Abstract The Congo River is the world's second largest river in terms of drainage area and water discharge. Monitored for decades, a large dataset is available, onshore for both the hydrology and sediment load, and offshore by many paleo-environmental proxies compiled at the Late-Quaternary time-scale. These numerous data allow for accurate calibration of numerical modeling. In this study, we aim to numerically quantify the evolution of sediment supply leaving the tropical Congo watershed during the last 155 ka and to decipher the forcing parameters that control this sediment supply over glacial/interglacial stages. For this, a modified version of the model HydroTrend, that besides morphologic, climatic, hydrologic, lithologic, land cover and anthropogenic factors now also considers sediment deposition on the floodplain, is used. In addition, a method to quantify the impact of natural vegetation changes is developed. Simulations match well the present-day observed data. They indicate that a significant portion of suspended sediments is trapped on the floodplain. Long-term simulations indicate that environmental changes between glacial and interglacial stages account for a 30% maximum variation of sediment supply. Climatic changes - precipitation and temperature, account for a maximum decrease in sediment supply of 20% during cold periods while conversely, induced land cover changes (loss of forest during colder and dryer stages) lead to enhanced sediment supply up to 30%. Over a longer period, the average sediment supply remained almost constant during glacial and interglacial periods, while peaks may have occurred during a warming period, just before forests had time to recover the catchment, i.e. during post-glacial periods. These moderate changes in sediment export, despite major changes in climate and vegetation cover, can be explained by the efficiency of sediment trapping of large tropical catchments that buffer fluvial fluxes towards the ocean. Geochemical data (total organic carbon-TOC content, δ 13 Corg, C:N, Rock-Eval analyses) were obtained on 150 core tops from the Angola basin, with a special focus on the Congo deep-sea fan. Combined with the previously published data, the resulting dataset (322 stations) shows a good spatial and bathymetric representativeness. TOC content and δ 13 Corg maps of the Angola basin were generated using this enhanced dataset. The main difference in our map with previously published ones is the high terrestrial organic matter content observed downslope along the active turbidite channel of the Congo deep-sea fan till the distal lobe complex near 5000 m of water-depth. Interpretation of downslope trends in TOC content and organic matter composition indicates that lateral particle transport by turbidity currents is the primary mechanism controlling supply and burial of organic matter in the bathypelagic depths. A joint research expedition between the French IFREMER and the German MARUM was conducted in 2011 using the R/V ‘Pourquoi pas?’ to study gas hydrate distributions in a pockmark field (1141–1199 m below sea surface) at the continental margin of Nigeria. The seafloor drill rig MeBo of MARUM was used to recover sediments as deep as 56.74 m below seafloor. The presence of gas hydrates in specific core sections was deduced from temperature anomalies recorded during continuous records of infrared thermal scanning and anomalies in pore water chloride concentrations. In situ sediment temperature measurements showed elevated geothermal gradients of up to 258 °C/km in the center of the so-called pockmark A which is up to 4.6 times higher than that in the background sediment (72 °C/km). The gas hydrate distribution and thermal regime in the pockmark are largely controlled by the intensity, periodicity and direction of fluid flow. The joint interaction between fluid flow, gas hydrate formation and dissolution, and the thermal regime governs pockmark formation and evolution on the Nigerian continental margin. The essential characteristics of the vegetation dynamics of tropical Africa remain only partially known. This study assesses the succession of vegetation-types over Central Africa during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles. Analysis of core KZai 02, which contains pollen from the Zaire River watershed (latitudes 9°N–13°S), allows the investigation of long-term patterns of plant ecosystem development and their climatic causes. Core KZai 02 (18.20 m long) was recovered from 6°24.20′S/9°54.10′E in the uppermost axial edifice of the Zaire deep sea fan. The chronology of this sedimentary archive was established using nannofossils and correlations of pollen and total organic carbon signals with the nearby core GeoB1008. The pollen record indicates that: (i) glacials (MIS 6, 4, 2) are marked by the development of afromontane ( Podocarpus ) forest at high altitudes when central basin lowlands were occupied by Cyperaceae marshes and savannah; (ii) during interglacials (MIS 1, 5) lowland forests were developed, marked by the successive expansion of pioneer, warm-temperate, rain forests, and mangrove indicating sea-level rise; (iii) glacial-interglacial transitions (MIS 6/5, 2/1) display similar vegetation dynamics. The strong evidence of afromontane forest and the opening of the vegetation during glacials suggest a reduced latitudinal distribution of rainfall by the strengthening of the trade wind system. West African monsoon systems were enhanced during interglacials, allowing the progressive development of lowland forests. The development of rain and pioneer forests during glacial Heinrich stadials suggests an enhancement of water availability in tropical Africa associated with these high-latitude events. However, no augmentation of wind activity described by previous studies is evidenced by our pollen record. Similar vegetation successions during glacial/interglacial transitions suggest the diachronous and stepped intervention of CO 2 (emphasizing the influence of temperature on plant ecosystems) and water availability. The Demerara Plateau, off the French Guiana and Surinam margin, corresponds to a prominent sub-horizontal marginal plateau. The interpretation of a large set of seismic data acquired along the Demerara Plateau and integration with previous seismic stratigraphy and drill studies enables a better understanding of the sedimentary evolution of the outer Demerara marginal plateau. Since the end of the transform activity (late Albian), three sedimentary evolutionary stages have been identified. 1) The Pre-contourite Stage (late Albian to early Miocene) is strongly controlled by the structure of the margin that influences the distribution pattern of post-transform deposits through differential thermal subsidence between transform and divergent segments. 2) The Transitional Stage (middle Miocene to early Pliocene) is expressed as a current-controlled erosive surface resulting from the onset of bottom-current interactions due to the establishment and strengthening of the modern thermohaline circulation that is coeval with the progressive closure of the Isthmus of Panama. 3) The Contourite Stage (middle Pliocene to Holocene) is characterized by the development of a contourite depositional system that is linked to the activity of the North Atlantic Deep Water circulation and by a complex interaction between alongslope and downslope processes. Our study highlights that marginal plateaus might be particularly prone to develop contourite features since they regionally influence ocean current dynamics in guiding and accelerating bottom contour currents. Marginal plateaus should thus be considered as a key target to study bottom current dynamics and paleocirculation patterns. • The post-transform sedimentation of the Demerara marginal plateau (DP) is studied. • A strong relation between topography, downslope and alongslope processes shapes DP. • Marginal plateaus are particularly prone to develop contourite deposits.
