Abstract

In this work alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP)/iron (Fe) composites were developed as a new family of biodegradable, load-bearing and cytocompatible materials. The composites with composition from pure ceramic to pure metallic samples were consolidated by pulsed electric current assisted sintering to minimise processing time and temperature while improving their mechanical performance. The mechanical strength of the composites was increased and controlled with the Fe content, passing from brittle to ductile failure. In particular, the addition of 25 vol% of Fe produced a ceramic matrix composite with elastic modulus much closer to cortical bone than that of titanium or biodegradable magnesium alloys and specific compressive strength above that of stainless steel, chromium-cobalt alloys and pure titanium, currently used in clinic for internal fracture fixation. All the composites studied exhibited higher degradation rate than their individual components, presenting values around 200 μm/year, but also their compressive strength did not show a significant reduction in the period required for bone fracture consolidation. Composites showed preferential degradation of α-TCP areas rather than β-TCP areas, suggesting that α-TCP can produce composites with higher degradation rate. The composites were cytocompatible both in indirect and direct contact with bone cells. Osteoblast-like cells attached and spread on the surface of the composites, presenting proliferation rate similar to cells on tissue culture-grade polystyrene and they showed alkaline phosphatase activity. Therefore, this new family of composites is a potential alternative to produce implants for temporal reduction of bone fractures. Statement of Significance Biodegradable alpha-tricalcium phosphate/iron (α-TCP/Fe) composites are promising candidates for the fabrication of temporal osteosynthesis devices. Similar to biodegradable metals, these composites can avoid implant removal after bone fracture healing, particularly in young patients. In this work, α-TCP/Fe composites are studied for the first time in a wide range of compositions, showing not only higher degradation rate in vitro than pure components, but also good cytocompatibility and mechanical properties controllable with the Fe content. Ceramic matrix composites show high specific strength and low elastic modulus, thus better fulfilling the requirements for bone fractures fixation. A significant advance over previous works on the topic is the use of pulsed electric current assisted sintering together with α-TCP, convenient to improve the mechanical performance and degradation rate, respectively. Abstract: Introduction: The excessive and inappropriate use of carbapenems is responsible for the development of resistance. The scientific community has been requiring caution and using these agents in specific cases only. Objectives: The authors had for aim to evaluate the appropriate use of carbapenems in a French university hospital. Design: A retrospective survey was made over two months as a clinical audit to assess professional practices. The evaluation criteria for this audit were: the appropriateness of the indication, the possibility of alternative therapeutic strategies, the choice of an antibiotic combination, duration of treatment and dosage. Results: During the audit period, 103 carbapenem prescriptions were included. Ninety-nine cases were analyzed. Among the carbapenem prescriptions, 28.3% (28/99) did not meet the criterion “appropriateness of the indication”. Carbapenems were mostly prescribed empirically (60/99 [60%]) and most often for lung infections or nosocomial urinary tract infections. Finally, 66.7% (66/99) of all prescriptions were considered inappropriate for at least one criterion. The rate of inappropriateness ranged around 30% for each criterion. Conclusions: This study allowed us to assess professional practices for carbapenem prescriptions. The overall rate of inappropriateness was quite important. Carbapenems were not always used appropriately. These findings highlight the need of new regional guidelines and regular updating of local best practices recommendations. Finally, a stricter validation of carbapenem prescriptions will be implemented at the hospital pharmacy level. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In general, production oriented design (POD) and POD-checks are well-known, extensively discussed topics. Papers and books on these topics began to appear already in the 1970s. Nowadays, there are lots of powerful possibilities for POD and POD-checks. Nevertheless, car manufacturers are still confronted with challenges in these areas. Especially with respect to POD-checks, sustainable solutions that create transparency as far as existing possibilities are concerned are missing. It is often unclear which specific validation methods/tools exist in different departments. This is a critical situation. In connection with new projects, it is possible that suboptimal POD-checks are favoured due to missing transparency. Abstract: Cortical bone, constituting the outer shell of long bones, is continuously renewed by bone cells in response to daily stimuli. This process, known as bone remodelling, is essential for proper bone functioning in both physiological and pathological conditions. Classical bone remodelling models do not, or only implicitly do, take into account physico-chemical phenomena, focussing on the mechanosensitivity property of the tissue. The aim of this paper is to carry out an investigation of the multiphysical phenomena occuring in bone life. Using a recent multiscale model combining piezoelectricity and electrokinetics to poromechanics, the usual viewpoint of bone remodelling models is questioned and new research avenues are proposed. Abstract: The recently discovered non-mevalonate pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis serves as the unique source of terpenoids in numerous pathogenic eubacteria and in apicoplast-type protozoa, most notably Plasmodium, but is absent in mammalian cells. It is therefore an attractive target for anti-infective chemotherapy. The first committed step of the non-mevalonate pathway is catalyzed by 2C-methyl-d-erythritol 4-phosphate synthase (IspC). Using photometric and NMR spectroscopic assays, we screened extracts of Mediterranean plants for inhibitors of the enzyme. Abstract: The ultra-high sedimentation rates at ODP Site 1233, situated at 41°S off Chile, enabled the investigation of the millennial to multi-centennial scale relationship and variability of the Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) extent, as indicated by the Fe relative concentration record, and offshore sea surface temperatures (SST) during the last glacial period. The close relationship of the Fe record and the SST pattern as described previously for the 50–19kyr time-interval extends in the older part of the records (70–50kyr). During marine isotope stage (MIS) 4, a delay of ∼500yr of PIS retreats relative to SST increases has been found, similar to that described for the coldest part of MIS 3 and 2. During early MIS 3 (∼60–56kyr), synchronous variability in both records resembles the deglacial-to-Holocene time-interval, reflecting either a meltwater pulse or a dominant control of the Fe input by rainfall changes related to a rather small PIS. Results of spectral analysis on the detrended records show three main periodicity-bands at ∼4.5–3.1, 2.4–2.2 and 1.2–0.8kyr. The possible origins of these bands are discussed in terms of stochastic resonance and solar forcing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We present a novel dual thin-layer flow cell double-disk electrode design, which due to its high collection efficiency in combination with a reasonable time resolution allows highly sensitive measurements of electro-active species generated during electrochemical reactions on the working electrode. Most important, it allows for rapid changes of the electrolyte during the measurements, which in combination with a thin-film electrode, where an inert glassy carbon substrate is covered by a thin film of carbon-supported noble metal catalyst, makes it particularly useful for kinetic studies on electrocatalytic fuel cell reactions under realistic conditions (continuous reaction, continuous electrolyte flow) and on realistic materials (supported catalysts).The performance of the set-up and its suitability for kinetic studies, in particular for transient experiments involving rapid electrolyte exchange, are demonstrated in potentiodynamic and transient potentiostatic measurements for the oxygen reduction reaction on carbon-supported Pt catalysts and, for comparison, on Pt-free Vulcan carbon supports. PURPOSE: To explore potential psychosocial predictors for initiation of sexual intercourse among middle-school, inner-city youth, using longitudinal data from the Healthy and Alive! project. METHODS: We conducted hierarchical, logistic regression with adjustment for intraclass correlation over two sequential periods, including seventh and eighth grades (N = 3163), to assess the independent influence of psychosocial and demographic factors. Internally reliable scales to assess psychosocial influences were created, based on major theories of behavior. The sample was 52% female, 51% black, 30% Hispanic, 9% white, and 3% Asian. At baseline, 13% of girls and 39% of boys reported already having initiated sexual intercourse. RESULTS: Personal and perceived peer norms about refraining from sex were a strong and consistent protective factor. Alcohol and other drug use, poor academic performance, male gender, and black race were consistent risk factors. Self-efficacy showed a mixed effect: protective in the seventh grade but increasing risk in the eighth grade. Speaking a language other than English was a protective factor in seventh grade. Both psychosocial and demographic factors provided independent explanatory power. CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial factors, particularly norms about having sex, influence initiation of sexual intercourse. 43. Composition and activity of high surface area PtRu catalysts towards adsorbed CO and methanol electrooxidation—: A DEMS study

