• Analyses of agricultural transitions to sustainability face two key challenges: • 1. The challenge of identifying variations in farming systems and their interactions. • 2. The challenge of identifying competing visions of sustainability. • We combine three theoretical frameworks to tackle these challenges. • Coexistence between different farming models, including agroecology, is possible. The contribution of the multi-level perspective (MLP) to study transition dynamics is widely recognized. MLP involves examining interactions between three socio-technical levels: niche, regime and landscape. Empirical analysis of niche-regime interactions when applying this framework to agricultural transitions to sustainability remains challenging, however. The diversity of historical farming systems within a region can make niches and regimes highly heterogeneous. In addition, agricultural transitions to sustainability may be driven as much by technological changes as by institutional features, including normative rules and cultural cognitive rules that are less adequately addressed by MLP. To tackle these two challenges, we combined MLP with two additional frameworks to describe transition processes: the comparative agriculture framework, drawn from agro-economic, geographic and historical analyses of agricultural crises, and the justification of practices framework, drawn from pragmatic sociology. In this paper, we apply these three frameworks to the fresh vegetable production sector in Wallonia (Belgium) and discuss visions of transition through the lens of the agroecological paradigm. This leads us to predict a situation of coexistence between two socio-technical configurations of production: an old, organic and conventional configuration reoriented toward more commercial autonomy for the producers, and a new configuration oriented toward agroecology. The study contributes to a major debate discussing the extent to which the agroecological paradigm is being co-opted by the regime or remains faithful to its original principles and opens up perspectives for public policy development in the context of increasing governmental attention to the agroecological paradigm. This article discusses the economic dimensions of agroecological farming systems in Europe. It firstly theoretically elaborates the reasons why, and under what conditions, agroecological farming systems have the potential to produce higher incomes than farms that follow the conventional logic. This theoretical exposition is then followed by a presentation of empirical material from a wide range of European countries that shows the extent to which this potential is being realized. The empirical data draw upon different styles of farming that can be described as 'proto-agroecological': approaches to farming that are agroecological by nature, but which may not necessarily explicitly define themselves as agroecological. The empirical material that we present shows the huge potential and radical opportunities that Europe's, often silent, 'agroecological turn' offers to farmers that could (and should) be the basis for the future transformation of European agricultural policies, since agroecology not only allows for more sustainable production of healthier food but also considerably improves farmers' incomes. It equally carries the promise of re-enlarging productive agricultural (and related) employment and increasing the total income generated by the agricultural sector, at both regional and national levels. While we recognise that agroecology is a worldwide and multidimensional phenomenon we have chosen to limit this analysis to Europe and the economic dimension. Agricultural globalization is blamed for destructive impacts on small farms in developing countries. Yet, many local societies are proactive in the face of these changes and show high adaptive capacity. Investigating their transformations with an integrative perspective and enough hindsight may reveal some of the bases of their resilience and adaptive capacity. Using field data and the panarchy concept of resilience theory, we analyzed the territorial and social dynamics of quinoa growers’ communities in southern Bolivia over the last four decades, a case study of regime shift in a poverty-stricken rural society which deliberately entered the global food market. Linking the dynamics of the household economy to the territorial and social subsystems over several decades, we gained insights into the interactions that shaped the rise of quinoa production in the region. We found that a vivid tradition of mobility allowing for pluriactivity on- and off-farm, combined with community self-governance, explains how local populations succeeded in articulating individual agency with collective control over their commons of land, seed resources, and social rules. Our vulnerability analysis points to landscape homogenization, social inequity, and increased dependence on external factors as potential sources of unsustainability. We conclude that, to cope with the changes of unprecedented magnitude they are facing, local producers should retain social cohesion and autonomous governance, without giving up on their heritage of mobility and economic redundancy. As regards theory, we identified cross-scale subsystem configurations critical for regime shifts, and confirm the value of panarchy in capturing complex socioecological dynamics. Background & Aims: Hepatic lipid retention (steatosis) predisposes hepatitis. We investigated the mechanisms of lymphocyte homing to fatty liver and the role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the onset of inflammation in ob/ob mice. Methods: We decreased intestinal bacterial compounds by oral antibiotic treatment to test the role of endogenous LPS in liver inflammation. Adoptive transfer of lymphocytes was used to study the respective contributions of steatosis and lymphocytes to liver inflammation. We tested lymphocyte response to chemokines by in vitro chemotaxis assays in ob/ob, their lean controls, and “non-obese ob/ob” mice, generated by controlling caloric intake to distinguish between the effects of obesity and leptin deficiency. Results: Antibiotic treatment decreased liver infiltration with CD4+ T, CD8+ T, natural killer (NK)T, B, and NK cells. Adoptive transfer of lymphocytes from ob/ob or control mice showed that (1) steatosis increased lymphocyte recruitment to the liver; (2) CD4+ T, CD8+ T, and B cells from ob/ob mice had a greater propensity to migrate specifically to the liver. This migration was enhanced by LPS. These results were also observed in a model of high-fat diet-induced obesity. CD4+ T and B cells were hyperresponsive to CXCL12 and CXCL13, respectively. Weight normalization in “non-obese ob/ob” mice decreased liver inflammation, lymphocyte response to chemokines, and homing to the liver. Conclusions: Our study provides the first evidence that liver inflammation in mice with genetic or diet-induced obesity results from both steatosis and lymphocyte hyperresponsiveness to chemokines expressed in the liver.
