Analyze the usefulness, efficacy, and safety of transoperative magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI) in glioma surgery in awake patients. Retrospective, single-center, analytical study of a cohort of patients who underwent awake surgery for gliomas by the same surgeon in a third-level Argentine center, in the period between 2012 and 2022. Only patients with pathology-confirmed gliomas, with 6-month follow-up, who had preoperative and postoperative volumetric magnetic resonance imaging, were included in this sample. Subsequently, we analyzed which patients received surgery with the tMRI protocol and the results using multivariate regression analysis. A total of 71 patients were included. A tMRI study was performed on 22 (31%) of these patients. The use of tMRI increased the percentage of resection by 20% (P = 0.03), thereby increasing the possibility of gross total resection. However, using tMRI significantly extended surgical time by 84 minutes (P < 0.001). In 55% of the patients in whom tMRI was performed, the resection was continued after it. The use of tMRI did not increase the rate of infections or the development of surgically associated neurological deficits in the long term, despite the fact that 47% of the patients showed the development of a new deficit or worsening of a previous one during the intraoperative period. The use of tMRI in awake glioma surgery proved to be a safe tool that contributes to increasing the degree of tumor resection, compared to the use of neurophysiological mapping and neuronavigation, at the expense of increased surgical times and costs. Background: Ultra-processed foodstuffs have been replacing traditional beans with tortillas in the Mexican diet in the last decades. Therefore, scientific support is needed to promote a return to good-quality traditional dishes.Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the amino acid digestibility and score of pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) consumed with corn tortillas and guacamole in adults using the dual-tracer method.Methods: The pinto beans were intrinsically labeled using 250 mL of 2H2O (99.8%) per 19 L pot with 3 plants. A paste of cooked beans on toasted corn tortillas and guacamole topping were administered to 3 male and 3 female adults (21-25 years old; BMI, 19-23.5 kg/m2). The protocol was plateau feeding given along with U-[13C]-spirulina protein to evaluate indispensable amino acid (IAA) digestibility using the dual-tracer method. Blood samples were taken in the plateau state. The digestibility of each IAA of the bean protein was calculated by the ratio of its enrichment in the beans to the spirulina in the meal and its appearance in plasma collected in the plateau state, as a percentage corrected by spirulina digestibility. Additionally, the digestible IAA score (DIAAS) was calculated.Results: The 2H enrichment of IAA in the pinto beans was 471 parts per million excess. The isotopic enrichment of 2H and 13C in IAA at 5-8 hours presented plateau states with mean CVs of 12.2% and 13.3%, respectively. The mean digestibility of IAA from pinto beans was 77% ± 1.6%, with the lowest value for threonine. The DIAAS calculated with respect to the pattern requirement for children older than 3 years, adolescents, and adults was 83%, with methionine and cysteine being the limiting amino acids.Conclusions: A Mexican dish of pinto beans, tortillas, and guacamole is a good source of protein as evaluated in adults and could be promoted as a nutritious snack. Breast cancer patients (BCP) during treatment often experience an increase in body weight and fat mass, and a decrease in muscle mass known as sarcopenic obesity, affecting their prognosis and quality of life. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a 6-month individualized food-based nutrition intervention program in nonmetastatic BCP body composition during treatment. This is a pre-post study in recently diagnosed women with invasive ductal/lobular breast carcinoma (clinical stage I-III). The individualized nutrition intervention was based on the dynamic macronutrient meal equivalent menu method (MEM). Dietary plans were developed according to WCRF/AICR guidelines, BCP total energy expenditure, 1.2–1.5 g/kgBW/d of protein intake, 5–9 servings/day of fruits and vegetables, and a caloric restriction (500–1000 kcal/d) when applicable (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). Follow-up was every 2-weeks and a different diet menu was provided in each session during 6 months. Baseline and final measurements included the assessment of anthropometry, body composition, and physical activity. Twenty-two participants completed the study and at diagnosis 68% were overweighed or obese. After the 6-month nutrition intervention program, BCP lost 3.1 kg (p < 0.01) of body weight, 2.7 