Abstract

Within development literature, recent decades have seen an unequivocal turn towards a call for a decentralised and more contextual and vernacular understanding of social, political and economic development. This paper brings together the development literature on the "participatory turn" with Henri Lefebvre's work on social spaces and autogestion, to move beyond the " what " and " how " of participation, to add the question of " where " in exploring efforts to overcome social segregation and build sustainable integrated communities. It discusses two very distinct regional cases—Kerala (India) and Northern Ireland—as examples to argue that our analysis of the potential for transformative politics in society needs to include a study of its "participatory spaces", and that this requirement transcends simple binaries like North/South, institutional/non-institutional, and top-down/bottom-up. • There is a turn within development literature towards participatory planning. • Emphasis continues to be on the "what" and "how" of participation, not the "where". • Overcoming social segregation necessitates creating shared grassroots spaces. • There is also the need to move beyond binaries like North/South and top-down/bottom-up. • Kerala and Northern Ireland show that shared spaces are important for inclusive development. Abstract

Background Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015. Methods We estimated incidence and prevalence by age, sex, cause, year, and geography with a wide range of updated and standardised analytical procedures. Improvements from GBD 2013 included the addition of new data sources, updates to literature reviews for 85 causes, and the identification and inclusion of additional studies published up to November, 2015, to expand the database used for estimation of non-fatal outcomes to 60 900 unique data sources. Prevalence and incidence by cause and sequelae were determined with DisMod-MR 2.1, an improved version of the DisMod-MR Bayesian meta-regression tool first developed for GBD 2010 and GBD 2013. For some causes, we used alternative modelling strategies where the complexity of the disease was not suited to DisMod-MR 2.1 or where incidence and prevalence needed to be determined from other data. For GBD 2015 we created a summary indicator that combines measures of income per capita, educational attainment, and fertility (the Socio-demographic Index [SDI]) and used it to compare observed patterns of health loss to the expected pattern for countries or locations with similar SDI scores. Findings We generated 9.3 billion estimates from the various combinations of prevalence, incidence, and YLDs for causes, sequelae, and impairments by age, sex, geography, and year. Abstract

Flow and heat transfer characteristics of curved rectangular winglet vortex generators (RWVGs) are investigated numerically. Three-dimensional numerical computations have been carried out for flow through a channel with curved RWVG mounted on its bottom wall. Effect of curvature of RWVG having concave and convex shapes with respect to the flow facing surface, has been addressed in terms of arc angle which is varied in the range from 15° to 120° for fixed arc length. Effect of curvature in concave and convex RWVG on flow and heat transfer characteristics has been compared with that of plane RWVG. Temperature and flow field characteristics near the plate surface have been presented and discussed with the help of temperature contours and streamline plots. Enhancement in heat transfer and pressure loss are examined by using Nusselt number and friction factor respectively. Maximum enhancement in heat transfer is found to be 22% for concave shape RWVG having arc angle equal to 75° as compared to channel in absence of RWVGs. The mechanism of heat transfer enhancement is explored with the help of secondary flow intensity and field synergy principle. Thermodynamic performance of various RWVGs has been analysed by calculating entropy generation rate caused by heat transfer and friction. Three-dimensional numerical investigations have been carried out to study effect of skewness in wavy channels on flow and heat transfer characteristics. Computations are performed using ANSYS Fluent 16.1 for different values of wave amplitude, skewness angle, Reynolds number ( Re ) and fixed values of channel width, wavelength. Streamline plots are presented in various planes for different values of skewness angle to understand the flow field characteristics of skewed wavy channels. Volume-averaged as well as span-averaged variation of secondary flow intensity for different skewness angles have been shown to elucidate the strength of induced secondary flow. Effect of secondary flow on heat transfer in skewed wavy channels has been quantified with the help of field synergy angle. Finally, effect of skewness on thermodynamic as well as overall thermo-hydraulic performance of the channel has been presented. Introduction of skewness in the wavy channel induces stronger secondary flow which makes the flow three-dimensional. Abstract

