In monopolar electrode configuration, the shape of the motor unit potential (MUP) undergoes essential morphologic changes with increasing distance from the innervation zone. In particular, the rising phase of the MUP slows down and becomes longer as the electrode is moved further from the innervation zone. Based on this, it is hypothesized that the maximum slope of the rising phase of a monopolar MUP (SlopeMAX) would reach its highest value at the innervation zone. Herein, we sought to determine whether the location of the innervation zone coincides with the position in the muscle of the monopolar MUP with highest SlopeMAX and whether new criteria for the localization of the innervation region can be proposed based on the SlopeMAX of monopolar potentials. Multichannel surface (13×5 electrode array) and intramuscular (wire electrodes inserted with needles of lengths 15 and 25mm) EMG signals were concurrently recorded in monopolar configuration from the biceps brachii muscle of 10 healthy subjects. The spatial distribution of monopolar and bipolar MUPs along the fibers' direction were obtained by spike-triggered averaging of the surface EMG. We found that the monopolar MUP with steepest rising phase (i.e., highest SlopeMAX) was located either just above or at half of the inter-electrode distance from the innervation zone. High levels of agreement (94-98%) were found between the position of the innervation zone assessed with the SlopeMAX criteria of monopolar potentials and the position identified using the phase reversal criteria of bipolar potentials. The present results legitimize the use of compound muscle action potentials (M waves) to localize the innervation zone: this location would correspond to the electrode position which yielded the monopolar M wave with highest SlopeMAX. Background: The innervation zone (IZ) corresponds to the location of the neuromuscular junctions. Its location can be determined by using arranged surface linear electrode arrays. Typically, voluntary muscle contractions (VC) are used in this method. However, it also may be necessary to locate the IZ under clinical conditions such as spasticity, in which this type of contraction is difficult to perform. Therefore, contractions imposed by electrostimulation (ES) can be an alternative. There is little background comparing the locations of IZ obtained by two different types of contractions.Objective: Evaluate the concordance between using voluntary and imposed contractions from electrostimulation in order to determine the location of the innervation zone of the tibialis anterior muscle in healthy volunteers.Methods: The tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of sixteen volunteers (men: 8; women: 8; age: 22.1±1.4years, weight: 61.6±7.5kg, height: 167.1±7.5cm) were evaluated using a linear electrode array. The IZ of the TA muscle was located using two types of muscle contractions, voluntary (10% MVC) and imposed contractions by ES. The concordance between both conditions was evaluated using the Bland-Altman method and the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). The analyses were applied to the absolute and relative positions to the length of an anatomical landmark frame.Results: CCC for absolute position was 0.98 (p<0.0001, 95% CI [0.98-1.00], and CCC for relative positions also was 0.98 (p<0.0001, 95% CI [0.97-1.00]). The Bland-Altman analysis for absolute data showed an average difference of -0.63mm (SD: 4.1). Whereas, for adjusted data, the average difference was -0.20% (SD: 1.2). The power of the results, based on absolute data, was 98%, whereas for relative data, 82%.Conclusion: In healthy volunteers, there was a substantially concordance between the location of the IZ of the TA muscle derived from using contractions imposed by ES and the location derived from using VC. Purpose: Developing a real time method to estimate generation, extinction and propagation of muscle fibre action potentials from bi-dimensional and high density surface electromyogram (EMG). Method: A multi-frame generalization of an optical flow technique including a source term is considered. A model describing generation, extinction and propagation of action potentials is fit to epochs of surface EMG. Results: The algorithm is tested on simulations of high density surface EMG (inter-electrode distance equal to 5 mm) from finite length fibres generated using a multi-layer volume conductor model. The flow and source term estimated from interference EMG reflect the anatomy of the muscle, i.e. the direction of the fibres (2° of average estimation error) and the positions of innervation zone and tendons under the electrode grid (mean errors of about 1 and 2 mm, respectively). The global conduction velocity of the action potentials from motor units under the detection system is also obtained from the estimated flow. The processing time is about 1 ms per channel for an epoch of EMG of duration 150 ms. Conclusions: A new real time image processing algorithm is proposed to investigate muscle anatomy and activity. A method to detect automatically the location of innervation zones (IZs) from 16-channel surface EMG (sEMG) recordings from the external anal sphincter (EAS) muscle is presented in order to guide episiotomy during child delivery. The new algorithm (2DCorr) is applied to individual motor unit action potential (MUAP) templates and is based on bidimensional cross correlation between the interpolated image of each MUAP template and two images obtained by flipping upside-down (around a horizontal axis) and left–right (around a vertical axis) the original one. The method was tested on 640 simulated MUAP templates of the sphincter muscle and compared with previously developed algorithms (Radon Transform, RT; Template Match, TM). Experimental signals were detected from the EAS of 150 subjects using an intra-anal probe with 16 equally spaced circumferential electrodes. The results of the three algorithms were compared with the actual IZ location (simulated signal) and with IZ location provided by visual analysis (VA) (experimental signals). For simulated signals, the inter quartile error range (IQR) between the estimated and the actual locations of the IZ was 0.20, 0.23, 0.42, and 2.32 interelectrode distances (IED) for the VA, 2DCorr, RT and TM methods respectively. Background Botulinum toxin (BTX) acts on the neuromuscular junction which can be located by the innervation zone (IZ). Clinically, the motor point (MP) is homologous to the IZ and it is used as the injection site of BTX. Differences in the effectiveness of the application of BTX between MP and IZ locations have been determined. Objective Compare the location of the MP obtained using electrical stimulation and the location of the IZ using a linear surface electrodes array on the biceps brachii muscle. Methods The biceps brachii muscle of twenty men was assessed. The MP was located using the torque measurement generated by electrical stimulation. The IZ was detected using a linear surface electrodes array. Results A difference between the MP and the IZ positions (75.8 vs. 86.5 mm, delta 10.7 mm; p = 0.003, post-hoc power 0.89) was observed. Discussion The magnitude of the difference between the MP and the IZ may be clinically relevant. The IZ location using surface electromyography as a guide to optimize BTX injection is proposed. Abstract: The assessment of abdominal muscles has became popular in recent years because the study of “core muscles” is now considered a pivotal approach for a number of fields. The purpose of this study was to describe the innervation zone (IZ) locations and optimal electrode sites in two core muscles: the obliquus externus (OE) and the obliquus internus (OI) abdominis muscles. Twenty healthy male subjects were recruited and the IZ location was studied during a submaximal isometric contraction using multichannel surface EMG. The optimal electrode position for OI was found to be 2cm lower the most prominent point of the anterior superior iliac spine, just medial and superior to the inguinal ligament. The optimal electrode position for OE was found to be 14cm from the median line, lower the level of 1cm above umbilicus, parallel to the line extending from the most inferior point of the costal margin to the opposite pubic tubercle (almost 45° with respect to the median line). Findings showed that for OI and OE muscles it is possible to provide indications for a muscle belly area suited for proper positioning of at least an electrode pair. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Measuring muscle forces in vivo is invasive and consequently indirect methods e.g., electromyography (EMG) are used in estimating muscular force production. The aim of the present paper was to examine what kind of effect the disruption of the physiological signal caused by the innervation zone has in predicting the force/torque output from surface EMG. Twelve men (age 26 (SD ±3)years; height 179 (±6)cm; body mass 73 (±6)kg) volunteered as subjects. They were asked to perform maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in elbow flexion, and submaximal contractions at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 75% of the recorded MVC. EMG was measured from biceps brachii muscle with an electrode grid of 5 columns×13 rows. Force–EMG relationships were determined from individual channels and as the global mean value. The relationship was deemed inconsistent if EMG value did not increase in successive force levels. Root mean squared errors were calculated for 3rd order polynomial fits. All subjects had at least one (4–52) inconsistent channel. Two subjects had inconsistent relationship calculated from the global mean. The mean root mean squared error calculated using leave one out method for the fits of the individual channels (0.33±0.17) was higher (P <0.001) than the error for the global mean fit (0.16±0.08). It seems that the disruption of the physiological signal caused by the innervation zone affects the consistency of the force–EMG relationship on single bipolar channel level. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of the estimated innervation zone (IZ) locations obtained from cross-correlation, the minimum amplitude, and maximum center frequency criteria. Eight healthy men (mean±SD age=23.0±4.3 yrs) performed isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors, and 15 separate bipolar surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were detected from the vastus lateralis. A custom software program was used to estimate the location of the IZ based on: (1) the EMG channel that demonstrated the lowest amplitude, (2) the EMG channel that showed the highest mean frequency, and (3) the EMG channel that demonstrated the lowest peak cross-correlation between the signals from adjacent channels. The IZ location estimates from the lowest amplitude and highest mean frequency criteria were accurate in only 43.75% and 7.5% of the cases, respectively. The accuracy of the cross-correlation-based method was 90%. The cross-correlation-based method was much more accurate for estimating IZ location than were the lowest amplitude and highest mean frequency criteria. Cross-correlation could potentially be used for estimating the location of the IZ without the need for visual inspection of EMG signals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of skinfold (SF) thicknesses at four locations on the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle and the placement of accelerometers relative to the innervation zone (IZ) on the mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) responses during incremental cycle ergometry. Twenty adults (age±SD=23.8±3.0years) participated in the investigation. The MMG signals were detected during incremental cycle ergometry using four accelerometers placed on the right VL. Prior to the cycle ergometer test, SF thicknesses were measured. Simple linear regression analyses and one-way repeated measures analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were performed. The present study found that only 10% of the regression analyses and mean comparisons were significant (p <0.05). Furthermore, the accelerometer placed at the most proximal site (Prox 2) had significantly greater MMG amplitude and MMG MPF than accelerometers placed at more distal sites (Prox 1, Over IZ, and Dist). There were no significant differences, however, in SF thickness between accelerometer placement sites. In addition, the IZ had no effect on MMG amplitude and little effect on MMG MPF values. Abstract: The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported. The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle. Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis. Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Experiments were carried out to examine whether innervation zone (IZ) location remains stable at different levels of isometric contraction in the biceps brachii muscle (BB), and to determine how the proximity of the IZ affects common surface electromyography (sEMG) parameters. Twelve subjects performed maximal (MVC) and submaximal voluntary isometric contractions at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 75% of MVC. sEMG signals were recorded with a 13 rows×5 columns grid of electrodes from the short head of BB. The IZ shifted in the proximal direction by up to 2.4cm, depending upon the subject and electrode column. The mean shift of all the columns was 0.6±0.4cm (10% vs. 100% MVC, P <0.001). This shift biased the average values of mean frequency (+21.8±9.9Hz, P <0.001), root mean square (−0.16±0.15mV, P <0.05) and conduction velocity (−1.15±0.93m/s, P <0.01) in the channels immediately proximal to the IZ. The shift in IZ could be explained by shortening of the muscle fibers, and thus lengthening of the (distal) tendon due to increasing force. These results underline the importance of individual investigation of IZ locations before the placement of sEMG electrodes, even in isometric contractions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to use a wavelet-based signal processing technique to examine the influence of electrode placement over the innervation zone (IZ) on the shape of the electromyographic (EMG) frequency spectrum. Ten healthy males (mean±SD age=23.6±3.0years) performed isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors at 10%, 40%, 70%, and 100% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Surface EMG signals were detected simultaneously from the vastus lateralis with two bipolar electrode arrangements. One of the electrode arrangements had its center point located directly over the IZ, while the other arrangement had its center point distal to the IZ (i.e., 20mm away). All EMG signals were processed with a wavelet-based procedure. The results showed that for all isometric torque levels, the EMG signals from the distal electrode arrangement demonstrated greater total intensity values than those for the IZ arrangement for frequencies ranging from approximately 2 to 110Hz. There were no consistent differences, however, between the IZ and distal electrode arrangements for total EMG intensity values above 110Hz. Thus, these findings indicated that electrode placement over the IZ affected primarily the low-, rather than the high-frequency portion of the EMG frequency spectrum. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The spatial distributions of muscle innervation zone (IZ) and muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) were examined in nine healthy young male participants. High-density surface electromyography (EMG) was collected from the biceps brachii muscle when subjects performed isometric elbow flexions at 20% to 80% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). A total of 9498 samples of IZs were identified and CVs were calculated using the Radon transform. The center and width of IZ sample distribution were compared within four different force levels and six medial to lateral electrode column positions using repeated measures ANOVA and multiple comparison tests. Significant shifts of IZ center were observed in the medial columns (Columns 5, 6, and 7) compared with the lateral columns (Columns 3 and 4) (p < 0.05). Similarly, significant differences in the IZ width were found in Column 7 and 8 compared to Column 3 (p < 0.05). In contrast, muscle CV was unaffected by column position. Instead, muscle CV was faster at 40% and 80% MVC compared to 20% MVC (p < 0.05). The findings of this study add further insights into the physiological properties of the biceps brachii muscle. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of interelectrode distance (IED) over the estimated innervation zone (IZ) for the vastus lateralis muscle and normalization on the torque-related patterns of responses for electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) during concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eight men performed submaximal to maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors. Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously with two bipolar electrode arrangements in single differential configuration (20 and 40mm IEDs) placed over the estimated IZ for the vastus lateralis muscle and a third electrode arrangement in single differential configuration (20mm IED) placed distal to the estimated IZ. The results indicated that there were only a few (six of 90 statistical comparisons) significant (p <0.05) mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute EMG amplitude. There were no mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute or normalized EMG MPF values or normalized EMG amplitude for the three types of muscle actions. Thus, it may be possible to reduce the potential influence of the IZ on amplitude and spectral parameters of the EMG signal through normalization. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Objective: To determine, with more precision than in previous investigations, if the innervation zone (IZ) for the biceps brachii can move with increases in isometric torque, and if so, whether or not that movement is influenced by differences in joint angle. Methods: Twenty-three participants (mean age=21.7 years) performed isometric contractions of the forearm flexors at 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at three separate elbow joint angles (90, 120, and 150°). During each contraction, 16 channels of bipolar surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from the biceps brachii using a linear electrode array. For each joint angle, movement of the IZ with increases in torque was identified by a change in the EMG channel that was over the IZ. Results: For each joint angle, the IZ shifted proximally (2.3 channels) with increases in torque from 20 to 100% MVC. With an interelectrode distance of 2.5mm, this 2.3-channel shift reflects a 4.5–7.0mm movement of the IZ. Conclusion: The IZ shifts proximally 4.5–7.0mm with increases in isometric torque, independent of joint angle. Significance: These findings suggested that if isometric contractions are performed at different torque levels, the electrodes should be placed at least 7mm from the IZ. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purposes of this investigation were to examine the effects of electrode placement and innervation zone (IZ) location on: (a) the torque-related patterns of responses for absolute and normalized electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) and (b) the mean absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF values. In addition, the present study examined the variability between subjects for the location of the IZ for the vastus lateralis (VL). Eight men (mean±SD age=23.0±4.3yr) performed submaximal to maximal isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors. During each muscle action, fifteen channels of bipolar surface EMG signals were detected from the vastus lateralis using a linear electrode array aligned with the long axis of the muscle fibers. The results indicated that there were differences among channels 1–15 for the patterns of responses and mean values for absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF versus isometric torque. Thus, normalized EMG amplitude and MPF values from different individuals cannot be compared if the EMG signals were detected from different locations over the muscle. In addition, absolute and relative (to femur length) estimates of IZ location for the VL resulted in similar inter-subject variability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Multichannel