Abstract

Blood flow inside the umbilical cord can decrease if the cord becomes curled. This was demonstrated by researchers who wrapped umbilical cords around a cylinder and measured the flow of a liquid solution through the cord.

Abstract

Fluid mechanics appear to play a significant role in how blood flow branches from the umbilical cord into the liver and onto the heart through the ductus venosus in sheep. Blood flow was evaluated at varying pressures and consistencies in six fetal liver samples with either the ductus venosus open or closed. Flow was more rapid at lower pressures with the ductus venosus open. Flow was slower with thicker or more viscous blood. At low pressures and high viscosity more blood flowed through the ductus venosus than into the liver.
