The technology behind optical scanners has greatly improved recently, making their dental application advantageous. While their accuracy is now comparable with that of conventional impression materials, whether these techniques have other advantages is unclear. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether digital scanning for implant-supported restorations is more time-efficient and convenient for the patient. The study was conducted on September 23, 2020 using 4 different databases (Medline, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus) searching for clinical studies that compared the time needed and/or patient perceptions between those who had undergone the digital scanning procedure and those who had undergone conventional impression making. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Outcome variables were measured as standard mean differences (SMDs) by following a fixed-effects model or random-effects model (in the case of high heterogeneity). Digital scanning was more time-efficient and was preferred by patients for all 4 analyzed outcomes (comfort, anxiety, nausea, time perception). Digital scanning was found to be more time-efficient and convenient than conventional impression making for implant-supported restorations. Purpose: The extraction of a tooth is followed by hard and soft tissue changes that can compromise implant placement. The aim of the present retrospective study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of different ridge preservation procedures based on the use of leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF).Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of all patients who had undergone surgery from January 1, 2017 to January 1, 2018 for alveolar ridge preservation on single posterior teeth using 3 clinical protocols: L-PRF alone, L-PRF mixed with a bone xenograft, and bone xenograft alone. Clinical and radiographic measures were recorded preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively to determine the horizontal and vertical ridge resorption.Results: A total of 45 patients were included in the present study. All the surgeries were performed successfully, and no intraoperative complications developed. The L-PRF group experienced significantly greater horizontal and vertical bone resorption. The L-PRF plus bone xenograft group had less vertical and horizontal bone resorption than the bone xenograft alone group. Statistically significant differences in postoperative pain and wound healing were observed, with the bone xenograft alone group, in particular, having higher values for pain and experiencing delayed wound healing.Conclusions: Within the limitations of the present retrospective study, the use of a bone xenograft alone or L-PRF combined with a bone xenograft to perform alveolar ridge preservation procedures significantly limited bone resorption. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to analyze the management of single dental extractions and postoperative bleeding in patients with a diagnosis of factor V deficiency. A careful evaluation of each case will allow the team to categorize the risk and operate safely, minimizing the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications. If necessary, the oral-maxillofacial surgeon can choose to do so in collaboration with the hematologist on a case-by-case basis.Patients and Methods: The present retrospective study included 5 patients with mild congenital factor V deficiency who had undergone at least 1 dental extraction. Mouth rinse with tranexamic acid, nonresorbable sutures, and gelatin sponge packed in the alveolar socket were used to obtain hemostasis. No systemic therapies, such as fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate, or recombinant activated factor VII, were administered.Results: Twenty-five teeth were extracted. The factor V plasma levels ranged from 14.1 to 22.4%. Local antihemorrhagic treatments resulted in good hemostasis. No hemorrhagic complications or intraoperative or postoperative major bleeding was observed.Conclusions: Dental extractions appear to be safe procedures for patients with mild factor V deficiency when a bleeding risk assessment has been performed in conjunction with a hematologist and an appropriate treatment protocol is followed. Purpose: Extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (M3s) may cause temporary or permanent neurosensorial disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). Although the incidence of this complication is low, a great range of variability has been reported in the literature. Several methods to reduce or eliminate this complication have been proposed, such as orthodontic-assisted extraction, extraction of the second molar, or intentional odontoectomy. The purpose of this series of cases is to present a novel approach for a riskless extraction of impacted mandibular M3s in contact with the IAN. Materials and Methods: Nine consecutive patients (4 male and 5 female; mean age 24.9 years, range 18-43 years) required the extraction of 10 horizontally or mesioangular impacted mandibular M3s. In all cases the M3 was in contact with the IAN with a high risk of nerve injury. A staged approached was proposed and accepted by the patients. This approach consisted in the surgical removal of the mesial portion of the anatomic crown to create adequate space for mesial M3 migration. After the migration of the M3 had taken place, the extraction could then be accomplished in a second surgical session minimizing neurological risks. Results: All M3s moved mesially within 6 months (mean 174.1 days, range 92-354 days) and could be successfully removed without any neurological consequences. Conclusion: This technique may be considered as an alternative approach to the extraction of horizontally or mesioangular impacted M3s in proximity to the IAN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Zirconia (ZrO2) is a ceramic material with adequate mechanical properties for manufacturing of medical devices. Zirconia stabilized with Y2O3 has the best properties for these applications. When a stress occurs on a ZrO2 surface, a crystalline modification opposes the propagation of cracks. Compression resistance of ZrO2 is about 2000MPa. Orthopedic research led to this material being proposed for the manufacture of hip head prostheses. Prior to this, zirconia biocompatibility had been studied in vivo; no adverse responses were reported following the insertion of ZrO2 samples into bone or muscle. In vitro experimentation showed absence of mutations and good viability of cells cultured on this material. Zirconia cores for fixed partial dentures (FPD) on anterior and posterior teeth and on implants are now available. Clinical evaluation of abutments and periodontal tissue must be performed prior to their use. Zirconia opacity is very useful in adverse clinical situations, for example, for masking of dischromic abutment teeth. Radiopacity can aid evaluation during radiographic controls. Zirconia frameworks are realized by using computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. Cementation of Zr-ceramic restorations can be performed with adhesive luting. Mechanical properties of zirconium oxide FPDs have proved superior to those of other metal-free restorations. Clinical evaluations, which have been ongoing for 3 years, indicate a good success rate for zirconia FPDs. Zirconia implant abutments can also be used to improve the aesthetic outcome of implant-supported rehabilitations. Newly proposed zirconia implants seem to have good biological and mechanical properties; further studies are needed to validate their application. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The internal derangements are the most common noninflammatory abnormalities of the disc, observed even in asymptomatic subjects. Because the temporomandibular joint shows large adaptative and compensatory mechanisms over dysfunctional disc motion, these disorders may be asymptomatic or minimally evident for a long time. A careful clinical evaluation, reinforced by imaging findings, should help differentiate asymptomatic derangements from painful conditions that may require treatment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