surface electromyography has developed towards more channels and higher spatial resolution. This allows the study of multichannel electromyograms as images of the potential distribution on the skin. In this paper, a method that estimates the motion of the potential distribution using an optical-flow-based technique is introduced. The optical flow is a vector field that describes how images change with time. The aim of this study was to introduce a new method for innervation zone (IZ) localization and to evaluate its performance. The new method was compared with a method that uses the position of the lowest root-mean-square (RMS) value in an electrode array as an estimate of the IZ localization. Comparisons were made with both simulated signals and with recorded multichannel electromyogram signals. Simulations showed that the methods performed similarly for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and that the optical-flow-based method was superior for lower SNR. When the experimental signals were used, localization with the optical-flow-based method gave a mean absolute deviation of 2.4mm from the location given by an expert group. The lowest RMS method gave a significantly higher deviation (13.6mm). Due to the low computational complexity of the optical flow algorithm it is possible to get the estimations of the IZ localization in real time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of electrode placement over the estimated innervation zone (IZ) for the vastus lateralis, as well as proximal and distal to the estimated IZ, on the torque-related patterns for electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) during concentric and eccentric isokinetic muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eleven men performed randomly ordered, submaximal to maximal concentric and eccentric isokinetic muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors in 10% increments from 10 to 90% peak torque (PT). Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously from the vastus lateralis muscle with bipolar electrode arrangements placed over the estimated IZ, as well as proximal and distal to the estimated IZ. The results indicated that there were no consistent differences among the proximal, IZ, and distal electrode placement sites for the patterns of responses for absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF versus torque, or the mean absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF values. Thus, these findings suggested that during concentric and eccentric isokinetic muscle actions of the leg extensors, electrode placement over the estimated IZ for the vastus lateralis had no effect on the patterns of responses or mean values for absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF versus torque. Abstract: Empirical evidence is presented suggesting that the innervation zone of the brachial biceps shifts relative to recording electrodes with changes in joint angle. Myoelectric signal data were acquired from five subjects using a 16-channel linear electrode array, and analyzed to determine a reversal in signal propagation direction indicating innervation zone location. An analysis of the effect of joint angle changes on innervation zone location yielded statistically significant results (ANOVA, α =0.05, p <0.001) suggesting that the innervation zone moves between 5 and 30mm in a direction distal to the shoulder as the arm is extended, statistically independent of force level (ANOVA, α =0.05, p >0.2). Purpose: The aim of this work is to provide information about the degree of inter-subject uniformity of location of innervation zone (IZ) in 13 superficial muscles of the lower limb. The availability of such information will allow researchers to standardize and optimize their electrode positioning procedure and to obtain accurate and repeatable estimates of surface electromyography (sEMG) signal amplitude, spectral variables and muscle fiber conduction velocity. Methods: Surface EMG signals from gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, tensor faciae latae, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, vastus medialis obliquus, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, soleus, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscles of ten healthy male subjects aged between 25 and 34 years (average=29.2 years, S.D.=2.5 years) were recorded to assess individual IZ location and signal quality. Results: Tensor faciae latae, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis showed a high level of both signal quality and IZ location uniformity. In contrast, rectus femoris, gluteus medius and peroneus longus were found to show poor results for both indexes. Gluteus maximus, vastus medialis obliquus and tibialis anterior were found to show high signal quality but low IZ location uniformity. Finally, soleus muscle was found to show low signal quality but high IZ location uniformity. Conclusions: This study identifies optimal electrode sites for muscles in the lower extremity by providing a standard landmarking technique for the localization of the IZ of each muscle so that surface EMG