Understanding the preferences of old-age adults for their long-term caregivers can improve person-centred health care and the quality of long-term care (LTC). This study examines Chinese older adults' preferences for long-term caregivers. This is a cross-sectional study. A national representative discrete choice experiment (DCE) surveyed 2031 adults aged 50–70 across 12 provinces in China. Each DCE scenario described five attributes: type of caregivers, place of LTC, contents of LTC, out-of-pocket payments, and quality of life (QoL). Preferences and the marginal willingness to pay (WTP) were derived using mixed-logit and latent class models. Older adults displayed higher preferences for long-term caregivers who improve their QoL, incur lower out-of-pocket payments, and provide medical LTC services at home, with the maximum WTP of $22.832 per month. QoL was rated as the most important LTC factor, followed by the place of LTC and the type of caregivers. When the level of QoL improved from poor to good, respondents would be willing to pay $18.375 per month more (95% confidence interval: 16.858 to 20.137), and the uptake rate increased by 76.47%. There was preference heterogeneity among older people with different sex, education, family size, and knowledge of LTC insurance. QoL was the most important factor in older Chinese adults' preference for caregivers. Home care and medical care from formal caregivers was preferred by older adults. We recommend training family caregivers, raising older people's awareness of LTC insurance, and guiding policymakers in developing people-oriented LTC and a multi-level LTC system. Proton beam therapy (PBT) is one of the most advanced radiotherapy technologies, with growing evidence to support its use in specific clinical scenarios and exponential growth of demand and capacity worldwide over the past few decades. However, geographical inequalities persist in the distribution of PBT centres, which translate into variations in access and use of this technology. The aim of this work was to look at the factors that contribute to these inequalities, to help raise awareness among stakeholders, governments and policy makers. A literature search was conducted using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes (PICO) criteria. The same search strategy was run in Embase and Medline and identified 242 records, which were screened for manual review. Of these, 24 were deemed relevant and were included in this analysis. Most of the 24 publications included in this review originated from the USA (22/24) and involved paediatric patients, teenagers and young adults (61% for children and/or teenagers and young adults versus 39% for adults). The most reported indicator of disparity was socioeconomic status (16/24), followed by geographical location (13/24). All the studies evaluated in this review showed disparities in the access to PBT. As paediatric patients make up a significant proportion of the PBT-eligible patients, equity of access to PBT also raises ethical considerations. To explore (1) the services older adults use to address the barriers to food access they face and (2) how they found out about these services. Semistructured, basic descriptive qualitative in-person interviews. Senior center and participants' homes. A convenience sample of 24 older adults recruited from suburban and urban settings. Primarily Black females, living alone, and able to leave home without help. Financial and nonfinancial barriers to food access, awareness of services available. Codes were assigned to portions of the text in which participants described how they learned about a service. These codes were categorized into one of the 3 larger themes that emerged: (1) intentionally sought by the participant, (2) intentional outreach by the service, and (3) encounters in daily life and environment. Most connections to services were made through encounters in participants' daily life and environment; for example, word of mouth from family, friends or neighbors; connection through other services; referral from health care professionals; and seeing the service in their neighborhood. Robust social networks, medical screening, and referral may promote awareness of food assistance services. Future research and outreach should target those who are most isolated. Evaluate the delivery of a "family night" event to demonstrate Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) curriculum standards. Experiences beyond the classroom can apply multiple aspects of nutrition education to enhance students' behavioral capability and self-efficacy for future practice. Undergraduate students in a junior-level Nutrition Education and Counseling course within an ACEND accredited DPD. Student delivered a family night event at a campus-based child development center. Through intentional design, event delivery encompassed audience assessment, goal setting, theory application, message identification, handout development, developmentally appropriate activities, food tasting, and interpersonal communication with diverse audiences. Outcome evaluation aligned select ACEND Knowledge Requirements for Dietitians and Nutritionists (KRDN) to these event components: apply assessment of target audience educational and resource needs to program materials (KRDN 1.3); develop a handout including instructor assigned components (KRDN 2.1); engage with parents and children during event (KRDN 2.1); develop a culturally appropriate handout and activity (KRDN 2.6); develop education strategies in the form of a handout, activity, and food tasting (KRDN 3.2); convey messages and developmentally appropriate feeding suggestions (KRDN 3.3). Primary themes within evaluation included: 1) student enthusiasm to deliver the event; 2) challenges conveying feeding information; 3) the need to foster students' cultural awareness prior to resource development; 4) the need for example handouts demonstrating appropriate and inappropriate formatting; and 5) identification of additional areas of student learning for similar assignments (ie communication "soft skills", advertising programs, negotiation). Delivering a "family night" event allows undergraduate students to develop behavioral capability and self-efficacy for nutrition education. Training students on "soft skills" for communication with facility staff and participants; intentional assessment to establish cultural awareness; and prior role play can help assure a successful event which promotes positive feeding practices among participants. Previous meta-analyses have mainly focused on studies conducted in endemic fluorosis areas with relatively high fluoride concentrations. These are impoverished rural communities in China, India, and Iran, and the findings cannot be generalised to developed countries. Therefore, we investigated the association between fluoride concentrations relevant to community water fluoridation and children's cognition measured with IQ scores by synthesising effect sizes reported in observational studies. A previous meta-analysis and the National Toxicology Program database that included a search of multiple databases and the authors' search of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Mendeley provided the data. Cross-sectional and cohort studies examining the association between fluoride and children's cognition and intelligence scores were selected. Two reviewers abstracted data using standard procedures. We performed three meta-analyses to synthesise the effects using the random effects models. Eight studies of standardized mean difference in IQ scores from non-endemic fluorosis areas found no statistically significant difference between recommended and lower levels of fluoride (standardized mean difference = 0.07; 95% confidence interval: −0.02, 0.17; I 2 = 0%), and no significant fluctuation in IQ scores across the differences in fluoride concentrations by non-linear modeling with restricted cubic spline (P = 0.21). Meta-analyses of children's and maternal spot urinary fluoride associated pooled regression coefficients (Beta children = 0.16; 95% confidence interval: −0.40, 0.73; P = 0.57; I 2 = 0%, Beta maternal = −0.92; 95% CI: −3.29, 1.46; P = 0.45; I 2 = 72%) were not statistically significant. Further regression analysis by standardizing absolute mean IQ scores from lower fluoride areas did not show a relationship between F concentration and IQ scores (Model Likelihood-ratio test: P -value = 0.34.) These meta-analyses show that fluoride exposure relevant to community water fluoridation is not associated with lower IQ scores in children. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic necessitated the use of distance education, which sparked a technological transformation that was long overdue in higher education. The purpose of this narrative review is two-fold: to summarize the state of knowledge regarding distance education in nutrition and dietetics education over the past 30 years to inform recommendations for future education/research and implications for practice and to determine the influence that distance education has had on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of both nutrition and dietetics educators and their students. A narrative review of 822 publications yielded 25 that met the search criteria. In the scope of 30 years, the literature shows that attitudes and perceptions of distance education have changed as barriers to online access have diminished and the availability of online nutrition and dietetics courses and Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics-accredited distance education programs has expanded. However, whereas the limited results are promising, the paucity of large-sample research about the use of distance education in nutrition and dietetics education restricts educators' knowledge of and ability to evaluate the learning outcomes of distance programs and courses. Moreover, differences in how accreditors, government agencies, and institutions define distance education could have significant influence on funding and financial aid benefits for students and research. Objective: To assess gender differences in the decision-making process for treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA).Methods: A secondary analysis of a randomized trial was conducted (n = 193). Knowledge of OA and total knee replacement (TKR), decisional conflict, satisfaction with the decision-making process, treatment preference and TKR uptake 6 months later were compared by gender. Multivariate regression models were developed to identify gender-specific predictors.Results: Women showed less knowledge (MD = -7.68, 95% CI: -13.9, -1.46, p = 0.016), reported less satisfaction (MD = -6.95, 95% CI: -11.7, -2.23, p = 0.004) and gave more importance to avoiding surgery (U = 2.09, p = 0.019). In women, more importance attributed to the time needed to relieve symptoms significantly reduced the odds of surgery (OR = 0.76, p = 0.016).Conclusion: The provision of information and/or promotion of shared decision-making could be of lower quality in female patients, although other explanations such as differences in information needs or preference for involvement in decision-making cannot be ruled out with the current evidence. Given the study's limitations, especially regarding the sample size, further confirmation is needed.Practice Implications: A systematic, shared decision-making approach in consultation is needed to avoid potential gender-based biases. Introduction: As the first step in the HIV care continuum, timely diagnosis is central to reducing transmission of the virus and ending the HIV epidemic. Studies have shown that distance from a testing site is essential for ease of access to services and educational material. This study shows how location-allocation analysis can be used to improve allocation of HIV testing services utilizing existing publicly available data from 2015 to 2019 on HIV prevalence, testing site location, and factors related to HIV in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Methods: The ArcGIS Location-Allocation analytic tool was used to calculate locations for HIV testing sites using a method that minimizes the distance between demand-point locations and service facilities. ZIP code level demand was initially specified on the basis of the percentage of late HIV diagnoses and in a sensitivity analysis on the basis of a composite of multiple factors. Travel time and distance from demand to facilities determined the facility location allocation. This analysis was conducted from 2021 to 2022.Results: Compared with the 37 facilities located in 20 (43%) Philadelphia ZIP codes, the model proposed reallocating testing facilities to 37 (79%) ZIP codes using percent late diagnoses to define demand. On average, this would reduce distance to the facilities by 65% and travel time to the facilities by 56%. Results using the sensitivity analysis were similar.Conclusions: A wider distribution of HIV testing services across the city of Philadelphia may reduce distance and travel time to facilities, improve accessibility of testing, and in turn increase the percentage of people with knowledge of their status. Cultural intelligence is an important capacity related to effective functioning in intercultural contexts, but questions remain as to how international experience supports its development. This longitudinal study assessed how the four facets of cultural intelligence developed during a semester-long student exchange program with Australian (N = 203, age M = 20.94, 66.5% female) and French students (N = 232, age M = 20.72, 69.8% female). Participants completed measures before, during, and directly after their exchange experience. Longitudinal multilevel modelling results showed that exchange enhanced cognitive, metacognitive and motivational cultural intelligence for both Australian and French students, while behavioral cultural intelligence only increased in Australian students. Importantly, the identified changes were found to be linear for all cultural intelligence facets, with the exception of metacognitive cultural intelligence in the Australian sample, showing that increases in cultural intelligence occurred throughout the duration of the exchange experience. Neither cultural distance nor previous travel experience influenced the amount of cultural intelligence change that occurred. The findings confirm that university student exchange is a valuable tool for promoting the development of cultural intelligence, supporting graduates to acquire abilities relevant to a global work environment. Cognitive impairment is a well-documented predictor of transition to a full-threshold psychotic disorder amongst individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis. However, less is known about whether change in cognitive functioning differs between those who do and do not transition. Studies to date have not examined trajectories in intelligence constructs (e.g., acquired knowledge and fluid intelligence), which have demonstrated marked impairments in individuals with schizophrenia. This study aimed to examine intelligence trajectories using longitudinal data spanning an average of eight years, where some participants completed assessments over three time-points. Participants (N = 139) at UHR for psychosis completed the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) at each follow-up. Linear mixed-effects models mapped changes in WASI Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ) and T-scores on Vocabulary, Similarities, Block Design, and Matrix Reasoning subtests. The sample showed stable and improving trajectories for FSIQ and all subtests. There were no significant differences in trajectories between those who did and did not transition to psychosis and between individuals with good and poor functional outcomes. However, although not significant, the trajectories of the acquired knowledge subtests diverged between transitioned and non-transitioned individuals (β = -0.12, 95 % CI [-0.29, 0.05] for Vocabulary and β = -0.14, 95 % CI [-0.33, 0.05] for Similarities). Overall, there was no evidence for long-term deterioration in intelligence trajectories in this UHR sample. Future studies with a larger sample of transitioned participants may be needed to explore potential differences in intelligence trajectories between UHR transition groups and other non-psychosis outcomes. Perinatal loss is a traumatic event associated with a high risk of parents experiencing negative psychological outcomes. Despite most parents being in regular contact with midwives and nurses during the perinatal period, there is a lack of evidence which hampers these professionals from using effective psychosocial interventions with parents. This study aims to synthesise the existing evidence on the types of psychosocial interventions delivered by midwives/nurses for parents with perinatal bereavement, their impacts on bereaved parents' mental health and the experiences of midwives and nurses in delivering psychosocial interventions for parents experiencing perinatal loss. An integrative review of the literature. Whittemore and Knafl's five-stage integrative review framework guided this review. A systematic literature search of the Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL and ASSIA, Cochrane Library and ProQuest databases was conducted from inception to January 2023, with no language or geographical limiters set due to the paucity of research published in this subject area. Two researchers independently screened and reviewed each study's data extraction and methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute and Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. Results were analysed and synthesised using narrative synthesis. A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. From these, we identified nine types of psychosocial interventions for perinatal bereavement that can be delivered by midwives and nurses. The positive impacts of midwife/nurse-led psychosocial interventions on grief, anxiety, depression posttraumatic stress disorder and other psychosocial outcomes amongst parents experiencing perinatal loss have been demonstrated. In addition, we identified the useful components of these interventions and the experiences of midwives and nurses in delivering psychosocial interventions, thereby highlighting barriers such as lack of knowledge and skills, stressful working environments and inadequate emotional support. Our findings demonstrate that midwife/nurse-led psychosocial interventions have the potential to improve grief, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and other psychosocial outcomes for parents experiencing perinatal loss. Thus, future research should consider training, workload, time cost and emotional support for midwives/nurses when developing midwife/nurse-led psychosocial interventions for parents with perinatal loss. Loneliness and social isolation are associated with adverse health outcomes, especially within the older adult population, underlining the need for effective interventions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarize all available evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions for loneliness and social isolation, to map out their working mechanisms, and to give implications for policy and practice. Systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Older adults (≥65 years). A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL for studies quantitively or qualitatively assessing effects of interventions for loneliness and social isolation in older adults, following predefined selection criteria. Risk of bias as well as small study effects were assessed and, wherever appropriate, information about effect sizes of individual studies pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. Sources for between-study heterogeneity were explored using meta-regression. Of n = 2223 identified articles, n = 67 were eventually included for narrative synthesis. Significant intervention effects were reported for a proportion of studies (55.9% and 50.0% for loneliness and social isolation, respectively) and 57.6% of studies including a follow-up measure (n = 29) reported sustained intervention effects. Meta-analysis of n = 27 studies, representing n = 1756 participants, suggested a medium overall effect of loneliness interventions (d = −0.47; 95% CI, −0.62 to −0.32). Between-study heterogeneity was substantial and could not be explained by differences in study design, year of publication, outcome measures, intervention length, participant demographics, setting, baseline level of loneliness, or geographic location. However, non–technology-based interventions reported larger effect sizes on average (Δd = −0.35; 95% CI, −0.66 to −0.04; P =.029) and were more often significant. Qualitative assessment of potential intervention mechanisms resulted in 3 clusters of effective components: "promoting social contact," "transferring knowledge and skills," and "addressing social cognition". Interventions for loneliness and social isolation can generally be effective, although some unexplained between-study heterogeneity remains. Among the other Big Five personality traits, Openness to Experience has a less clear connection to psychopathology. Its inconsistent associations with different mental disorders suggest a complex relationship may exist at more specific levels of the trait. The present study investigated the role of the experiencing and intellectual subcomponents of Openness/Intellect in brooding (a known risk factor for depression and anxiety) and reflection. Participants (N = 1411) completed a measure of Openness to Experience and rumination. Consistent with our hypotheses, Openness was a positive predictor of brooding and reflection, whereas Intellect was a negative predictor of brooding. Our results are consistent with theoretical accounts of Openness and Intellect and suggest that the conditions afforded by Openness may lead to higher levels of both unconstructive (brooding) and constructive (reflection) types of rumination. The protective role of Intellect, in turn, may lead to lower levels of brooding. Social scientists have given relatively scant attention to the association between attractiveness and longevity. But attractiveness may convey underlying health, and it systematically structures critical social stratification processes. We evaluated these issues using the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS, N = 8386), a survey of Wisconsin high school graduates from 1957 which provided large samples of women and men observed until their death (or through their early 80s). In doing so, we utilized a meticulously constructed measure of facial attractiveness based on the independent ratings of high-school yearbook photographs. We used linked death information from the National Death Index-plus through 2022 and Cox proportional hazard models as well as standard life-table techniques. We found that the least attractive rated sextile of the sample had significantly higher hazards of mortality (HR: 1.168, p < 0.01) compared to the middle rated four sextiles of attractiveness. This finding remained robust to the inclusion of covariates describing high-school achievement, intelligence, family background, earnings as adults, as well as mental and physical health in middle adulthood. We also found that different specifications of the attractiveness measure consistently indicated no significant differences in the mortality hazard between highly attractive and average-looking people. Using life-table techniques, we next illustrated that among women in the least attractive sextile, at age 20 their life expectancy was nearly 2 years less than others'; among men in the least attractive sextile, it was nearly 1 year less at age 20. • Little is known about the association between facial attractiveness and longevity. • We analyze how attractiveness based on yearbook pictures is linked to longevity. • We find that the least attractive 1/6th had a significantly Higher Hazard of mortality. • The least attractive 1/6th of women lived almost 2 years less than others at 20. • The least attractive 1/6th of men lived almost 1 years less than others at 20. • A child and youth participatory model was developed, drawing on current best practice and evidence, to support the co-design of child and youth led service initiatives. • The model was trialled with young people who experienced marginalisation to understand their experiences of service engagement, support the development and testing of their ideas, and to support them as advocates for youth led initiatives. • The model also requires addressing issues of knowledge, capacity and culture within service organisations to increase responsiveness to child and youth engagement in service design and decision making. • The strengths and challenges of model implementation are discussed. The ReSPECT Project (Reconceptualising Services from the Perspectives of Children and Teens) was conducted in a disadvantaged urban community in Australia, with young people who experience marginalisation and who were involved with multiple service agencies across a range of service sectors. Its purpose was to work closely with young people to understand their experiences of service engagement, their perspectives on the service priorities for young people in their area, and to support them in the development, trial and implementation of a youth led service initiative. This paper describes the methodology employed with the young people, its theoretical underpinnings, and the challenges that needed to be overcome in the conduct of this research. Critical to the ReSPECT approach is relationship building and capacity development with local service providers. This aspect of our work is also briefly described in this paper. The ReSPECT approach makes a significant contribution to the participatory methodological literature. It is distinctive from existing approaches because (1) it gives equal attention to the sustained engagement and scaffolding of young people in the development of ideas, and to the capacity building of service providers addressing organisational culture and constraints; (2) it follows the process of service change from the conceptualisation of youth-led ideas, through to development, partnership, implementation and evaluation; and (3) it is designed for engagement with marginalised