34. Thermal environmental and energy effects of vertical greening system under the influence of localized urban climates.

Abstract

Vertical greening system (VGS) can cool adjacent urban space and lower building conditioning energy use without consuming valuable land area, however the influence of local microclimate on the effects is understudied. To better understand how VGS behaves environmentally in localized urban climates, the study investigated the outdoor cooling and building energy-saving potential of a VGS in five local climate zones (LCZ) in Shanghai, using integrated modeling with ENVI-met and EnergyPlus. The model verification reasonably reflects the relative differences in thermal effects of VGS due to local climates. The result reveals that, under the maximum inter-LCZ differences in air temperature (Ta) and relative humidity (RH) of 1.4 °C and 5.3 %, the greatest inter-LCZ variations in cooling and humidifying effects of the VGS are 0.16 °C and 1.1 %, respectively. The VGS creates greater adjacent Ta reduction in higher-ranked LCZs, by up to 0.27 °C, but increases RH by 1.6 %. In summer, the VGS provides energy savings of 132–278 Wh/m2 with energy saving rates of 5.7–11.7 %. The annual energy savings are partially offset by the increase in winter heating, and the annual energy saving rates are reduced to 3.2–6.3 %. Of the savings, 92 % is due to shading, 8 % to cooling, and the humidifying effect has a negative impact (- 11 %). The findings underscore the impact of localized urban climates on the VGS thermal and energy performances, and support climate-responsive and performance-optimized urban VGS planning and application. • The cooling and humidifying effects of VGS showed decreased gradient LCZ-wise. • The cooling effect of VGS reduced local UHI by an average of 17 % during the daytime. • Shading offered by plants and substrates was the primary contributor for energy savings. • Installing VGS in old buildings could provide an additional energy saving rate of 4.7 %. • The "green façade" of ENVI met module improved the accuracy by ∼ 23.5 %. Abstract

Enteroviruses (EV), the major pathogens of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina, affect millions of children each year. Most human enteroviruses cause self-limited infections except polioviruses, enterovirus A71 (EV-A71), enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), and several echoviruses (Echo) and coxsackieviruses (CV). Especially, EV-A71 has repeatedly caused large-scale outbreaks in the Asia-Pacific region since 1997. Some Asian countries have experienced cyclical outbreaks of severe EV-A71 infections and initiated development of EV-A71 vaccines. Five EV-A71 vaccine candidates have been clinically evaluated and three of them were approved for marketing in China. However, none of the China-approved products seek marketing approval in other countries. This situation supports a role for collaboration among Asian countries to facilitate clinical trials and licensure of EV-A71 vaccines. Additionally, enterovirus D68 outbreaks have been reported in the US and Taiwan currently and caused severe complications and deaths. Hence, an Asia-Pacific Network for Enterovirus Surveillance (APNES) has been established to estimate disease burden, understand virus evolution, and facilitate vaccine development through harmonizing laboratory diagnosis and data collection. Founded in 2017, the APNES is comprised of internationally recognized experts in the field of enterovirus in Asian countries working to raise awareness of this potentially fatal and debilitating disease. This article demonstrated the summaries of the first expert meeting, 2017 International Workshop on Enterovirus Surveillance and Vaccine Development, held by APNES in Taipei, Taiwan, March 2017. 40. Energy-efficient scheduling for multi-objective flexible job shops with variable processing speeds by grey wolf optimization.

Abstract

In recent years, confronted with serious global warming and rapid exhaustion of non-renewable resources, green manufacturing has become an increasingly important theme in the world. As a significant way to achieve the purpose of green manufacturing, the energy-efficient scheduling has been intensively studied by both academia and industry due to its ability to keep a compromise between production efficiency and environmental impacts. To this end, this study investigates the multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem (MOFJSP) with variable processing speeds aiming at minimizing the makespan and total energy consumption simultaneously. An elaborately-designed multi-objective grey wolf optimization (MOGWO) algorithm is proposed to address this issue. Specifically, a three-vector representation corresponding to three sub-problems including machine assignment, speed assignment and operation sequence is utilized for chromosome encoding. A new decoding method (N D M) is presented to obtain active schedules and reach a trade-off between two conflicting criteria. In consideration of the multi-objective problem nature, two Pareto-based mechanisms are developed to determine the leader wolves and the lowest (worst) wolves so that the hierarchy of a wolf pack can be constructed. Finally, to avoid premature convergence and maintain population diversity, a new position updating mechanism (N P U M), which integrates information from both the leader wolves and the lowest wolves based on a comprehensive point of view, is developed to guide the other wolves in the searching space. Extensive numerical experiments on 35 different scale benchmarks have not only verified the effectiveness of N D M and N P U M but also demonstrated that the proposed MOGWO is more effective than well-known multi-objective evolutionary algorithms such as NSGA-II and SPEA-II. • A multi-objective grey wolf optimization (MOGWO) algorithm is proposed for the MOFJSP with variable processing speeds to minimize makespan and total energy consumption. • Two Pareto-based mechanisms are presented to determine the leader wolves and the lowest wolves. • A new decoding method (NDM) is developed to obtain active schedules as well as reach a trade-off between makespan and total energy consumption. • A new position updating mechanism (NPUM) integrating information from both the leader wolves and the lowest wolves is designed to guide the searching process. • Extensive numerical experiments on 35 benchmarks have confirmed the effectiveness of the MOGWO. Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among Chinese children aged 12-17 years. A semi-quantitative 72-food item FFQ was developed for children aged 12-17 years. The reliability and validity of this FFQ were evaluated against 24-h dietary recalls (24 h DRs) to measure the consumption of foods and nutrients. We administered two FFQs and three DRs to children (N = 160) over a period of 1 month to evaluate the reliability and validity. Reliability was examined by quartile agreement and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and validity was examined by quartile agreement, Bland-Altman plots and correlation with DRs. For reliability, the ICCs between the two FFQs ranged from 0.21 to 0.76 for foods and nutrients, and the quartile agreement ranged from 70.0% to 95.0% in the same or adjacent quartiles. Spearman's correlation coefficients of foods and nutrients between the second FFQ and the 24 h DRs ranged from −0.04 to 0.59. The Bland-Altman plots demonstrated good agreement across the range of intakes among nutrients. The quartile agreement ranged from 50.0% to 100.0%, with infrequent misclassification. The FFQ assessment of dietary intakes demonstrated acceptable relative validity and high reproducibility for Chinese children aged 12-17 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

