In this work, we report on the electro-optical characterization of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) which use ruthenium complexes as sensitizers. In particular, several kinds of measurements have been performed to study the electrical performances and the efficiency levels of the cells at different operating conditions. In detail, the measurements have been conducted at varying temperatures and hours of light soaking. Our results show that the short circuit current density J SC , the open circuit voltage V OC and the conversion efficiency η increase with the hours of light soaking, while they decrease with temperature. A thorough investigation on the light soaking process at the device level has been carried out, giving a wealth of experimental data which can be very useful to better single out and quantify the underlying physical phenomena and the effects on the cell parameters, which are still controversial among the scientific community. Finally, the ageing study demonstrates that the cell performance rapidly deteriorates in the first few months of exposure to light. All the obtained results are of great importance for a better understanding of the light soaking phenomenon and for improving the fabrication process of the DSSCs investigated during this study. We present a framework for the linear parametric analysis of pairwise interactions in bivariate time series in the time and frequency domains, which allows the evaluation of total, causal and instantaneous interactions and connects time- and frequency-domain measures. The framework is applied to physiological time series to investigate the cerebrovascular regulation from the variability of mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the cardiovascular regulation from the variability of heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP). We analyze time series acquired at rest and during the early and late phase of head-up tilt in subjects developing orthostatic syncope in response to prolonged postural stress, and in healthy controls. The spectral measures of total, causal and instantaneous coupling between HP and SAP, and between MAP and CBFV, are averaged in the low-frequency band of the spectrum to focus on specific rhythms, and over all frequencies to get time-domain measures. The analysis of cardiovascular interactions indicates that postural stress induces baroreflex involvement, and its prolongation induces baroreflex dysregulation in syncope subjects. The analysis of cerebrovascular interactions indicates that the postural stress enhances the total coupling between MAP and CBFV, and challenges cerebral autoregulation in syncope subjects, while the strong sympathetic activation elicited by prolonged postural stress in healthy controls may determine an increased coupling from CBFV to MAP during late tilt. These results document that the combination of time-domain and spectral measures allows us to obtain an integrated view of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular regulation in healthy and diseased subjects. Healthcare is expected to increasingly shift care out of inpatient settings thanks to wearable monitoring systems. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an optical technique already integrated into wrist-worn commercial products which presents significant advantages in terms of cost and dimensions. PPG-based devices, despite their ability to detect multiple cardiovascular parameters, are affected by several influencing conditions that depend both on technological or environmental variables, and on intra- and inter-subject variability that influences the whole measurement chain and reliability, hindering an objective characterization of PPG devices. Plus, the lack of standardization for data collection and processing leads to the lack of generalizability and reproducibility of results, preventing the full exploitation of the potential prognostic capacity of this technology. Thus, this review aims not only to summarize the main influencing parameters of PPG technology, which should be addressed when testing the sensor, but also to suggest tentative guidelines for a possible future standardization initiative. In this work, we report on the modelling of light soaking effect on Ruthenium-based Dye Sensitized Solar cells (DSSCs). Such a phenomenon can be detected when exposing the cells at increasing hours of illumination and produces a reversible performance increase. Starting from the results obtained through the electro-optical characterization of the cells, we applied a one-diode circuital-model. Our results show a good agreement between the experimental and the simulated data, with a mean square error in the order of 10 −12 and a maximum error in current lower than 0.6%. Finally such results allowed us to infer some precise trends followed by the cells main electrical parameters and of their equivalent one-diode electrical model due to light soaking effect. • We present how the acceleration and gyroscope signals correlate with the motion artifacts (MAs) of PPG signals. • We demonstrate HR estimation using PPG signals can be inaccurate even with acceleration and/or gyroscope as a MA reference. • We propose an adaptive MA reference selection approach using acceleration and gyroscope signals. • Our proposed approach can be used in other MA cancelation methods for the HR estimation error reduction. • We believe this study will help many researchers studying wearable devices to understand accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. Recently, various algorithms have been introduced using wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG) to provide high accuracy of instantaneous heart rate (HR) estimation, including during high-intensity exercise. Most studies focus on using acceleration and/or gyroscope signals for the motion artifact (MA) reference, which attenuates or cancels out noise from the MA-corrupted PPG signals. We aim to open and pave the path to find an appropriate MA reference selection for MA cancelation in PPG. We investigated how the acceleration and gyroscope reference signals correlate with the MAs of the distorted PPG signals and derived both mathematically and experimentally an adaptive MA reference selection approach. We applied our algorithm to five state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods for the performance evaluation. In addition, we compared the four MA reference selection approaches, i.e. with acceleration signal only, with gyroscope signal only, with both signals, and using our proposed adaptive selection. When applied to 47 PPG recordings acquired during intensive physical exercise from two different datasets, our proposed adaptive MA reference selection method provided higher accuracy than the other MA selection approaches for all five SOTA methods. Our proposed adaptive MA reference selection approach can be used in other MA cancelation methods and reduces the HR estimation error. We believe that this study helps researchers to address acceleration and gyroscope signals as accurate MA references, which eventually improves the overall performance for estimating HRs through the various algorithms developed by research groups. Abstract: Responsive hydrogels filling the interstitial spaces of photonic crystals can form mesoscopically structured materials, which exhibit reversible shifts in the Bragg diffracted light as a response of environmental changes. These materials can be used to generate chemical or biochemical sensors. The present work reports on the synthesis and characterization of ethanol responsive hydrogels that can be used in the design of novel breathalyzers. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the macroscopic hydrogels and their swelling features in the presence of different liquids or vapors have been investigated to orientate the choice of the best responsive material and curing process. The swelling behavior of a selected hydrogel embedding the photonic crystal made of polystyrene nanoparticles as function of the concentration of ethanol vapor was studied through UV–Vis optical transmission spectroscopy and compared to the behavior of the macrogel analogue.