Abstract

The activity of unsupported high surface area PtRu catalysts of different Pt:Ru ratio towards preadsorbed CO and the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution has been studied at room temperature using differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS). Adsorbed CO monolayer stripping DEMS experiments show that (i) the contribution of double-layer charging increases with the Ru content, reaching up to 50% of the total stripping charge at approximately 40 at% Ru; (ii) the onset of COad oxidation for Ru containing catalysts starts at approximately 0.3 VRHE, about 0.15 V more negative compared with Pt; and (iii) both the onset potential and the peak potential for COad-stripping depends on the Ru content, reaching the most negative values at medium Ru contents, for 20–60 at% Ru. COad-stripping was furthermore used to determine the active surface area of the PtRu catalysts. Based on the electron yield of 1.9 electrons per CO2 product molecule COad can be identified as the stable adsorbed product of methanol dehydrogenation on all PtRu catalysts. Potentiodynamic methanol oxidation experiments show a clear effect of the chemical composition of the PtRu catalysts. The onset of CO2 formation occurs most negative, at slightly below 0.3 VRHE, for PtRu catalysts containing about 40–60 at% Ru. In the technologically interesting potential regime of 0.4–0.5 VRHE PtRu catalysts containing small or medium amounts of Ru (15, 42, 46 at%) are most active, while at more positive potentials more Pt rich catalysts containing approximately 15 at% Ru are most active. These activities refer to the inherent chemical activity obtained by normalizing the oxidation current to the active surface area determined by COad-stripping. Without normalization, the Pt rich catalyst (15 at% Ru) would appear as the most active one, underlining the necessity to properly account for variations in the active surface area. For all compositions methylformate formation starts at potentials around 0.5 VRHE, about 0.2 V positive of the onset of CO2 formation, indicating that at low anodic potentials complete oxidation of methanol to CO2 is preferred. The high current efficiency of both the PtRu and the Pt catalysts for the MOR, with electron yields of slightly above six electrons per CO2 product molecule, is attributed to readsorption and complete oxidation of partially oxidized reaction intermediates, which is more facile for electrodes with high catalyst loadings, as used here, than for electrodes with lower loadings or smooth electrodes. Abstract

• The area analysed is autotrophic over an annual cycle. • Marine net biological production is estimated at 19 mmol m−2 d−1 in O 2 equivalents. • Different dynamics can explain productivity peaks in different times of the year. • Water is oxygen undersaturated during the whole winter period. As part of the OSMOSIS project, a fleet of gliders surveyed the Porcupine Abyssal Plain site (Northeast Atlantic) from September 2012 to September 2013. Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured in the top 1000 m of the water column. Net community production (N) over an annual cycle using an oxygen-budget approach was compared to variations of several parameters (wind speed, mixing layer depth relative to euphotic depth, temperature, density, net heat flux) showing that the main theories (Critical Depth Hypothesis, Critical Turbulence Hypothesis, Heat-flux Hypothesis) can explain the switch between net heterotrophy to net autotrophy in different times of the year, The dynamics leading to an increase in productivity were related to shifts in regimes, such as the possible differences in nutrient concentration. The oxygen concentration profiles used for this study constitute a unique dataset spanning the entire productive season resulting in a data series longer than in previous studies. Net autotrophy was found at the site with a net production of (6.4 ± 1.9) mol m−2 in oxygen equivalents (or (4.3 ± 1.3) mol m−2 in carbon equivalents). The period exhibiting a deep chlorophyll maximum between 10 m and 40 m of depth contributed (1.5 ± 0.5) mol m−2 in oxygen equivalent to the total N.