kg (p < 0.01) of fat-mass, 400 g (p < 0.01) of abdominal fat, 118 g (p < 0.05) of visceral fat, 1.2 kg/m2 of body mass index and 1.1 kg/m2 of fat mass index (p < 0.01). During the period, no changes were observed in bone mineral density (p = 0.3), fat-free mass (p = 0.1) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (p = 0.2). Menopausal status in BCP did not modify the effect of the nutrition intervention. The individualized food-based nutrition intervention program empowered BCP to make informed healthy food choices within their personal preferences, socioeconomic and cultural background. With this type of intervention, nonmetastatic BCP reduced body weight, fat-mass, fat mass index, visceral and abdominal fat, while preserving skeletal muscle mass, during antineoplastic treatment. • Total visceral fat (VAT) area can be opportunistically estimated from MRI scans using different abdominal sites. • Total VAT area, and individual VAT locations are similarly associated to the MetSx. • The association of VAT with MetSx is consistently stronger than that of BMI among women. • Medical MRI scans could be used opportunistically to evaluate cardiometabolic risk. To determine if visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area measured through MRI can be used opportunistically to assess the presence of cardiometabolic risk factors and compare its performance to simpler adiposity measures. A cross-sectional analysis was carried out on a subset of 1683 participants (856 women) from the Adiposity Phenotype Study (mean age = 69.2y; range 59.9–77.4). The association of total VAT area (sum of four cross sections, L1–L2, L2–L3, L3–L4, L4–L5) and each location, as well as BMI and body fat % (per SD) with the metabolic syndrome (MetSx) or its components was evaluated through logistic regression analysis. Total VAT can be accurately predicted using all sites evaluated (R2 range = 0.82−0.96). In men, VAT did not show a superior association to MetSx compared to BMI in men. However, in women, VAT was consistently superior to BMI and body fat % in its association to MetSx, independent of ethnicity [odds ratio for BMI, body fat %and total VAT area = 2.25 (95% CI: 1.93–2.62); 1.66 (95% CI: 1.36–2.03); 6.20 (95% CI: 4.69–8.21) respectively in all women]. Ethnic-specific odds ratios to MetSx in women ranged from 5.38 to 8.63 for total VAT area and 2.12–4.08 for BMI. Total VAT area can be accurately predicted from individual VAT regions in men and women and offers superior association to BMI for MetSx in women but not in men for five ethnicities. Background: Retinol isotope dilution (RID) and model-based compartmental analysis are recognized techniques for assessing vitamin A (VA) status. Recent studies have shown that RID predictions of VA total body stores (TBS) can be improved by using modeling and that VA kinetics and TBS in children can be effectively studied by applying population modeling ("super-child" approach) to a composite data set.Objectives: The objectives were to model whole-body retinol kinetics and predict VA TBS in a group of Mexican preschoolers using the super-child approach and to use model predictions of RID coefficients to estimate TBS by RID in individuals.Methods: Twenty-four healthy Mexican children (aged 3-6 y) received an oral dose (2.96 μmol) of [13C10]retinyl acetate in corn oil. Blood samples were collected from 8 h to 21 d after dosing, with each child sampled at 4 d and at 1 other time. Composite data for plasma labeled retinol compared with time were analyzed using a 6-component model to obtain group retinol kinetic parameters and pool sizes. Model-predicted TBS was compared with mean RID predictions at 4 d; RID estimates at 4 d were compared with those calculated at 7-21 d.Results: Model-predicted TBS was 1097 μmol, equivalent to ∼2.4 y-worth of VA; using model-derived coefficients, group mean RID-predicted TBS was 1096 μmol (IQR: 836-1492 μmol). TBS at 4 d compared with a later time was similar (P = 0.33). The model predicted that retinol spent 1.5 h in plasma during each transit and recycled to plasma 13 times before utilization.Conclusions: The super-child modeling approach provides information on whole-body VA kinetics and can be used with RID to estimate TBS at any time between 4 and 21 d postdose. Abstract Wildfires have important ecological and socio-economic implications worldwide. Identifying the major ecological drivers regulating fire activity across space and time is critical to formulating sustainable policies of landscape planning and management under global change scenarios. However, large scale studies quantifying the relative importance of relevant fire drivers across different time periods are largely lacking. We conducted a high-resolution spatial survey in Central Chile and used structural equation models (SEMs) to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of climate, human impact, land uses, and topography on the number of fires and burned area across two distinct periods of time (2000–2005 and 2011–2016). Mean temperature and agricultural use had the highest direct positive effect on the number of fires and burned area in the two studied periods, and thus were the major ecological predictors of fire activity. Human impact was also an important predictor of fire attributes. Topography had multiple indirect effects on fire activity by regulating land use, temperature, and human impact, but direct effects were negligible. Precipitation seasonality, drought and aridity indexes, native forests, and plantations, were less relevant predictors of fire activity. Even so, our SEMs suggested that areas dominated by native forests tended to have lower number of fires than those covered by croplands or plantations. Our results suggest that fire activity in Central Chile will be highly sensitive to increases in human pressure, land use change and warming by climate change. Because the relative importance of the predictors of fire activity was steady over time, the knowledge derived from this study provides critical insights for preventive fire management and landscape planning. Progesterone receptor (PR) is a master regulator in female reproductive tissues that controls developmental processes and proliferation and differentiation during the reproductive cycle and pregnancy. PR also plays a role in progression of endocrine-dependent breast cancer. As a member of the nuclear receptor family of ligand-dependent transcription factors, the main action of PR is to regulate networks of target gene expression in response to binding its cognate steroid hormone, progesterone. Liganded-PR transcriptional activation has been thoroughly studied and associated mechanisms have been described while progesterone-mediated repression has remained less explored. The present work summarizes recent advances in the understanding of how PR-mediated repression is accomplished in breast cancer cells and highlights the significance of fully understanding the determinants of context-dependent PR action. We evaluated the radial growth response of adult Nothofagus pumilio (Poepp. et Endl) Krasser trees affected by tephra deposition following historical volcanic eruptions of the Puyehue–Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex (PCCVC) in northern Patagonia. Standard tree–ring width chronologies were developed for trees from two sites that were affected by up to 55 cm of tephra during the 2011 eruption, which allowed us to detect the general tree–growth response to eruptions VEI ≥ 3 and VEI ≤ 2. The tree growth trend satisfactorily followed the mean temperature record (r = 0.42); however, the analysis of studentized residuals identified outliers (≥ ± 2 SD) directly related to the volcanic eruptions of the years 1921–1922 and 2011 and the respective post–eruption years, while for the 1960 eruption and following year, they largely exceeded the mean value of the residuals. The large amount of tephra deposited during the 1921–22 and 2011 eruptions caused physical damage to the tree canopy leading to the appearance of white rings and to locally absent rings. The rate of change in radial growth of trees during these eruptions presented significant declines in relation to the growth of five years before the eruption and to the following year. The low amount of tephra deposited during the 1960 eruption did not cause damage to the stands and trees increased their radial growth. In general, trees that had reduced radial growth experienced a remarkable recovery starting in the second or third post–eruption year. The amount of tephra deposited and the time of year of the volcanic eruptions had an important influence on tree rings. Some ecophysiological causes that could explain the growth responses of N. pumilio to tephra fall are discussed herein. Our study may provide useful insights to clarify the uncertain characteristics of some eruptions in the past or to detect the occurrence of large, undocumented volcanic eruptions throughout the Andes. Vitamin A (VA) deficiency (VAD) continues to be a major nutritional problem in developing countries, including Central America. In Mexico, milk is a well-accepted vehicle for the administration of micronutrients, including VA, to preschoolers. Thus, we conducted a randomized, controlled, clinical trial to investigate the efficacy of daily consumption of 250 mL of VA-fortified milk (which provided 196 retinol equivalents/d) for 3 mo on VA stores in mildly to moderately VAD (serum retinol concentration 0.35-0.7 μmol/L) preschoolers who were not enrolled in a food assistance program. Twenty-seven mildly to moderately VAD children were randomly assigned based on screening measurements