Abstract

Abstract: The phase separation conditions of sterically stabilized ferrofluids are studied theoretically with major attention paid to the roles of polydispersity and van der Waals attraction. The equilibrium phase stability region is completely determined by a small number of large particles. Highly concentrated drop-like aggregates formed upon separation take up several percent of the volume of a system and account for virtually all of the large-particle fraction. Our analysis also demonstrates that van der Waals interactions play a significant role in ferrofluid phase separation; their influence is comparable to that of dipolar forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To produce Yb-doped yttrium lanthanum oxide (Yb 3+ :(La x Y 1 − x ) 2 O 3 ) thin disc ceramics from laser synthesized nanopowders, two colloidal methods were used: slip casting and electrophoretic deposition. Sintering of the compacts in vacuum (3 × 10 −4 Pa at 1625 °C for 12 h) led to high transparency of the ceramics. Ceramic discs with relative densities higher than 99.99% and grain sizes of about 25 μm were fabricated. The in-line transmittance of 0.5 mm thick Yb 0.17 La 0.19 Y 1.64 O 3 ceramics amounted to 80.5% at 1150 nm wavelength. The materials obtained promise to be good gain media for ytterbium high power pulse disc lasers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
