The migration of Ursus ingressus from Southern to Western Europe, where it replaced native forms of Ursus spelaeus , is well documented. However, its occurrence in Central and Eastern European countries is unexplored. We have characterized the cave bear population inhabiting the Sudetes Mountains during the Late Pleistocene. DNA analyses were performed on 39 cave bear specimens from the Niedzwiedzia Cave. Ten successfully yielded the 254-bp sequences of an mtDNA control region. Phylogenetic analyses allowed assignment of nine samples to the U. ingressus haplogroup and one to brown bear ( Ursus arctos ). The mtDNA haplotypes of U. ingressus formed a single cluster and differed from haplotypes obtained for cave bears from other excavation sites in Europe. Uranium-thorium and radiocarbon dating of selected samples has shown that U. ingressus appeared in the Sudetes region at least 80,000 years ago. This finding may suggest that the appearance of U. ingressus in this area resulted from migration that occurred earlier than the colonization of the Alps and Swabian Jura. The family Rhinocerotidae is a key component of the Cenozoic European fauna. It reached its peak diversity during Miocene and began to decline in the Pliocene; the last representatives became extinct in Europe during the Quaternary. The present state-of-the-art review takes stock of the knowledge accumulated on Central and Eastern European Pleistocene rhinos to date. Eight species were present in Central and Eastern Europe in the Quaternary; five belonged to the genus Stephanorhinus (S. etruscus , S. jeanvireti , S. hundsheimensis , S. hemitoechus , and S. kirchbergensis), one was the woolly rhino Coelodonta antiquitatis , and two species were members of the genus Elasmotherium (E. peii and E. caucasicum). This review also offered the opportunity to critically reconsider some aspects of the systematics and stratigraphic location of the finds. Coelodonta antiquitatis is shown to have still been present as late as the Interplenivistulian and the Last Glacial Maximum; radiocarbon dating of its latest remains provided the timing of the final disappearance of the woolly rhino from the studied region. The Late Pleistocene distribution of Coelodonta antiquitatis in Central and Eastern Europe was found to largely overlap that of the woolly mammoth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Endosymbiotic relationships are common across the tree of life and have had profound impacts on cellular evolution and diversity. Recent molecular investigations of the amoeba Paulinella chromatophora have raised a timely and important question: should obligatory intracellular cyanobacteria in Paulinella be considered new organelles, or do plastids and mitochondria hold a unique stature in the history of endosymbiotic events? We argue that drawing a sharp distinction between these two organelles and all other endosymbionts is not supported by accumulating data, neither is it a productive framework for investigating organelle evolution. Brown bear Ursus arctos is a permanent member of European Middle and Late Pleistocene carnivore assemblages, which shows great body size fluctuation over time. To study this subject we carried out extensive comparison of 37 cranial metric features based on 2954 measurements coming from 263 specimens. In the statistical analyses we included a new complete brown bear calvarium which was found in Bukovynka Cave in Ukraine and dated to postglacial period. The cranial material was divided into male and female sets and classified according to geographic and stratigraphic affiliation of the samples. Analyses revealed clear decrease in many skull dimensions from the Middle Pleistocene specimens through the Late Pleistocene and postglacial to the Holocene skulls. The trend is probably related with general climatic changes during this period. However, Late Pleistocene specimens from Iberian Peninsula were significantly smaller from other Late Pleistocene European skulls or even a bit younger from the Late Glacial and postglacial period for some dimensions. The deviation from the global trend could result from their isolation from other European populations. These conclusions can be drawn both for male and female skulls. The decrease in body size showed that U. arctos is dynamically evolving species. Thus, the size does not seem to be a perfect criterion in determining the biochronological age of the brown bear findings although a general decreasing trend in size with time is clearly visible. The size of brown bear is under the influence of many factors such as great sexual dimorphism, individual and population variability as well as global and local climatic conditions. Abstract: The Emine-Bair-Khosar Cave (EBK), situated on the northern edge of the Lower Plateau of the Chatyrdag Massif (Crimean Mountains) is rich in palaeontological material accumulated over most of the Pleistocene. mtDNA was isolated from bones of three specimens of red deer (Cervus elaphus) dated to the late Pleistocene (MIS 3). These are the first ancient DNA sequences obtained for this species. The position of the three red deer individuals on the phylogeographic tree is based on mtDNA sequences of contemporary representatives of the Cervinae inhabiting the Northern Hemisphere. The results confirm the notion that the Crimean Peninsula was the north-easternmost refugium in Europe, and that during and after the Late Pleistocene it played a major role in recolonisation and dispersal of temperate species in the whole Eurasian continent. This work summarises the state of the art of the studies on the fossil cervids of Poland, from the Miocene through to the present, with an extensive reference to the faunas of the rest of Eurasia and the World. It deals with more than 5500 remains of 16 species from 68 localities. The study intends to give an overview on the taxa present in Poland. The primary focus is on the evolution and stages of dispersal of Cervidae in the frame of the environmental