Abstract

• The synergistic effects of multiple deformation mechanisms and solid solution strengthening on the mechanical properties of Mo-reinforced CoCrNi medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) were revealed via first principles calculations. • The essential criterion was proposed for the composition design of strong and ductile FCC (CoCrNi) 100- x Mo x MEAs based on the synergy of multiple deformation mechanisms and intense solid solution strengthening. • The optimal composition of FCC (CoCrNi) 100- x Mo x MEAs was predicted as (CoCrNi) 93 Mo 7 according to the essential criterion and the results of first principles calculations. • The accuracy of essential criterion was validated by the comparison with previous experimental data. The assistance of alloying elements provides enormous opportunities for the discovery of high-performance face-centered cubic (FCC) medium-entropy alloys (MEAs). In this work, the influence of alloying element Mo on the phase stability, stacking fault energy (SFE), deformation mechanisms, lattice distortion, and mechanical properties of (CoCrNi) 100– x Mo x (0 ≤ x ≤ 10) MEAs was synthetically explored with the first-principles calculations. It indicates that the FCC phase remains metastable at 0 K, and its stability degenerates with increasing Mo content. The monotonous decrease of SFE is revealed with the rise of Mo content, which promotes the activation of stacking faults, deformation twinning, or martensitic transformation. Raising Mo content also causes the aggravation of lattice distortion and thus triggers intense solid solution strengthening. Significantly, the essential criterion for the composition design of FCC (CoCrNi) 100– x Mo MEAs with superior strength-ductility combination was established based on the synergistic effects between multiple deformation mechanisms and solid solution strengthening. According to the criterion, the optimal composition is predetermined as (CoCrNi) 93 Mo 7 MEA. The criterion is proved to be effective, and it can provide valuable inspiration for the development of alloying-element reinforced FCC multi-principal element alloys. Abstract

• The essential criterion was provided for the composition design of CoCrNi medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) with exceptional strength-ductility combinations. • The analysis on phase stability, deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties is combined in the essential criterion. • The optimal composition space of CoCrNi MEAs was predicted with the adoption of the essential criterion and first principles calculations. • The validity of essential criterion was proved by systematic comparison with numerous experimental data. The development of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs, also called as high- or medium-entropy alloys, HEAs/MEAs) provides tremendous possibilities for materials innovation. However, designing MPEAs with desirable mechanical properties confronts great challenges due to their vast composition space. In this work, we provide an essential criterion to efficiently screen the CoCrNi MEAs with outstanding strength-ductility combinations. The negative Gibbs free energy difference ∆ E FCC-BCC between the face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) phases, the enhancement of shear modulus G and the decline of stacking fault energy (SFE) γ isf are combined as three requisites to improve the FCC phase stability, yield strength, deformation mechanisms, work-hardening ability and ductility in the criterion. The effects of chemical composition on ∆ E FCC-BCC , G and γ isf were investigated with the first principles calculations for Co x Cr 33 Ni 67- x , Co 33 Cr y Ni 67- y and Co z Cr 66- z Ni 34 (0 ≤ x, y ≤ 67 and 0 ≤ z ≤ 66) alloys. Based on the essential criterion and the calculation results, the composition space that displays the negative Gibbs free energy difference ∆ E FCC-BCC , highest shear modulus G and lowest SFE γ isf was screened with the target on the combination of high strength and excellent ductility. In this context, the optimal composition space of Co-Cr-Ni alloys was predicted as 60 at.%–67 at.% Co, 30 at.%–35 at.% Cr and 0 at.%–6 at.% Ni, which coincides well with the previous experimental evidence for Co 55 Cr 40 Ni 5 alloys. The validity of essential criterion is further proved after systematic comparison with numerous experimental data, which demonstrates that the essential criterion can provide significant guidance for the quick exploitation of strong and ductile MEAs and promote the development and application of MPEAs. Abstract

