30. Nurses' knowledge and practice regarding venous-thromboembolism prevention in tertiary hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

Abstract

• Although nurses are in a vital position to prevent VTE-related complications, the extent to which they practice VTE prevention is still in its infancy across developing countries. • Nurses' inadequate level of knowledge and practice on prevention of venous thromboembolism could increase frequent hospitalization and ultimately lead to poor healthcare outcome. • Improving nurses' knowledge and practice in VTE prevention is crucial for patient safety and positive outcome. • Identification and management of barriers can optimize nurses' impact on the prevention of VTE-related complications. The prevalence of venous thromboembolism is steadily increasing in developing nations including Ethiopia. Nurses play a vital role in the prevention of venous thromboembolism. However, the level of nurses' knowledge, practice, and associated factors in venous thromboembolism prevention is not well-known across Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess nurses' knowledge, practice, and associated factors regarding venous-thromboembolism prevention in tertiary Hospitals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 339 randomly selected nurses working at tertiary hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 25. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to describe and test the association between selected variables. Out of the total 339 participants, only (51.6%) and (45.4%) had adequate knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention respectively. Attending in-service training (AOR=1.701, p = 0.044) was significantly associated with knowledge of VTE prevention. Educational level (AOR= 3.871, P = 0.048), work experience (AOR=5.207, P<0.001), work location (AOR= 0.507, P = 0.019), working department (AOR= 2.959, P = 0.048), knowledge level (AOR= 0.477, P=0.005) were significantly associated with better preventive practice. This study suggests that nurses' level of knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention was inadequate. Nurses' educational level, attending in-service training, work experience, work location, and working department were determinant factors associated with nurses' knowledge and practice towards venous thromboembolism prevention. Therefore, upgrading nurses' educational level and providing in-service training on venous thromboembolism prevention is crucial for positive patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Impact of pharmacist-led interventions on medication-related problems among patients treated for cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials.

Abstract

Medication-related problems (MRPs) continue to impose a voluminous health impact, particularly among patients on anti-cancer therapy, due to the nature and complexity of the care. Pharmacists have a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, effective, and rational use of medicines in this group of patients. To examine the impact of pharmacist-led interventions in resolving MRPs among patients treated for cancer. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted and reported following the PRISMA protocol and registered in PROSPERO (Registration number: CRD42022311535). Four database searches, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and International Pharmaceuticals Abstracts, were systematically searched from August 2022 to January 2023. Only randomized control trials (RCTs) were included. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to check the quality of the included studies. The outcome measures were overall MRPs, adherence, medication errors, and adverse drug events (ADEs). Data for meta-analysis were analyzed used using STATA version 17 and standardized mean difference effect sizes were calculated for continuous outcomes and odds ratio for categorical outcomes. Out of the 90 studies screened for eligibility, 20 RCT studies were included for the systematic review and 15 for the meta-analysis. Close to two-thirds of the studies were from Europe (n = 7) and Asia (n = 6). A combination of educational and behavioral intervention strategies were used for a period ranged from 8 days to 12 months. The pharmacist-led intervention improved adherence to treatment by 4.79 times (AOR = 4.79; 95%CI = 2.64, 8.68; p -value<0.0001), reduced the occurrence of ADEs by 1.28 (SMD = −1.28; 95%CI = −0.04-2.52; p -value = 0.04) and decreased the overall MRPs by 0.53 (SMD = −0.53; 95%CI = −0.79, −0.28; p -value<0.0001) compared to control groups. This study found out that pharmacist-led interventions can significantly lower MRPs among patients treated for cancer. Abstract

• Birth month in respect of RSV season plays an important role in the incidence of RSV-hospitalization. • Infants born preterm have a disproportional burden of severe RSV. • Timing and duration of a monoclonal antibody program is sensitive to a country's RSV season. Respiratory syncytial virus contributes to significant global infant morbidity and mortality. We applied a previously developed statistical prediction model incorporating pre-pandemic RSV testing data and hospital admission data to estimate infant RSV-hospitalizations by birth month and prematurity, focused on infants aged <1 year. The overall predicted RSV-hospitalization incidence rates in infants <6 months were 32.7/1,000 child-years (95 % CI: 31.8, 33.5) and 3.1/1,000 child-years (95 % CI: 3.0, 3.1) in infants aged 6-<12 months. Predicted RSV-hospitalization rates for infants aged <6 months were highest for infants born in April/May. Predicted rates for preterm infants born 29–32 weeks gestation were highest in March-May, whereas infants born >33 weeks had peak RSV-hospitalization rates from May-June, similar to late preterm or term births. RSV-hospitalization rates in the pre-pandemic era were highly seasonal, and seasonality varied with degree of prematurity. Accurate estimates of RSV-hospitalization in high-risk sub-groups are essential to understand preventable burden of RSV especially given the current prevention landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
