Abstract: While considerable research has examined the prevalence of IPV in civilian couples, much less information is available on married or cohabitating couples in which one or both parents are active duty soldiers or veterans of foreign wars. In this review, we explore various aspects of the partner violence phenomena among military personnel (i.e., active duty and veterans) and their implications for intervention. We highlight (a) the scope of the problem, (b) discuss domestic violence as defined by the Department of Defense (DoD), (c) list prevalence rates of IPV among military families, (d) identify correlates of IPV, and (e) discuss treatment options for providers working with these couples. We also discuss the barriers to intervention and their implications for victims, perpetrators, and providers. Conclusions and recommendations for future research directions are also briefly discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The link between alcoholism and intimate partner violence (IPV) among heterosexual couples has received a great deal of attention in both the scientific and lay press. However, relative to heterosexual couples, IPV among alcohol-disordered homosexual couples has been grossly understudied. Despite the limited knowledge based on this topic, previous studies suggest that homosexual couples may experience more problematic drinking behaviors, higher rates of IPV, and in general, display more negative factors associated with treatment-seeking behaviors than heterosexual couples. In addition, because the study of alcoholism and IPV among homosexuals is a relatively new phenomenon, research on alcohol use patterns, dyadic adjustment, and partner violence is greatly lacking. Thus, the purpose of this review is to describe the prevalence of these comorbid conditions among lesbian and gay couples, discuss the link between alcohol misuse and partner violence in this population, identify factors that may reduce treatment-seeking behavior among same sex couples, and describe possible treatment approaches. Abstract: Partner violence is a serious public health issue. For couples who enter treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, rates of partner aggression are alarmingly high, with 53% to 63% of couples reporting one or more episodes of partner violence in the year prior to program entry (Murphy & O''Farrell, 1994; Murphy, O''Farrell, Fals-Stewart, & Feeham, 2001; Stuart et al., 2003). Indeed, one of the most challenging clinical issues faced by therapists who treat substance-abusing patients is intimate partner violence (IPV). This review describes the link between substance abuse (alcohol and drug) and partner violence and identifies treatment strategies for providers working with these clients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This review examines what have been, to this point, generally two divergent lines of research: (a) effects of parental drug abuse on children, and (b) effects of children''s exposure to interparental violence. A small, but growing body of literature has documented the robust relationship between drug use and intimate partner violence. Despite awareness of the interrelationship, little attention has been paid to the combined effect of these deleterious parent behaviors on children in these homes. Thus, we argue for the need to examine the developmental impact of these behaviors (both individually and combined) on children in these homes and for treatment development to reflect how each of these parent behaviors may affect children of substance abusers. Abstract: A large and growing empirical literature reveals a robust relationship between alcohol use and the occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV). However, the role of alcohol use and intoxication in episodes of IPV, particularly with respect to alcohol''s potential causal or facilitative function in the occurrence of partner aggression, remains a source of much controversy and considerable debate. The purpose of this review is to (a) describe briefly IPV and the types of behaviors subsumed under this label, (b) examine evidence for the link between alcohol use and IPV, (c) explicate factors (e.g., antisocial personality disorder) that may moderate this relationship, and (d) discuss the primary conceptual models put forth to explain this association. Recommendations for interventions that consider the relationship between alcohol use and IPV are also provided. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Child maltreatment is a serious and prevalent problem in the United States. Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) were established in 1985 to better respond to cases of child maltreatment and address problems associated with an uncoordinated community-wide response to child maltreatment. CACs are community-based, multidisciplinary organizations that seek to improve the response and prosecution of child maltreatment in the United States. The primary purpose of this manuscript is to present a review of the literature on CACs, including the CAC model (e.g., practices, services, and programs) and CACs’ response to cases of child maltreatment. This review suggests that there is preliminary evidence supporting the efficacy of CACs in reducing the stress and trauma imposed on child victims during the criminal justice investigation process into the maltreatment. However, this review also identified important CAC polices, practices, and components that need further evaluation and improvement. In addition, due to the methodological limitations and gaps in the existing literature, research is needed on CACs that employ longitudinal designs and larger samples sizes and that evaluate a larger array of center-specific outcomes. Finally, this review suggests that CACs might benefit from incorporating ongoing research into the CAC model and accreditation standards and by recognizing the importance of integrating services for child and adult victims of interpersonal violence. Abstract: The present study examined whether suspecting one''s mother versus father of alcohol abuse was associated with parent–offspring relationships, and the degree to which parent–child relationships were associated with depressive symptoms. As compared to non-ACOAs (n=288), ACOAs (n=100) reported more negative parent–child relationships (i.e., greater alienation, poorer communication, less trust, greater emotional longing, and more negative attitudes toward the parent) and increased depressive symptoms on the POMS (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1992). A closer look revealed that suspected maternal alcohol abuse was associated with more negative mother–child relationships, whereas suspected paternal alcohol abuse was associated with more negative father–child relationships. Both maternal alcohol abuse and paternal alcohol abuse predicted depressive symptoms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
