Abstract

Considering the scarce number of studies investigating the oxidative potential of PM 2.5 in Italy, a measurement campaign was conducted from February 2020 to October 2020 in a coastal semi-rural site of Basilicata (Southern Italy) with the goal to characterize the fine fraction of ambient particulate matter (PM) and investigate its chemical and toxicological properties, by means of oxidative potential. Different instruments such as an automatic low-volume sampler, an aethalometer and an optical particle counter, were employed for the measurement of PM 2.5 mass concentration, equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentration and absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), and particle number size distribution in 0.25–31 μm size range, respectively. 108 daily PM samples, collected on quartz fibre filters, were chemically analysed. Organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon content was estimated by thermo-optical transmittance technique (TOT), the concentrations of the main water-soluble ions and total elements were determined by ion chromatography and ED-XRF technique, while the oxidative potential of the water-soluble fraction was estimated through the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. The mean value of PM 2.5 mass concentration was 9.2 ± 2.5 μg/m3 and the average contribution of measured species on PM 2.5 mass was 3.3% EC; 19.3% OC; 27.0% secondary inorganic aerosol (sum of SO 4 2−, NH 4 + and NO 3 −), and 10.2% of the other ions and elements. The OC and EC contributions to PM 2.5 mass and their mean ratio (OC / EC = 6.6 ± 3.1) suggest that the site is affected by the combined contribution of traffic emissions and biomass combustion (domestic heating and agricultural activities), with the latter prevailing over the traffic, as supported by the mean AAE value of 1.3. The mean OP normalized by sampled volume, OP DTTV , was as high as 0.34 ± 0.22 nmol/min·m3, a value comparable to those recorded for PM 2.5 in suburban areas of Italy. The correlation between OP DTTV and the chemical species observed in the PM 2.5 samples showed a good agreement with the carbonaceous component OC (r = 0.62) and with some ions, K+ and SO 4 2− (r = 0.60). These results identify combustion sources as the most responsible for the relatively high OP DTTV activity of PM 2.5 recorded in this area. • A campaign was conducted in a rural site of the Mediterranean area, affected by traffic emissions and biomass combustion. • Mean OP DTTv values were as high as those observed in suburban areas. • Combustion sources were the major contributors to OP activity of PM 2.5. Abstract

A method has been developed, herein presented, to model binary solid solutions' volume, enthalpy and Gibbs energy using the energy state functions, E ( V , S ) , of the end-members only. The E ( V , S ) s are expanded around an unknown mixing volume, V Mix , and the fundamental equilibrium equation − ( ∂ E / ∂ V ) S = P is used to determine V Mix . V Mix allows us to model enthalpy, straightforwardly. The same argument holds using Helmholtz energy, F ( V , T ) , in place of E ( V , S ) , and the equilibrium equation becomes − ( ∂ F / ∂ V ) T = P . One can readily determine the Gibbs free energy, too. The method presented remarkably simplifies computing of solid mixings' thermodynamic properties and makes it possible to preserve crystal structure symmetry that would undergo reduction because of the introduction of disordered super-cells.

Abstract

The functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a very important step in many applications but it is still a very complex and variable task. This work shows an efficient, easily reproducible and optimal method to introduce oxygenated functional groups to CNTs by treating them for 60′ at 350 °C with a mixture of 2% oxygen in argon. The oxidized nanotubes were characterized through FT-IR, Raman and TGA to verify the quality of the oxidation and the lattice integrity of the treated CNTs. The results demonstrate that the treated nanotubes are not damaged even after introducing a significant number of new groups. This methodology could be easily tuned to functionalize other types of graphitic materials.

49. Facial Disability Index in Adults With Peripheral Facial Palsy: Rasch Analysis and Suggestions for Refinement.

Abstract

To investigate the psychometric properties of the validated Italian version of the Facial Disability Index (FDI), a patient-reported outcome measure widely used to assess individuals with peripheral facial palsy. Methodological research on cross-sectional data from a convenience sample. Outpatient university rehabilitation clinic. A total of 168 (N=168) outpatients (66% female; mean age, 44±15 years) with peripheral facial palsy of diverse etiology (48% postsurgical, 31% Bell palsy, 8% posttraumatic, 3% congenital, 11% other medical conditions) and severity at the first visit. Not applicable. The 2 FDI subscales, physical function (FDI-PHY) and social/well-being function (FDI-SWB), were separately analyzed using classical test theory methods and Rasch analysis. Cronbach α was 0.79 in FDI-PHY and 0.74 in FDI-SWB, while item-rest correlation ranged from 0.36-0.67 in FDI-PHY and from 0.43-0.68 in FDI-SWB. In the FDI-PHY, we deleted 2 underused response categories, rescoring the remaining ones. In the FDI-SWB, some response categories did not function as expected by the Rasch model: their collapse into a 4-level format solved this problem. In each subscale, all items fitted the Rasch model except item 4 (eye tearing/becoming dry) in FDI-PHY that showed an unexpectedly high response variability. The person separation reliability of both subscales indicated that they are useful only for group-level judgments. In both subscales, principal component analysis of the residuals showed unidimensionality and absence of locally dependent items. No significant differential item functioning concerning sex, age, or time from paralysis emerged. Our study demonstrated overall positive psychometric characteristics of FDI except for the functioning of the response categories. We propose a refined version with 4 response categories only and related conversion graphs that may improve the interpretability, feasibility, and metric performance of this tool.
