- Abstract
Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity to detect signals routinely. In this paper we describe the data recorded by these instruments during their first and second observing runs. The main data products are gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. The datasets that include this strain measurement can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at http://gw-openscience.org, together with data-quality information essential for the analysis of LIGO and Virgo data, documentation, tutorials, and supporting software.

- Abstract
Following a successful period of data-taking between 2006 and 2011, the Virgo gravitational-wave detector was taken offline for a major upgrade. The changes made to the instrument significantly increased the complexity of the control systems and meant that an extended period of commissioning was required to reach a sensitivity appropriate for science data-taking. This commissioning period was completed in July of 2017 and the second-generation Advanced Virgo detector went on to join the Advanced LIGO detectors in the O2 science run in August of the same year. The upgraded detector was approximately twice as sensitive to binary neutron star mergers as the first-generation instrument. During the August 2017 science run, Advanced Virgo detected its first gravitational wave signal, with the binary black hole merger, GW170729. This paper describes the control of the longitudinal degrees of freedom in the Advanced Virgo instrument during the O2 science run and the process that brought the detector from an uncontrolled, non-resonant state to its target working point.

We have analysed a sample of nine expertises, using the methodology proposed by Roland Barthes in his book S/Z, in which he applies it to Honore de Balzac's 'Sarrasine'. Barthes suggests that every narrative is characterized by the presence of five codes (hermeneutical, proairetic, semantic, symbolic and referential): we have searched for them in the expertises, but we have also observed the presence of many lapsus calami. As for our results, we have interpreted the massive presence of symbolic code in an expertise as a proof of the elaboration of the horror elicited by crime in the expert's narrative and, on the other side, the presence of referential code as the proof of the incapacity to treat such feeling and the necessity to defend himself from it. In this vision, lapsuses arise when the expert is astonished by the horror of the crime, and does not succeed in elaborating it either by using symbolic code or through his cultural resources (referential code). Finally, some reflections are made upon the difficulty for the voice of the defendant to be heard in the texts written about him. In recent years experimental investigations have demonstrated that the risk of spalling for a concrete material under fire conditions is drastically reduced by using a low dosage of polypropylene fibres in the mix design. This effect can be explained by considering the increase in voids connectivity within the cement paste and in concrete porosity due to polypropylene evaporation above certain temperatures. In this work the complex mechanism of polypropylene contribution on concrete behaviour under thermal conditions has been numerically evaluated through a coupled hygro-thermal–mechanical finite element formulation. Abstract: A new approach for modelling concrete spalling process is here proposed, taking into account a fully nonlinear-displacement/strain theory able to catch complex interactions between pressure, thermal and mechanical fields. The micro-structural modelling of concrete under fire conditions is derived from a mechanical and thermodynamic consistent theory and it is strictly related to a self-consistent, carefully extracted set of experimental data, in order to make a correct validation and calibration of the numerical F.E. procedures and codes. Even if appearing as a first but successful example, it is shown that a procedure accounting for coupled material and geometric nonlinearities is able to attain valuable and realistic numerical results concerning spalling process in concrete. 37. Oral mucosal lesions in children from 0 to 12 years old: ten years' experience.