to either the intervention (n = 14) or control group (n = 13) (children in the control group did not receive placebo). All children in the control group and 79% (n = 11 ) of the children in the intervention group completed the study. The total body VA (TBVA) pool size was estimated using the deuterated retinol dilution technique before and after the intervention. After 3 mo, median changes in the serum retinol concentration for the intervention and control groups were 0.13 and -0.21 μmol/L, respectively (P = 0.009). Median changes in the TBVA stores were 0.06 and 0.01 n,mol, respectively (P = 0.006) and estimated median changes in the liver VA concentration were 0.09 and 0.01 μmol/g, respectively (P = 0.002). The VA-fortified milk was well accepted among preschoolers and significantly increased TBVA stores, liver VA stores, and serum retinol concentration, indicating that it may be an effective means to ameliorate VAD in young Mexican children. Abstract: Objective: To validate the measurement of fat-free mass (FFM) with the deuterium oxide (D2O) dilution technique (2C) against the four-compartment (4C) model in Mexican children. Methods: This was designed as a cross-sectional, non-probabilistic study. Sixty subjects (30 male and 30 female) 6–14 y of age were recruited and completed the study during 5 mo. Total body water was measured using the D2O dilution technique and FFM was calculated using Fomon''s (6–10 y) and Lohman''s (11–14 y) hydration constants. Body composition using the 4C model was calculated with Lohman''s equation. Results: Group mean accuracy showed no differences in FFM determined by D2O dilution and the 4C model (1.24 kg, P > 0.4), by gender (2.1 kg, P > 0.2), or by method-by-gender interaction (P > 0.7). FFMs were 26.9 and 25.7 kg by the 4C and 2C models, respectively. The test for coincidence of slopes and intercepts between the 2C and 4C models and the line of identity were not different (P > 0.05). Precision by R 2 explained 98% of the variance (standard error of the estimate 1.2 kg). Bias for the difference in FFM was not significant (−1.27, 95% confidence interval −1.5 to −0.9) and no association between the mean of the differences and the magnitude of the measurements was found (P > 0.05). Mean bias was −1.27 kg for FFM (P > 0.05), and limits of agreement were −3.1 to 0.8 kg. Conclusion: The D2O dilution technique used with these hydration constants was accurate, precise, and free of bias in Mexican children and adolescents compared with the 4C model. Abstract: Fire plays a fundamental role in the ecology of Araucaria-Nothofagus forests. This paper highlights the utility of dendrochronological techniques in providing the historical reference conditions to guide ecological restoration. In the Araucarian region human activity has dramatically changed the fire frequency in the Araucaria-Nothofagus forest ecosystems. Although further critical evaluation is required, our preliminary data show that, compared with the Native American period (pre-1883), there was widespread burning of forests associated with the subsequent Euro-Chilean settlement phase. Vast areas of subalpine forest were deliberately burned to increase pasture for cattle ranching. This process is documented by a major increase in the frequency of fires in the forested Araucaria-Nothofagus landscape during the 20th century. Prior to the 1880s the fire regime was characterized by infrequent catastrophic fires with long intervening periods of stability. The immediate reduction of human-induced fire is necessary to move these altered forest ecosystems towards the range of natural structural conditions and reestablish the historical variability of this ecological process. A better understanding of the fire ecology seems crucial in developing strategies for the restoration and management of these fire-dependent forest ecosystems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Pima Indians in the United States and Mexico share a common genetic background but have very different lifestyles. Comparisons were made of the frequency of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease in these geographically separated but susceptible populations. Mexican Pimas had higher levels of physical activity, less obesity, and a lower prevalence of diabetes than their US Pima counterparts. Mean blood pressure rose with worsening glucose tolerance, and the prevalence of elevated urinary albumin excretion was higher in patients with diabetes than in those without, regardless of whether they lived in the United States or Mexico. These findings illustrate the importance of lifestyle in the development of diabetes and in the subsequent occurrence of diabetic kidney disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ovarian steroid hormone progesterone and its nuclear receptor, the Progesterone Receptor (PR), play an essential role in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation in the mammary gland. In addition, experimental and clinical evidence demonstrate their critical role in controlling mammary gland tumorigenesis and breast cancer development. When bound to its ligand, the main action of PR is as a transcription factor, which regulates the expression of target genes networks. PR also activates signal transduction pathways through a rapid or non-genomic mechanism in breast cancer cells, an event that is fully integrated with its genomic effects. This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of the ligand-activated PR actions that drive epithelial cell proliferation and the regulation of the stem cell population in the normal breast and in breast cancer. Abstract: Spent coffee grounds (SCG), a residue from the soluble coffee industry, was evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. Batch adsorption tests were performed at 25°C and the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, and pH were investigated. Adsorption kinetics was determined by fitting first and second-order kinetic models to the experimental data, with the second-order model providing the best description of MB adsorption onto spent coffee grounds. The typical dependence of dye uptake on kinetic studies indicated the adsorption process to be both chemisorption and diffusion controlled. The experimental adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption models. The experimental data obtained in the present study indicate that spent coffee grounds are suitable candidates for use as adsorbents in the removal of cationic dyes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract This research evaluated the formation of free radicals in the oxidative degradation of biodiesel in contact with metallic copper and metal alloys via EPR using the spin trapping PBN, identifying and quantifying the formation of free radicals in commercial biodiesel samples. The biodiesel samples were analyzed in contact with carbon steel, silver steel, metallic copper and blackberry extract. The lowest values of oxidative stability were obtained for biodiesel in contact with metallic copper, followed by carbon steel and silver steel. The highest values of radicals formed were obtained for the sample containing blackberry extract. Vector-borne diseases have increased pesticide use in urban areas (UA) and agricultural areas (AA) in Mexico. Breast milk can be contaminated by pesticide exposure. The objective of the study was to measure breast milk intake by deuterium oxide dilution as well as organochlorine and pyrethroid transfer from mother to infant in AA and UA of Sonora, Mexico. Human milk intake was determined by the ’dose-to-mother’ technique using deuterium oxide (D 2 O) dilution. Mothers’ body composition was also assessed by this technique and the intercept method. Pyrethroids (deltamethrin, cypermethrin and cyhalothrin) and organochlorine pesticide residues ( p,p’- DDT, p,p’ - DDE, p,p’- DDD) in breast milk samples were measured by gas chromatography. Sixty-two lactating women and their infants participated in the study, 32 lived in the UA and 30 lived in the AA. Breast milk intake was approximately 100 mL higher in the AA than in the UA 799 ± 193 and 707 ± 201 mL/day, respectively (p < 0.05). The concentrations of p,p’ - DDT and cypermethrin levels in breast milk were higher in the UA than in the AA (p < 0.05 and p = 0.001, respectively). None of the pyrethroids and organochlorine pesticides studied surpassed the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) in milk for humans according to EPA and FAO/WHO. In conclusion, breast milk intake was higher in the AA compared to the UA. The p,p’- DDT and cypermethrin levels in breast milk were higher in the UA compared to the AA. We investigate the behavioural responses of wild type ( WT ) and leopard ( leo ) zebrafish elicited by alarm substances of conspecifics at three contexts: during the exposure period (Experiment 1); after exposure, in habituation to novelty (Experiment 2); or after exposure, in the light–dark preference test (Experiment 3), and analyse their influence on pigment response. During the exposure, leo showed decreased vertical drifts, increased number and duration of erratic movements, while WT had increased erratic movements and latency to enter the top. In the novel tank, we observed that angular velocity decreased in WT exposed to alarm substance, which also presented increased fear responses. Contrastingly, leo increased the number of entries and time in top, indicating differences in habituation profile. Alarm substance increased the number of erratic movements in the light–dark test, but elicited different responses between strains in scototaxis, latency to enter the dark compartment