UVB-irradiation during 3 d for 90, 180, and 180 sec, respectively, at a daily dose of 0.1 and 0.2 joule/cm², respectively, induced slight inflammatory reactions in the mouse ear. The insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) immunoreactivity, normally demonstrable only in scattered basal epidermal cells, rapidly increased in intensity and frequency in the epidermis. After 3 d of UVB irradiation almost all epidermal cells were outlined by IGF-I immunoreactivity in their plasma membrane. The Langerhans cells expressed intense IGF-I immunoreactivity throughout their cytoplasm. The elevated IGF-I immunoreactivity ceased after 5 - 7 d and was normalized in 3 weeks. The number of Ia positive epithelial Langerhans cells did not seem to be affected by UVB irradiation. It is concluded that the increased IGF-I immunoreactivity is likely to reflect formation of the trophic peptide IGF-I, most evidently by Langerhans cells, in early events of the inflammatory, reactive response of the skin to UVB irradiation. Abstract: Software is a major source of reliability degradation in dependable systems. One of the classical remedies is to provide software fault tolerance by using N-Version Programming (NVP). However, due to requirements on non-standard hardware and the need for changes and additions at all levels of the system, NVP solutions are costly, and have only been used in special cases. In a previous work, a low-cost architecture for NVP execution was developed. The key features of this architecture are the use of off-the-shelf components including communication standards and that the fault tolerance functionality, including voting, error detection, fault-masking, consistency management, and recovery, is moved into a separate redundancy management circuitry (one for each redundant computing node). In this article we present an improved design of that architecture, specifically resolving some potential inconsistencies that were not treated in detail in the original design. In particular, we present novel techniques for enforcing replica determinism. Our improved architecture is based on using the Controller Area Network (CAN). This choice goes beyond the obvious interest of using standards in order to reduce the cost, since all the rest of the architecture is designed to take full advantage of the CAN standard features, such as data consistency, in order to significantly reduce the complexity, the efficiency and the cost of the resultant system. Although initially developed for NVP, our redundancy management circuitry also supports other software replication techniques, such as active replication. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A large fraction of urban PM10 concentrations is due to non-exhaust traffic emissions. In this paper, a mobile measurement system has been used to quantify the relative importance of road particle emission and suspension of accumulated dust versus direct pavement wear, tire type (studded, friction, and summer), pavement type, and vehicle speed. Measurements were performed during May–September on selected roads with different pavements and traffic conditions in the Stockholm region. The highest particle mass concentrations were always observed behind the studded tire and the lowest were behind the summer tire; studded-to-summer ratios were 4.4–17.3 and studded-to-friction ratios were 2.0–6.4. This indicates that studded tires lead to higher emissions than friction and summer tires regardless to the asphalt type. By comparing with measurements in a road simulator, it could be estimated that the pavement wear due to the friction tires was 0.018–0.068 of the suspension of accumulated road dust. Likewise for studded tires road-wear was estimated to be 1.2–4.8 the suspension of accumulated dust. This indicates that wear due to friction tires is very small compared to the suspension of accumulated dust and that suspension due to studded tires may sometimes be as large as the wear of the road. But this will vary depending on, e.g. the amount of dust accumulated on the roads. An important dependence on vehicle speed was also observed. During May, the particle mass concentrations behind the studded tire at vehicle speed 100kmh−1 were about 10 times higher than that at 20kmh−1. The speed dependence was not so pronounced in September, which could be due to less accumulated dust on the roads. The particle number size distribution of the emissions due to road wear by studded tire was characterized by a clear increase in number concentrations of the coarse fraction of aerosol particles, with a geometric mean diameter between 3 and 5μm. The size distribution of the emissions due to the summer tire was very similar with smaller concentrations. An important limitation with the measurements presented is that they were made by using a van, which is bigger than regular cars and has bigger tires. Two and a half years (June 2002 to September 2004) of air pollution and meteorological parameters in a street canyon in Stockholm were analyzed. A distinctive dependence of particle number concentration, normalized by , with ambient