Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a precision particle physics detector on the International Space Station (ISS) conducting a unique, long-duration mission of fundamental physics research in space. The physics objectives include the precise studies of the origin of dark matter, antimatter, and cosmic rays as well as the exploration of new phenomena. Following a 16-year period of construction and testing, and a precursor flight on the Space Shuttle, AMS was installed on the ISS on May 19, 2011. In this report we present results based on 120 billion charged cosmic ray events up to multi-TeV energies. This includes the fluxes of positrons, electrons, antiprotons, protons, and nuclei. These results provide unexpected information, which cannot be explained by the current theoretical models. The accuracy and characteristics of the data, simultaneously from many different types of cosmic rays, provide unique input to the understanding of origins, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays.

Abstract

This paper presents a new characterization of subjective possibility theory. Anscombe and Aumann [1] pioneered a multiple-variable approach to characterize the subjective probability on the basis of its relationship with objective probability. We generalize the Anscombe-Aumann approach to define subjective possibility theory. To characterize the uncertainty of the variable of interest ( H ) we consider its relationship with a variable of probability and a variable of ignorance. Our axiomatization assumes that the preference over the acts contingent on the outcomes of the variables is a weak order and satisfies a monotonicity property; the preference over probabilistic lotteries is represented by linear utility; and the preference over acts under ignorance by a recently developed τ -anchor utility theory. We show that if H and the variable of ignorance are completely reversible in Anscombe-Aumann’s sense and H and the variable of probability are partially reversible then the uncertainty of H must obey the laws of possibility theory. We outline a framework to manage heterogeneous uncertainty that includes probability, possibility and ignorance in decision making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper investigates a model of decision making under uncertainty comprising opposite epistemic states of complete ignorance and probability. In the first part, a new utility theory under complete ignorance is developed that combines Hurwicz–Arrow's theory of decision under ignorance with Anscombe–Aumann's idea of reversibility and monotonicity used to characterize subjective probability. The main result is a representation theorem for preference under ignorance by a particular one-parameter function – the τ -anchor utility function. In the second part, we study decision making under uncertainty comprising an ignorant variable and a probabilistic variable. We show that even if the variables are independent, they are not reversible in Anscombe–Aumann's sense. This insight leads to the development of a new proposal for decision under uncertainty represented by a preference relation that satisfies the weak order and monotonicity assumptions but rejects the reversibility assumption. A distinctive feature of the new proposal is that the certainty equivalent of a mapping from the state space of uncertain variables to the prize space depends on the order in which the variables are revealed. Explicit modeling of the order of variables explains some of the puzzles in multiple-prior model and the models for decision making with Dempster–Shafer belief function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: This paper examines proposals for decision making with Dempster–Shafer belief functions from the perspectives of requirements for rational decision under ignorance and sequential consistency. The focus is on the proposals by Jaffray & Wakker and Giang & Shenoy applied for partially consonant belief functions. We formalize the concept of sequential consistency of an evaluation model and prove results about sequential consistency of Jaffray–Wakker’s model and Giang–Shenoy’s model under various conditions. We demonstrate that the often neglected assumption about two-stage resolution of uncertainty used in Jaffray–Wakker’s model actually disambiguates the foci of a belief function, and therefore, makes it a partially consonant on the extended state space. Abstract

Abstract: Partially consonant belief functions (pcb), studied by Walley, are the only class of Dempster–Shafer belief functions that are consistent with the likelihood principle of statistics. Structurally, the set of foci of a pcb is partitioned into non-overlapping groups and within each group, foci are nested. The pcb class includes both probability function and Zadeh’s possibility function as special cases. This paper studies decision making under uncertainty described by pcb. We prove a representation theorem for preference relation over pcb lotteries to satisfy an axiomatic system that is similar in spirit to von Neumann and Morgenstern’s axioms of the linear utility theory. The closed-form expression of utility of a pcb lottery is a combination of linear utility for probabilistic lottery and two-component (binary) utility for possibilistic lottery. In our model, the uncertainty information, risk attitude and ambiguity attitude are separately represented. A tractable technique to extract ambiguity attitude from a decision maker behavior is also discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

This paper presents a new axiomatic decision theory for choice under uncertainty. Unlike Bayesian decision theory where uncertainty is represented by a probability function, in our theory, uncertainty is given in the form of a likelihood function extracted from statistical evidence. The likelihood principle in statistics stipulates that likelihood functions encode all relevant information obtainable from experimental data. In particular, we do not assume any knowledge of prior probabilities. Consequently, a Bayesian conversion of likelihoods to posterior probabilities is not possible in our setting. We make an assumption that defines the likelihood of a set of hypotheses as the maximum likelihood over the elements of the set. We justify an axiomatic system similar to that used by von Neumann and Morgenstern for choice under risk. Our main result is a representation theorem using the new concept of binary utility. We also discuss how ambiguity attitudes are handled. Applied to the statistical inference problem, our theory suggests a novel solution. The results in this paper could be useful for probabilistic model selection.