and risk assessment episodes. Moreover, the body colour of zebrafish did not change after alarm substance exposure. Principal component analyses suggest that burst swimming, anxiety-like behaviours, and locomotion/exploration were the components that most accounted for total variances of Experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively. BaP1 is a P-I class snake venom metalloproteinase (SVMP) relevant in the local tissue damage associated with envenomings by Bothrops asper, a medically important snake species in Central America and parts of South and North America. The main treatment for these accidents is the passive immunotherapy using antibodies raised in horses. In order to obtain more specific and batch-to-batch consistent antivenons, recombinant antibodies are considered a good option compared to animal immunization. We constructed a recombinant single chain variable fragment (scFv) from a monoclonal antibody against BaP1 (MABaP1) formerly secreted by a hybridoma clone. This recombinant antibody was cloned into pMST3 vector in fusion with SUMO protein and contains VH and VL domains linked by a flexible (G4S)3 polypeptide (scFvBaP1). The aim of this work was to produce scFvBaP1 and to evaluate its potential concerning the neutralization of biologically important activities of BaP1. The cytoplasmic expression of this construct was successfully achieved in C43 (DE3) bacteria. Our results showed that scFvBaP1-SUMO fusion protein presented an electrophoretic band of around 43 kDa from which SUMO alone corresponded to 13.6 kDa, and only the scFv was able to recognize BaP1 as well as the whole venom by ELISA. In contrast, neither an irrelevant scFv anti-LDL nor its MoAb partner recognized it. BaP1-induced fibrinolysis was significantly neutralized by scFvBaP1, but not by SUMO, in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, scFvBaP1, as well as MaBaP1, completely neutralized in vivo hemorrhage, muscle necrosis, and inflammation induced by the toxin. Docking analyses revealed possible modes of interaction of the recombinant antibody with BaP1. Our data showed that scFv recognized BaP1 and whole B. asper venom, and neutralized biological effects of this SVMP. This scFv antibody can be used for understanding the molecular mechanisms of neutralization of SVMPs, and for exploring the potential of recombinant antibody fragments for improving the neutralization of local tissue damage in snakebite envenoming. Abstract: Intervention studies in youth with obesity that can be translated into primary care are limited. We compared a lifestyle intervention to a brief intervention applied by primary care physicians (control group) for treating pediatric obesity in the primary care setting. Seventy-six youth with obesity (body mass index [BMI] >95th percentile or >90th percentile plus waist circumference >90th percentile, aged 9 to 17 years) participated in a 12-month, randomized, controlled trial, conducted at a primary care unit in Northern México from June 2006 through October 2007. Participants randomized to lifestyle intervention attended a family-centered program consisting of 12 sessions of behavioral curriculum, dietary advice from a registered dietitian (weekly for the first 3 months and monthly thereafter), and monthly consultations with a primary care physician. Control group participants attended monthly consultations with a primary care physician who received a brief training on obesity. Forty-three (57%) participants completed the 12 months of study. After 12 months, mean changes (95% confidence interval) in body weight for the lifestyle group and the control group were −0.8 kg (−3.2, 1.5) vs +5.6 kg (3, 8.2; P<0.001) and mean changes in BMI were −1.8 (−2.6, −0.9) vs +0.4 (−0.5, 1.3; P<0.001), respectively. Intention-to-treat analysis at 12 months confirmed significant differences in primary outcomes (weight −3.5 kg, P=0.02; BMI −1.2, P=0.03) in favor of the lifestyle group. This study provides preliminary evidence that primary care physicians supported by a registered dietitian and a behavioral curriculum can be a successful strategy for treating pediatric obesity in the primary care setting. Abstract: This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence of malnutrition and several metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease in 287 apparently healthy older adults from Northwest Mexico. Also, the impact of overweight and obesity on metabolic risk factors was assessed. Nutritional status was determined using serum albumin levels and anthropometry. Vitamin status was also assessed. Metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease were evaluated. The prevalence of undernutrition was 15.3%. Also, vitamin E deficiency was common (18%). On the contrary, 44.9% of men and women were in overweight and 24% were obese. A 