In patients who are candidates for craniotomy, scalp nerve blocks have been shown to be effective in relieving pain intensity as well as postoperative hemodynamic stability after surgery, but the results have been inconsistent. We aimed to assess the effect of scalp block on pain control, intraoperative drug use under Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI) monitoring, and postoperative pain in patients who were candidates for elective craniotomy. In this randomized, single-blinded clinical trial study, candidates for craniotomy were randomly (using the block randomization method) divided into 2 groups before entering the operating room. The first group received a scalp block with bupivacaine (intervention), and the second group did not receive a scalp block (control) besides the routine anesthetic procedure in these patients. ANI, hemodynamic parameters, and the amounts of received remifentanil were conducted and compared. Patients under scalp block received less dosage of fentanyl than the nonscalp block group (mean = 57.14 ± 15.59 mcg vs. 250.00 ± 65.04 mcg, respectively). Similarly, the dose of remifentanil required in the scalp block group was less (mean = 3.04 ± 1.95 mg and 5.54 ± 2.57 mg, respectively). No difference was observed in hemodynamic parameters such as blood pressure and heart rate (before, during, and after surgery). However, the group receiving scalp block had higher ANI means than the control group. Scalp nerve block has an effective role in pain control (increasing ANI), consequently reducing the need for analgesic drugs such as fentanyl and remifentanil following craniotomy without changing the hemodynamic condition. Stress is proposed to be a crucial factor in the onset and presentation of psychosis. The early stage of psychosis provides a window into how stress interacts with the emergence of psychosis. Yet, how people with early psychosis respond to stress remains unclear. The current study examined how stress responses (brain, physiological, self-report) differ in early psychosis. Forty participants (20 early psychosis [EP], 20 healthy controls [HC]) completed a stress task in the scanner that involved viewing stressful and neutral-relaxing images. Physiological responses (cortisol, heart rate) and self-report of stress were also assessed. Region of Interest analyses were conducted with brain regions previously shown to be activated during the stress task (amygdala, hippocampus, striatum, hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex [dorsolateral, ventrolateral, medial orbital]). Linear mixed models were used to test for effects of group (EP, HC) and emotion (stress, neutral-relaxing). HC had higher hippocampus activation to stress versus neutral-relaxing conditions while EP did not show a difference (group x emotion interaction, p = 0.04). There were also significant main effects of group with EP having higher amygdala activation (p = 0.01), ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activation (vlPFC, p = 0.03), self-report of stress (p = 0.01), and heart rate (p < 0.001). Our study found preliminary evidence that people with early psychosis showed heightened response to stressful and non-threatening situations, across multiple levels of stress responses. We studied the changes in the heart rate variability of lame and nonlame dairy cows in response to transrectal examination (TRE) and parlor milking. We hypothesized that lame cows experience greater stress, manifested in heart rate variability parameters, that serves as an argument to promote more caution in the everyday handling of lame animals. In the study, we selected 55 lame (with lesions on at least one hoof, otherwise clinically healthy, with locomotion scores 4 and 5 of 5-point scores) and 55 nonlame (clinically healthy, with locomotion scores 1 and 2 of 5-point scores) cows. The heart rate, root mean square of successive beat-to-beat intervals (RMSSD), the normalized unit of the high-frequency (HF) component of the spectral analysis and Poincaré measures (SD2/SD1) were compared between lame and nonlame cows during 5 distinct stages of TRE and 7 stages of parlor milking. Heart rate, RMSSD, and SD2/SD1 showed similar patterns during TRE and milking, while HF remained fairly constant during the studied phases. No distinct RMSSD, HF, or SD2/SD1 changes were observed during the phases expected to elicit a stress response. Between-group differences were only observed in terms of HF. Baseline HF was higher in lame cows than in nonlame ones, and such a difference in direction was observed throughout the whole procedure. During milking and TRE, the heart rate, RMSSD, and SD2/SD1 values showed temporal changes in times of higher physical activity: moving to and waiting in the holding pen and moving into the milking stalls in the parlor for preparation in both lame and nonlame cows. The differences in baseline HF (normalized units) between lame and nonlame cows cannot be fully explained based on available information. The lack of a distinct, stress-related change in heart rate variability parameters in both groups can originate in methodological challenges inherent in animal heart rate variability measurements in field conditions. This study examined whether high frequency heart-rate variability (HF-HRV) and HF-HRV reactivity to worry moderate response to cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) within both a standard and stepped-care framework among cancer patients with comorbid insomnia. Biomarkers such as HF-HRV may predict response to CBT-I, a finding which could potentially inform patient allocation to different treatment intensities within a stepped-care framework. 177 participants (86.3 % female; M age = 55.3, SD = 10.4) were randomized to receive either stepped-care or standard CBT-I. 145 participants had their HRV assessed at pre-treatment during a rest and worry period. Insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and daily sleep diary across five timepoints from pre-treatment to a 12-month post-treatment follow-up. Resting HF-HRV was significantly associated with pre-treatment sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency but not ISI score. However, resting HF-HRV did not predict overall changes in insomnia across treatment and follow-up. Similarly, resting HF-HRV did not differentially predict changes in sleep diary parameters across standard or stepped-care groups. HRV reactivity was not related to any of the assessed outcome measures in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. Although resting HF-HRV was related to initial daily sleep parameters, HF-HRV measures did not significantly predict longitudinal responses to CBT-I. Dynamic Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (DULM) has first been developed for non-invasive Pulsatility measurements in the rodent brain. DULM relies on the localization and tracking of microbubbles (MBs) injected into the bloodstream, to obtain highly resolved velocity and density cine-loops. Previous DULM techniques required ECG-gating, limiting its application to specific datasets, and increasing acquisition time. The objective of this study is to eliminate the need for ECG-gating in DULM experiments by introducing a motion-matching method for time registration. We developed a motion-matching algorithm based on tissue Doppler that leverages the cyclic tissue motion within the brain. Tissue Doppler was estimated for each group of frames in the acquisitions, at multiple locations identified as local maxima in the skin above the skull. Subsequently, each group of frames was time-registered to a reference group by delaying it based on the maximum correlation value between their respective tissue Doppler signals. This synchronization ensured that each group of frames aligned with the brain tissue motion of the reference group, and consequently, with its cardiac cycle. As a result, velocities of MBs could be averaged to retrieve flow velocity variations over time. Initially validated in ECG-gated acquisitions in a rat model (n = 1), the proposed method was successfully applied in a mice model in 2D (n = 3) and in a feline model in 3D (n = 1). Performing time-registration with the proposed motion-matching method or by using ECG-gating leads to similar results. For the first time, dynamic velocity and density cine-loops were extracted without the need for any information on the animal ECG, and complex dynamic markers such as the Pulsatility index were estimated. Results suggest that DULM can be performed without external gating, enabling the use of DULM on any ULM dataset where enough MBs are detectable. To compare the effects of intranasal (IN) and intramuscular (IM) midazolam–butorphanol–ketamine on intraocular pressure (IOP), tear production (TP) and sedation in rabbits. Prospective, randomized, crossover experimental study. Fourteen male New Zealand White rabbits, aged 1–2 years, body mass 3.1 ± 0.8 kg (mean ± standard deviation). Rabbits were administered midazolam (1 mg kg–1), butorphanol (1.5 mg kg–1) and ketamine (5 mg kg–1) via IN and IM routes. IOP, TP and sedation scores were assessed at 0 (before drug administration), 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes after drug administration. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (f R), rectal temperature (RT), noninvasive mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and peripheral hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO 2) were simultaneously recorded until 45 minutes after drug administration. The onset and duration of sedation and sedation scores were recorded. Drug delivery route had no significant impact on mean IOP (p = 0.271) or TP (p = 0.062), and there were no significant changes over time for IOP (p = 0.711) or TP (p = 0.372). Similarly, delivery route had no significant impact on HR (p = 0.747), f R (p = 0.872), RT (p = 0.379), MAP (p = 0.217) and SpO 2 (p = 0.254). Sedation onset was faster with IN (3.0 ± 1.0 minutes) than with IM administration (4.9 ± 0.7 minutes) (p = 0.011), but sedation duration was significantly longer with IM (52.6 ± 7.2 minutes) than with IN delivery (30.7 ± 6.8 minutes) (p = 0.004). There was no significant difference in sedation scores between the two delivery routes at any of the recorded time points. The combination of midazolam–butorphanol–ketamine had minimal impact on physiological and ocular variables regardless of the route of administration, whereas IN drug administration led to a shorter onset and duration of action than IM administration. To determine the pharmacokinetics and physiological effects following oral and intravenous (IV) administration of gabapentin in goats. Prospective, crossover study with a 3 week washout period between treatments. A total of eight healthy, client-owned, female goats. Gabapentin (10 mg kg–1) was administered to goats either orally or IV. Gabapentin concentrations were measured in serum samples collected 0–96 hours post-administration using liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and temperature were recorded before and throughout the study. Correlations of the mean serum concentrations of gabapentin to those of each physiological parameter were determined using the Pearson method. The mean and standard deviation of oral bioavailability for gabapentin was 60.9 ± 11.2%. Maximum serum concentration of gabapentin was lower following oral (1.19 ± 0.29 μg mL–1) than after IV administration (59.76 ± 14.38 μg mL–1, p < 0.0001). Half-lives were longer following PO (8.18 ± 0.57 hours) than after IV administration (1.79 ± 0.06 hours, p < 0.0001). Time to maximum concentration was 6.86 ± 2.27 hours following oral administration. Heart rate was inversely correlated with serum gabapentin concentrations. Slight ataxia was observed in three animals, and one became recumbent following IV gabapentin. Gabapentin is well-absorbed following oral administration to goats but yielded significantly lower serum concentrations than the IV route. The longer half-life of gabapentin following oral than after IV administration may result from prolonged absorption throughout the caprine gastrointestinal tract. To evaluate the propofol-sparing and hemodynamic effects of guaifenesin administered for co-induction of anesthesia in sheep. Prospective, blinded, two-way crossover experimental study. Thirteen healthy adult female sheep. Anesthesia was induced without premedication with intravenous (IV) guaifenesin 5% at 100 mg kg–1 (GGE) or an equivalent volume of physiologic saline (SAL), followed by IV propofol at a controlled rate (1 mg kg–1 min–1). Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate and oscillometric noninvasive arterial blood pressure (NIBP) were recorded at baseline after co-induction administration, following endotracheal intubation and every 2 minutes thereafter for 10 minutes. Propofol doses required to achieve intubation after each co-induction treatment were compared by independent Student's t -test. Values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The propofol dose required (mean ± standard deviation) to achieve intubation was significantly lower (p = 0.001) in the GGE treatment (3.40 ± 0.74 mg kg–1) than in the SAL treatment (5.94 ± 1.09 mg kg–1). HR was increased after anesthetic induction compared with baseline in both treatments. HR was generally lower in the GGE treatment than in the SAL treatment. NIBP did not vary between GGE and SAL treatments. Guaifenesin, when administered as a co-induction agent with propofol in sheep, reduces propofol dose requirements and maintains hemodynamic variables within a clinically acceptable range. This study describes the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, including antinociceptive effects, of a transdermal buprenorphine solution in horses. It was hypothesized that transdermal application would lead to sustained blood concentrations and antinociceptive effects with fewer adverse effects compared with intravenous (IV) injection. Prospective nonrandomized four-part parallel experimental study. A group of eight horses (three mares and five geldings) aged 6–12 years. Horses were administered incremental doses of 15, 30 and 45 μg kg–1 of buprenorphine transdermal solution and a single IV dose of 5 μg kg–1 of buprenorphine with a 2 week washout period between treatments. Concentrations of buprenorphine were determined in plasma using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and modeled using a nonlinear mixed effects population pharmacokinetic model to determine pharmacokinetic parameters. Pharmacodynamic effects, including changes in locomotor activity, heart rate, body temperature, gastrointestinal borborygmi, thermal and mechanical nociceptive thresholds were recorded. Mixed effects analysis of variance and post hoc comparisons were performed using a Bonferroni multiple comparison adjustment to assess differences in pharmacodynamic parameters between baseline and each time point within each dose group and between dose groups at the same time point. Transdermal application of buprenorphine resulted in low systemic concentrations relative to IV injection. Bioavailability after transdermal application was 11%. Thermal nociceptive thresholds were significantly (p < 0.05) increased (4.3–10.7% relative to baseline) for up to 72 hours in the IV dose group, but only sporadically in the transdermal dose groups (2.5–9.9% relative to baseline). Changes in locomotor activity, heart rate and borborygmi varied over time and with dose. Limited thermal antinociceptive effects were observed at the transdermal doses studied likely owing to limited absorption relative to IV dosing. Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) face an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms linking PTSD to cardiovascular disease remain incompletely understood. We used a co-twin control study design to test the hypothesis that individuals with PTSD exhibit augmented peripheral and systemic vasoconstriction during a personalized trauma recall task. In 179 older male twins from the Vietnam Era Twin Registry, lifetime history of PTSD and current (last month) PTSD symptoms were assessed. Participants listened to neutral and personalized trauma scripts while peripheral vascular tone (Peripheral Arterial Tone ratio) and systemic vascular tone (e.g., total vascular conductance) were measured. Linear mixed-effect models were used to assess the within-pair relationship between PTSD and vascular tone indices. The mean age of participants was 68 years, and 19% had a history of PTSD. For the Peripheral Arterial Tone ratio analysis, 32 twins were discordant for a history of PTSD, and 46 were discordant for current PTSD symptoms. Compared with their brothers without PTSD, during trauma recall, participants with a history of PTSD had greater increases in peripheral (β = −1.01, 95% CI [−1.72, −0.30]) and systemic (total vascular conductance: β = −1.12, 95% CI [−1.97, −0.27]) vasoconstriction after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors. Associations persisted after adjusting for antidepressant medication use and heart rate and blood pressure during the tasks. Analysis of current PTSD symptom severity showed consistent results. PTSD is associated with exaggerated peripheral and systemic vasoconstrictor responses to traumatic stress reminders, which may contribute to elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. The neurocardiac circuit is integral to physiological regulation of threat and trauma-related responses. However, few direct investigations of brain-behavior associations with replicable physiological markers of PTSD have been conducted. The current study probed the neurocardiac circuit by examining associations among its core regions in the brain (e.g., insula, hypothalamus) and the periphery (heart rate [HR], high frequency heart rate variability [HF-HRV], and blood pressure [BP]). We sought to characterize these associations and to determine whether there were differences by PTSD status. Participants were N = 315 (64.1 % female) trauma-exposed adults enrolled from emergency departments as part of the prospective AURORA study. Participants completed a deep phenotyping session (e.g., fear conditioning, magnetic resonance imaging) two weeks after emergency department admission. Voxelwise analyses revealed several significant interactions between PTSD severity 8-weeks posttrauma and psychophysiological recordings on hypothalamic connectivity to the prefrontal cortex (PFC), insula, superior temporal sulcus, and temporoparietaloccipital junction. Among those with PTSD, diastolic BP was directly correlated with right insula-hypothalamic connectivity, whereas the reverse was found for those without PTSD. PTSD status moderated the association between systolic BP, HR, and HF-HRV and hypothalamic connectivity in the same direction. While preliminary, our findings may suggest that individuals with higher PTSD severity exhibit compensatory neural mechanisms to down-regulate autonomic imbalance. Additional study is warranted to determine how underlying mechanisms (e.g., inflammation) may disrupt the neurocardiac circuit and increase cardiometabolic disease risk in PTSD. In mid-later life adults, early-onset and late-onset (i.e., onset ≥50 years) depression appear to be underpinned by different pathophysiology yet have not been examined in relation to autonomic function. Sleep provides an opportunity to examine the autonomic nervous system as the physiology changes across the night. Hence, we aimed to explore if autonomic profile is altered in mid-later life adults with remitted early-onset, late-onset and no history of lifetime depression. Participants aged 50–90 years (n = 188) from a specialised clinic underwent a comprehensive clinical assessment and completed an overnight polysomnography study. General Linear Models were used to examine the heart rate variability differences