young people with diverse service experiences, whose voices are so often absent from participatory projects. • We investigated the computation of both scalar (including number and quantifier) and ad-hoc implicatures in Mandarin-speaking 4–8-year-old autistic verbal children. • Our results underscore the overall delayed implicature knowledge of autistic children at this stage of pragmatic development. • Autistic children's low sensitivity to the implicatures is related to their core ToM deficits. • Our data confirm the coherent pattern of the earlier acquisition of number over quantifier implicatures and illuminate the distinct mechanisms underlying the computation of scalar vs. ad-hoc implicatures. Mixed findings have been reported about the computation of scalar or/and ad-hoc implicatures in primarily school-age autistic verbal children and adolescents: while some studies reported their struggles with both implicatures, others observed their strengths in computing scalar implicatures. This study extends the previous investigation by testing the derivation of scalar (including both number and quantifier) and ad-hoc implicatures of a younger group of Mandarin-speaking autistic 4–8-year-olds; moreover, we assess the biological, linguistic, and cognitive factors affecting children's implicature acquisition. The participants included 22 4–8-year-old autistic verbal children (mean age = 67.64 months) and 19 typically developing (TD) children who did not significantly differ in age, receptive vocabulary, and non-verbal IQ. Both groups completed a computer-based Truth Value Judgment task, assessing their knowledge of scalar (involving the number 'three' and the quantifier 'some') and ad-hoc implicatures. We also examined whether their implicature computation was linked to age, receptive vocabulary, non-verbal IQ, and Theory of Mind (ToM). Compared with the TD controls, autistic children derived significantly fewer scalar and ad-hoc implicatures. Specifically, TD children successfully computed number and ad-hoc implicatures, contrasting to the bimodal distribution of their pragmatic vs. logical responses to quantifier implicatures. Though autistic children performed better with number implicatures slightly above the chance level, they had difficulties in computing quantifier and ad-hoc implicatures. Further, autistic children's knowledge of the number and ad-hoc implicatures was linked to their ToM skills. This study aims to evaluate the nursing students' informatics competency reported in the literature. Nursing informatics competency holds immense significance in the modern healthcare landscape, making it a vital requirement for nursing students before they graduate and embark on their professional careers. Nurses should integrate evidence-based nursing informatics (NI) into routine procedures to manage acute and chronic illnesses due to the increased complexity of the nursing profession and the healthcare systems. A systematic review. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE were searched till December 2023 for any relevant studies evaluating the nursing informatics competency among students. In this systematic review of 13 articles, the nursing informatics seems to be familiar among nursing students. Most of the included participants were generally competent, with an average total nursing informatics competency score of 3.4. In addition, they reported good scores for the clinical informatics role (Mean = 2.63), attitude (M= 3.7), basic computer knowledge and skills (M= 3.9), applied computer skills (M= 2.5), and wireless device skills (M= 3.2). However, these results were limited due to the use of structurally different assessment tools and their different cutoff values. Nursing informatics competency has a great impact on the quality of services provided by healthcare systems. It is affected by several factors, such as the student's previous computer experience and the curricular and extracurricular exposure to informatics knowledge and skills. The available literature lacks a precise judgment on the competency of nursing students. But it seems to vary from fair to good among them. So, it is recommended to include nursing informatics as an obligatory course rather than an elective in the nursing baccalaureate. Background: Prior studies have shown high heritability estimates regarding within-function transmission of neurocognition, both in healthy families and in families with schizophrenia but it remains an open question whether transmission from parents to offspring is function specific and whether the pattern is the same in healthy families and families with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. We aimed to characterize the transmission of intelligence, processing speed, and verbal working memory functions from both biological parents to their 7-year-old offspring in families with parental schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and population-based control parents.Methods: The population-based cohort consists of 7-year-old children with one parent diagnosed with schizophrenia (n = 186), bipolar disorder (n = 114), and of parents without schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (n = 192). Children and both parents were assessed using identical, age-relevant neurocognitive tests of intelligence, verbal working memory, and processing speed.Results: In multiple regression analyses children's intelligence, verbal working memory, and processing speed scores were significantly associated with the corresponding parental cognitive function score. All associations from parents to offspring across functions were non-significant. No significant parental cognitive function by group interaction was observed.Conclusion: Transmissions of intelligence, processing speed, and verbal working memory from parents to offspring are function specific. Emotion recognition using Electroencephalography (EEG) is a convenient and reliable technique. EEG based emotion detection study can find its application in various fields such as defense, aerospace, medical, and many more. This analysis helps to understand the emotional state of mind. There are two approaches to study EEG analysis known as subject dependent and independent. In this paper, Modified Differential Entropy (MD-DE) feature extractor is proposed to detect nonlinearity and non-Gaussianity of the EEG signal. The paper adopts both approaches by conducting an EEG analysis on own generated database named as 'IDEA- Intellect Database for Emotion Analysis' on 14 subjects. In this work, bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network and multilayer perceptron (MLP) network is used to classify emotional state of mind of the subjects. On the 'IDEA' database, subject dependent average accuracy achieved is in the order of 98.5% and for subject independent, 88.57%. To reaffirm the improvement in accuracy level, a new approach of Modified Differential Entropy and BiLSTM network is applied on the openly available SEED and DEAP database as well. Objective: In the past, it was believed that unilateral hearing loss has a minimal impact on the speech and language development in children. However, several studies have suggested that some school-age children with unilateral hearing loss have learning impairments in language. In the present study, we first examined whether preschool-age children with unilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss (UHL) have delays in the development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence. In the follow-up study, we tested the children again after school admission. The objective of the present study was to reveal the development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence from preschool to school years in children with UHL.Methods: Fifteen Japanese preschool-age children with UHL and a control group of 20 age-matched Japanese children with bilateral normal hearing (NH), who were examined because articulation disorder was suspected, were enrolled in this study. The development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence was evaluated using the Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PVT-R) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale, respectively. The present retrospective study was approved by the Committee for Medical Ethics of Tokushima University Hospital (#3801).Results: The scaled score (SS) of the PVT-R and verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ)/verbal comprehension index (VCI), but not performance intelligence quotient/perceptual reasoning index in children with UHL were significantly lower than those in the control children with NH at preschool-age. The SS of the PVT-R and VIQ/VCI in children with UHL significantly improved after school admission. In the subgroup analysis, the SS