50.9% of the older adults had hypertension, 52.6% hypercholesterolemia (HC), 38.3% hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), 26.1% impaired fasting glucose and 26.1% impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). HC and low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly more prevalent in women than in men. Mean adjusted values of fasting glucose, high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC)/HDL-C ratio ≥5, triglycerides (TG) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were significantly higher in subjects with body mass index (BMI)≥25.0kg/m2. Undernutrition, obesity and vitamin E deficiency, as well as several metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease coexisted in this studied group. Overweight and obesity were the most prevalent findings. BMI≥25kg/m2 was the common factor explaining most of the metabolic abnormalities. Abstract: Objective: Current recommendations for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection include a proton pump inhibitor in combination with two antibiotics. We evaluated the potential activity of a probiotic food as an adjuvant to antibiotic triple therapy for eradication of H. pylori infection in children from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Methods: Sixty-five children who tested positive for H. pylori, as diagnosed by 13C-urea breath test and endoscopy, were included in this study. Patients were randomized to receive 1-wk triple therapy plus probiotic food (treated group) or milk placebo (control) that was administered for 3 mo. Probiotic food consisted of 250 mL of a commercial yogurt containing Bifidobacterium animalis and Lactobacillus casei (107 colony-forming units/mL). Post-treatment urea breath test controls were performed 1 and 3 mo after the end of triple therapy. Results: We found no significant differences in H. pylori eradication rates (ERs) at 1 and 3 mo between the treated group (ER = 45.5% and 42.4%) and the control group (ER = 37.5% and 40.6%). Relative risks between groups were 0.87 (95% confidence interval 0.58–1.32, P = 0.345) in the first month and 0.97 (95% confidence interval 0.64–1.46, P = 0.542) in the third month. Conclusions: We could not demonstrate an adjuvant effect of the studied probiotic food to triple therapy in the eradication of H. pylori infection in children in Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, we found lower ERs than those reported for the same therapeutic scheme in developed countries, indicating that bacterial resistance and alternative therapeutic strategies should be studied. • Effect on forest NDVI of recent 7 years "mega-drought" was assessed. • One-third of Mediterranean forest showed a significant NDVI decrease during drought. • Local wet conditions provide drought refuges. • Browning occurs in communities with species showing different drought resistance. • Potential resistance loss is suggested by high browning in the driest zones. Deforestation is widely studied throughout the world. However, a less evident issue is the effect of climate change and drought on remnants of native forests. The objective of this work was to understand the geographic variations in resistance to drought of the Mediterranean sclerophyllous forests of central Chile. These forests have been historically reduced and fragmented and in recent years were subjected to the most prolonged drought occurred between 2010 and 2017. Using data from the MODIS satellite sensor, temporal trends in the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) were quantified. We related these trends with different environmental variables to understand the effects of geographical variation and forest type as indicators of resistance to drought. We observed a significant direct effect of drought, attributable to the reduced precipitation in central Chile, and a significantly reduced NDVI in near one-third of the region forests (browning). However, NDVI and therefore forest productivity were more stable in some mesic sites such as ravine bottoms, but not on south-facing slopes. This suggests that under a regime of reduced precipitations, a greater available soil humidity would be a more important factor than the fact of receiving less solar radiation. Finally, the highest degree of browning was observed in semi-arid sclerophyllous forest dominated by species tolerant to drought. Our findings emphasize the need to consider topographic site conditions to adequately assess forest productivity and vulnerability where local wet conditions could provide drought refuges. This recent drought may be analogous to forecasted warmer and drier climate conditions with more frequent and severe droughts, so our results may serve as a general framework for climate-smart decisions in highly threatened forest restoration and conservation.
