It proposes a technology-driven roadmapping processes that starts from capability analysis for technology planning and ends with business opportunity analysis for market planning. We suggest the use of patent data as a proxy measure of technological capability for this purpose and develop four analysis modules -- Monitoring, Collaboration, Diversification, and Benchmarking -- to support decision-making during the process. Various analysis techniques such as text-mining, network analysis, citation analysis and index analysis are applied to discover meaningful implications from the patent data, which are summarized in four maps -- Actor-similarity map, Actor-relations map, Technology-industry map, and Technology-affinity map. For the purpose of illustration, RFID-related patents are collected and the 18 firms with the most patents used, focusing especially on the third biggest. We believe using roadmapping and patent analysis together can play complementary roles for each other. Putting roadmapping techniques together with patent analysis can increase the objectivity and reliability of technology roadmap, while using patent analysis restricted to technological information together with roadmapping techniques can ensure that a more valuable breadth of strategic information is extracted from patents. Whereas little attention has been paid to the architectural aspects of MRP process in academic studies, in practice, reports are often made of its time consuming characteristics due to intensive interactions with databases and difficulty in real time processing. This paper proposes a grid enabled MRP process in a distributed database environment and demonstrates the performance improvement of the proposed process by a simulation study. Hydrogen liquefaction process (HLP) is a principal technology to overcome energy storage and transportation problems and to meet the demand for an eco-friendly energy source. This study proposes three conceptual designs of HLPs with various refrigerant cycles. The specific energy consumption (SEC) of HLP could be reduced by various refrigerants. Three different refrigerants (liquid air (LA)), liquified natural gas (LNG), and mixed refrigerants (MR)) were compared to the conventional LN 2 -based HLP to verify 4E (efficiency, exergy, economics, and environmental) of each process based on their thermodynamic properties. From the results, we found that the process performance, economics, and environmental effects of the LNG-based hydrogen liquefaction process (LNG-HLP) were the best. In particular, the LNG-HLP, which uses the cold energy of LNG, required less refrigerant than LN 2 , thereby reducing the energy consumed by major compressors. It had an SEC of 11.04 KWh/kg-LH 2 and capital, operating cost, and CO 2 emissions of the LNG-HLP process were considerably lower by 5.5 %, 6.2 %, and 12.2 % (unit kg CO 2eq /kg LH 2), respectively, compared to the conventional process. To propose better economic or environmental scenarios to stakeholders and governments, in this study, the HLP and hydrogen production processes were expanded to include CO 2 emission calculation and carried out analysis for levelized cost of hydrogen contribution rate to electricity production types by country. • Proposed a novel conceptual design for hydrogen liquefaction processes. • Analyzed 4E from a comprehensive perspective. • Utilized various refrigerants to improve process efficiency. • LNG-HLP was reduced by 3.7% of LCOH compared to the base process. • LNG-HLP was reduced by 12.2% of CO 2 emissions compared to the base process. The seawater desalination is considered an energy and cost-intensive procedure and thus, the novel hybrid desalination process, which combines forward osmosis (FO), crystallization, and reverse osmosis (RO), is a promising alternative that can reduce the cost and energy consumption. However, this process still has a drawback in that a significant amount of heat energy is still required to raise the temperature of the draw solution and feed water, and a large amount of cooling energy is required for crystallization. This work designed a novel hybrid desalination process using waste heat and cold energy emitted from liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants for energy efficient desalination, in a bid to increase economic feasibility. To design the suggested system, a process and mathematical model were developed using the experimental results. The process model recovers waste heat emitted from the natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) and waste cold energy emitted from the LNG regasification process. The economic and energy feasibility of the proposed process and its potential for CO 2 capture and utilization were analyzed. The total annualized cost (TAC) of the proposed process could be reduced by 34% compared with the conventional SWRO by efficiently recovering the waste heat and cold energy. In addition, the proposed process could decrease the specific energy consumption (SEC) by 50% compared with conventional SWRO. Furthermore, if the proposed process is applied to CO 2 capture and utilization, approximately 2,733,602 tons/y of CO 2 can be captured, and the incurred total capital investment (TCI) for the installation of additional processes can be recovered in 2.09 years. Abstract Recovering the remaining cold energy from the regasification process is one of the key challenges of the overall LNG value chain. This paper aims to develop a cryogenic energy storage system (CES) integrated with LNG direct expansion regasification (LNG–CES) that can recover cold energy and store it as cryogenic energy using air as the working fluid. Cold energy of LNG is available in two forms: thermal energy by heat exchange and shaft work by expansion, while the cryogenic storage process requires compression and cooling. The supply and demand of LNG direct expansion and cryogenic energy storage processes are well balanced. Therefore, a combined LNG–CES process to store energy will prove efficient. This study proposes an industrial-feasible design for the LNG–CES process and energy optimization to maximize net power output from the process. Moreover, a novel process design is proposed to recover cold energy lost during LNG regasification more efficiently. Energy optimization results of the proposed design demonstrated an 11.04% increase in the net power generation from the feasible configuration of the base design. Additionally, the cause of this improvement was studied using thermodynamic analyses.
