• We examine whether reputation functions as a self-disciplining mechanism in providing higher quality MBS. • We find that issuer banks' reputational capital predicts future performance. • However, the asset pools securitized by reputable issuers during the pre-GFC credit boom period were of worse quality. • We find that foreign issuers are more likely to produce lower quality MBS. We examine the link between issuer bank reputation and the performance of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) in the European market. We find that MBS sold by reputable issuer banks are collateralised by higher quality asset pools with lower delinquency rates and are less likely to be downgraded. However, during boom periods – characterized by declining credit standards, MBS originated by reputable issuer banks tend to be collateralised by lower quality assets, compared to normal periods. • Investigate ethnic minority households access mortgages in the UK in the period after the Great Financial Crisis (GFC). • Use a large dataset of 20,121 households. • Find that Black households are less likely to obtain mortgages in comparison to economically similar White households. • Black households' inability to access mortgages have deteriorated in the post-GFC period. We examine whether households from ethnic minorities have the same ability to access mortgages in the UK in the period after the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007–2009. Using a large sample of 20,120 households, we find that Black households are less likely to obtain mortgages in comparison to economically similar White households. • Little is known regarding the contagious effects of firm-level balance sheet characteristics in emerging markets. • This study shows that the bi-directional interactions between banking sector and non-financial corporate sectors intensify in high-volatility periods. • The findings differ according to sectors and firm-level balance sheet characteristics. • During times of financial stress, banks have more interaction with the sectors that produce to the domestic market and that have less access to international finance. • FX balance sheet mismatch, low export ratio, high leverage ratio and trade debt strengthen the degree of financial contagion across banks and firms. Using the Borsa Istanbul sector indices, this study shows that the bi-directional interactions between banking sector and non-financial corporate sectors intensify in high-volatility periods. The findings differ across sub-sectors. For example, during times of financial stress, banks have more interaction with the sectors that produce to the domestic market and that have less access to international finance, as opposed to the exporting sectors and sectors with external integration. Taking into account firm-level balance sheet characteristics, further suggest that, FX balance sheet mismatch, low export ratio, high leverage ratio and trade debt strengthen the degree of financial contagion.