North America experienced life-threatening outbreaks of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in 2014. We retrospectively detected EV-D68 from a child with Wilson's disease in 2008 in Taiwan. After comparing this EV-D68/Taiwan/2008 strain with EV-D68 genomes obtained from the public domain, it was classified as genome type 1-B; it is phylogenetically related to the predominant EV-D68 viruses that circulated in 2009 in Vietnam. It is necessary to strengthen EV-D68 detection globally, including in children with acute liver failure. Abstract

Purpose To evaluate whether diagnostic blood loss can lead to anemia and consequent blood transfusion among postoperative patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Design and Methods This prospective observational study was conducted in a university-affiliated tertiary hospital between January and August 2016. CHD patients aged < 12 years, undergoing cardiac surgery, with a PICU stay > 48 h were included ( n = 205). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the effect of diagnostic blood loss on anemia and transfusion. Results The mean daily phlebotomy volume was 5.40 ± 1.94 mL/d during the PICU stay (adjusted for body weight, 0.63 ± 0.36 mL/kg/d). Daily volume/kg was associated with cyanotic CHD, Pediatric Risk of Mortality III score, and Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction (PELOD)-2 score. In total, 101 (49.3%) patients presented with new or more severe anemia after admission to PICU, which was not associated with phlebotomy volume. Forty-one (20.0%) children received one or more RBC transfusions during their PICU stay. Multivariate analysis indicated that PELOD-2 score > 5, new or more severe anemia, and daily volume/kg of phlebotomy > 0.63 mL/kg/d were significantly associated with transfusion after 48 h of admission to PICU. Conclusions Our findings indicate that diagnostic blood loss is not related to postoperative anemia in children with CHD; however, this factor does correlate with blood transfusion, since it somewhat reflects the severity of illness. Abstract

A method for the synthesis of α , α -bisthiofunctionalized butenolide compounds has been successfully developed. The bis-sulfenylation of γ -substituted butenolides at α-position is promoted by using triethylamine as the catalyst and N -(aryl(alkyl)sulfanyl)succinimides or N -(phenylsulfanyl)phthalimides as sulfenylating reagents under mild reaction conditions. A range of α -sulfenylated butenolide derivatives could be smoothly obtained in moderate to excellent yields. A preliminary attempt at the catalytic asymmetric α -sulfenylation of α -methyl- γ -phenyl-substituted butenolide was also conducted and afforded promising enantioselectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A series of dibenzo[b,j]-1,10-phenanthroline derivatives as N ligands was synthesized and their heteroleptic copper complexes obtained in-situ. These were applied as photosensitizer in photocatalyticCu-Fe water reduction system. Thixantphos as P ligand and 5,8-diphenyl-6,7-dihydrodibenzo[b,j] [1,10]phenanthroline as N ligands constitutes the most efficient photosensitizer among the tested photosensitizer. The highest turnover number of copper was up to 441 and the system achieved a stability of 15 h. Photophysical and electronic chemical character showed that the longer exited time of Cu complex is the reason for the higher photosensitive activity. By theoretical calculation it could be proven that ligand-to-ligand charge transfer is the main energy transition method. Noteworthy, for the first time it could be detected and explained why a C-C single bond at 6,7 positions of phenanthroline could significantly increase the light conversion efficiency. Abstract

Complete resection is pivotal to improve survival to epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Crk SH3-domain-binding g uanine nucleotide-releasing factor (C3G) is involved in multiple signaling pathways and it has opposite roles in different cancers. The present study aimed to identify C3G expression in ovarian tissue samples from patients with EOC and to explore its association with tumor grade. Eighty-seven archival paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed, ovarian cancer tissues with serous histology were stained for C3G by immunohistochemistry. To evaluate the contribution of C3G to Rap1 activity, 36 patients with serous ovarian cancer (SOC) were investigated. Additionally, C3G was knocked down in SKOV3 and HEY cells. C3G regulated Rap1 activity and high Rap1 activity was correlated with poor differentiation, advanced FIGO stage, and unsuccessful cytoreductive surgery of SOC. Knockdown of C3G suppressed cell invasion, intravasation and extravasation, and reduced Rap1 activity and secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9. C3G-mediated activation of Rap1 could direct the tumor pattern of human SOC by promoting the secretion of MMP-2 and MMP-9. These results suggest that C3G is involved in the metastatic spread of EOC.