of the PVT-R in the lower receptive vocabulary group of children with UHL at preschool-age was significantly increased after school admission, but the SS in the normal and higher receptive vocabulary group of children with UHL at preschool-age were still around the standardized mean of SS after school admission.Conclusion: These findings suggest that the development of receptive vocabulary and verbal intelligence was delayed in preschool-age children with UHL and that most of them caught up to exhibit normal language ability after school admission. An ageing population and increasing chronicity of illness will likely contribute to increasing presentations to the emergency department (ED) by patients at the end-of-life (EOL). This study aimed to identify the self-reported EOL care practices of emergency care nurses and the factors influencing EOL care. An online survey was distributed to Australian emergency care nurses in August, 2020. Statistical analyses were undertaken to identify the most frequently undertaken EOL practices and factors influencing practice. There were 178 responses to the survey (response rate 11.3%). The most frequently reported EOL practices were environmental modification (M =4.4/5, SD =0.4) and information sharing practices (M =4.4/5, SD =0.4). Emotional support practices were the least frequently reported practices by emergency care nurses (M =3.6/5, SD =0.9). Participants reported a lack of resources (M =2.4/5, SD =0.8) and opportunities to gain end-of-life care knowledge (M =2.9/5, SD =0.9). However, a generally positive attitude towards EOL care was indicated as participants reported strong agreement to palliative values (M =4.6/5, SD =0.4). Results of this study suggest that most frequently reported EOL care practices of emergency care nurses require the least emotional engagement. Perception of self and others in culturally diverse teams is crucial to help members navigate better in their professional world. However, studies have demonstrated that self-reports may be distorted by self-protecting motives and response biases. In a large-scale analysis (560 samples and 2800 reviews), we investigated if perception reports are inflated and positively evaluated for self in culturally diverse teams. Moreover, we identified the cultural intelligence (CQ) attributes manifesting the aspects, which an individual takes into consideration when perceiving self and others, and explored whether these attributes were the same in both cases. Furthermore, from the shared experiences of members in culturally diverse teams, we tried to determine whether self-reports and other perception reports can serve as useful predictors in eliminating cultural conflicts. This paper reports on the results of three studies that take key steps toward developing and validating a survey instrument to assess the readiness of individuals who are about to sojourn abroad – the Sojourn Readiness Assessment (SRA). The first study presents the development of 20 items to measure three readiness dimensions (knowledge, motivation, and anxiety) and the results of an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) performed on responses from 336 students about to study abroad. The EFA results led us to drop 10 items and one dimension (knowledge). In the second study, we administered a second 10-item version of the SRA to 154 students and ran a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), which confirmed the two-factor structure and further led us to drop two more items. In the third study, we translated the survey to Chinese and administered it to 136 Chinese students who were preparing to come to the U.S. The two-factor structure was confirmed through CFA for the Chinese version of the instrument. The three studies provide initial validity evidence for the Sojourn Readiness Assessment instrument. The need for further studies and some potential uses of the instrument are also discussed. Second generation individuals (SGIs) represent an increasingly important share of the growing European population. Most literature focuses on the difficulties experienced by SGIs, risking reinforcing popular constructions of SGIs as a problematic group. Examining the potentials of SGIs may help to create a more balanced representation of their social reality and highlight opportunities inherent in multi-ethnic societies. In this paper we suggest that SGIs upbringing amongst multiple cultures may, under certain conditions, favour their developing strong intercultural competence (IC), a vital resource in contemporary, highly diverse societies. Following a literature review, we highlight that the IC of SGIs remains largely unexplored and there is a need for further research to investigate its features and the factors fostering and hindering its development. We begin by defining IC and the approach we adopt to view the construct, and by characterizing SGIs and the main critical implications and potentials of their growing up within multiple cultural environments. Subsequently we unite the contributions of migration studies and the body of work on IC in order to explain the processes by which SGIs likely develop IC. We propose the need for investigation of the IC of SGIs, making the case that research on IC should acknowledge the distinctiveness of SGIs experience and therefore utilize specific conceptual and methodological tools to explore the features and development processes of their IC. Context: Expectations about the future (future expectancies) are important determinants of psychological well-being among cancer patients, but the strategies patients use to maintain positive and cope with negative expectancies are incompletely understood.Objectives: To obtain preliminary evidence on the potential role of one strategy for managing future expectancies: the adoption of "epistemic beliefs" in fundamental limits to medical knowledge.Methods: A sample of 1307 primarily advanced-stage cancer patients participating in a genomic tumor testing study in community oncology practices completed measures of epistemic beliefs, positive future expectancies, and mental and physical health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Descriptive and linear regression analyses were conducted to assess the relationships between these factors and test two hypotheses: 1) epistemic beliefs affirming fundamental limits to medical knowledge ("fallibilistic epistemic beliefs") are associated with positive future expectancies and mental HRQOL, and 2) positive future expectancies mediate this association.Results: Participants reported relatively high beliefs in limits to medical knowledge (M = 2.94, s.d.=.67) and positive future expectancies (M = 3.01, s.d.=.62) (range 0-4), and relatively low mental and physical HRQOL. Consistent with hypotheses, fallibilistic epistemic beliefs were associated with positive future expectancies (b = 0.11, SE=.03, P< 0.001) and greater mental HRQOL (b = 0.99, SE=.34, P = 0.004); positive expectancies also mediated the association between epistemic beliefs and mental HRQOL (Sobel Z=4.27, P<0.001).Conclusions: Epistemic beliefs in limits to medical knowledge are associated with positive future expectancies and greater mental HRQOL; positive expectancies mediate the association between epistemic beliefs and HRQOL. To assess facilitators and barriers to participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and estimate foregone federal funds because of CACFP underuse. An online survey of food service practices and experiences with CACFP among Connecticut-based licensed child care centers (n = 231). Serving meals and the center's nonprofit status predicted CACFP participation. The most common challenge among participants was collecting family income eligibility. Streamlining paperwork (mentioned by 44% of respondents) and funding for nonfood, administrative costs (40%) were recommended facilitators to increase CACFP uptake. Nonparticipating centers had limited knowledge about the program and its eligibility. Foregone federal funding due to CACFP underuse among eligible Connecticut centers was estimated at $30.7 million in 2019, suggesting that 20,300 young children from low-income areas missed out on CACFP-subsidized food. Objective: The revised Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT2) is the instrument that is the most widely used for measuring diabetes knowledge; nevertheless, its structural validity has never been evaluated. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the DKT2.Methods: This study performed a secondary data analysis of people with diabetes recruited at university hospitals. Rasch analysis was used.Results: One item in the 14-item DKT2 measuring general diabetes knowledge exhibited a poor-fit, and so it was eliminated. The person-item map showed that items of greater difficulty need to be added to the instrument. The principal-components analysis of residuals revealed a unidimensional structure. The person reliability was 0.50, with a person separation index of 1.01. Measurement invariance was not satisfied for items 11 and 2 according to gender and age.Conclusions: The unidimensional structure of the 13-item DKT2 demonstrated poor person reliability and a low person separation index. Females and elderly persons found it more difficult to respond to items 11 and 2, respectively.Practice Implications: Careful consideration is necessary when using the 13-item DKT2 in practice and research. Plants have been used for a long time in traditional medicine to treat many diseases. The genus Prangos belongs to the Apiaceae family and has various medicinal and aromatic species. Since ancient times, Prangos species have been employed extensively in traditional medicine for different purposes and are especially popular for their aphrodisiac effects. The goal of this paper is to represent a systematic review of the species in the genus Prangos , including their botanical characteristics, uses in traditional medicine, phytochemical constituents, the composition of the essential oils produced, and the biological properties. The articles regarding traditional uses and bioactivities of Prangos species were evaluated using electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. Use of the World Flora Online (WFO) - The Plant List, The International Plant Names Index, the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (2024), and ChemDraw Professional helped complete this compilation. Phytochemical investigations have indicated that coumarins are characteristic constituents of Prangos species, especially prenylated simple coumarins and furanocoumarins, and also flavonoids, terpenoids, and phytosterols occur in this genus. In addition, the essential oils of these plants have been examined. The biological properties of the Prangos species seem worthy of further investigation. Also, some information about the toxicity of these species and their use as ingredients in food products is presented. This review highlights the evaluation of traditional knowledge, phytochemical profiles, biological activities, and potential uses of Prangos species as foods and spices. Many pharmacological activities have been performed related to their traditional uses, but frequently, the exact mechanism of action remains scientifically unproven. The goal of this study was to evaluate changes in knowledge, attitudes, and other key suicide prevention issues for substance use disorder (SUD) counselors trained to administer the Preventing Addiction Related Suicide (PARS) module as part of a large-scale clinical trial. PARS is a 3-hour, PowerPoint based intervention designed with and for community SUD agencies for their Intensive Outpatient (IOP) group therapy programs. A previous randomized study of 906 patients from 15 community SUD sites showed positive changes in patients' suicide prevention knowledge, attitudes, and help seeking. Counselor participants completed measures of knowledge and attitudes about suicide and their confidence treating suicidal patients at each step of a large, stepped wedge cluster randomized trial of PARS, including after the final step. Data analysis compared scores in steps prior to counselors' training in PARS with scores in the steps following counselors' PARS training. A total of 126 counselors participated in the study (89 % of those approached; 89–92 % retention across follow-up). Evaluation of both PARS efficacy and the PARS training by SUD counselors was highly rated. Counselor scores after receiving PARS training (vs. scores prior to PARS training) showed greater suicide knowledge, less maladaptive attitudes about suicide, and greater confidence in working with suicidal patients. Based on this rigorous test of PARS training for SUD counselors working in community SUD intensive outpatient programs, PARS training, as well as doing the PARS intervention, was rated as highly effective and acceptable. The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on systemic issues plaguing care (nursing) homes, from staff shortages to substandard healthcare. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including robots and chatbots, have been proposed as solutions to such issues. Yet, socio-ethical concerns about the implications of AI for health and care practices have also been growing among researchers and practitioners. At a time of AI promise and concern, it is critical to understand how those who develop and implement these technologies perceive their use and impact in care homes. Combining a sociological approach to trust with Annemarie Mol's logic of care and Jeanette Pol's concept of fitting , we draw on 18 semi-structured interviews with care staff, advocates, and AI developers to explore notions of human-AI care. Our findings show positive perceptions and experiences of AI in care homes, but also ambivalence. While integrative care incorporating humans and technology was salient across interviewees, we also identified experiential, contextual, and knowledge divides between AI developers and care staff. For example, developers lacked experiential knowledge of care homes' daily functioning and constraints, influencing how they designed AI. Care staff demonstrated limited experiential knowledge of AI or more critical views about contexts of use, affecting their trust in these technologies. Different understandings of 'good care' were evident, too: 'warm' care was sometimes linked to human care and 'cold' care to technology. Sexual harassment in secondary school is common but only recently acknowledged as a widespread problem in the United Kingdom. There is limited research on how schools respond to incidents of sexual harassment. The aim of this study was to understand how school systems shape the dynamics of disclosure, reporting and handling of sexual harassment in school (including behaviours, processes, norms), and to identify opportunities for effecting systems change. We used participatory systems mapping to elicit school stakeholders' perspectives on systems factors and their connections. Researchers built the map based on in-person workshops with students (n = 18) and staff (n = 4) from three schools in Scotland. Survey data (n = 638 students; n = 119 staff) was used to augment participant perspectives. The map was validated via three workshops (two online, one in-person) involving students and staff from seven schools. The final map (causal loop diagram) represents a hypothesised system of 25 causally connected factors and three feedback loops shaping the disclosure, reporting and handling of sexual harassment. We grouped these factors into four interlinked themes: 1] Knowledge and confidence; 2] Trust in reporting system and processes; 3] Communication, confidentiality and safeguarding; and, 4] Prioritisation of sexual harassment. This study highlights the interconnectedness of factors shaping disclosure, reporting and handling of sexual harassment within secondary schools. • Mediating effect of digital parenting skills between parent–child time and parent–child relationship were examined. • Negative role modeling and digital negligence are negatively associated with the parent–child relationship. • Parents' efficient use of and protection from risks from technology affects the parent–child relationship positively. The parent–child relationship was extensively reshaped during the infusion of digital technologies into families' daily lives. In this context, this research aims to investigate the relationship between the parent's time spent with the child and the parent–child relationship when digital parenting awareness including negative and positive roles is taken into consideration. A cross-sectional survey research method was employed. The data was collected by demographic information form, Child-parent Relationship, and Digital Parental Awareness scales. The data was analyzed from 285 parents with 3–6 years old children. In order to test the hypotheses, the Hayes-Process model was employed to determine the mediating effects of sub-dimensions of digital parental awareness between parent's time spent with the child and the parent–child relationship. The results revealed that being a negative digital role model, digital negligence, parents' effective use of technology, and protection from digital risks partially mediate the link between parent–child time and their relationship. An increase in negative role modeling and digital negligence are associated with a decrease in the positive parent–child relationship. The childhood and adolescence of transgender and gender diverse children and young people (trans children) is contested in many areas, such as