changes that took place across Central Europe. The authors propose to place the bioevents of cervids in the Western European Plio-Pleistocene mammalian biochronological framework, which includes the Ruscinian, Villafranchian, Galerian and Aurelian Mammal Ages. Trochulus hispidus and T. sericeus are hairy snails widely distributed in Europe. They differ in shell morphology and are usually found in various land habitats. However, their morphology does not match genetic distance as they do not form distinct clades. Therefore, it is interesting to determine to what extent environmental factors can control their phenotypes. We analysed the morphological traits and many environmental features of their habitats to find relationships between these parameters and explain ecological reasons for this plasticity. We found many statistically significant correlations between morphological traits and environmental variables. Illumination, forestation, precipitation and temperature occurred the most important features discriminating habitats of these snails. It turned out that T. sericeus prefers forests and moist shaded places, while T. hispidus chooses more dry habitats and open areas exposed to the sun. T. sericeus is also probably more tolerant to low and variable temperatures. The hair durability is also correlated with their habitats: the shell of T. hispidus is mostly hairless but hairs almost always cover the shell of T. sericeus . These results support the hypothesis that the lack of hairs is associated with the loss of a potential adaptive function due to the change from wet to dry habitats. The hairs facilitate the adherence of snails to herbaceous plants during feeding when the humidity levels are high. The morphological divergence of T. hispidus and T. sericeus is the result of phenotypic plasticity and selection associated with the habitat, which affect both the shell shape and the hair durability. Since T. hispidus and T. sericeus do to not represent separate biological species and their variability has no genetic basis, they should be considered as ecophenotypes. During the Pleistocene, the saiga antelope, a nomadic, non-territorial, herding species, inhabited vast areas of Eurasia and North America; its distribution was at its maximum extent in the last glaciation. Now, it is restricted to a few isolated populations in Central Asia. Two main forms of saiga were recognised: Saiga borealis and S. tatarica . The former became extinct at the beginning of Holocene, the latter has survived since the Pleistocene to the present. They are regarded either as two species or as two subspecies of S . tatarica . Our comparison of skull and horn measurements of many Eurasian specimens, including literature data, revealed significant differences between these taxa. S . borealis was larger than S . tatarica in terms of some cranial measurements, whereas S . tatarica was characterised by a greater diameter of horncore base. However, the distinction involved only a few metric features and the ranges of all the analysed measurements overlapped at least partially, indicating that the two taxa may not be true species. Our analyses also showed that the skull of S . tatarica had become smaller since the Pleistocene in terms of several measurements, which was probably associated with the climate and palaeogeographical changes at the end of the last glaciation and a decrease in the population size. We found significant differences between the various geographical subgroups of S . borealis and S . tatarica only in some measurements. The observed dissimilarities between S . borealis and S . tatarica correspond most probably to subspecies level and may have resulted from a biogeographical differentiation of the saiga populations in the Pleistocene. The Pleistocene lion Panthera spelaea was not a homogenous taxon; it was represented by three chronoforms. The oldest one, from the Early and Middle Pleistocene, was P. s. fossilis , the youngest was the Late Pleistocene cave lion P. s. spelaea. The intermediate form between them was P. s. intermedia. The scarcity of stratigraphically old lion made it difficult to understand the evolution of this carnivore. Therefore, we revised the fossil material of the Pleistocene lion from Polish excavation sites. The analysis revealed the presence of P. s. fossilis in 7 sites: Tunel Wielki, Południowa, Wschodnia, Draby, Biśnik, Deszczowa and Wierzchowska Górna caves. The remains from these localities significantly differed in their average size and teeth proportions from the nominate younger chronoform, i.e. the cave lion. Using this material and all other available data, we compared the lion remains grouped into four palaeoclimate periods: MIS 17-12, MIS 11-9, MIS 8-6 and MIS 5-2. We found significant time-related trends in many morphometric features of dentition and limb bones. Between the first two periods, the lion became larger but from MIS 8, it gradually decreased in size. The teeth showed a much greater rate of changes than the metapodial bones, which in turn were characterised by more heterogeneous and mosaic evolution. The changes observed in the fossil material can result from in situ evolution of lion populations occupying Europe or immigration and replacement of the native forms by those from other regions, for example Asia. • P. s. fossilis differs from P. s. spelaea in larger size and teeth proportions. • Remains of P. s. fossilis are known in Poland from Tunel Wielki, Południowa, Draby, Biśnik and Wierzchowska Góra caves. • Dental features occurred more diagnostic and demonstrated more significant differences than the tarsal and metapodial bones. • The largest fraction of statistically discriminative traits had canine, P4, p4 and interestingly metatarsus V. • Generally, most measurements decreased over time, which indicates that the lion became smaller. • The limb bones usually increased in size and thickness, which could be relate to the better adaptation to confrontation with large preys.