Abstract

We present a numerical study of the thermal migration of a compound droplet attached to a horizontal substrate. The different constant temperatures are applied to the left and right boundaries of the computational domain. The compound droplet contains one inner core. The problem is solved by using a front-tracking technique associated with the finite difference method. The investigated parameters include the radius ratio (R i o) of the inner droplet and the equivalent radius of the outer droplet (R i o varied in the range of 0.2 to 0.7), the viscosity ratio (μ o m) of the outer to middle fluids (μ o m varied in the range of 0.1 to 2.4), and the static contact angle θ e (θ e varied in the range of 60° to 120°). The results reveal that the inner droplet drives the compound droplet towards the hot region as its radius is sufficiently large (R i o ≥ 0.6). The compound droplet moves towards the cold region as the value of R i o is less than 0.6. Increasing the viscosity of the outer fluid (by increasing μ o m) or θ e causes the compound droplet to move towards the hot region. Abstract

This paper focuses on reporting systematic studies on the effect of the precursor gas chemistry ratio between hydrogen/methane (H 2 /CH 4 ) and argon (Ar) to tailor control of the grain size, morphology and roughness of large area diamond films. Films ranging from a microcrystalline diamond structure (MCD 1–3 μm grain size) all the way to an ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD 3–7 nm grain size) structure were grown over 100 mm diameter areas, as a pathway for scaling diamond film growth processes by Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) to large areas (≥ 150 mm in diameter). H 2 -rich/CH 4 chemistry was used to synthesize the MCD films, while Ar-rich/CH 4 /H 2 chemistry was used to grow the UNCD films. The synthesis of the diamond films using the HFCVD process indicates that the Ar content is critical to achieve the characteristic UNCD film structure with roughness, chemical bonding and thickness uniformity in the range of 5% across large areas. The ratio of Ar/H 2 in the range 70/30 sccm to 90/10 sccm, all with 2 sccm of CH 4 gas, yields films with grain size from 10–50 nm for nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films to 3–7 nm for the UNCD films, respectively. Abstract

Paired strontium-to-calcium (Sr/Ca) and d18O measurements for two Porites lutea corals recovered from Hon Tre Island, Vietnam, are strongly correlated to sea surface temperature (SST) and precipitation at monthly to interannual time-scales. Least squares linear regression of monthly Sr/Ca to SST shows a strong, significant correlation (r²=0.77, p<.0001), with root mean square residuals of 0.9°C. 3-year averaged (binned) Sr/Ca for wet (Sep-Nov) and dry (Jan-Mar) seasons separately captures SST variability at interannual time scales (Sr/Ca RMSR=0.42°C and 0.70°C for wet and dry seasons, respectively). Coral d18O correlates weakly to SST at seasonal and interannual time scales for wet and dry seasons, with significant anomalies (d18O RMSR=2.4°C and 1.65°C, respectively). Correcting the SST influence on coral d18O using paired Sr/Ca values provides estimates of d18O of seawater (d18Osw). 3-year averaged d18Osw during the wet season shows a significant correlation to local precipitation (r²=0.54, p=0.01). These results show that coral Sr/Ca in this location accurately reflects SST at a number of timescales, and that seawater d18O composition in the wet season is controlled by local precipitation, largely unmodified by ocean circulation during the winter monsoon. This study highlights the sensitivity and utility of coral geochemistry in this region for reliably reconstructing SST and monsoonal precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper concerns developing a numerical method of the Newton type to solve systems of nonlinear equations described by nonsmooth continuous functions. We propose and justify a new generalized Newton algorithm based on graphical derivatives, which have never been used to derive a Newton-type method for solving nonsmooth equations. Based on advanced techniques of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the well-posedness of the algorithm, its local superlinear convergence, and its global convergence of the Kantorovich type. Our convergence results hold with no semismoothness and Lipschitzian assumptions, which is illustrated by examples. The algorithm and main results obtained in the paper are compared with well-recognized semismooth and -differentiable versions of Newton’s method for nonsmooth Lipschitzian equations.
