Wray (a) Keywords: Risky sex; Alcohol; Marijuana; Impulsivity; Affect Abstract: Use of alcohol and marijuana among college students is common and use of these substances may increase the likelihood of risky sexual behavior. The present study found significant associations between risky sexual behavior and both mean BAC per drinking day and marijuana use intensity. However, hypothesized interactions between marijuana use and BAC were not supported. In addition, positive and negative urgency and premeditation were each significantly associated with the likelihood of risky sex. Substance use and facets of impulsivity and self-control exhibited direct associations with risky sexual behavior but hypothesized moderation effects were not supported. Associations between urgency and risky sexual behavior varied as a function of gender and trait positive affect. This laboratory analogue experiment tested a disinhibition versus alcohol myopia explanation of alcohol's role by investigating effects of acute alcohol administration, expectations and individual differences drawn from Malamuth's Confluence Model of Sexual Aggression (i.e., Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence: AIV, Need for Sexual Dominance: NSD) on young men's acceptance of sexual aggression. Young adult heterosexual men (n =334) attended two laboratory sessions each. In the first, they completed screening and individual differences measures. In the second, they were assigned randomly to consume one of four beverages: Control, Placebo, Low Dose Alcohol (0.33 ml alcohol/kg body weight) or Moderate Dose Alcohol (0.75 ml/kg) and view one of two video-delivered scenario conditions: 'Anti-Force Cues' (scenario of a couple on a date with embedded explicit cues mitigating against forced sex) or 'No Cues' (Identical scenario with no Anti-Force cues). Participants then judged 1) should the man continue to force the woman to have sex? 2) would they force the woman? and 3) who was responsible for the outcome? Results supported a disinhibition versus alcohol myopia model. Consuming alcohol increased acceptance of sexual aggression. Further, higher NSD and AIV scores were associated with acceptance of forced sex, but only after alcohol consumption. Overall, findings showed that key individual difference factors from Malamuth's Confluence Model enhance precision of predicting sexual aggression risk by young men under the influence of alcohol. Connors (c) Keywords: Alcohol; Treatment; Clinical course; Structural model Abstract: Research on alcohol treatment outcomes has the potential to advance knowledge about how treatment combines with other variables to influence post treatment course of functioning. The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend [Connors, G. J., Maisto, S. A., & Zywiak, W. H. (1996). Understanding relapse in the broader context of post-treatment functioning. Addiction, 91 (Suppl.), S173-S189] test of a multivariate model of course by testing the model's fit to data from a larger sample and the use of stronger statistical methods. The participants were 400 men and women presenting for alcohol treatment in two cities in the US. These individuals completed a pretreatment (baseline) assessment battery at treatment initiation and then completed follow-up assessments bimonthly for a period of 1 year. The model included pretreatment, treatment (months 1-6), and post-baseline (months 1-6) factors to predict alcohol use (percent days abstinent, drinks/drinking day, and total number drinks/month, all for months 7-12). The application of structural equation modeling methods revealed that the model fit the data adequately for all three dependent variables, with the major significant findings of direct effects of treatment setting, coping skills, and the mediation of treatment effects through coping skills. Overall, the data replicated several findings from the Connors et al.'s study and point to the importance of investigating the mechanisms underlying treatment effects and the mediation of treatment effects by coping skills in future research. Studies are conducted on heterogeneity in treated adolescents' patterns of alcohol use and symptoms over a one- year follow up. Alcohol use trajectories and alcohol symptom trajectories are identified and studied and the most frequent joint outcome of alcohol use and symptom trajectory is identified.

A community sample of adolescents and those with alcohol use disorders (AUD) from drug and alcohol are studied to identify adolescents with inadequate supervision and the effects on AUD development and treatment outcome. Results indicate that community adolescents with inadequate supervision are significantly more likely to drink alcohol, are more likely to have AUDs at the initial assessment and those without AUDs are more likely to develop AUDs in the follow-up period.

It has not been possible to prove the hypothesis that higher magnitude and increased salience of self-discrepancies would lead to greater alcohol consumption during a wine tasting test. Low-salience participants were found to indicate an equivalent degree of post-salience task discrepancy awareness as high-salience participants. This indicates that the distraction task, performance-related self-discrepancies could have become activated among the quite competitive university students who represented the majority of participants. The failure to identify a main effect of discrepancy magnitude on wine consumption could have been partly attributable to sample characteristics.