among the three groups for four distinct sleep stages and the wake after sleep onset. All analyses controlled for potential confounders – age, sex, current depressive symptoms and antidepressant usage. For the wake after sleep onset, mid-later life adults with remitted early-onset depression had reduced standard deviation of Normal to Normal intervals (SDNN; p =.014, d = −0.64) and Shannon Entropy (p =.004, d = −0.46,) than those with no history of lifetime depression. Further, the late-onset group showed a reduction in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF n.u.) during non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 2 (N2; p =.005, d = −0.53) and non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 3 (N3; p =.009, d = −0.55) when compared to those with no lifetime history. Causality between heart rate variability and depression cannot be derived in this cross-sectional study. Longitudinal studies are needed to examine the effects remitted depressive episodes on autonomic function. The findings suggest differential autonomic profile for remitted early-onset and late-onset mid-later life adults during sleep stages and wake periods. Stem cells have gained attention as a promising therapeutic approach for damaged myocardium, and there have been efforts to develop a protocol for regenerating cardiomyocytes (CMs). Certain cells have showed a greater aptitude for yielding beating CMs, such as induced pluripotent stem cells, embryonic stem cells, adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction cells and extended pluripotent stem cells. The approach for generating CMs from stem cells differs across studies, although there is evidence that Wnt signaling, chemical additives, electrical stimulation, co-culture, biomaterials and transcription factors triggers CM differentiation. Upregulation of Gata4, Mef2c and Tbx5 transcription factors has been correlated with successfully induced CMs, although Mef2c may potentially play a more prominent role in the generation of the beating phenotype, specifically. Regenerative research provides a possible candidate for cardiac repair; however, it is important to identify factors that influence their differentiation. Elevated resting heart rate (RHR) and reduced heart rate variability (HRV) are signs of autonomic nervous system dysfunction identified in schizophrenia (SCZ). This dysfunction has been found to manifest prior to the onset of the clinical diagnosis. Yet whether such autonomic dysfunction is associated with vulnerability to schizophrenia remains unknown. This case-control study included recent onset SCZ patients (n = 35) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 33). Patients were scored for self-disorders (SD's) using the EASE manual and all participants underwent a 5-minute resting state electrocardiogram (ECG) recording. Patients were included from outpatient clinics in Denmark. The main measures comprised EASE total scores (SDs), RHR (beats per minute) and three standard HRV measures usually included in testing autonomic nervous system dysfunction: root mean squared of successive differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of normal-to-normal interval (SDNN) and high-frequency/ low frequency ratio (HF/LF). Pearson correlations and linear regression models adjusted for age, sex and medication were used in the SCZ group. The main finding was a positive moderate association between SDs and RHR (r = 0.463; p = 0.005) and a negative association between SDs and HRV (RMSSD) (r = −0.440; p = 0.008) in the SCZ group. Linear regression models found SDs to explain 22 % of the variance of RHR and 19 % in RMSSD. SDs correlated with LF/HF (r = 0.434; p = 0.009), but non-significantly with SDNN. • This paper proposes an objective method to measure drivers' level of emotional instability in conditionally automated driving and the result showed that integrating subjective ratings and EEG and ECG signals can achieve a more objective and reliable measure of the level of emotional instability. • Our findings lend support for a relation between drivers' level of emotional instability and physiological responses. The result showed that drivers' HR, HRV features and features of EEG can reflect two characteristics of the emotional instability system. • Our result showed that emotional instability has the potential to reduce drivers' lateral takeover performance by decreasing situation awareness, increasing load, and decreasing attention. When the automated driving system reaches its technical limit, drivers will have to take over control from the vehicle within a limited time. The drivers' emotional instability may affect whether they can safely control the vehicle during takeover transitions. Accordingly, this paper explores the association between emotional instability and physiological responses and driver takeover performance. 42 drivers engaged in negative emotion induced by movie clips were involved in a sequence of takeover events in a driving simulator. Personality questionnaires were used to assess the driver's level of emotional instability. Their physiological data before the takeover request (TOR) and operational behavior data fragments for the takeover process were extracted. The results demonstrated that integration of subjective evaluations with electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals allows for more objective measurement of drivers' level of emotional instability. The statistical analyses indicated that emotional instability has a significant effect on drivers' heartbeat interval, heart rate, the frequency bands of θ(4–8 Hz), α(8–12 Hz), β(13–30 Hz), γ (30–50 Hz) and lateral takeover performance. Those findings of differences in driver physiological responses and takeover performance under emotional instability may provide additional support for the design of driver state monitoring and adaptive warning systems. Over 300 million individuals worldwide suffer from major depressive disorder (MDD). Individuals with MDD are less physically active than healthy people which results in lower cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and less favorable perceived fitness compared with healthy controls. Additionally, individuals with MDD may show autonomic system dysfunction. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the CRF, perceived fitness and autonomic function in in-patients with MDD of different severity compared with healthy controls. We used data from 212 in-patients (age: 40.7 ± 12.6 y, 53% female) with MDD and from 141 healthy controls (age: 36.7 ± 12.7 y, 58% female). We assessed CRF with the Åstrand-Rhyming test, self-reported perceived fitness and autonomic function by heart rate variability (HRV). In specific, we used resting heart rate, time- and frequency-based parameters for HRV. In-patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to self-assess the subjectively rated severity of depression. Based on these scores, participants were grouped into mild, moderate and severe MDD. The main finding was an inverse association between depression severity and CRF as well as perceived fitness compared with healthy controls. Resting heart rate was elevated with increasing depression severity. The time-based but not the frequency-based autonomic function parameters showed an inverse association with depression severity. The pattern of results suggests that among in-patients with major depressive disorder, those with particularly high self-assessed severity scores show a lower CRF, less favorable perceived fitness and partial autonomic dysfunction compared to healthy controls. Skull pin insertion causes hypertension and tachycardia that adversely affects cerebral hemodynamics. We compared the efficacy of sterile silicone studs (SS) and pin site infiltration with lidocaine in attenuation of the sympathetic response to skull pin insertion. Adult patients (N = 120) undergoing supratentorial craniotomy under general anesthesia were randomized to receive either medical-grade sterile SS or 2 mL of 2% plain lidocaine infiltration at each pin site. Hemodynamic (heart rate and mean arterial pressure) response to skull pin insertion at baseline and at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 5 minutes after skull pin insertion was compared. Requirement of rescue analgesia (fentanyl), complications such as pin-site bleeding, and surgeon satisfaction score were assessed. Heart rate in the lidocaine group was significantly greater at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 5 minutes after pin insertion compared with the SS group (P < 0.05). Mean arterial pressure was also significantly higher in the lidocaine group at 0, 1, 2, and 3 minutes after pin insertion (P = 0.001, P = 0.01, P = 0.034, and P = 0.042) compared with the SS group. The number of patients requiring fentanyl [17/60 (28.3%) vs. 40/60 (66%), P = 0.001] was lower in the SS group. The incidence of pin site bleeding was also lower in the SS group, and surgeon satisfaction score was greater. Sterile SS appear to be more effective than lidocaine infiltration in attenuating the hemodynamic response to skull pin insertion with minimal adverse effects. Breath-holding spells are a benign condition primarily seen in 3% to 5% of healthy children aged between six months and five years. Although no specific treatment is recommended due to its benign nature, iron and piracetam are used in severe or recurrent cases. We planned to compare the heart rate variability (HRV) before and after treatment with 24-hour Holter monitoring in patients receiving iron and piracetam treatment and investigate the treatment's effectiveness. Twenty-five patients who applied to the outpatient clinic between 2013 and 2015 due to breath-holding spells were included in the study. The patients who received piracetam and iron therapy and underwent 24-hour rhythm Holter monitoring were evaluated retrospectively. Fourteen (56%) of these patients were evaluated as having cyanotic-type and 11 (44%) patients were assessed as having pale-type breath-holding spells. A significant difference was found only between hourly peak heart rate and total power in the group receiving iron treatment. Significant differences were also found among the minimum heart rate, mean heart rate, the standard deviation of RR intervals, the mean square root of the sum of the squares of their difference between adjacent RR intervals, spectpow, and low frequency before and after the treatment in the patients who started piracetam treatment (P < 0.05). Our study is critical as it is the first to investigate the effects of treatment options on various HRV in patients with breath-holding spells. There were statistically significant changes in HRV parameters in patients receiving piracetam, and the number of attacks decreased significantly. This study explores the feasibility and effects of music therapy on anticipatory nausea and vomiting, stress, pain and quality of life in adolescents undergoing chemotherapy. This is a single group, quasi-experimental study using pre/post-test design. Participants received four individual sessions of music therapy (MT), led by a certified music therapist. State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory Y-1, and a 0-4 Likert scale for pain, nausea and vomiting were recorded. Heart rate variability (LF/HF) was collected during sessions. PedsQL was collected before and at the end of the trial. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants. A significant reduction in anxiety, nausea and vomiting, both pre-post single sessions and between different sessions, was observed. A significant increase in LF/HF and PedsQL scores was observed. Relevant themes also emerged from interviews. Results support the feasibility of introducing music therapy with adolescents undergoing chemotherapy. Up to 55 % of students experience test anxiety (TA), which is characterized by intense physiological and psychological symptoms before or during exams, such as anxiety, fear of failure, sweating, or increased heart rate. Furthermore, TA increases graduation times and can result in discontinuance of the graduate program all together. Previous research demonstrated the beneficial effects of combining cognitive behavioral therapy with imagery rescripting, however, treatment programs are comparably long. Hence, they do not account for the students´ time-sensitive schedules. Therefore, the present study investigates a two-session short-intervention using imagery rescripting to treat TA. 44 students and pupils were randomly assigned to either the two-session imagery rescripting intervention (22 participants) or the waitlist-control condition (22 participants). One week before the intervention clinical interviews were conducted and self-report questionnaires on TA, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, and intrusive prospective images were completed (T1). The same questionnaires were completed one week (T2) and six months after the intervention (T3). Test anxiety significantly decreased from T1 to T2, as well as from T1 to T3 within the intervention group. Furthermore, there were medium to large within and between group effects for situational test anxiety, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, as well as prospective intrusive images, showing significant improvements for the intervention group at six months follow-up. The study is limited to the comparably small sample size, as well as the sole usage of self-report measurements. Nature therapies are gaining attention as non-pharmacological treatments for depressive and anxiety disorders, but research on their effectiveness in patients is limited. This study investigates the mood-improving effects of visual stimulation with natural environmental images in patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. We conducted a randomized crossover comparison trial involving 60 right-handed adult participants with depressive or anxiety disorders and receiving outpatient treatment. Visual stimuli of natural environments consisted of green-themed nature images, while the control stimuli featured urban scenes dominated by buildings. The stimulation lasted for 3 min, during which orbital prefrontal brain activity was measured using a 2-channel Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) system, and heart rate variability was assessed using fingertip accelerated plethysmography. Mood enhancement effects were observed in both the depressive and anxiety disorder groups following visual stimulation with nature images. In the depression group, orbital prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin concentration significantly increased after visual stimulation with nature images, while there were no significant changes in the anxiety group. However, in the anxiety group, a correlation was found between reduced orbital prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin in response to nature images and increased mood-enhancement. Furthermore, the severity of depressive symptoms did not significantly affect the intervention effects, whereas heightened anxiety symptoms was associated with a smaller mood enhancement effect. Our study demonstrates the benefits of nature image stimulation for patients with depressive and anxiety disorders. Interoception relies on prediction, like exteroceptive perceptions such as vision. Unlike the study of vision, cognitive science lacks a clear mechanistic model of how physical energies in the viscera translate into affective experiences. We outline a model whereby physical energies in the viscera are transduced, transmitted, and compressed within the interoceptive system. The proposed model can explain why interoceptive sensations are integrated into experiences of affective states. We speculate on how valence and arousal might emerge from distinct processes in interoceptive pathways. This model begins to explain how a beating heart is experienced as arousing, unpleasant, and even fearful. Scholars have argued for centuries that affective states involve interoception, or representations of the state of the body. Yet, we lack a mechanistic understanding of how signals from the body are transduced, transmitted, compressed, and integrated by the brains of humans to produce affective states. We suggest that to understand how the body contributes to affect, we first need to understand information flow through the nervous system's interoceptive pathways. We outline such a model and discuss how unique anatomical and physiological aspects of interoceptive pathways may give rise to the qualities of affective experiences in general and valence and arousal in particular. Cardiorespiratory control is immature in infants born preterm compared to those born at term. Animal studies have shown that repetitive hypoxia associated with periodic breathing can alter autonomic control. We aimed to elucidate if the amount of time spent with apnoea and periodic breathing in the neonatal unit was associated with longitudinal changes in autonomic control assessed using heart rate variability. Twenty-nine very preterm infants (10 M 19F) were studied during supine daytime sleep on 4 occasions. Study 1: 32–36 weeks post menstrual age (PMA) (n = 29), Study 2: 36–40 weeks PMA (n = 27), Study 3: 3-months corrected age (CA) (n = 20) and Study 4: 6-months CA (n = 26). The percentage total sleep time (%TST) spent having apnoeas in active (AS) and quiet sleep (QS) at each study was calculated. Total power, low frequency (LF, sympathetic + parasympathetic activity) high frequency (HF, parasympathetic activity), and LF/HF (sympathovagal balance) were calculated. Infants were divided into two groups based on the %TST spent with apnoeas above and below the median in AS and QS at Study 1. Data were normalised and compared with two-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc tests. When apnoeas were included in the analysis, in QS Total power and HF power were higher, and when apnoeas were excluded HF power was higher in QS but lower in AS in the above median group at Study 4. Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and altered cardiovascular autonomic control. We aimed to analyze the effect of DS on the surge in heart rate (HR) and pulse transit time (PTT, an inverse surrogate measure of blood pressure change) at respiratory event termination. 44 children (3–19 y) with DS and 44 typically developing (TD) children matched for SDB severity, age and sex underwent overnight polysomnography. Multilevel modelling determined the effect of DS on HR and PTT changes between a 10s pre-event to the latter half of each respiratory event (late-event) and 15s post-event during NREM and REM, accounting for SDB severity and event length. The children with DS had a significantly smaller % change in HR late-event to post-event (NREM: DS 26.4 % ± 17.5 % (mean ± SD), TD 30.7 % ± 21.0 %; REM DS 16.9 % ± 15.3 %, TD 21.0 % ± 14.0 %; p < 0.05 for both) compared with TD children for obstructive events, and central events (13.2 % ± 17.0 %, TD 18.8 % ± 17.0 %; p < 0.01) during REM. %change in PTT was significantly smaller in the DS group during NREM and REM from pre-event and late-event to post-event compared with TD children for obstructive and central events. These results suggest children with DS have dampened HR and BP responses to respiratory events compared with TD children. Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurological disorder primarily associated with mutations in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. The syndrome is characterized by cognitive, social, and physical impairments, as well as sleep disorders and epilepsy. Notably, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system is a key feature of the syndrome. Although Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been used to investigate autonomic nervous system dysfunction in RTT during wakefulness, there is still a significant lack of information regarding the same during sleep. Therefore, our aim was to investigate cardiovascular autonomic modulation during sleep in subjects with RTT compared to an age-matched healthy control group (HC). A complete overnight polysomnographic (PSG) recording was obtained from 11 patients with Rett syndrome (all females, 10 ± 4 years old) and 11 HC (all females, 11 ± 4 years old; p = 0.48). Electrocardiogram and breathing data were extracted from PSG and divided into wake, non-REM, and REM sleep stages. Cardiac autonomic control was assessed using symbolic non-linear heart rate variability analysis. The symbolic analysis identified three patterns: 0 V% (sympathetic), 2UV%, and 2LV% (vagal). The 0 V% was higher in the RTT group than in the HC group during wake, non-REM, and REM stages (p < 0.01), while the 2LV and 2UV% were lower during wake and sleep stages (p < 0.01). However, the 0 V% increased similarly from the wake to the REM stage in both RTT and HC groups. Therefore, the sympatho-vagal balance shifted towards sympathetic predominance and vagal withdrawal during wake and sleep in RTT, although cardiac autonomic dynamics were preserved during sleep. Both low vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV) and depression have been shown to be risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We recently identified an HRV cutpoint below which persons have an increased risk for several cardiometabolic disorders. However, no cutpoint exists to identify those at risk for depression. The association between daytime HRV and diagnostically validated depression cutoffs using the five-item World Health Organization Well-being Index (WHO-5) was examined in adults from the Mannheim Industrial Cohort Study (n = 9973; M age = 41.9[10.9]; 20 % women [ n = 1934]). The aim was to identify HRV cutpoints for individuals who may have clinical depression. Regression adjusting for age, sex, and linear trend showed a significant quadratic association between depression, indexed by WHO-5 scores and HRV, indexed by the root mean square successive differences (RMSSD) in milliseconds (ms) (p < 0.001). Logistic regression models adjusting for age, sex, and heart period (i.e., inter-beat intervals) compared the clinically depressed (WHO-5 ≤ 28) and those with a screening diagnosis of depression (WHO-5 ≤ 50) to the rest of the population. Significant odds ratios suggested two RMSSD values 25 ± 2 ms (OR = 1.39 [1.17, 1.64]) and 35 ± 2 ms (OR = 1.17 [1.02, 1.34]) that may be used to identify those with an elevated risk for depression. The sample was primarily German men. Fitness and anti-depressant use were not available. Prominent theories of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) propose that the behaviour is characterised by amplified emotional responses. However, little is known about how people who self-injure respond during emotional challenge. We measured subjective and physiological responding (heart rate, heart rate variability, and electrodermal responding) among young adults with past-year NSSI (n = 51) and those with no lifetime NSSI (n = 50) during a resting baseline, a stress induction, and a post-stress resting phase. Participants reported the extent to which they spontaneously used cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression during the post-stress phase. Two weeks later, a subset of the sample (n = 42) reported how they remembered feeling during the laboratory session. Although the NSSI group reported considerably greater emotion dysregulation than Controls, both groups showed similar subjective and psychological reactivity to, and recovery from, emotional challenge. Both groups used reappraisal and suppression regulation strategies following acute stress to a similar extent, and later came to remember the emotional challenge in a similar manner. Within the NSSI group, past-year self-injury tended to be infrequent and sporadic. Only 43.6% of the sample participated in the follow-up survey assessing memory of emotional challenge. Findings demonstrate that the role of emotion in NSSI is more complex than prominent theories can account for, raising substantial questions regarding the nature of emotion in NSSI. Heart rate variability (HRV) is often reduced in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and is linked to symptoms. However, prior studies have mainly focused on short-term HRV, with limited exploration of the 24-h HRV circadian rhythm, despite its ability to comprehensively capture overall HRV distribution and dynamic fluctuations. In this study, we investigated the circadian rhythms of 24-h HRV indices in patients with MDD and their associations with symptom severity. We recorded 24-h electrocardiograms in 73 patients with MDD (53 in major depressive episode and 20 in remission period) and 31 healthy controls. An extended cosine model was used to model the circadian rhythm of six HRV indices by five parameters: the mesor, amplitude, duty cycle, curve smoothness, and acrophase. Symptom severity was evaluated using the Hamilton Depression Scale and Hamilton Anxiety Scale. Compared with the control group, patients with MDD had a significantly smaller SampEn mesor, higher HF duty cycle, and lower heart rate (HR) duty cycle. They also had a significantly higher curve smoothness for HR, RMSSD, and HF. The mesor for SampEn, along with the curve smoothness for HR and ln RMSSD, were associated with certain symptoms in patients with MDD. Limitations. The cross-sectional design and psychiatric treatment of most patients with MDD limited our findings. Patients with MDD exhibit abnormal HRV circadian rhythms that are associated with symptoms. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationships between glycemia and function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), assessed via resting-state functional connectivity (FC) and heart-rate variability (HRV). Data for this study were extracted from the Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions, including 146 healthy adults (114 young, 32 older). Variables of interest were glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), resting-state FC in the salience aspect of the central-autonomic (S-CAN) and salience network (SN) and HRV (RMSSD and high-frequency HRV (HF-HRV)). HbA1c was inversely correlated with FC in the S-CAN but not SN. HbA1c was inversely correlated with HRV. Both RMSSD and log(HF-HRV) were correlated with FC in the S-CAN and SN. Age- (not sex-related) differences were observed in the Hb1Ac-FC associations (stronger in older adults) while sex- (not age-related) differences were observed in the HRV-FC (stronger in females). These findings extend the diabetes literature to healthy adults in relating glycemia and brain function. Ichnos has developed a multi-specific antibody platform based on the BEAT® (Bispecific engagement by antibodies based on the T-cell receptor) interface. The increased complexity of the bi- and multi-specific formats generated with this platform makes these molecules difficult-to-express proteins compared to standard monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). This report describes how expression limitations of a bi-specific bi-paratopic BEAT antibody were improved in a holistic approach. An initial investigation allowed identification of a misbalance in the subunits composing the BEAT antibody as the potential root cause. This misbalance was then addressed by a signal peptide optimization, and the overall expression level was increased by the combination of two vector design elements on a single gene vector. Further improvements were made in the selection of cell populations and an upstream (USP) platform process was applied in combination with a cell culture temperature shift. This allowed titer levels of up to 6 g/L to be reached with these difficult-to-express proteins. Furthermore, a high-density seeding process was developed that allowed titers of around 11 g/L for the BEAT antibody, increasing the initial titer by a factor of 10. The approach was successfully applied to a tri-specific antibody with titer levels reaching 10 g/L. The impacts of antidepressant pharmacotherapies on cardiovascular risk are unclear. We completed a systematic review with meta-analysis to assess the effect of paroxetine on heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The searches were accomplished via EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed (using the National Library of Medicine), Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. We included non-blind, single, or double-blind randomized control trials in patients older than 18 diagnosed with MDD. Paroxetine needs to be enforced as a chronic therapeutic medication. We included individual studies that investigated resting HRV. We documented 402 studies, only following screening and eligibility phases; only six were included (five studies in the meta-analysis). No significant change was noticed for the SDNN index: subtotal = 8.23 [CI: −2.17, 18.63], p = 0.12, I2 = 54 % (very low quality of evidence). A significant change was distinguished for the LF index: subtotal = 0.74 [CI: 0.33, 1.15], p = 0.0004, I2 = 0 % (low quality of evidence). A significant alteration was perceived for the HF index: subtotal = 0.33 [CI: 0.06, 0.6], p = 0.02, I2 = 0 % (low quality of evidence). Meta-analysis demonstrated that paroxetine could advance HRV in MDD patients. Arrhythmias frequently accompany heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction. Tachycardias, atrial fibrillation, and premature ventricular contractions can induce a reversible form of dilated cardiomyopathy (CM) known as arrhythmia-induced CM (AiCM). The intriguing question is why certain individuals are more susceptible to AiCM, despite similar arrhythmia burdens. The primary challenge is determining the extent of arrhythmias' contribution to left ventricular systolic dysfunction. AiCM