Abstract

Abstract: Fingerprint matching has emerged as an effective tool for human recognition due to the uniqueness, universality and invariability of fingerprints. Many different approaches have been proposed in the literature to determine faithfully if two fingerprint images belong to the same person. Among them, minutiae-based matchers highlight as the most relevant techniques because of their discriminative capabilities, providing precise results. However, performing a fingerprint identification over a large database can be an inefficient task due to the lack of scalability and high computing times of fingerprint matching algorithms. In this paper, we propose a distributed framework for fingerprint matching to tackle large databases in a reasonable time. It provides a general scheme for any kind of matcher, so that its precision is preserved and its time of response can be reduced. To test the proposed system, we conduct an extensive study that involves both synthetic and captured fingerprint databases, which have different characteristics, analyzing the performance of three well-known minutiae-based matchers within the designed framework. With the available hardware resources, our distributed model is able to address up to 400000 fingerprints in approximately half a second. Abstract

We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay D0→μ+μ− using 50×106 events recorded with a dimuon trigger in interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction B(D0→μ+μ−)

Abstract

• Adsorption capacity of HKUST-1 framework at very low concentrations for toluene, acetone, o-xylene, ethanol & acetaldehyde (respectively 23.8, 5.0, 14.7, 16.5 and 1.4%wt). • VOCs are adsorbed in the order of: o-Xylene > Acetone > Toluene. • Adsorption capacities are reduced notably, up to 97% loss with humidity increase. • Cold desorption tests show a 50% decrease of the adsorption capacity after three cycles. In this study, HKUST-1 framework utilization as an adsorbent was characterized in realistic indoor air conditions. Adsorption capacities and breakthrough behaviors of this material were studied for low concentration gas mixtures with controlled relative humidity. Results demonstrate high adsorption capacities (23.8, 14.7, 16.5, 5.0, and 1.4%wt for the respective mono-pollutant gases: toluene, o-xylene, ethanol, acetone and acetaldehyde). The adsorption capacities and breakthrough curves of binary and five gases mixtures give information about the competitions between pollutants and show that the studied volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are adsorbed in the order of: o-Xylene > Acetone > Toluene. Abstract

Renal transplantation is the optimal renal replacement therapy. In Mexico, most of the kidney transplants are from living donors. It is essential to identify conditions that increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) in donors, such as metabolic syndrome (MS). In retrospect from January 2008 to December 2018, the donation protocols for renal transplantation of the Hospital Central Sur Alta Especialidad "Picacho" were reviewed, classifying all the cases of donors by nephrectomy or no nephrectomy and describing the demographic characteristics, prevalence of metabolic diseases, and cause of rejection of the protocol. A total of 178 donors were studied: 82 women (46%), 96 men (54%), mean age of 42 years, average body mass index (BMI) 27.9 kg/m2, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration 99 mL/min, 59 patients with grade I and II obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), and 1 patient with morbid obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2). A total of 39 patients (22%) underwent nephrectomy and 139 (78%) did not. The following characteristics and alterations were found: Of the 139 patients who did not undergo nephrectomy, 91 had metabolic disorders, 20 had low GFR, 21 had albuminuria, and 4 recipients received cadaveric transplants, 3 due to critical conditions of the recipient. The metabolic alterations in the rejected donors were as follows: MS 54 (59%), prediabetes 55 (39%), newly diagnosed hypertension 70 (76%), diabetes mellitus 20 (14%), obesity 47 (51.6%), dyslipidemia 76 (83%), hyperuricemia 17 (12%). The prevalence of MS in apparently healthy donors is similar to that of other studies in Mexico. Both MS and its components are independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and CKD. It has been shown that these donors have a greater degree of glomerular and interstitial fibrosis; therefore, diagnosis, prevention, and timely treatment in this group are important. • Today, living kidney donors have more metabolic risk factors. • The metabolic syndrome is not an absolute contraindication for kidney donation. • We must know the outcomes and possible effects on renal function in long-term kidney donors. Abstract

• Most of the dimensions of poor outcome were associated with poorer cognition at the long-term follow-up of FEP. • A final diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder showed the strongest association with cognitive impairment. • Impairments in processing speed, verbal and visual memory are associated with poor outcome at the long-term follow-up in FEP. • A multi-domain outcome (MDO) approach may allow personalizing the individual long-term outcome in FEP. • Caution is needed in generalizing our results from FEP patients admitted more than 20 years ago to current outcomes of FEP. Little is known about long-term outcomes of the first episode of psychosis (FEP) other than in the symptomatic domain. We hypothesised that cognitive impairment is associated with poorer multi-domain outcomes at a long-term follow-up of FEP patients. We followed-up 172 FEP patients for a mean of 20.3 years. Ten outcome dimensions were assessed (symptomatic, functional and personal recovery, social disadvantage, physical health, suicide attempts, number of episodes, current drug use, chlorpromazine equivalent doses (CPZ), and schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder final diagnosis). Cognition was assessed at follow-up. Processing speed and verbal memory deficits showed significant associations with poor outcomes on symptomatic, social functioning, social disadvantage, higher number of episodes, and higher CPZ. Significant associations were found between visual memory impairments were significantly associated with low symptomatic and functional recovery, between attentional deficits and a final diagnosis of schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, and between social cognition deficits and poor personal recovery.Lower cognitive global scores were significantly associated with all outcome dimensions except for drug abuse and physical status. Using multiple outcome dimensions allowed for the inclusion of the patients' perspective and other commonly neglected outcome measures. Taken together, cognitive impairment in FEP patients is strongly related to poor performance on several outcome dimensions beyond symptomatic remission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tests have been done using laboratory scale reactors to explore the performance of a sub-bituminous coal and an oil shale from Mongolia, under conditions simulating gasification, pyrolysis and combustion processes. The results show that the coal is reactive, with a high fuel conversion under gasification conditions and the production of a reasonable quality fuel gas. The combustion performance was similar to that of other coals of a similar C content that have been shown to perform acceptably at the commercial scale. The main drawback with the coal is the high as mined moisture content. This would impose a thermal penalty on a commercial process. The oil shale did not produce such a good gas, but at the temperature used (800 °C), the production of tar was significant. This suggests that the shale may have potential as a source of liquid fuels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