electrodes can be properly positioned between the IZ and a tendon. In this review we describe the basic principles of operation of linear electrode arrays for the detection of surface EMG signals, together with their most relevant current applications. A linear array of electrodes is a system which detects surface EMG signals in a number of points located along a line. A spatial filter is usually placed in each point for signal detection, so that the recording of EMG signals with linear arrays corresponds to the sampling in one spatial direction of a spatially filtered version of the potential distribution over the skin. Linear arrays provide indications on motor unit (MU) anatomical properties, such as the locations of the innervation zones and tendons, and the fiber length. Such systems allow the investigation of the properties of the volume conductor and its effect on surface detected signals. Moreover, linear arrays allow to estimate muscle fiber conduction velocity with a very low standard deviation of estimation (of the order of 0.1–0.2 m/s), thus providing reliable indications on muscle fiber membrane properties and their changes in time (for example with fatigue or during treatment). Conduction velocity can be estimated from a signal epoch (global estimate) or at the single MU level. In the latter case, MU action potentials are identified from the interference EMG signals and conduction velocity is estimated for each detected potential. In this way it is possible, in certain conditions, to investigate single MU control and conduction properties with a completely non-invasive approach. Objectives: Advances in surface electromyography (sEMG) techniques provide a clear indication that refinement of electrode location relative to innervation zones (IZ) is required in order to optimise the accuracy, relevance and repeatability of the sEMG signals. The aim of this study was to identify the IZ for the sternocleidomastoid and anterior scalene muscles to provide guidelines for electrode positioning for future clinical and research applications.Methods: Eleven volunteer subjects participated in this study. Myoelectric signals were detected from the sternal and clavicular heads of the sternocleidomastoid and the anterior scalene muscles bilaterally using a linear array of 8 electrodes during isometric cervical flexion contractions. The signals were reviewed and the IZ(s) were identified, marked on the subjects'' skin and measurements were obtained relative to selected anatomical landmarks.Results: The position of the IZ lay consistently around the mid-point or in the superior portion of the muscles studied.Conclusions: Results suggest that electrodes should be positioned over the lower portion of the muscle and not the mid-point, which has been commonly used in previous studies. This study aimed to examine the redistribution of neuromuscular junctions or innervation zones (IZs) after spinal cord injuries (SCI). Fifteen able-bodied subjects and 15 subjects with SCI (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A to D), participated in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) signals were collected from the biceps brachii muscle by a customized linear electrode array when subjects generated maximal isometric voluntary contractions. The Radon transform was applied to detect the IZ locations in the multiple channel surface EMG signals which were differentiated between consecutive channels. The distribution of IZs was compared between the SCI and control groups using the student-t test. Statistical analysis disclosed a significantly wider range of IZs in the SCI group compared with the control group (SCI: 3.83 ± 1.32 IED, control: 2.83 ± 0. 87 IED, IED: inter-electrode distance, p < 0.05). No remarkable shifts of the center of the distribution were observed between the two groups (SCI: 9.23 ± 2.35 IED, control: 8.53 ± 2.33 IED, p = 0.42). Abstract: Traumas of the innervation zone (IZ) of the external anal sphincter (EAS), e.g. during delivery, can promote the development of faecal incontinence. Recently developed probes allow high-resolution detection of EMG signals from the EAS. The analysis of pelvic floor muscles by surface EMG (in particular, the estimation of the location of the IZ) has potential applications in the diagnosis and investigation of the mechanisms of incontinence. An automatic method (based on matched filter approach) for the estimation of the IZ distribution of EAS from surface EMG is discussed and tested using an analytical model of generation of EMG signals from sphincter muscles. Simulations are performed varying length of the fibres, thickness of the mucosa, position of the motor units, and force level. Different distributions of IZs are simulated. The performance of the proposed method in the estimation of the IZ distribution is affected by surface MUAP amplitude (as the estimation made by visual inspection), by mucosa thickness (performance decreases when fibre length is higher) and by different MU distributions. However, in general the method is able to identify the position of two IZ locations and can measure asymmetry of the IZ distribution.
