Aluminium titanium oxynitrides were studied as candidate materials for high temperature absorbers in solar selective coatings due to their excellent stability and their tuneable optical behaviour. A set of individual Al y Ti 1−y (O x N 1−x ) layers with different oxygen content was prepared by cathodic vacuum arc (CVA) deposition. The composition, morphology, phase structure and microstructure of the films were characterized by elastic recoil detection (ERD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. An fcc phase structure is found in a broad compositional range of Al y Ti 1−y (O x N 1−x ). Simultaneously, sample microstructure and morphology undergo systematic changes from a columnar growth to the development of a heterogeneous structure with spherical nanoparticle inclusions when the oxygen concentration is increased. The optical properties were determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry and UV–Vis–NIR and FTIR spectrophotometry. A comprehensive analysis of the film properties allowed an accurate modelling of the optical constants of the Al y Ti 1−y (O x N 1−x ) in the whole wavelength range of solar interest (from 190 nm to 25 µm). It points to a transition from metallic to dielectric behaviour with increasing oxygen content. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the optical properties of these Al y Ti 1−y (O x N 1−x ) deposited films can be controlled in a wide range from metallic to dielectric character by adjusting the oxygen concentration, opening a huge range of possibilities for the design of solar selective coatings (SSC) based on this material. Complete SSC, including a TiN layer as IR reflector, were designed by applying optical simulations, obtaining excellent optical selective properties of α = 94.0% and ε RT = 4.8%. Solar selective coatings based on carbon transition metal carbide nanocomposite absorber layers were designed. Pulsed filtered cathodic arc was used for depositing amorphous carbon:metal carbide (a-C:MeC, Me = V, Mo) thin films. Composition and structure of the samples were characterized by ion beam analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The optical properties were determined by ellipsometry and spectrophotometry. Three effective medium approximations (EMA), namely Maxwell-Garnett, Bruggeman, and Bergman, were applied to simulate the optical behaviour of the nanocomposite thin films. Excellent agreement was achieved between simulated and measured reflectance spectra in the entire wavelength range by using the Bergman approach, where in-depth knowledge of the nanocomposite thin film microstructure is included. The reflectance is shown to be a function of the metal carbide volume fraction and its degree of percolation, but not dependent on whether the nanocomposite microstructure is homogeneous or a self-organized multilayer. Solar selective coatings based on an optimized a-C:MeC absorber layer were designed exhibiting a maximum solar absorptance of 96% and a low thermal emittance of ~5% and 15% at 25 and 600 °C, respectively. The durability of two solar-selective aluminium titanium oxynitride multilayer coatings was studied under conditions simulating realistic operation of central receiver power plants. The coatings were deposited by cathodic vacuum arc applying an optimized design concept for complete solar-selective coating (SSC) stacks. Compositional, structural and optical characterization of initial and final stacks was performed by scanning electron microscopy, elastic recoil detection, UV–Vis–NIR-IR spectrophotometry and X-Ray diffraction. The design concept of the solar selective coatings was validated by an excellent agreement between simulated and initial experimental stacking order, composition and optical properties. Both SSC stacks were stable in single stage tests of 12 h at 650 °C. At 800 °C, they underwent a structural transformation by full oxidation and they lost their solar selectivity. During cyclic durability tests, multilayer 1, comprised of TiN, Al .64 Ti .36 N and an Al 1.37 Ti .54 O top layer, fulfilled the performance criterion (PC) ≤ 5% for 300 symmetric, 3 h long cycles at 600 °C in air. Multilayer 2, which was constituted of four Al y Ti 1-y (O x N 1-x ) layers, met the performance criterion for 250 cycles (750 h), but was more sensitive to these harsh conditions. With regard to the degradation mechanisms, the coarser microstructure of multilayer 1 is more resistant against oxidation than multilayer 2 with its graded oxygen content. These results confirm that the designed SSCs based on Al y Ti 1-y (O x N 1-x ) materials withstand breakdown at 600 °C in air. A letter to the editor is presented which discusses the Spanish Haematopoietic Transplant Group (GETH) Infectious Disease Registry-based research of non-Aspergillus invasive fungal infections (IFI) in allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) recipients.

A working fluid performs a Brayton cycle that is fed by a heat input from a solar power tower and from a combustion chamber, which burns natural gas. This hybrid system is described by a complete model that includes all the main losses and irreversibility sources (optical and thermodynamic). Numerical implementation and validation is performed based on a Spanish commercial plant. On-design computations are carried out varying the pressure ratio for four working fluids (dry air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and helium), for different number of stages and for recuperative and non-recuperative configurations. When adjusting the pressure ratio, an improvement of about 7 % in overall thermal efficiency is predicted for a dry air single-stage recuperative configuration with respect to a standard commercial gas turbine. A study about the main energy losses in each plant subsystem for some particular plant layouts is accomplished. A two-compression and expansion stages recuperative Brayton cycle working with air is expected to give overall thermal efficiencies about 0.29 at design conditions, which is about a 47% increase with respect to the simplest single-stage configuration. It is stressing that fuel consumption from the reheaters maybe higher than that of the main combustion chamber for multi-stage layouts. Off-design hourly curves of output records for the four seasons throughout a day are analyzed. Greenhouse emissions are also analyzed. Specific carbon dioxide emissions are smaller for helium than for dry air, when they both work in a single-stage non-recuperative configuration. • A comprehensive full model of a hybrid thermosolar plant is presented. • Solar, combustion, and power block subsystems are described in detail. • Numerical results are obtained for a commercial-size plant. • Several working fluids for the power block are analyzed. • Single-stage and multi-stage Brayton cycles are studied. • There are a wide variety of configurations that make these systems a priori commercially interesting. Background: We have investigated if rituximab-based salvage regimens improve response rates and survival of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) relapsing after an autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT). Patients and methods: We have retrospectively analyzed 82 patients with DLBCL who received salvage therapy for relapse or progression after ASCT. Patients were divided into two groups, according to whether rituximab-based salvage regimens were given (n = 42, 'R2' group) or not (n = 40, 'R+' group) after ASCT. Results: Patients in the R+ group had better complete remission (CR) (55% versus 21.4%, P = 0.006) and overall response (OR) (75% versus 40.4%, P = 0.001) rates, and better 3-year event-free survival (EFS) (37% versus 9%, P = 0.002) and overall survival (OS) (50% versus 20%, P = 0.005) than patients in the R2 group. Patients retreated with rituximab had better CR (42.9% versus 21.4%, P = 0.032) and OR (66.7% versus 40.4%, P = 0.019) rates, and better OS (36.2% versus 20% at 3 years, P = 0.05) and EFS (36.2% versus 9% at 3 years, P = 0.05) than patients who received chemotherapy alone at relapse after ASCT. Conclusions: The addition of rituximab to salvage chemotherapy improves response rates and EFS in patients with relapsed DLBCL after ASCT. These patients may benefit from rituximab retreatment, although larger prospective studies are needed to confirm these results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
