Computing the smallest number q such that the vertices of a given graph can be properly q -colored, known as the chromatic number , is one of the oldest and most fundamental problems in combinatorial optimization. The q -Coloring problem has been studied intensively using the framework of parameterized algorithmics, resulting in a very good understanding of the best-possible algorithms for several parameterizations based on the structure of the graph. For example, algorithms are known to solve the problem on graphs of treewidth tw in time O ⁎ (q tw) , while a running time of O ⁎ ((q − ε) tw) is impossible assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH). While there is an abundance of work for parameterizations based on decompositions of the graph by vertex separators , almost nothing is known about parameterizations based on edge separators. We fill this gap by studying q -Coloring parameterized by cutwidth, and parameterized by pathwidth in bounded-degree graphs. Our research uncovers interesting new ways to exploit small edge separators. We present two algorithms for q -Coloring parameterized by cutwidth ctw: a deterministic one that runs in time O ⁎ (2 ω ⋅ ctw ) , where ω is the square matrix multiplication exponent, and a randomized one with runtime O ⁎ (2 ctw). In sharp contrast to earlier work, the running time is independent of q. The dependence on cutwidth is optimal: we prove that even 3-Coloring cannot be solved in O ⁎ ((2 − ε) ctw) time assuming SETH. Our algorithms rely on a new rank bound for a matrix that describes compatible colorings. Combined with a simple communication protocol for evaluating a product of two polynomials, this also yields an O ⁎ ((⌊ d / 2 ⌋ + 1) pw) time randomized algorithm for q -Coloring on graphs of pathwidth pw and maximum degree d. Such a runtime was first obtained by Björklund, but only for graphs with few proper colorings. We also prove that this result is optimal in the sense that no O ⁎ ((⌊ d / 2 ⌋ + 1 − ε) pw) -time algorithm exists assuming SETH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Cardiac hexokinase II (HKII) can translocate between cytosol and mitochondria and change its cellular expression with pathologies such as ischemia–reperfusion, diabetes and heart failure. The cardiac metabolic consequences of these changes are unknown. Here we measured energy substrate utilization in cytosol and mitochondria using stabile isotopes and oxygen consumption of the intact perfused heart for 1) an acute decrease in mitochondrial HKII (mtHKII), and 2) a chronic decrease in total cellular HKII. Methods/results We first examined effects of 200 nM TAT (Trans-Activator of Transcription)-HKII peptide treatment, which was previously shown to acutely decrease mtHKII by ~ 30%. In Langendorff-perfused hearts TAT-HKII resulted in a modest, but significant, increased oxygen consumption, while cardiac performance was unchanged. At the metabolic level, there was a nonsignificant (p = 0.076) ~ 40% decrease in glucose contribution to pyruvate and lactate formation through glycolysis and to mitochondrial citrate synthase flux (6.6 ± 1.1 vs. 11.2 ± 2.2%), and an 35% increase in tissue pyruvate (27 ± 2 vs. 20 ± 2 pmol/mg; p = 0.033). Secondly, we compared WT and HKII +/− hearts (50% chronic decrease in total HKII). RNA sequencing revealed no differential gene expression between WT and HKII +/− hearts indicating an absence of metabolic reprogramming at the transcriptional level. Langendorff-perfused hearts showed no significant differences in glycolysis (0.34 ± 0.03 μ mol/min), glucose contribution to citrate synthase flux (35 ± 2.3%), palmitate contribution to citrate synthase flux (20 ± 1.1%), oxygen consumption or mechanical performance between WT and HKII +/− hearts. Conclusions These results indicate that acute albeit not chronic changes in mitochondrial HKII modestly affect cardiac oxygen consumption and energy substrate metabolism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Anastomotic leakage is a severe complication after esophagectomy. The objective was to investigate the diagnostic and predictive value of routine contrast swallow study and endoscopy for the detection of anastomotic dehiscence in patients after esophagectomy. Methods: All patients who underwent contrast swallow and/or endoscopy within 7 days after oesophagectomy for cancer between January 2005 and December 2009 were selected from an institutional database. Results: Some 173 patients underwent endoscopy, and 184 patients underwent a contrast swallow study. The sensitivity of endoscopy for anastomotic leakage requiring intervention is 56 %, specificity 41 %, positive predictive value (PPV) 8 %, and negative predictive value (NPV) 95 %. The sensitivity of contrast swallow study for detecting leakage requiring intervention in patients without signs of leakage was 20 %, specificity 20 %, PPV 3 %, and NPV 97 %.Conclusions: In patients without clinical suspicion of leakage, there is no benefit to perform routine examinations. Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits are related to a wide range of clinical outcome in patients with psychotic disorders. However, it is not sufficiently clear whether psychotic illness, particularly fluctuation in negative symptoms and psychotic relapse, affects personality. The current study examined the 3-year temporal stability of FFM traits in 91 patients with non-affective psychotic disorders with a maximum duration of illness of 10 years and 32 control subjects without a (family member with) a diagnosis of psychotic illness. In patients, change in negative symptoms predicted changes in Neuroticism and (inversely) in Extraversion and Openness. However, when correcting for depressive symptoms, negative symptoms no longer predicted change in any FFM trait. Clinical characteristics, such as psychotic relapse, were also not found to be related to change in FFM traits. Patients showed a slight increase in Conscientiousness levels, the other FFM traits showed mean-level stability. Rank-order stability of the FFM traits was moderate to strong, although weaker for Neuroticism in patients. Our findings indicate that psychotic symptoms exert limited effect on the stability of FFM traits in patients with psychotic disorders. Consistent with general population findings, one should guard against state-trait confusion between Neuroticism/Extraversion and depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights: [•] Staged feeding is very advantageous in the ODH reaction of EB to ST. [•] Conversion of EB and ST selectivity are a function of the overall O2 to EB molar feed ratio. [•] Maintaining a low (local) O2 partial pressures is essential for high ST selectivity. [•] The lower partial pressure of O2 and EB will result in a lower catalyst activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Since the 19th century, it has been widely acknowledged that persons with a psychotic disorder are more often involved in violent crimes than those without mental problems, which is confirmed by several recent review papers and meta-analytic studies. However, the caveats and limitations of these studies have been largely neglected. In the present systematic review paper, the epidemiological studies that were published since 1980 on the link between psychosis and violent behavior were critically reviewed. Electronic databases were searched to initially identify 5756 articles. A total of 26 articles were eventually selected as they met all selection criteria. Studies were categorized according to their research design (i.e., birth cohort, community, register/record-based). Although schizophrenia and other related psychotic disorders seem to be undoubtedly associated with violent behavior (with OR''s between 2 and 28), it should be kept in mind that underlying variables or risk factors (e.g., family history of violence, emotions such as anger and anxiety, impulsivity, childhood problems), the study design, and conceptual problems (i.e., definitions of violence/aggression and schizophrenia/psychosis) might be particularly relevant when interpreting the link between violence and psychosis. Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of various types of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) and their relationship with self-reported aggressive behavior, while controlling for some personality factors and confounding variables. A total of 759 students participated and filled out various questionnaires on PLEs, aggressive behavior, and personality characteristics. Results indicated that the majority of the sample showed at least some signs of PLEs. Most importantly, a clear relationship was found between PLEs and aggressive behavior, with hallucinatory behavior emerging as the most robust correlate. This type of PLEs accounted for a significant and unique proportion in the variance of aggressive behavior, even after controlling for the influence of neuroticism, dispositional anger and anxiety, and drug use. These results provide further evidence for the association between psychosis and aggression in non-clinical samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Vitens uses ground water from deep confined aquifers as one of her drinking water sources. These sources have an excellent raw water quality due to the absence of anthropogenic contaminants. However, the wells are susceptible for upconing of brackish groundwater. As a result several wells had to be abandoned leading to a reduced production capacity. Recently the ‘fresh holder’ concept was introduced by Kiwa Water Research to solve this problem. It is not clear yet if this concept is allowed and if there are any technical problems. In order to investigate both the technical and political implications of the described concept a demonstration project is set up near the city of Deventer. The first step is to see whether the required permits can be obtained. Since this is a new application, the discussion with the authorities will be started in an early stage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