should be considered in patients with a mean heart rate of >100 beats/min, atrial fibrillation, or a PVC burden of >10%. Confirmation of AiCM occurs when CM reverses upon eliminating the responsible arrhythmia. Therapy choice depends on the specific arrhythmia, patient comorbidities, and preferences. After left ventricular function is restored, ongoing follow-up is essential if an abnormal myocardial substrate persists. Accurate diagnosis and treatment of AiCM have the potential to enhance patients' quality of life, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce hospital admissions and overall health care costs. Socioeconomic deprivation is associated with a lower likelihood of referral for advanced heart failure (HF) evaluation, but it is not known whether it influences rates of advanced HF therapies independently of key hemodynamic measures and comorbidity following advanced HF evaluation in a universal healthcare system. We linked data from a single-center Danish clinical registry of consecutive patients evaluated for advanced HF with patient-level information on socioeconomic status. Patients were divided into groups based on the level of education (low, medium, and high), combined degree of socioeconomic deprivation (low, medium, and high), and household income quartiles. Rates of the combined outcome of left ventricular assist device implantation or heart transplantation (advanced HF therapy) with death as a competing risk were estimated with cumulative incidence functions, and Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for age, sex, central venous pressure, cardiac index, and comorbidities. We included 629 patients, median age 53 years, of whom 77% were men. During a median follow-up of 5 years, 179 (28%) underwent advanced HF therapy. The highest level of education was associated with higher rates (high vs low, adjusted HR 1.81 95% CI 1.14–2.89, p = 0.01), whereas household income quartile groups (Q4 vs Q1, adjusted HR 1.37 95% CI 0.76–2.47, p = 0.30) or groups of combined socioeconomic deprivation (high vs low degree of deprivation, adjusted HR 0.86 95% CI 0.50–1.46, p = 0.56) were not significantly associated with rates of advanced HF therapy. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of carbetocin administration (a long-acting analog of oxytocin) 20 or 10 min before electroejaculation (EE) on the duration of semen collection procedure, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the ejaculate, and stress biomarkers in rams. Semen was collected from 12 Corriedale rams (age, 2.5–5.5 years old) with EE, in a Latin-square design, administrating carbetocin (0.2 mg/100 kg of body weight i.v.) 20 or 10 min before EE, or without carbetocin administration (CB-20, CB-10, and CON treatments, respectively). Each treatment was applied to different rams every 3–4 days, allowing all the rams to receive all three treatments. Carbetocin administered 20 or 10 min before EE increased the number of sperm ejaculated (P = 0.01), the semen concentration (P = 0.02), the number of insemination doses collected in a single collection (P = 0.01), and the number of insemination doses collected/electrical pulses administered (P = 0.05) compared to control rams. Carbetocin administered 20 or 10 min before semen collection prolonged the time required for EE and the number of pulses administered during EE compared to CON rams (P < 0.03 for both). The CB-10 rams required the administration of more electrical pulses during ejaculation than CON rams (P = 0.001), and CB-20 treatment tended to require more electrical pulses than CON rams (P = 0.06). The volume of the ejaculate was greater in CB-10 than in CON rams (P = 0.01), and that of CB-20 treatment tended to be greater than CON rams (P = 0.08). The percentage of sperm with intact membrane was greater in CB-20 than in CON rams (P = 0.01). Total protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations were lower immediately after carbetocin administration 20 or 10 min before EE. The treatments did not affect cortisol concentration, glycemia, rectal and surface temperatures, heart rate, and facial expressions. Carbetocin administration before EE of rams improved the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the ejaculate, duplicating the number of insemination doses collected. • This study examined the effects of intermittent (iTBS), continuous (cTBS) or sham TBS (sTBS) of the left DLPFC before a stressor. • cTBS compared to sTBS and iTBS resulted in an attenuated stress-induced cortisol response in high compared to low trait ruminators. • There were rumination independent TBS effects on mood and heart rate, but not on other psychophysiological measures of stress. Previous studies suggest that theta burst stimulation (TBS), a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) might be a promising approach to modulate stress-reactive rumination and the associated psychophysiological stress response. Crucially, individuals showing higher levels of trait rumination might benefit more from prefrontal stimulation. In this sham-controlled study, 127 healthy individuals, with varying ruminative tendencies, received a single-session of intermittent TBS (iTBS), continuous TBS (cTBS) or sham TBS (sTBS) over the left DLPFC before being confronted with a Trier Social Stress Test. Results showed significant TBS effects on salivary cortisol as a function of trait rumination. cTBS, as compared to sTBS and iTBS, resulted in an attenuated stress-induced cortisol response in high compared to low trait ruminators. Although independent of trait rumination levels, cTBS showed positive effects on stress-related changes in mood and, both cTBS and iTBS (versus sham) presented an enhanced heart rate recovery following the stressor. We found no evidence for (trait rumination-dependent) TBS effects on stress-reactive rumination, negative affect, subjective stress or heart rate variability. cTBS shows beneficial effects on certain measures of stress, especially in high trait ruminators. In contrast to obstructive sleep apnoea, the peak of sympathetic tone in central sleep apnoea occurs during the hyperventilation phase. To explore the temporal association of premature ventricular complex (PVC) burden in the context of the apnoea/hypopnoea-hyperpnoea cycle, the duration of apnoea/hypopnoea was defined as 100 %. We assessed the PVC burden throughout the apnoea/hypopnoea-hyperpnoea cycle during the periods of ±150 % in 50 % increments before and after the apnoea/hypopnoea phase. Heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of the fluctuations in the intervals between consecutive heartbeats, is an indicator of changes in the autonomic nervous system. A chronic reduction in HRV has been repeatedly linked to clinical depression. However, the chronological and mechanistic aspects of this relationship, between the neural, physiological, and psychopathological levels, remain unclear. In this review we present evidence by which changes in HRV might precede the onset of depression. We describe several pathways that can facilitate this relationship. First, we examine a theoretical model of the impact of autonomic imbalance on HRV and its role in contributing to mood dysregulation and depression. We then highlight brain regions that are regulating both HRV and emotion, suggesting these neural regions, and the Insula in particular, as potential mediators of this relationship. We also present additional possible mediating mechanisms involving the immune system and inflammation processes. Lastly, we support this model by showing evidence that modification of HRV with biofeedback leads to an improvement in some symptoms of depression. The possibility that changes in HRV precede the onset of depression is critical to put to the test, not only because it could provide insights into the mechanisms of the illness but also because it may offer a predictive and diagnostic physiological marker for depression. As an increasingly used alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has been widely detected in global water environments. However, little is known regarding its toxic effects on cardiovascular development. Here, zebrafish embryos were treated with egg water containing 0, 60, 120, or 240 mg/L HFPO-TA. Results showed that HFPO-TA treatment led to a significant reduction in both larval survival percentage and heart rate. Furthermore, HFPO-TA exposure caused severe pericardial edema and elongation of the sinus venous to bulbus arteriosus distance (SV-BA) in Tg (myl7: GFP) transgenic larvae, disrupting the expression of genes involved in heart development and thus causing abnormal heart looping. Obvious sprouting angiogenesis was observed in the 120 and 240 mg/L exposed Tg (fli: GFP) transgenic larvae. HFPO-TA treatment also impacted the mRNA levels of genes involved in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway and embryonic vascular development. HFPO-TA exposure significantly decreased erythrocyte number in Tg (gata1: DsRed) transgenic embryos and influenced gene expression associated with the heme metabolism pathway. HFPO-TA also induced oxidative stress and altered the transcriptional levels of genes related to cell cycle and apoptosis, inhibiting cell proliferation while promoting apoptosis. Fatigue is a complex state resulting in decreased alertness, often accompanied by drowsiness. Driving fatigue has significantly contributed to traffic accidents globally, highlighting the need for effective monitoring techniques. Various technologies exist to enhance driver safety and minimize accident risks, such as fatigue detection systems that alert drivers as drowsiness sets in. In particular, measuring heart rate (HR) patterns may offer valuable insights into the occupant's physiological condition and level of alertness and may allow them to understand their fatigue levels. This review aims to establish the current state of the art of monitoring strategies for vehicle