Objective: The exact prevalence of oral lesions in childhood is not well known. We sought to define the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in a large group of children. Study design: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using clinical charts from January 1997 to December 2007. Data collected included age, gender, and pathologic diagnosis. Results: In total, 10,128 children (0-12 years old) were enrolled. Clinical diagnostic criteria proposed by the World Health Organization were followed. The frequency of children presenting oral mucosal lesions was 28.9%, and no differences related to gender were observed. The most frequent lesions recorded were oral candidiasis (28.4%), geographic tongue and other tongue lesions (18.5%), traumatic lesions (17.8%), recurrent aphthous ulcerations (14.8%), herpes simplex virus type 1 infections (9.3%), and erythema multiforme (0.9%). Children suffering from chronic diseases had a higher frequency of oral lesions compared with healthy children (chi-square: P < .01). Conclusion: Mucosal alterations in children are relatively common, and several oral disorders are associated with underlying medical conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Predicting plastic deformation and localization band around a wellbore drilled through a porous rock is a challenging task that could have important implications for the prediction of instability and sand production. This study focuses on analyzing stress field, plastic zones, and localized deformations around a horizontal borehole drilled at a great depth through a highly porous rock formation. Several laboratory studies demonstrate that, depending on the loading path, highly porous rocks are susceptible to different failure mechanisms, but most of these mechanisms are mainly due to shear-induced dilation and shear-enhanced compaction. Plasticity models, in conjunction with bifurcation analysis, represent an extremely useful framework for describing such detailed constitutive responses. This paper presents a new elastoplastic constitutive model characterized by two yield surfaces intersecting smoothly, that is able to capture the different failure modes. The model is validated against experimental data for several different porous rocks, and it is then used to determine the stress and strain distributions around a horizontal wellbore using nonlinear finite element analysis. Particular interest is devoted to predicting the condition for the formation of a localized band of intense deformation, elucidating the factors that either prevent or enhance the band initiation. Results of simulations show the key role played by the elastoplastic constitutive model and the effects of the mud pressure, the in-situ stress condition and geometric imperfections in the development and propagation of plastic zone, as well as in the initiation of localization zone. - Abstract
An efficient method to address the three-dimensional modeling of the visco-elasto-plastic material behavior, specifically of bituminous conglomerates used in asphalt concrete production, is proposed. The method resorts to one of the most recent formulations for asphalt creep modeling, represented by the modified Huet-Sayegh fractional rheological model. The Grünwald-Letnikov representation of the fractional operator is adopted to treat the operator numerically in an efficient manner. Further, a coupling scheme between the creep model and elasto-plasticity is proposed by adopting the additive decomposition of the total strain tensor. This enables the numerical assessment of the mechanical behavior for bituminous materials under short- to long-term loading. In this context, both constant strain rate tests, and creep recovery tests are numerically simulated. There is a growing interest in the application of UHP FRC (Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete) which has been under vigorous development since its inception over two decades ago. The advantages of these advanced materials is that they overcome the problems that plague conventional concrete, these include among others low residual strength and low tensile strength, poor crack control and resistance to crack propagation, which leads corrosion of the rebars and spalling. The aim of this paper is to provide a granular micromechanics-based model to describe the deformation behavior of UHP FRC material as it gives a robust method to link the micro-scale mechanisms with the macro-scale performance of materials with granular textures. In this model, the micro-scale is described by damage-elasto-plastic spring elements that represent the effective grain pair interactions decomposed into the so-called normal and tangential directions. Since the grain-pairs are variously oriented, the macro-scale response is obtained by integrating these interactions over the orientational space. Here we specialize the granular micromechanic model for UHP FRC by introducing a novel expression for the parameterized dissipation energy at the micro or the grain-pair scale. The newly introduced constitutive parameters are identified using experimental results for uniaxial extension and compression tests. The model is then applied to simulate the case of homogeneous compression, extension and shear to show the directional evolution of damage and plasticity and the consequent emergent anisotropy. • A granular micromechanics-based model for the deformation of UHP FRC is presented. • Macro-scale response is obtained by integration over the grain-pair orientations. • The new parameters are identified using tension/compression experimental tests • Numeral simulations are given for tension, compression and shear with unloading. • We show that directionally dependent damage and plasticity induces anisotropy. Abstract: In recent years FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) technology has been developed to repair damaged concrete structures. This work proposes to investigate the complex mechanism of stress–strain evolution at the FRP interface until complete debonding as well as when long-term loads are accounted for. The study has been performed by means of a fully three-dimensional approach within the context of damage mechanics, to appropriately catch transverse effects and normal stresses, developing a realistic and comprehensive study of the delamination process. The adhesion properties have been reconstructed through a contact model incorporating an elastic-damaged constitutive law, relating inter-laminar stresses acting in the sliding direction. A F.E. research code (FRPCON3D) has been developed, including a numerical procedure accounting for Mazars’ damage law inside the contact algorithm. The code is also able to describe the delamination process when considering the effects from different concrete surface preparations. Additionally, it has been upgraded to describe the long-term behaviour of composite structures by means of two visco-elastic formulations: (i) Bažant’s B3 law has been considered for the concrete component, where creep effect is composed by three different terms, i.e. the elastic part, basic creep and drying creep; (ii) for FRP’s fibres and matrix a micromechanical approach has been implemented.
