Housing status impacts outcomes after elective and emergent operations but has not been well studied in the emergency general surgery population. This study investigates the impact of housing status on complications and 30-day follow-up, emergency department visits, and readmissions after emergency general surgery admission. We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study of adult patients admitted with an emergency general surgery diagnosis at an urban, safety net hospital from 2014 to 2021. Patients were matched 1 to 2 on the basis of age, sex, Charlson Comorbidity Index, diagnosis, and operative status. The primary exposure was unhoused status. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes included intensive care unit admission, extended length of stay, follow-up attendance, and emergency department visit or unplanned readmission within 30 days. Multivariable conditional logistic regression was used to determine the association between housing status and the outcomes of interest. The study included 531 patients (177 unhoused, 354 housed). There were no significant differences in complications, intensive care unit admissions, or extended length of stay. Unhoused patients had lower odds of outpatient follow-up (odds ratio, 0.54; 95% confidence interval, 0.35–0.85, P =.008) and higher odds of emergency department utilization (odds ratio, 2.72; 95% confidence interval, 1.78–4.14, P <.001) and readmission (odds ratio, 1.87; 95% confidence interval, 1.09–3.19, P =.02). Compared with housed patients, unhoused patients with emergency general surgery conditions have lower rates of outpatient follow-up and greater odds of using the emergency department and being readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Background: Few data are available on the temporal patterns of health resource utilization (HRU) and expenditures around paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) diagnosis. This study assessed the longitudinal trends in HRU and expenditures in the 3 years preceding and subsequent to PSVT diagnosis.Methods: Adult patients (age 18-65 years) with newly diagnosed PSVT were identified using administrative claims from the IBM MarketScan Research Database between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2016 and propensity-score matched (1:1) with non-PSVT controls.Results: Among the 12,305 PSVT patients compared with matched controls, PSVT was associated with statistically significant higher annual rates of emergency department visits, physician office visits, inpatient hospitalizations, and diagnostic testing. HRU increased in the years preceding PSVT diagnosis, reaching its peak in the year following PSVT diagnosis. Over the 6-year follow-up period, PSVT was associated with higher mean annual per patient expenditures ($12,665) compared to matched controls ($6,004; P < .001). Upon diagnosis of PSVT, the mean expenditures per PSVT patient doubled from $11,714 in the year immediately preceding index diagnosis to $23,335 in the first postdiagnosis year. Inpatient services, diagnostic testing, and ablation procedures were the principle drivers of higher mean expenditures in the first year post-PSVT diagnosis versus the year prior to PSVT diagnosis.Conclusions: PSVT presents a substantial economic burden to health care systems. The annual expenditure per PSVT patient is within the range previously reported for atrial fibrillation. The increased HRU and expenditures in the year following diagnosis, which do not return to baseline, suggest a potential gap in non-interventional, long-term PSVT management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dairy cow mortality has been steadily increasing during the last 2 decades in Denmark. This study aims to verify whether genetic mechanisms might be contributing to this increase. To do so, the records of 880,480 Holstein, 142,306 Jersey, and 85,206 Red Danish dairy cows calving from 1990 to 2006 were retrieved from the Danish Cattle register. Two causes of culling of cows were considered: death and slaughtering. Bivariate competing risk genetic models with a sire model structure were used to describe the death and the slaughtering rates simultaneously. The models included 2 random components: a sire random component with pedigree representing the sire genetic effects and a herd-year-season component. Moreover, the level of heterozygosity and the sire breed proportions were included in the models as covariates to account for potential nonadditive genetic effects due to the massive introduction of genetic material from other populations. The correlations between the sire components for death rate and slaughter rate were negative and small for the 3 populations, suggesting the existence of specific genetic mechanisms for each culling reason and common concurrent genetic mechanisms. In the Holstein population, the effects of the changes in the level of heterozygosity, breed composition, and the increasing genetic trend acted in the same direction, increasing the death rate in recent years. In the Jersey population, the effects of the level of heterozygosity and the breed proportion were small, and only the increasing genetic trend can be pointed as a genetic cause to the observed increase in the mortality rate. In the Red Danish population, neither the time-development pattern of the genetic trend nor the changes in the level of heterozygosity and breed composition could be causing the observed increase in the mortality; thus, nongenetic factors must be causing this negative development. The COVID-19 pandemic raised questions and concerns about the possibility of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via foods. While cases of COVID were rapidly rising, information related to the virus and ways of prevention was also increasing, with much of this information being provided by the media and the general population. In this context, this study had two main objectives: 1) To understand the doubts and concerns of the Portuguese population related to food safety during the first wave of COVID-19 and how they clarified these issues and 2) to analyze the population's opinion on myths and truths related to the transmission of the infection. A survey including questions about a) concerns and information on food safety during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic; b) myths and truths about COVID-1 and c) respondents' profile. The survey was released online between June and October of 2020. The main doubt of the respondents was related to the manipulation of food (40,7%) followed by the possibility of transmission of COVID-19 through food (12,6%) and which foods should be avoided due to the pandemic (12,6%). 