occupants, specifically focusing on fatigue assessed by HR and heart rate variability (HRV). We performed a systematic literature search in the databases of Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, using the terms vehicle, driver, physiologic monitoring, fatigue, sleep, electrocardiogram, heart rate, and heart rate variability. We examined articles published between the 1st of January 2018 and the 31st of January 2023. A total of 294 papers were identified from which 71 articles were included in this study. Among the included papers, 57 utilized electrocardiogram (ECG) as the acquired signal for HR measures, with most ECG readings obtained through contact sensors (n = 41), followed by non-intrusive wearable sensors (n = 11). The majority of the works rely on subjective self-reported fatigue ratings (n = 27) and video-based observer ratings (n = 11). Regarding validation, 16 papers do not report validation of any kind. From the included papers, only 13 comprise a fatigue and drowsiness estimation system, 9 with reported validation. Some report acceptable performances, but reduced sample size limits conclusions. This review highlights the potential of HR analysis and non-intrusive instrumentation for continuously monitoring driver's status and detecting sleepiness. One major issue is the lack of sufficient validation and estimation methods for fatigue, contributing to insufficient methods in providing proactive alarm systems. Driver fatigue significantly impairs performance and is a major risk factor for road crashes. However, fatigue is difficult to objectively measure and quantify. This study aimed to elucidate associations between heart rate variability (HRV) metrics and multidimensional fatigue construct encompassing objective and subjective measures in young drivers with self-reported short sleep. Eighty-four young adults underwent assessments during simulated driving. HRV indices RMSSD and LF/HF ratio were derived from an electrocardiogram, while relative Theta power, oculography drowsiness, lane position variability, and Karolinska Sleepiness Score measured fatigue. RMSSD negatively correlated with Theta power, and LF/HF ratio positively correlated with position variability. Exploratory factor analysis extracted three factors, with RMSSD and LF/HF loading onto one. Structural equation modelling tested the prediction of a latent fatigue construct from HRV. Two models demonstrated an acceptable fit. RMSSD negatively predicted fatigue, explaining 6.4 % of the variance, while the LF/HF ratio positively predicted fatigue, accounting for 3.7 % of the variance. In summary, HRV, particularly RMSSD, showed significant relationships with multidimensional fatigue. Lower RMSSD and higher LF/HF ratio are associated with greater fatigue levels. This study demonstrates that HRV indices exhibit significant relationships within a multidimensional model of fatigue incorporating objective performance, ocular, and subjective measures. The findings provide initial evidence towards using HRV for monitoring complex manifestations of fatigue, rather than single dimensions. The wrapping of the newborn in an orthopedic tubular mesh, simulating a cocoon, can allow the infant to regain the feeling of security and stability experienced in the uterus given that the movement of one of the parts of the body exerts tactile and pressure variation in others. We aimed to evaluate the influence of an orthopedic tubular mesh, simulating a cocoon, in therapeutic positioning, on the variables of the autonomous, motor, and regulatory systems of preterm newborns. A controlled and randomized clinical trial was conducted with preterm newborns positioned in dorsal decubitus and divided into two groups: (a) cocoon – newborns covered with an orthopedic tubular mesh, and (b) control – newborns positioned according to the sector's routine and without the use of an orthopedic mesh. During the follow-up, each newborn was placed in the position for 30 min and was recorded for a total of 2 min, once at the beginning and again at the end of the observation period. Variables related to the autonomous system (heart rate, respiratory rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation), motor system (general movements), and regulatory system (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale) were evaluated before and after the intervention. The videos were evaluated by a researcher blind to the purpose of the study, and the resulting data were analyzed using SPSS. Of the 40 preterm newborns evaluated (32.5 ± 1.83 weeks), 21 were female, and 20 were allocated to the cocoon group. The variables related to the autonomous, motor, and regulatory systems remained unchanged following the positioning in the cocoon, as compared to the typical positioning employed in the neonatal unit. The simulation of a cocoon, utilizing an orthopedic tubular mesh, when applied to preterm newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit can contribute to maintaining low levels of stress, without altering variables of the autonomous, motor, and regulatory systems. Predictive models of psychotic symptoms could improve ecological momentary interventions by dynamically providing help when it is needed. Wearable sensors measuring autonomic arousal constitute a feasible base for predictive models since they passively collect physiological data linked to the onset of psychotic experiences. To explore this potential, we investigated whether changes in autonomic arousal predict the onset of hallucination spectrum experiences (HSE) and paranoia in individuals with an increased likelihood of experiencing psychotic symptoms. For 24 h of ambulatory assessment, 62 participants wore electrodermal activity and heart rate sensors and were provided with an Android smartphone to answer questions about their HSE-, and paranoia-levels every 20 min. We calculated random forests to detect the onset of HSEs and paranoia. The generalizability of our models was tested using leave-one-assessment-out and leave-one-person-out cross-validation. Leave-one-assessment-out models that relied on physiological data and participant ID yielded balanced accuracy scores of 80 % for HSE and 66 % for paranoia. Adding baseline information about lifetime experiences of psychotic symptoms increased balanced accuracy to 82 % (HSE) and 70 % (paranoia). Leave-one-person-out models yielded lower balanced accuracy scores (51 % to 58 %). Using passively collectible variables to predict the onset of psychotic experiences is possible and prediction models improve with additional information about lifetime experiences of psychotic symptoms. Generalizing to new individuals showed poor performance, so including personal data from a recipient may be necessary for symptom prediction. This study aims to compare the acute internal and external loads during different small-sided games (SSG) of young female soccer players. Sixteen female soccer players from a first-team squad of the Turkish third league (mean ± SD: age: 16.1 ± 2.3 years, height: 157.9 ± 5.5 cm, body weight: 55.2 ± 8.2 kg, training age: 4.0 ± 2.3 years) participated in this study voluntarily. 2 vs. 2 (4 bouts of 2 min separated by 2 min of passive recovery), 3 vs. 3 (4 bouts of 3 min separated by 2 min of passive recovery), and 4 vs. 4 (4 bouts of 4 min separated by 2 min of passive recovery). SSGs were played in random order and at least 48 hours apart. During SSGs, heart rate (HR) responses and distances covered in four different speed zones were recorded: Walking (WLK), low (LIR), moderate (MIR), and high-intensity (HIR) running. Moreover, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and blood lactate (La−) responses were determined at the end of each SSG. The results showed that %HRmax responses were significantly lower and La− and RPE responses were significantly higher in 2 vs. 2 SSG compared to other SSG (P < 0.05). Moreover, young female players covered a significantly greater distance in 4 vs. 4 SSG than in 2 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 3 SSGs in terms of WLK, LIR, HIR, and total distances (P < 0.05). The present study showed that coaches and sports scientists could use 2 vs. 2 SSG to improve anaerobic endurance, while 3 vs. 3 and 4 vs. 4 SSGs can help to develop high-intensity aerobic endurance in young female soccer players. To explore sleep structure in participants with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and comorbid insomnia (COMISA) and participants with OSA without insomnia (OSA-only) using both single-night polysomnography and multi-night wrist-worn photoplethysmography/accelerometry. Multi-night 4-class sleep-staging was performed with a validated algorithm based on actigraphy and heart rate variability, in 67 COMISA (23 women, median age: 51 years) and 50 OSA-only (15 women, median age: 51) participants. Sleep statistics were compared using linear regression models and mixed-effects models. Multi-night variability was explored using a clustering approach and between- and within-participant analysis. Polysomnographic parameters showed no significant group differences. Multi-night measurements, during 13.4 ± 5.2 nights per subject, demonstrated a longer sleep onset latency and lower sleep efficiency for the COMISA group. Detailed analysis of wake parameters revealed longer mean durations of awakenings in COMISA, as well as higher numbers of awakenings lasting 5 min and longer (WKN ≥5min) and longer wake after sleep onset containing only awakenings of 5 min or longer. Within-participant variance was significantly larger in COMISA for sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, mean duration of awakenings and WKN ≥5min. Unsupervised clustering uncovered three clusters; participants with consistently high values for at least one of the wake parameters, participants with consistently low values, and participants displaying higher variability. Patients with COMISA more often showed