media, education, health, and increasingly in the political sphere. Parents and carers of trans children navigate services and societal relations in their journey to affirm their children, from happy childhood to trans adults. This paper reports on the accounts of parents of trans children in Australia. Semi-structured interviews with 18 parents of 15 trans children in four states were analysed to understand the journey holistically, and interactions with services and institutions on this journey. Children ranged in current age from 8 to 21 years, and were 2 to 16 years when they first expressed their trans identity. These journeys highlight moments of gender euphoria, and points of both positive and negative interactions with a range of services such as GPs, specialist healthcare, trans healthcare, schools, foster care, government records, and sporting environments. This research demonstrates that parents have a collective body of knowledge on supporting and affirming trans children that should be drawn on to inform child and youth services. The process for developing clinical practice guidelines in medicine has changed dramatically over time. Previously, small groups of clinicians crafted clinical practice guidelines based on their professional expertise, but guideline developers must increasingly consider patients' lay expertise, global expertise, and principles of evidence-based medicine. This article analyzes how the World Professional Association for Transgender Health grappled with diverse forms of expertise and evidence-based medicine in the process of creating its "Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People, Version 8" (hereafter, SOC-8), a prominent set of clinical practice guidelines in transgender medicine. Analysis is based on 83 interviews with clinicians, patients, and activists in the U.S. and Thailand between 2019 and 2021, as well as observation of transgender health conferences and content analysis of written materials. I find that despite the ostensible goal of incorporating more diverse expertise in this version of the guidelines, the SOC-8 ultimately reproduced traditional knowledge hierarchies in science and medicine in which the lay expertise of transgender and gender non-conforming patients and expertise from the Global South remain marginalized. I attribute this re-marginalization to the regulatory objectivity enacted in the SOC-8 revision process, which re-legitimized professional expertise, established no formal infrastructure for ensuring the equal participation of Global South stakeholders, and permitted limited inclusion of lay expertise from transgender and gender non-conforming people with relatively high levels of privilege (according to race, education, and other social statuses). A growth mindset is one's belief that intelligence is malleable. Extensive research has shown that a growth mindset can enhance students' academic performance. However, its mechanism on students' digital reading performance has been little explored. This study examined the correlation between perceptions of teachers' and parents' process feedback and adolescents' growth mindsets and the relationships among feedback, a growth mindset, and digital reading performance. Data on 250,912 fifteen-year-old students from 32 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 were drawn. The data were analyzed through the use of multilevel mediation. The results showed that in most countries, perceptions of teachers' and parents' process feedback used positively predict adolescents' growth mindsets, which in turn positively predict digital reading performance and mediate the relationship between perceptions of feedback and reading performance. Educators and parents should intentionally integrate process-oriented factors into their feedback to help students realize their academic potential. Research emphasizes the relevance of mindsets for SRL and academic achievement. This paper reports three studies that aim to detect profiles of mindsets about SRL and intelligence, examine their relationship with students' SRL, study-related beliefs, and academic achievement, and replicate the findings across samples. Participants were N total = 633 university students, with N Study1 = 254, N Study2 = 187, and N Study3 = 192. LPAs were run to identify mindset profiles, and Mplus' auxiliary (BCH) function was applied to examine mean differences across profiles. All three studies identified the mindset profiles "Entity-Theory", "Balanced-Theory", and "SRL-Theory". The analyses revealed an SRL-Theory advantage regarding SRL, study-related beliefs, and academic achievement. These are the first studies to explore mindset profiles based on mindsets about SRL and intelligence. In recent years, university students have reported increased symptoms of stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact their mental well-being and academic performance. However, many students do not seek or receive support for these challenges. With recent technological advances in intelligent agents and their expanding capabilities, there is a potential for intelligent agents to extend and complement mental health care interventions and enhance access to care. Recognizing that there are many further steps to developing user-centred evidence-based approaches for mental health challenges, as a first step to developing effective interventions using intelligent agents, it is important to identify design elements and functionalities that are perceived as engaging and useful by students. In this paper, we present the findings of an online survey with 1054 undergraduate students to explore students' perceptions of, and preferences for, using different types of intelligent agents (e.g., virtual agents, social robots, etc.) to support their mental well-being, specifically to cope with feelings of stress and anxiety in social situations typically encountered within a university context (e.g., engaging in a group discussion, delivering presentations, expressing opinions, etc.). Students were asked to complete a questionnaire to explore their experience of stress and anxiety in the university context, as well as their perceptions of, and preferences for using different intelligent agents as assistive tools to cope with such feelings. • There is increasing interest in engaging parents with lived expertise in informing child welfare services. • Parent partners may be in a unique position to provide insight into child welfare services, such as a coaching program for child welfare supervisors. • Parent partners identified three key recommendations to guide the coaching program, focused on understanding parent context, activating family engagement, and bridging the gap between coaching program principles and child welfare practice. • The process for integrating parent voice into the coaching program is described in detail. Increasingly, the child welfare system is acknowledging the importance of incorporating parent voice and expertise into changes in child welfare practice, policy, and research; however, there is limited knowledge on how to incorporate parents' expertise into program-level change. This study sought input from parent partners on the shared principles of a statewide coaching program for child welfare supervisors. Two focus groups were conducted, an initial focus group (n = 17) and a member checking focus group (n = 14). Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings included three key themes: (a) understand parent context, (b) activate engagement, and (c) bridge principles and practice. To test whether public knowledge and confidence in one's understanding of the local restrictions, motivation to adhere to local restrictions, and self-reported behaviour (going out for exercise, to work, socially) differed according to tier level. Cross-sectional, nationally representative, online survey of 1728 participants living in England (data collection: 26 to 28 October 2020). We conducted logistic regression analyses to investigate whether knowledge of restrictions, confidence in knowledge of restrictions, motivation to adhere to restrictions, and self-reported behaviour were associated with personal characteristics and tier. Between 81% (tier 2) and 89% (tier 3) of participants correctly identified which tier they lived in. Knowledge of specific restrictions was variable. 