Open-source software (OSS) is free to use and has accessible source codes, thus, it can be modified by various users. By using OSS, it is possible to easily and economically develop a target program for interaction studies in terramechanics. Yet Another Dynamic Engine (YADE) is an OSS for the 3D discrete element method (DEM), but its applicability to various contact interaction problems in terramechanics is not well-known. To investigate the applicability of YADE in terramechanics, the tractive performance of a lugged wheel was analyzed in this study. An idea of a proportional-integral-differential control model was applied to realize the constant rotation of the wheel in YADE. Our previous experiments on the locomotion of a small lugged wheel on a lunar-soil simulant were analyzed by YADE, and the results were found to be qualitatively similar to the obtained experimental results when considering the effects of the lug height, lug thickness, lug number, and wheel diameter. By applying a quasi-2D analysis with the same soil bin width and wheel width, the computational load of 3D DEM by YADE can be reduced up to 36.8% with similar net traction behavior against the wheel slip in a 3D analysis. • Effect of open spaces between grousers was analyzed by DEM. • 2D DEM analysis could estimate gross traction qualitatively. • With larger open spaces, gross traction became decreased. • With larger open spaces, sinkage of grouser became increased. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of open spaces between grousers on gross traction using the discrete element method (DEM). We used a quasi-2D track shoe model in which we could control the open spacing between track shoes to observe the tractive performance experimentally. The gross traction and the sinkage of the grouser were measured on artificial sand. Moreover, we applied a 2D DEM analysis to the interaction between the open-spaced track shoes and the model soil. We confirmed the accuracy of the DEM analysis using the experiments. The analysis with the model dry sand could recreate the characteristic region of the soil under the shearing action, which depends on the track shoe spacing. The DEM also showed that the gross traction decreased with the increase in open spacing of the grousers. From the result of a 2D DEM analysis of a grouser for a prototype mesh crawler for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, we estimated a thrust coefficient of approximately 0.4 for a wider grouser pitch-to-height ratio of 4.0–7.75 because of the constant sinkage of the grouser, neglecting the role of the meshed belt. This study examines a new finite element/discrete element method (FE-DEM) with interchangeable modeling between FEM and DEM for tire traction analysis. In the method, named iFE-DEM, the soil in a soil bin is modeled initially by FEM except for the region under or near the tire, which is modeled using DEM. When the FEM tire model starts to travel over DEM soil elements, the updated tire location will activate new conversion of modeling from FEM to DEM so that the zone of influence around the contact interface between tire and soil can be analyzed continuously using DEM. Those mobilized DEM elements rearward of the tire might be converted again to FEM elements by assuming that the effect of the stress state in DEM generated by tire travel might be negligible. The computational time for two-dimensional iFE-DEM analysis of a slip of 40% using the smallest region of initial DEM under the tire could be reduced to 23% of that obtained using DEM only soil modeling. Normal and tangential stresses acting over a contact interface of a tire driven on dry sand were investigated to expand the applicability of our model incorporating 2D FE–DEM with proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control. A simple averaging method for contact reaction was introduced: computational segments were defined over the lower half part of the tire circumference that translates without rotation with the tire; then the contact stresses were calculated segment by segment. For the analysis, it was assumed that the tire was in rigid contact mode and that it would travel on the model sand terrain in stationary condition. The integration of normal and tangential contact stresses with respect to the angle of rotation was then applied to calculate the vertical contact load, gross tractive effort, net traction, and running resistance of the tire by parametric (or semi-empirical) analysis. The result of tractive performance obtained through the parametric analysis was found to be similar to the result of tractive performance obtained directly using FE–DEM analysis. A forward shift of the consistent angle of rotation for maximum normal contact stress and that for maximum tangential contact stress with the increase of slip from 22% was also observed in the FE–DEM result. Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni is a plant that biosynthesizes a group of natural sweeteners that are up to approximately 400 times sweeter than sucrose. The sweetening components of S. rebaudiana are steviol glycosides (SGs) that partially share their biosynthesis pathway with gibberellins (GAs). However, the molecular mechanisms through which SGs levels can be improved have not been studied. Therefore, transcription levels of several SG biosynthesis-related genes were analyzed under several light treatments involved in GA biosynthesis. We detected higher transcription of UGT85C2, which is one of the UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) involved in catalyzing the sugar-transfer reaction, under red/far-red (R/FR) 1.22 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and blue LEDs treatment. In this study, it was demonstrated that transcription levels of SG-related genes and the SGs content are affected by light treatments known to affect the GA contents. We have been developing a simulation program for use with soil–wheel interaction problems by coupling Finite Element Method (FEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) for which a wheel is modeled by FEM and soil is expressed by DEM. Previous two-dimensional FE–DEM was updated to analyze the tractive performance of a flexible elastic wheel by introducing a new algorithm learned from the PID-controller model. In an elastic wheel model, four structural parts were defined using FEM: the wheel rim, intermediate part, surface layer, and wheel lugs. The wheel rigidity was controlled by varying the Young’s Modulus of the intermediate part. The tractive performance of two elastic wheels with lugs for planetary rovers of the European Space Agency was analyzed. Numerical results were compared with experimentally obtained results collected at DLR Bremen, Germany. The FE–DEM result was confirmed to depict similar behaviors of tractive performance such as gross tractive effort, net traction, running resistance, and wheel sinkage, as in the results of experiments. Moreover, the tractive performance of elastic wheels on Mars was predicted using FE–DEM. Results clarified that no significant difference of net traction exists between the two wheels. In the development of DEM programs for interaction studies, 2D DEM analysis is often compared to the results of experiments done in 3D conditions. From an alternative viewpoint, a quasi-2D experiment was designed for this study to collect results of gross tractive effort and to examine the accuracy of 2D DEM applied to soil–grouser systems. To intensify the understanding and comparison of the grouser reaction and soil behavior, a soil model incorporating aluminum cylinders was used in the experiment instead of real soil. The particle size distribution of model soil was approximated by the combination of cylinders of two radii. The bulk density was set to be identical in DEM and the experiment. The normal spring constant and the coefficient of rolling friction in the contact model of DEM were adjusted using trial and error, considering the allowable time step, sinkage of the grouser, and the slope angle of the cavity behind the grouser. The developed 2D DEM program was confirmed to have sufficient capability to reproduce the experimentally obtained results of gross tractive effort with nine combinations of conditions of grouser height and grouser thickness. Abstract: This study is a comparative investigation of data, collected through experimental and numerical means, related to the flow of sand particles through a hopper under low-gravity conditions. During a parabolic airplane flight simulating low-gravity conditions, we determined effects of gravity on the angle of repose of sand pile particles by flowing dry sand from a hopper. The gravity effects on the angle of repose of the sand were negligible. Two-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) was used to simulate the angle of repose. Results were compared to observations made during the low-gravity experiments. Effects of varying parameters such as the friction coefficient and coefficient of rolling friction were determined by running various DEM simulations. Moreover, the effect of the elemental radius on the angle of repose was investigated using DEM. The angle of repose is influenced by certain changes in the friction coefficient and rolling friction values, but the elemental radius has only a negligible effect on the angle of repose within the range of variation. Results show that the DEM model used for this study might be applicable to determine terramechanical interactions under lunar surface gravity conditions, provided that parameters are adjusted and an extended period of simulation is achieved. Abstract: Needless to say, we are now facing a critical state in the global environment, i.e. global warming. We have to change our way of thinking and our economic systems from those dependent on fossil resources to those dependent on renewable energy resources, such as solar energy. In our field of research, electric vehicles are considered the best choice for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. A battery is not an adequate energy source for electric vehicles, because batteries quickly get depleted because of its low energy and power density. A fuel cell is a more favorable alternative to the battery; however, it has large mass and can only replace the internal combustion engine, but the power transmission mechanisms are still necessary. The new concept of an electric off-road vehicle proposed here is entirely different from those mentioned above. The vehicle has neither a combustion engine nor a battery but only electric motors. Energy to drive the motors is transmitted through air as microwaves at 2.45GHz. This technology was developed at the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kyoto University, as a method for transmitting electricity from a large-scale solar power station (SPS) orbiting in space to the Earth. We have constructed some models of electric off-road vehicles and investigated their adoptability to microwave power transmission. In this paper, some experimental results on the use of microwave power transmission for powering the vehicles are presented, and some problems such as low energy transmission efficiency are also discussed.
