Abstract

Abstract: The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP), as a consequence or the spin-statistics connection, is one of the basic principles of the modern physics. Being at the very basis of our understanding of matter, it spurs a lively debate on its possible limits, deeply rooted as it is in the very foundations of Quantum Field Theory. The VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle) experiment established the world''s best limit on the probability that PEP is violated by electrons, using the method of searching for PEP forbidden atomic transitions in copper. We describe the experimental method and the obtained results; we briefly present future plans to go beyond the actual limit by upgrading the experiment using vetoed new spectroscopic fast Silicon Drift Detectors. We also shortly mention the possibility of using a similar experimental technique to search for possible X-rays generated in the spontaneous collapse models of quantum mechanics. Abstract

Abstract: K X-rays from pionic hydrogen and deuterium as well as muonic hydrogen have been measured using a highresolution crystal spectrometer at the _E5 beam line of the Paul Scherrer Institut. From the ground-state level shifts and broadenings of the hydrogen isotopes, caused by the strong interaction, low-energy parameters of QCD become accessible as are the pion-nucleon scattering lengths and the threshold production strength of pions in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Muonic hydrogen allows important insights in the de-excitation cascade of such exotic atoms, the understanding of which is essential for a precision determination of the above-mentioned quantities. First experimental results are discussed in the context of recent results from theoretical e_orts within the approach of chiral pertubation theory and atomic cascade calculations. Abstract

The kaonic 3He and 4He 3d→2p transitions in gaseous targets were observed by the SIDDHARTA experiment. The X-ray energies of these transitions were measured with large-area silicon-drift detectors using the timing information of the K+K− pairs produced by the DAΦNE e+e− collider. The strong-interaction shifts and widths both of the kaonic 3He and 4He 2p states were determined, which are much smaller than the results obtained by the previous experiments. The “kaonic helium puzzle” (a discrepancy between theory and experiment) was now resolved.

Abstract

Abstract: The kaonic 3He and 4He X-rays emitted in the transitions were measured in the SIDDHARTA experiment. The widths of the kaonic 3He and 4He 2p states were determined to be , and , respectively. Both results are consistent with the theoretical predictions. The width of kaonic 4He is much smaller than the value of determined by the experiments performed in the 70ʼs and 80ʼs, while the width of kaonic 3He was determined for the first time. Abstract: Very recently, we have performed a couple of experiments, KEK PS-E549/E570, for the detailed study of the strange tribaryon obtained in KEK PS-E471. In contrast to the previous proton spectrum, no narrow (∼20 MeV) peak structure was found either in the inclusive 4He(stopped , p) or in the semi-inclusive 4He(stopped , ) reaction channel, which is equivalent to the previous E471 event trigger condition. Detailed analysis of the present data and simulation shows that the peak, corresponding to , has been an experimental artifact. Abstract: A search for tribaryon states was performed at KEK-PS. We adopted the 4He() reaction to populate the states with strangeness −1, charge 0 and isospin 1. No significant narrow structure was observed in the mass region from 3000 to 3200 in an inclusive missing mass spectrum. The upper limit of the formation branching ratio was determined to be , and with 95% confidence level for a narrow state with an assumed width of 0, 20 and 40 , respectively. Abstract

Abstract: The antikaon interaction on nucleons and nuclei in the low-energy regime is neither simple nor well understood. Rather direct access to this field is provided by x-ray spectroscopy of light kaonic atoms like kaonic hydrogen, deuterium and helium isotopes. A series of precision measurements on kaonic atoms was performed very successfully by the SIDDHARTA Collaboration at the DAΦNE electron-positron collider at LNF-INFN (Frascati, Italy). Consequently, new precision data on the strong interaction observables (i.e. energy shift and broadening of low-lying atomic states) were delivered having an important impact on the theory of low-energy QCD with strangeness. Presently, the follow-up experiment, SIDDHARTA-2, is in preparation, aiming at a determination of the strong interaction observables in kaonic deuterium as the highest priority; other type of measurements (light and heavier kaonic atoms) are as well foreseen. With the kaonic deuterium data the antikaon-nucleon isospin-resolved scattering lengths can be extracted for the first time. An overview of the progress and present status of experimental studies and an outlook to future perspectives in this fascinating research field is given. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The SIDDHARTA experiment (SIlicon Drift Detector for Hadronic Atom Research by Timing Application) had the aim to perform a precise measurement of K-series kaonic hydrogen x-rays and the first-ever measurement of the kaonic deuterium x-rays to determine the strong-interaction energy-level shifts and widths of the lowest lying atomic states. These measurements offer a unique possibility to precisely determine the isospin-dependent kaon-nucleon(KN) scattering lengths which are directly connected with the physics of the KN interaction. The experiment combined the excellent low-energy kaon beam generated at DAΦNE, allowing to use gaseous targets, with excellent fast X-rays detectors: Silicon Drift Detectors. SIDDHARTA was installed on DAΦNE in autumn 2008 and took data till late 2009. Apart of the kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium measurements, we have performed the kaonic helium transitions to the 2p level (L-lines) measurements: for the first time in a gaseous target for kaonic helium 4 and for the first time ever for kaonic helium 3.