The Frank-Kasper cage compound EuV 2 Al 20 crystallizes in the cubic structure with Fd 3 ‾ m space group and exhibits unusual magnetic and transport properties. The system undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition below 5.6 K wherein the Eu 2+ moments are aligned anti-parallel along 〈1 1 1〉 direction and the system exhibits a weak metamagetic transition at the field of 1 T. Arrott plots ( M 2 vs H / M ) show a “S” shaped variation in the low fields below T N and the plausible reason for the occurrence of negative slope is discussed. Isothermal magnetic entropy change is estimated from both magnetization and heat capacity measurements invoking the Maxwell’s thermodynamic relations. Temperature variation of Δ S m showed a weak negative minimum and a sign reversal at the field value of 1 T due to field induced metamagnetic transition. A spacecraft consists of a number of mechanical and electronic sub-assemblies. An electronic package is consists of printed circuit boards placed in mechanical housings which are stacked together. Electronic components are mounted on the printed circuit board (PCB). A spacecraft experiences various types of mechanical loads during its launch such as vibration, acoustic and shock loads. The understanding of dynamic behaviour provides valuable insight to a design engineer, to improve the mechanical design and product reliability when used in harsh vibration condition. Generally electronic package design for vibration loads is verified by conducting tests on actual hardware. This paper addresses on using basic FEA tool to accurately investigate the dynamic characteristics of the PCB and avoid costly testing methods which require hardware. Here the normal modes & frequency response functions (FRF) of PCB are determined and validated using vibration test on PCB. The validated model is used to predict vibration response for random vibration input. It is shown here how the responses are accurately predicted for random vibration input for a design parameter variation of PCB. The results are also validated using vibration test on PCB. The compound PrFe 2 Al 8 possesses a three-dimensional network structure resulting from the packing of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr. Along the c -axis, Fe and Pr form chains which are separated from each other by the Al-network. In this paper, the magnetism and crystalline electric field effects in PrFe 2 Al 8 are investigated through the analysis of magnetization and specific heat data. A magnetic phase transition in the Pr lattice is identified at T N Pr ≈ 4 K in dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. At 2 K, the magnetization isotherm presents a ferromagnetic saturation, however, failing to reach full spin-only ferromagnetic moment of Pr 3+ . Metamagnetic step-like low-field features are present in the magnetization curve at 2 K which is shown to shift upon field-cooling the material. Arrott plots centered around T Pr N display “S”-like features suggestive of an inhomogeneous magnetic state. The magnetic entropy, S m , estimated from specific heat outputs a value of R ln(2) at T N 2 suggesting a doublet state for Pr 3+ . The magnetic specific heat is modeled by using a 9-level Schottky equation pertinent to the Pr 3+ ion with J =4. Given the crystalline electric field situation of Pr 3+ , the inference of a doublet state from specific heat and consequent long-range magnetic order is an unexpected result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Persons with epilepsy have higher cardiovascular mortality and morbidity compared to general population and alteration of their biochemical milieu is one of the proposed mechanisms. We aimed to study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk factors in young adults with epilepsy and the association with antiepileptic drug use.Method: An observational study was conducted in persons with epilepsy aged 20-49 years using antiepileptic drugs regularly for the previous three years. The subjects were examined and their blood samples were collected for fasting blood glucose and lipid profile.Results: Over 18 months, 183 patients (120 males; 63 females) were recruited (mean age 32.5 ± 8.9 years). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) by ATP III criteria was present in 54 (29.5%) subjects. People with MetS in our group had higher frequency of abdominal obesity (50.0%) and hypertriglyceridemia (55.5%) than diabetes/impaired fasting glucose (27.8%). Older age (p=0.005) and use of valproate (p=0.012) were associated with significant risk of MetS.Conclusion: Clinicians need to be vigilant regarding the risk of MetS while initiating treatment and following up persons with epilepsy. • Myristic acid is mixed with 0.5 wt% Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , CuO, and Ag nanoparticles to form a novel composite PCM. • Myristic acid is employed, whereas Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , CuO, and Ag are used as supporting materials. • Composite PCMs have faster melting and freezing times than pure PCMs, as stated to the results of this study. In the present work, four formulations of the composite phase change materials (PCMs) were produced by adding 0.5 wt% of nanoparticles (NPs), and each formulation comprised one of the types of nanoparticles. Myristic acid was considered as the base material; 0.5 wt% of Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , CuO, and Ag were reckoned as the supporting materials. Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , CuO, and Ag NPs were synthesized and they were studied by different characterization techniques. The melting and freezing temperatures of myristic acid were determined in the range from 55.54 °C to 55.94 °C and from 48.42 °C to 48.71 °C, respectively. Likewise, the latent heats for melting and freezing were found to be 192.31 kJ/kg and 192.53 kJ/kg, respectively. The thermal properties of composite PCMs were evaluated with respect to weight fractions of NPs and thermal cycles. With nanomaterial dispersion, the laser flash analyzer (LFA) confirmed the thermal conductivity enhancement of myristic acid. This paper investigates the thermal energy storage behaviours of the newly prepared composites as phase change materials (PCMs) for building heating application. The composite PCMs have been prepared with lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA) mixture as base material and TiO2, ZnO and CuO nanoparticles as supporting materials. The proportion of LA/SA mixture for the preparation of composite PCMs has been estimated as 70:30 by weight. TiO2, ZnO and CuO nanoparticles with 1.0 wt% mass fraction have been dispersed in the base material, individually. For ensuring the better stability of the supporting materials in the base material, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) has been preferred as the capping agent. The surface morphology of the as synthesized nanoparticles has been studied by SEM (scanning electron microscope). The phase change temperatures and latent heats of the composite PCMs have been evaluated by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) measurements. Thermal stability of the composite PCMs has been determined by TGA. The increase in thermal conductivity for composite PCMs with mass fraction of 1.0 wt% TiO2, ZnO and CuO nanoparticles has been estimated as 34.85%, 46.97% and 62.12%, respectively while comparing to base material. The experimental results have proved that time savings of composite PCM with CuO nanoparticles for melting and solidification processes are greater while comparing to the composite PCMs with TiO2, ZnO nanoparticles and base material. Abstract: We report on the single crystal growth of 50% Sr and Y doped multiferroic DyMnO3 using optical floating zone technique. A comparison of the effect of growth ambience and of chemical substitution on the crystal structure of DyMnO3 is attempted. It is observed that DyMnO3 adopts Pm3m cubic structure with 50% Sr doping whereas with 50% Y doping, the crystal structure is hexagonal . Orthorhombic Pnma structure is adopted by DyMnO3 when grown in air, whereas hexagonal structure is obtained when grown under the ambience of argon. The structural polymorphism is discussed in terms of difference in ionic sizes of Sr, Y and Dy, comparable Gibbs free energies and coordination schemes of surrounding oxygens for hexagonal and orthorhombic structures of DyMnO3. Abstract: This work aims at achieving enhanced energy conservation for space conditioning with the application of a new combined variable air volume (VAV)-based chilled water air conditioning (A/C) system and thermal energy storage (TES) system. The phase change material (PCM) used in this system exhibited good charging and discharging characteristics that directly helped in conserving the overall energy spent on cooling and ventilation. The present system was experimentally investigated for summer and winter climatic conditions under demand controlled ventilation (DCV) and DCV combined with the economizer cycle ventilation (ECV) to substantiate its energy savings capability. Based on the results, in the DCV and combined DCV–ECV modes, this system achieved 28% and 47% of per day average energy conservative potential, respectively, while compared to the conventional chilled water-based A/C system. Abstract

