Research indicates that concentrations of labile iron in Southern Ocean seawater are generally lowest in surface water columns and higher in deep water. Latitude, however, was found to affect iron profiles, with concentrations lower in the Antarctic Front and higher in the region south of the Antarctic Divergence.

Abstract

Background: A targeted agent combined with chemotherapy is the standard treatment in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The present phase III study was conducted to compare two doses of bevacizumab combined with irinotecan, 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (FOLFIRI) in the second-line setting after first-line therapy with bevacizumab plus oxaliplatin- based therapy. Patients and methods: Patients were randomly assigned to receive FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab 5 or 10 mg/kg in 2- week cycles until disease progression. The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS), and secondary end points included overall survival (OS), time to treatment failure (TTF), and safety. Results: Three hundred and eighty-seven patients were randomized between September 2009 and January 2012 from 100 institutions in Japan. Baseline patient characteristics were well balanced between the two groups. Efficacy was evaluated in 369 patients (5 mg/kg, n = 181 and 10 mg/kg, n = 188). Safety was evaluated in 365 patients (5 mg/kg, n = 180 and 10 mg/kg, n = 185). The median PFS was 6.1 versus 6.4 months (hazard ratio, 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.75-1.21; P = 0.676), and median TTF was 5.2 versus 5.2 months (hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% CI 0.81-1.25; P = 0.967), respectively, for the bevacizumab 5 and 10 mg/kg groups. Follow-up of OS is currently ongoing. Adverse events, including hypertension and hemorrhage, occurred at similar rates in both groups. Conclusion: Bevacizumab 10 mg/kg plus FOLFIRI as the second-line treatment did not prolong PFS compared with bevacizumab 5 mg/kg plus FOLFIRI in patients with mCRC. If bevacizumab is continued after first-line therapy in mCRC, a dose of 5 mg/kg is appropriate for use as second-line treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Ultrasonic scalpel for gastric cancer surgery: a prospective randomized study.

Abstract

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential advantages of the ultrasonic scalpel compared with the conventional technique in gastric cancer surgery.Methods: Patients with resectable adenocarcinoma of the stomach were randomly assigned to ultrasonic scalpel or conventional technique. We used the HARMONIC FOCUS (Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.) as ultrasonic scalpel.Results: Between February 2010 and December 2010, 60 patients with resectable gastric cancer were enrolled into the study. Operative time was significantly shorter with the ultrasonic arm than with the conventional arm (median 238.5 vs. 300.5 min; P = 0.0004). Blood loss was also significantly lower in the ultrasonic arm than in the conventional arm (median 351.0 vs. 569.5 ml; P = 0.016). Clavien-Dindo grades of postoperative complications were similar in the two groups. From a questionnaire survey of operators, the ultrasonic scalpel significantly reduced the stress of lymph node dissection (3.67 vs. 2.87; P = 0.0006). However, in assisting surgeons, the contributions to surgery, study, and technical improvement of the ultrasonic group were lower than in the conventional group.Conclusions: This study shows that the ultrasonic scalpel is a reliable and safe tool for open gastric cancer surgery. Abstract

We have numerically investigated two-dimensional (2D) distributed feedback (DFB) lasing in a 2D photonic crystal (PhC) with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Our analysis is based on the frequency-dependent finite-difference time-domain method, and includes optical gain, spatial distribution, and homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects in a QD ensemble. A very small threshold current of ∼10 μA was obtained in a 2D PhC with InAs QDs using realistic material and structural parameters. We also pointed out that improving the size uniformity and controlling the spatial distribution of QDs can reduce the threshold current. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The residual stresses in YAG phase of the melt growth Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite were studied at room temperature by means of the indentation fracture test and finite element stress analysis. The YAG phase taken out from the composite was used as a reference sample without thermally induced residual stresses. The apparent fracture toughness of YAG phase with residual stress in the composite was higher than that of the reference sample of bare YAG. From the difference in fracture toughness value between the YAG in the composite and the bare YAG, the residual stress of YAG in the composite was estimated to be −170±100 and −220±130MPa in the cross-sections perpendicular and parallel to the solidification direction, respectively. The experimentally measured spatial distribution of the residual stress in YAG phase in the composite was accounted for by the result of finite element analysis, which showed that the residual stress is different from position to position due to the variation in local morphology of YAG and Al2O3 within the composite. Abstract: We report formation and optical properties of site-controlled, multi-stack InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in GaAs nanowires (NWs) by selective metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. InGaAs/GaAs QDs are realized in GaAs NWs grown on patterned GaAs(111)B substrates in the form of InGaAs/GaAs heterostructures and identified by structural analyses and photoluminescence characterization. Optical characterization at 10K corroborates formation of high-quality, multi-stack InGaAs/GaAs QD-in-NWs up to 50-stack without degradation of PL intensities. In addition, light emission at room temperature from multi-stack InGaAs/GaAs QDs embedded in GaAs NWs is realized. These results would enable the realization of high-performance IBSCs based on site-controlled QD-in-NWs utilizing existing, well-established NW growth technologies on a GaAs platform. Abstract

Axial strain of Bi2223 superconducting filaments in Ag-sheathed superconducting composites reinforced by stainless steel lamination has been evaluated by in situ synchrotron-radiation diffraction. The Bi2223 filaments in the laminated composites were under 0.11% of compressive residual strain, whereas the residual strain of filaments in the composite after removing stainless steel layers was only 0.02% in compression. Under large tensile load, the composite showed a clear multiple fracture with an almost constant filament strain of about 0.11% in tension. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: A method to determine complex amplitudes of index and absorption gratings in photorefractive multiple quantum wells is presented. Usually to evaluate these parameters, spectral measurement of absorption change due to the applied field over a wide wavelength range is required and the index change is calculated through the Kramers–Krönig’s relationship. In our method, only a set of measured data for a photorefractive two-wave mixing set-up with small sinusoidal phase modulation for fixed wavelength is needed. This is thus well adapted to in situ characterization of systems that operate at a fixed wavelength. Real and imaginary part of the gains owing to the index and the absorption gratings are calculated from the output signals of the system. We apply this method to our photorefractive multiple quantum well devices operating at 1064 nm, and obtain consistent results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