73% were confident that they understood which tier was in place in their local area, whereas 71% were confident they understood the guidance in their local area. Confidence was associated with being older and living in a less deprived area. 73% were motivated to adhere to restrictions in their local area. Motivation was associated with being female and older. People living in tiers with greater restrictions were less likely to report going out to meet people from another household socially; reported rates of going out for exercise and for work did not differ. Although recognition of local tier level was high, knowledge of specific guidance for tiers was variable. There was some indication that nuanced guidance (e.g. behaviour allowed in some settings but not others) was more poorly understood than guidance which was absolute (i.e. behaviour is either allowed or not allowed). Objective: To summarize the current state of the research literature on nonverbal learning disability (NVLD), including criteria used to define NVLD in research contexts and the quality of the extant research; and to determine what research can tell us about ways in which NVLD is distinct from DSM neurodevelopmental disorders and typical development.Method: A systematic search of 7 databases was conducted to identify research on NVLD published through February 2019. Criteria used to define NVLD were extracted from identified studies and sorted by category. Each study was assessed for risk of bias and rated "good," "fair," or "poor;" findings from studies rated good or fair were summarized.Results: A total of 61 articles (63 studies) met inclusion criteria. There was great heterogeneity in the criteria used to define NVLD. Deficits in visuospatial ability/intelligence was the most common criterion used, followed by discrepancy between verbal and nonverbal intelligence (VIQ>PIQ split of 10 or greater). All studies were cross-sectional and most included small, poorly described samples. Most studies focused on children and young adolescents. Eight studies were rated as good, 42 as fair, and 13 as poor. Review of results from the 50 good or fair studies suggest that there is sufficient evidence that youths with NVLD (as defined by significant deficits in visuospatial abilities) can be clearly differentiated from their typically developing peers, those with verbal learning disorders, and from other clinical groups (eg, individuals with high functioning autism).Conclusion: A standard set of criteria for determining an NVLD diagnosis would greatly improve research studies and the possibility of inclusion in the DSM and the International Classification of Diseases. It is suggested that Jumping To Conclusions (JTC) reasoning bias might contribute to the distortion of external reality. However, the association between psychotic manifestations and JTC is obscure, especially if general intelligence is considered as a mediator. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between severity, early clinical improvement and remission of symptoms in First Episode Psychosis (FEP) with JTC as an explanatory factor. One hundred seventy-one FEP individuals were evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and one month after treatment initiation. Clinical improvement was ascribed as symptom change one-month post-baseline measurements. Symptomatic remission was assessed with the Andreasen severity criteria and JTC with the Beads Task, operationalized through Draws To Decision (DTD) (the lower the number of DTD, the higher the JTC bias). Regarding symptoms severity, total psychotic, total positive psychotic, and hallucinations-item PANSS scores showed a negative association with JTC after controlling for IQ. Regarding early clinical improvement, the association with JTC was non-significant. No significant association was detected between one month remission status of FEP and JTC. Our findings indicate that severity of positive symptoms is not associated with hastiness in decision-making, but rather with a heightened conservatism in terms of increased data gathering. Objective: To develop and validate a new measure of cancer knowledge for members of the general population who have never been diagnosed with cancer.Methods: Initially, 20 items were generated to measure cancer knowledge. After expert refinement and cognitive interviews, 11 items remained and were completed by 1,076 adults with no history of cancer. Responses were assessed using an item response theory (IRT) approach and differential item functioning.Results: Items were analyzed using a two-parameter logistic IRT model. Two items with tetrachoric correlation coefficients>0.8 and one item with a discrimination parameter>2.0 were excluded. The final eight items demonstrated a good range of discrimination (1.13 to 1.86) and difficulty (-1.11 to 0.85). No meaningful differential item functioning by participant attributes was detected for these eight items.Conclusion: The Cancer Knowledge Scale appears to be a reliable and valid measure for the general population.Practice Implications: The eight-item scale could be used to assess the effects of psychoeducational programs, including those on cancer knowledge, for members of the general population with no cancer history. Background Maternal intake of several nutrients during pregnancy is linked to offspring cognition. The relation between maternal dietary patterns and offspring cognition is less established. Objectives We aimed to examine associations of maternal diet quality during pregnancy with child cognition and behavior. Methods Among 1580 mother–child pairs in Project Viva, a prospective prebirth cohort, we assessed maternal diet during pregnancy using FFQs and evaluated diet quality using versions modified for pregnancy of the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS-P) and Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI-P). Child cognitive and behavioral outcomes were assessed using standardized tests and questionnaires at infancy and in early and mid-childhood. We conducted multivariable linear regression analyses. Results Mothers were predominantly white, college-educated, and nonsmokers. After adjustment for child age and sex and maternal sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, maternal high (6–9) compared with low (0–3) MDS-P during pregnancy was associated with higher child Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (KBIT-II) nonverbal (mean difference for first trimester: 4.54; 95% CI: 1.53, 7.56) and verbal scores (3.78; 95% CI: 1.37, 6.19) and lower Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) Metacognition Index (−1.76; 95% CI: −3.25, −0.27), indicating better intelligence and fewer metacognition problems in mid-childhood. Maternal Q4 compared with Q1 AHEI-P during pregnancy was associated with higher Wide Range Assessment of Visual Motor Abilities matching scores in early childhood (mean difference for first trimester: 2.79; 95% CI: 0.55, 5.04) and higher KBIT-II verbal scores (2.59; 95% CI: 0.13, 5.04) and lower BRIEF Global Executive Composite scores in mid-childhood (−1.61; 95% CI: −3.20, −0.01), indicating better visual spatial skills, verbal intelligence, and executive function. Conclusions Maternal intake of a better-quality diet during pregnancy was associated with better visual spatial skills in the offspring at early childhood and with better intelligence and executive function in the offspring at mid-childhood. Objective: It is unclear if pediatric executive dysfunction assessed only with cognitive tasks predicts clinically relevant outcomes independently of psychiatric diagnoses. This study tested the stability and validity of a task-based classification of executive function.Method: A total of 2,207 individuals (6-17 years old) from the Brazilian High-Risk Cohort Study participated in this study (1,930 at baseline, 1,532 at follow-up). Executive function was measured using tests of working memory and inhibitory control. Dichotomized age- and sex-standardized performances were used as input in latent class analysis and receiver operating curves to create an executive dysfunction classification (EDC). The study tested EDC's stability over time, association with symptoms, functional impairment, a polymorphism in the CADM2 gene, polygenic risk scores (PRS), and brain structure. Analyses covaried for age, sex, social class, IQ, and psychiatric diagnoses.Results: EDC at baseline predicted itself at follow-up (odds ratio [OR] = 5.11; 95% CI 3.41-7.64). Participants in the EDC reported symptoms spanning several domains of psychopathology and exhibited impairment in multiple settings, including more adverse school events (OR = 2.530; 95% CI 1.838-3.483). Children in the EDC presented higher attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and lower educational attainment PRS at baseline; higher schizophrenia PRS at follow-up; and lower chances of presenting a polymorphism in a gene previously linked to high performance in executive function (CADM2 gene). They also exhibited smaller intracranial volumes and smaller bilateral cortical surface areas in several brain regions.Conclusion: Task-based executive dysfunction is associated with several validators, independently of psychiatric diagnoses and intelligence.