A handheld, portable and non-destructive instrumental sensor was developed to assess the freshness of Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) stored under ice. The freshness sensor consists of a webcam, raspberry-Pi (small single-board computer), LCD display and a power bank. The color changes in fish eye as a result of spoilage during iced storage was measured as pixel count using image processing technique. Simultaneously, destructive fish quality and freshness results were obtained by estimating K-value and Psychrophilic count during the storage. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess the relationship between pixel count and quality indicators. The analysis of results of K-value and Psychrophilic count revealed that fish quality and freshness limits can be established in storage days as extremely fresh up to third day, fresh till thirteenth day and then spoiled. Further, these quality limits were correlated with pixel count against storage days to establish three different ranges in pixel count. The obtained pixel count ranges were provided as input to the sensor for classification of fish samples into three indicative freshness levels i.e. Extremely fresh, Fresh and Spoiled. The wave crest height plays a vital role in designing both the fixed and floating marine structures. The present study examines the measured wave crest data at 18 m water depth off Visakhapatnam in the northwestern Bay of Bengal during the tropical cyclone (TC) Hudhud. The maximum significant wave height (H s) measured during the TC is 7.59 m on 12 October 2014 at 1030 h; the maximum wave height is 10.75 m and the crest height is 6.81 m. The average ratio of the crest height of the wave to the wave height is 0.4–0.7 during the TC. For waves with H s more than 6 m, the most extreme wave height is 1.46–1.83 times the H s and the crest height of the wave is 0.81–1.47 times the H s of the same 30-min record. Abstract: This report evaluated whether acute phase reactants can predict the development of mitral regurgitation following percutaneous mitral valvotomy. 58 patients who developed significant mitral regurgitation following valvotomy were retrospectively compared with 58 age, sex and procedure technique matched control patients, who had valvotomy without mitral regurgitation. ESR and total leucocyte count were significantly higher in the group who developed mitral regurgitation, than in the control group. Higher ESR and total leucocyte count may be indicative of ongoing low grade sub-clinical inflammatory process, which makes the valve tissue friable which can give way during balloon stretch and lead onto mitral regurgitation. Abstract: Two siblings with features of Brugada syndrome are reported. One of them had permanent pacemaker implantation elsewhere where he was evaluated for recurrent syncope and diagnosed to have tri-fascicular block. He continued to have syncopal episodes and subsequently detected to have runs of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia picked up on a routine ECG. An asymptomatic boy underwent surgical correction of anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) with trans-pulmonary artery interruption and saphenous vein grafting to left anterior descending coronary artery. He developed a shunt through the re-canalised pulmonary artery end of the ALCAPA which was successfully embolised using a detachable PDA coil delivered into the left main coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.