33,3% of the participants stated that television was the main mean of information accessed to clarify these doubts, followed by a Guideline launched by the Directorate-General of Health (31,8%). However, 50,3% said that they had only found answers to some of their questions. 50% of the respondents with higher level of education and 30% of the respondents with lower level of education had doubts about the possibility of the transmission of COVID-19 through food. Also, most of the survey participants disagreed with the affirmations regarding popular ways of disinfecting food to prevent infection. COVID-19 pandemic raised several doubts, however when related to food safety, the main doubt was about the manipulation of food due to the concern of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Abstract: Scan behavior in 10 captive predator-naive adult black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) was investigated prior, during and following brief predator encounters (taxidermized oncilla cat —Leopardus tigrinus) versus neutral stimulus exposures (stuffed toy). For each stimulus, three 9min home-cage trials were conducted ≥72h apart. Each trial was divided into three consecutive 3min intervals: pre-exposure baseline observation, stimulus exposure, and post-exposure observation period. Post-exposure scan duration increased during the first two predator confrontations, while scan frequency increased significantly only after the first. Scan behavior remained constant within the last predator encounter, as it also did within and between the three neutral stimulus exposures. Although marmosets scanned more often and significantly longer after encountering the predator than the neutral stimulus, this response rapidly habituated by the second trial. Therefore, black tufted-ear marmosets in a familiar environment rapidly habituate to brief repeated predator encounters, possibly minimizing anti-predation costs once the degree of a potential threat has been adequately assessed. The Egina Field, situated in the deep-water region of the eastern Niger Delta, is characterized by a NE-SW trending anticline that contains several Middle to Upper Miocene stacked reservoirs. Notably, one of the reservoirs in the field includes three sandy intervals, which have been identified as deep marine turbidite systems. The lowest level (Interval 1) comprises a lobe complex, while the uppermost Intervals 2 and 3 consist of erosive channel complexes. These three reservoir intervals exhibit both static and partial dynamic communication. The Egina Field is affected by a coherent network of extensional and oblique-slip faults, with current activity confined to the eastern sector of the structure. Large displacement faults (throw >30m) offset individual reservoir intervals, creating lateral disconnection and acting as barriers to fluid flow across faults. Minor NNE-SSW oriented faults can locally baffle the flow of fluids, as evidenced by well tests and 4D seismic data. Nonetheless, well interference tests suggest good communication within the reservoir. Vertical communication between the stacked sand bodies is facilitated through erosional contacts between reservoir intervals, while lateral communication occurs around segmented faults, via relay ramps and fault tips, in a NE-SW direction. Across the field, ten oil-water contacts have been identified, with a general trend of deepening towards the south. This pattern has been interpreted as a tilted contact caused by an active hydrodynamic regime, where aquifer overpressures gradually decrease from north to south (31 m of difference), aligning with the regional trend. This paper describes how the geological (structural and sedimentological) heterogeneities are paramount in deep-water turbiditic reservoirs, for both static and dynamic conditions. Considering that Val may potentially be a limiting amino acid for laying hens, an experiment was carried out to determine the ideal digestible Val-to-Lys ratio in the diets of 42- to 54-wk-old brown layers. Literature reports are divergent, with ratios varying between 86 and 102%, which suggests that further research is needed. Five different digestible Val-to-Lys ratios were evaluated: 84 (0.555% digestible Val), 88, 92, 96, and 100%. Feed intake (g/hen per day), egg production (%), egg weight (g), egg mass (g), FCR (kg/dozen and g/g), egg quality (yolk, eggshell, and albumen %), and egg weight (g) were evaluated. Egg weight, egg internal quality, and weight gain were not influenced by the different dietary digestible Val-to-Lys ratios. The evaluated ratios linearly affected feed intake and had a quadratic effect on egg production, egg mass, and FCR (kg/dozen and g/g). Based on the evaluated parameters, the ideal digestible Val-to-Lys ratio is 92%, corresponding to 0.607% digestible Val or 567 mg/hen per day of digestible Val. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation on the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in eggs from chickens raised in backyards in Portugal and Romania. A lack of compliance with safety practices by chicken owners, was demonstrated, especially in Portugal, as 96% of the eggs were visibly dirty and 92.5% were stored at room temperature. In Romania the 202 analysed eggs were Salmonella free, whereas in Portugal six of the 200 eggs sampled were positive for Salmonella spp. (3%). A positive egg for Salmonella spp. was found in 10.7% of the 56 backyard flocks sampled in Portugal. One egg exhibited contamination both in the shell-membrane mixture and in its content, while in the remaining eggs, the pathogen was found either in the shell-membrane (n = 2) or in the yolk and white mixture (n = 3). The serotypes S. Typhimurium (with identical PFGE patterns) and S. Enteritidis were isolated from five eggs and one egg, respectively. Whilst S. Enteritidis was sensitive to the 14 antibiotics tested, S. Typhimurium isolates presented divergent antimicrobial resistant phenotypes and three were classified as multi-drug resistant. • In Portugal six of the 200 eggs were positive for Salmonella spp. (3%). • 10% of backyards sampled with an egg positive for Salmonella spp. • Contamination in shell (n = 2), in eggs content (n = 3), or both (n = 1). • One isolate identified as S.