temperature was found. By comparison with , it is concluded that this variation is not related to variability in the emissions nor due to changes in atmospheric dilution. The observed ratio between total particle number and increases from ca. [] particles per picogram of [] at to [] [] at . The increase in particle number concentration with decreasing temperatures is different for different particle sizes. For particle sizes smaller than 40nm the variation is more pronounced while for particle sizes larger than 100nm the change is not statistically significant. This reflects the impact of temperature dependent processes that affect mainly particles smaller than 100nm in diameter. Modeling results indicate that condensation of volatile compounds onto pre-existing aerosols gives similar changes in the particle size distribution as those observed. Coagulation is shown to have only minor effects on the particle size distribution. Even though, with the present data set is not possible to quantify the impact of an increased nucleation rate with low temperatures, it was shown that nucleation mode particles are largely influenced by relative humidity with high concentrations during high relative humidity periods and therefore it is expected that for cold periods, when the relative humidity is higher, nucleation is enhanced by the water content of the air. Abstract: Background. Abnormalities of the intervertebral discs have been found in a high frequency among young elite athletes. Several studies have also reported that the adolescent spine, especially the vertebral growth zones, is vulnerable to trauma. However, there is incomplete knowledge regarding the injury mechanism of the growing spine. In this study, the injury patterns of the adolescent porcine spine with disc degeneration were examined. Methods. Twenty-four male pigs were used. A degenerative disc was created by drilling a hole through the cranial endplate of a lumbar vertebra into the disc. Two months later the animals were sacrificed and the degenerative functional spinal units (segments) were harvested. The segments were divided into three groups and exposed to axial compression, flexion compression or extension compression to failure. The load and angle at failure were measured for each group. The segments were examined with magnetic resonance imaging and plain radiography before and after the loading and finally examined macroscopically and histologically. Findings. The degenerated segments required considerably more compressive load to failure than non-degenerated segments. Creating a flexion injury required significantly more load than an extension injury. Fractures and/or separations of the endplates from the vertebral bodies were seen at the margins of the endplates and in the growth zone. Only severe separations and fractures could be seen on plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Interpretation. The weakest part of the adolescent porcine lumbar spine with experimentally-induced degeneration, when loaded in axial compression, flexion compression or extension compression, was the growth zone, and, to a lesser extent, the endplate. Degenerated discs seem to withstand higher mechanical loads than non-degenerated discs, probably due to altered stress distribution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper synthesizes data on aerosol (particulate matter, PM) physical characteristics, which were obtained in European aerosol research activities at free-troposphere, natural, rural, near-city, urban, and kerbside sites over the past decade. It covers only two sites in the semi-arid Mediterranean area, and lacks data from Eastern Europe. The data include PM10 and/or PM2.5 mass concentrations, and aerosol particle size distributions. Such data sets are more comprehensive than those currently provided by air quality monitoring networks (e.g. EMEP, EUROAIRNET). Data available from 31 sites in Europe (called “The Network”) were reviewed. They were processed and plotted to allow comparisons in spite of differences in the sampling and analytical techniques used in various studies. A number of conclusions are drawn as follows:Background annual average PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations for continental Europe are 7.0±4.1 and 4.8±2.4 μg m−3, respectively.The EU 2005 annual average PM10 standard of 40 μg m−3 is exceeded at a few sites in The Network. At all near city, urban and kerbside sites, the EU 2010 annual average PM10 standard of 20 μg m−3, as well as the US-EPA annual average PM2.5 standard of 15 μg m−3 are exceeded. In certain regions, PM10 and PM2.5 in cities are strongly affected by the regional aerosol background.There is no “universal” (i.e. valid for all sites) ratio between PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations, although fairly constant ratios do exist at individual sites. There is no universal correlation between PM mass concentration on the one hand, and total particle number concentration on the other hand, although a ‘baseline’ ratio between number and mass is found for sites not affected by local emissions.
