Objectives New Perspectives (NP) aims to prevent that youth at onset of a criminal career will develop a more persistent criminal behavior pattern. The study aim was to examine whether NP was effective relative to care as usual in preventing and reducing (persistent) delinquency. Moreover, we examined improvements in secondary outcomes (e.g., peer and parent relationships and cognitive distortions) and other outcomes (e.g., substance use and self-esteem). Methods At-risk youth ( N = 101) aged 12 to 19 years were randomly assigned to the intervention group (NP, n = 47) or control group (‘care as usual’, n = 54). The effects of the NP intensive phase (3 months after program start) and aftercare phase (6 months after program start) were analyzed. Results NP and care as usual did not differ on any of the outcome measures at both post-test occasions. The effects of NP were the same for boys and girls, different age groups, and ethnic groups. Abstract: The longstanding, successful use of herbal drug combinations in traditional medicine makes it necessary to find a rationale for the pharmacological and therapeutic superiority of many of them in comparison to isolated single constituents. This review describes many examples of how modern molecular–biological methods (including new genomic technologies) can enable us to understand the various synergistic mechanisms underlying these effects. Synergistic effects can be produced if the constituents of an extract affect different targets or interact with one another in order to improve the solubility and thereby enhance the bioavailability of one or several substances of an extract. A special synergy effect can occur when antibiotics are combined with an agent that antagonizes bacterial resistance mechanisms. The verification of real synergy effects can be achieved through detailed pharmacological investigations and by means of controlled clinical studies performed in comparison with synthetic reference drugs. All the new ongoing projects aim at the development of a new generation of phytopharmaceuticals which can be used alone or in combination with synthetic drugs or antibiotics. This new generation of phytopharmaceuticals could lend phytotherapy a new legitimacy and enable their use to treat diseases which have hitherto been treated using synthetic drugs alone. Abstract: In this introductory article of the special issue of Brain Research, we first present an overview of some general questions relating to cognitive control. For instance, one of the questions that remain to be answered is what control mechanisms and their neural underpinnings really ‘do’, beyond what is done by more basic ‘computational’ or data processing systems in the brain. We then briefly describe the four major issues addressed in the separate articles of this issue, namely attentional orienting, task set switching, performance and error monitoring, and response inhibition. In conclusion, we focus on some new methodological directions and illustrate how the study of cognitive control may be augmented by relatively newly emerging theoretical and empirical perspectives.
