallic oxides (Ca, Fe) in the carbon-rich fraction of this fly ash probably has promoted a deeper gasification in the activation with steam. A more suitable surface chemistry and textural properties have been obtained in this case which explains the higher efficiency shown by this sample in the SO2 removal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The results suggest that early diagenesis had been influenced by both hydrodynamic conditions and organic matter input (the latter especially in areas devoted to mariculture), and that anthropogenic inputs had also affected the concentrations and between-fraction distribution of Cu, Pb, Zn and other metals in surficial sediments. Abstract

Mariculture is an important economic activity in shallow marine areas of the Rías Baixas (Galicia, NW Spain). The maintenance of high product quality requires surveillance of environmental quality, including the risk of metal toxicity. In this study the redox status of intertidal sediments in the Bay of San Simón, and the risk of toxicity posed by their As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn contents, were evaluated by determination of operationally defined reactive, silicate-bound, organic and pyrite-related fractions of these elements and of Fe. The large silicate-bound fractions of most of these metals indicate their lithogenic origin; the main exception is Pb, which in all respects exhibits singular behaviour associated with its predominantly anthropogenic origin in a ceramics factory. In sediments with larger fine-grained particle contents, which are oxic only in the top few centimetres, greater proportions of the trace elements are present as sulphides or associated with sulphide minerals: the degree of pyritization of Fe (DOP) is 46% overall, and the pyrite fraction of some elements doubtless increases at the expense of the reactive fraction, most overall degrees of trace metal pyritization (DTMPs) lying in the range 10–50%. A decline in pyrite genesis at depths below about 18cm in these sediments is attributed to the exhaustion of organic matter susceptible to metabolization by sulphide-generating bacteria. In coarse-grained, oxic sediments the oxidation of sulphides makes pyrite-related fractions very small, and reactive and silicate-bound fractions are negatively correlated; reactive fractions associated with Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides are large, and DOP and DTMPs are low (generally much lower than in mud-rich sediments), except for Pb. Most of the elements studied are mainly present in forms that are neither bioavailable nor potentially bioavailable, and so do not constitute a significant environmental threat. However, the high DTMPs of Cu and Pb indicate significant potential bioavailability, which should be taken into account in evaluations of environmental quality and the risk to bivalve cultures. Four 2–3m sediment cores were taken at the sites on the periphery of mussel raft concentrations in the subtidal zone of the inner Ría de Vigo (Galicia, NW Spain) with a view to evaluate the potential risk to mariculture from sediment-borne trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). The distribution of each of these elements in reactive, organic, pyrite and silicate-bound fractions was determined at 64 samples, and these data were used to calculate the degree of trace metal pyritization (DTMP) of each metal/metalloid. In the top 10–20cm, relatively oxic conditions led to As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn having large reactive fractions due to their association with Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides. At lower levels, anoxic conditions favoured by intense diagenesis led to the precipitation of trace metals and metalloids as sulphides, with or without association with pyrite. Particularly large pyrite fractions in the 20–100cm layer are attributed to the organic matter of this layer being more marine in origin than that of deeper sediments. DTMP was greatest for Cu and As, and least for Pb, Zn and Cr. The risk of trace element toxicity in the event of disturbances instituting oxic conditions in these sediments is discussed. Abstract: In November 2002, the sinking of the Prestige oil tanker off the Galician coast (N.W. Spain) caused the largest ecological catastrophe in the history of Spain, affecting the coast called the ‘Costa da Morte’ (Galicia, N.W. Spain). This work is focused on the study of the oil contamination of the intertidal area of two beaches located on this stretch of coast. The study of twenty cores extracted from both beaches has identified fuel embedded in the sedimentary column up to a depth of 2.38m (this being the maximum depth of extraction). This, along with the presence of oil below the groundwater indicates the existence of a new factor which determines the burial of oil: the morphodynamic behaviour of the beach. Furthermore, this morphodynamic variation conditions the physical appearance of the buried oil. Four different types have been identified: tar-balls (cm), particles (mm), oil coatings on sediment grains and on emulsion, with distribution patterns conditioned by the degree of wave exposure. The analysis of the information obtained have permitted the development of a conceptual model of the burial and oil evolution in the sedimentary column in relation to wave exposure, and thus to the morphodynamic variability of the beach.