Introduction: To assess value of placental vascularization indices (PVIs) for predicting preeclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR) in different stages of pregnancy in high-risk women.Method: PVIs derived from 3-dimensional power doppler(3DPD) imaging were measured at seven stages of pregnancy: 11-13+6w, 15-19+6w, 20-23+6w, 24-27+6w, 28-31+6w, 32-36+6w, and ≥37w. PE and FGR were used as outcomes in logistic regression models. Area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) of each PVI was calculated, cut-off points were determined to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), and negative likelihood ratio (NLR). Finally, AUCs combined with baseline characteristics, uterine artery pulsatility index (UTPI) and PVIs were used to determine whether PVIs could increase the predictive value.Results: Adverse outcomes occurred in 10.9% of pregnancies. Statistical differences appeared in 32-36+6w only. AUCs of vascularization index (VI) and vascularization flow index (VFI) for 32-36+6w were 0.79 (0.70-0.87, p: 0.000), and 0.78 (0.69-0.88, p: 0.000). Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, PLR, and NLR for VI were 0.91, 0.63, 20%, 98%, 2.39, and 0.15, and those for VFI were 0.62, 0.84, 29%, 95%, 3.75, and 0.45. AUC increased from 0.79 to 0.85 by adding PVIs to baseline characteristics and UTPI model. No statistical significance was found before 32w.Discussion: VI and VFI were valuable for predicting PE and FGR at the 32-36+6w stage, while their values before 32w were poor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The controversy regarding the fate of the Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis) was addressed. The habitat and future existence of the local Indo-Pacific humped-back dolphin in Hongkong is threatened by marine pollution, fishing, increasing shipping movements and major infrastructure projects. A dolphin sanctuary within a designated marine park area was proposed. Lack of an overall conservation strategy, shortcomings in the territory's environmental impact assessment system, and the limited local scientific knowledge concerning the dolphin population were cited as causes of the dolphin problem.

Abstract

Abstract High-resolution digital image correlation (HR-DIC) techniques have become essential in material mechanics to assess strain measurements at the scale of the elementary mechanisms responsible of the deformation in polycrystalline materials. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) coupled with DIC techniques to deepen knowledge on the deformation process of a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy at room temperature. The LSCM technique is capable of detecting both in-plane and out-of-plane strain localization within slip bands at the sub-grain level. The LSCM observations are consistent with previous in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies: The onset of crystal plasticity occurs primarily near Σ3 twin boundaries with macroscopic loading in the elastic domain (macroscopic stress as low as 80% of the 0.2% offset yield strength (Y.S. 0.2%)). This intense irreversible strain localization occurs with either a high Schmid factor (μ > 0.43) or a significant elastic modulus difference between the pair of twins (ΔΕ > 100 GPa). In the plastic deformation domain, transgranular slip activity following slip systems with the highest Schmid factor is mostly responsible for the deformation at the grain level, thus leading to strain percolation. The simultaneous in-plane and out-of-plane deformation assessment via the HR-LSCM-DIC technique was found to be essential for the identification of active slip systems. Finally, the HR-LSCM-DIC technique enabled the quantification of the glide amplitude involved in the three-dimensional shearing process at the grain level that solely in-plane measurements cannot provide. Abstract One-dimensional nickel (Ni) microwires were synthesized by the magnetic-field-induced (MFI) microemulsion-hydrothermal method using Ni nanospheres as seeds. The influence of the chemical conditions and magnetic field on the morphology and magnetic properties of Ni microwires were investigated by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The strength of magnetic field greatly affected the morphology and magnetic properties of Ni microwires. The growth and morphology of Ni microwires depended on the competition between Brownian motion and magnetic dipole moments from magnetic field. The larger nanoparticles with the higher magnetic moments preferred to form one-dimensional Ni microwires and their length increased up to several millimeters with the increasing magnetic field strength, while the average diameter of Ni microwires decreased.