extended, and more variable periods of wakefulness. These observations were not discernible using single night polysomnography, highlighting the relevance of multi-night measurements to assess characteristics indicative for insomnia. • Single-night sleep measurements show limited value in the differentiation between OSA and COMISA. • COMISA patients more often show extended periods of wakefulness over multiple nights. • Combined photoplethysmography and actigraphy can adequately capture these differences. • Multi-night assessment is useful to objectively identify comorbid insomnia and prompt further investigation. The present study assessed the influence of physical training on cardiac autonomic activity in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) during different sleep stages. Twenty-six volunteers were allocated into three groups: 9 sedentary individuals without SCI (control, CON); 8 sedentary tetraplegic individuals with chronic SCI (SED-SCI); 9 physically trained tetraplegic individuals with chronic SCI (TR-SCI). All participants underwent nocturnal polysomnography to monitor sleep stages: wakefulness, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep (N1, N2, and N3 stages), and REM sleep. The electrocardiography data obtained during this exam were extracted to analyze the heart rate variability (HRV). Sleep stages influenced HRV in the time [RR interval and root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD)] and frequency [low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) powers and LF-to-HF ratio] domains (P < 0.05). SED-SCI individuals showed unchanged HRV compared to CON (P > 0.05). When comparing the TR-SCI and SED-SCI groups, no significant differences in HRV were reported in the time domain (P > 0.05). However, in the frequency domain, more accentuated HF power was observed in TR-SCI than in SED-SCI individuals during the N2 and N3 stages and REM sleep (P < 0.05). Moreover, TR-SCI had higher HF power than CON during the N3 stage (P < 0.05). TR-SCI individuals have greater HF power, indicative of parasympathetic modulation, than sedentary (injured or not injured) individuals during different sleep stages. Valvular heart diseases (VHDs) pose a significant public health burden, and deciding the best treatment strategy necessitates accurate assessment of heart valve function. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the key modality to evaluate VHDs, but the lack of standardized quantitative measurements leads to subjective and time-consuming assessments. We aimed to use deep learning to automate the extraction of mitral valve (MV) leaflets and annular hinge points from echocardiograms of the MV, improving standardization and reducing workload in quantitative assessment of MV disease. We annotated the MV leaflets and annulus points in 2931 images from 127 patients. We propose an approach for segmenting the annotated features using Attention UNet with deep supervision and weight scheduling of the attention coefficients to enforce saliency surrounding the MV. The derived segmentation masks were used to extract quantitative biomarkers for specific MV leaflet scallops throughout the heart cycle. Evaluation performance was summarized using a Dice score of 0.63 ± 0.14, annulus error of 3.64 ± 2.53 and leaflet angle error of 8.7 ± 8.3°. Leveraging Attention UNet with deep supervision robustness of clinically relevant metrics was improved compared with UNet, reducing standard deviations by 2.7° (angle error) and 0.73 mm (annulus error). We correctly identified cases of MV prolapse, cases of stenosis and healthy references from a clinical material using the derived biomarkers. Robust deep learning segmentation and tracking of MV morphology and motion is possible by leveraging attention gates and deep supervision, and holds promise for enhancing VHD diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) disorders may occur in skeletal muscle disease, but the link between them has not been fully established. Studying the relationship between them may yield insights into the mechanisms and treatment of disease. This study aimed to explore the association between heart rate variability (HRV), sarcopenia, and subscales of sarcopenia (muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical mobility). 2514 community-dwelling older Chinese participants were included in this study. The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia guidelines were used to define sarcopenia. HRV was measured by 90-s electrocardiogram RR interval data. All HRV parameters were transformed using natural logarithms. Multiple regression analysis and multivariate linear regression was performed using potential correlates. The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 15.1 % (18.5 % in males and 12.6 % in females). In the logistic regression analysis model, there was a significant association between log-transformed standard deviation of RR interval (lnSDNN) (OR = 0.736, p = 0.019), log-transformed coefficient of variation of RR intervals (lnCVRR) (OR = 0.751, p = 0.020), log-transformed low-frequency power (lnLF) (OR = 0.861, p = 0.008), log-transformed high-frequency power (lnHF) (OR = 0.864, p = 0.003) and sarcopenia in the general population after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), daily activity levels, hypertension, heart disease and cardiac drugs. In addition, in multivariate linear regression, lnSDNN (β = 0.146, p = 0.001), lnCVRR (β = 0.120, p = 0.010), lnLF (β = 0.066, p = 0.002) and lnHF (β = 0.065, p < 0.001) remained significantly positively associated with muscle mass, but there were no significant differences in grip strength and walking speed. Sarcopenia was independently associated with lower heart rate variability in a community-dwelling elderly Chinese population. Reduced vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV) has been associated with anxiety disorders (AD). The aim of this study was to use a wearable device and remote study design to re-evaluate the association of HRV with ADs, anxiety-related traits, and confounders. 240 individuals (AD = 120, healthy controls = 120) completed an at-home assessment of their short-term resting vagally-mediated HRV using a wristband, monitored over videoconference. Following quality control, analyses were performed investigating differences in HRV between individuals with AD (n = 119) and healthy controls (n = 116), associations of HRV with anxiety-related traits and confounders, and antidepressants effects on HRV in patients, including analyses stratified by ancestry (i.e., European, East Asian, African). Among the confounders investigated, only age had a significant association with HRV. Patients with an AD had significantly lower vagally-mediated HRV than healthy controls in the European subsample, with a trend of significance in the whole sample. HRV was significantly associated with the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) but not with antidepressant use in the European subsample. The study measures occurred in a non-standardized at-home setting, and the three ancestry group sample sizes were unequal. This study demonstrates reduced vagally-mediated HRV among patients with ADs compared to healthy controls. Results also point to low HRV being related to more physical anxiety symptoms (measured via HAM-A), suggesting a possible anxiety subtype. In view of the mental health issues among adolescents in Singapore, aromatherapy is proposed to mitigate their stress level when studying. An experiment was conducted both in the classroom and home setting, to test the effectiveness of the give odours, lavender, rosemary, ylang-ylang, lemon and bergamot on reducing stress level, using the no odour scenario as control. Objective data (SpO2, heart rate and stress score) is collected using the HUAWEI Band 6 smartwatch. Subjective data was self-reported by the participants through Google forms, rating their emotional health on a 10-point scale and elaborating in prose. It was found that the anti-anxiety effects of the stimulants (lemon, bergamot, rosemary) were much larger than that of the sedatives (lavender, ylang-ylang). In particular, lemon showed the best objective anxiolytic effect, while bergamot was the best in terms of self-perceived effect. Rosemary relieved stress through raising productivity, but some effects of overworking were observed. On the other hand, ylang-ylang showed inconsistent effects, while lavender was not suitable to relieve stress when studying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vaccination is an essential preventative medical intervention, but needle fear and injection pain may result in vaccination hesistancy. To assess the role of magic tricks – no trick vs. one trick („disappearing handkerchief trick") vs. three tricks ("disappearing handkerchief trick", "jumping rubber band trick", and "disappearing ring trick") – performed by a professional magician and pediatrician during routine vaccination in reducing discomfort/pain and the stress response (heart rate, visual analogue scale (VAS), and biomarkers (cortisol, Immunoglobulin A (IgA), α-amylase, and overall protein concentration in saliva before and after vaccination). Randomized controlled trial (RCT) in healthy children aged 6–11 years undergoing routine vaccination in an outpatient setting. 50 children (26 female) were enrolled (no trick: n = 17, 1 trick: n = 16, 3 tricks: n = 17) with a median age of 6.9 years (range: 5.3–10.8 years). We detected no significant differences among the three groups in their stress reponse (heart rate before and after vaccination and cortisol, IgA, α-amylase, and overall protein concentrations in saliva before and after vaccination) or regarding pain assessment using the VAS. Although children undergoing routine outpatient vaccination appeared to enjoy a magician's presence, the concomitant performance of magic tricks revealed no significant effect on the stress response.
