In this paper, sedimentological and geochemical data from six cores are presented and discussed in order to better understand the Holocene palaeoenvironmental evolution of the coastal plains of the Pecora and Cornia Rivers (southern Tuscany, Italy). Overall, the stratigraphies show a general upward trend in the evolution of the sedimentary succession of lagoonal environments (low Zr/Rb, high EC values) connected or partially connected to the sea (low EC values), to a seaward progradation of marshy-swampy environments (Mn/Ti, high TOC values) and finally to continental environments with the progradation of distal alluvial plains (high Zr/Rb, low EC values) influenced by runoff phenomena or local water stagnation. This trend is closely related to the increasing input of sediments from inland due to soil erosion processes and, especially in the last two centuries, land reclamation works. In the Cornia coastal plain, the chronologies indicate that lagoonal environments were already present before ca. 8.2ka BC and started receding seaward at around 3.7ka BC. On the other hand, chronologies from ca. 0.5ka BC to ca. 0.6ka AD point to a persistence of lagoonal environments only in areas very close to those already identified as such in historical cartography. In the Pecora coastal plain, the chronologies show that the lagoon environments had already disappeared before ca. 3.3ka BC, whilst the peripheral environments were characterised by abundant vegetation. The latter gradually degraded in favour of the development of shallow to very deep, unvegetated marshlands, which persisted until ca. 1ka AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present bulk-rock and mineral Fe isotope data of ultramafic to mafic xenoliths and basaltic to andesitic lavas from Adagdak Volcano (Adak Island, Central Aleutians) to study the effects of early differentiation on the Fe isotopic evolution of island arc basalts and their crystallization products. The Fe isotope composition of ultramafic cumulate xenoliths increases from dunite (δ56Fe = –0.09 to –0.02 ‰) to clinopyroxenite (δ56Fe = +0.06 to +0.09 ‰), consistent with higher modal proportions of clinopyroxene (δ56Fe = –0.05 to +0.11 ‰) relative to olivine (δ56Fe = –0.10 to +0.06 ‰) in the latter. Mid-crustal cumulate amphibole gabbro and hornblendite cumulates also record heavier Fe isotope compositions (δ56Fe = +0.04 to +0.08 ‰) due to the abundance of isotopically heavy amphibole (δ56Fe = +0.07 to +0.09 ‰) and magnetite (δ56Fe = +0.11 to +0.13 ‰) in these rocks. High inter-mineral fractionations observed in spinel-olivine and spinel-clinopyroxene pairs (Δ56Fe spl-ol = +0.12 to +0.28 and Δ56Fe spl-cpx = +0.06 to +0.19) suggest that spinel is not recording equilibrium crystallization conditions for the ultramafic assemblages, likely due to subsolidus Fe-Mg exchange. Our data also include Fe isotope measurements of one mantle dunite (δ56Fe = +0.03 ± 0.05 ‰). Five Adagdak lavas, spanning from basalts to andesites, yield a narrow range of δ56Fe between +0.03 and +0.06 ‰. Our results highlight the potential of amphibole in driving the Fe isotope depletion trends observed in many erupted arc lavas, as amphibole hosts 28–99 % of the FeO T budget in the amphibole gabbro and hornblendite cumulates. This is also supported by single-crystal synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy of two amphibole grains, the first from an amphibole gabbro and the second from a hornblendite, which yield Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of 0.55 ± 0.06 and 0.58 ± 0.02, respectively. Water content and hydrogen isotope compositions determined by secondary-ion mass spectrometry from the same amphibole grains indicate partial dehydrogenation. Using Rayleigh fractionation modeling to account for oxidation during post-crystallization dehydrogenation, we calculate magmatic Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of 0.41 ± 0.04 for the amphibole gabbro and 0.30 ± 0.05 for the hornblendite. These data are then used to estimate an appropriate Fe force constant for Adagdak amphibole and quantitatively evaluate the effects of amphibole fractionation. Through a fractional crystallization model, we show how arc melts may experience periods of increasing δ56Fe during olivine-dominated fractionation, followed by decreasing δ56Fe once magnetite and amphibole saturate as cumulate phases. Notably, this dichotomy between fractionation of isotopically light versus heavy cumulate assemblages and its effects on the Fe isotope evolution of arc magmas is not captured by the Adagdak lava record, highlighting the utility of cumulates in chronicling the early isotopic evolution of magmatic systems. Coastal aeolian deposits are product of the coupling between aerodynamics and coastal hydrodynamics, which is of great significance for reconstructing aeolian activities and the coastal environmental change. Here, we investigated the coastal aeolian deposits on Changxing Island, northeastern China, using geochemistry and microscopy of the minerals together with the published sedimentological data. The results showed that aeolian deposits are mainly derived from beach sands reworked by wind. Previously published Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating results show that the deposition ages of the aeolian deposits are 41 ka, 49 ka, and 67 ka, respectively. The sedimentologic and geochemistry of aeolian deposits are sensitive to climate change. Notably, the micromorphology structure of the surface of quartz sand particles reveals the process of the coastal environment evolution. ∼41 ka, the surface of the grains is characterized by significant subaqueous environments, showing subangular with high relief, large conchoidal fracture, and V-shaped pits. These features correspond to the early sub-interstadial stage of MIS3, characterized by a warm and humid climate and sea level highstand. Under the relative sea level rise, the high rate of sand supply produced by coastal erosion contribute to aeolian deposit formation. In contrast, at 49 ka and 67 ka, the quartz grain exhibits typical aeolian environment features that exhibits subrounded with low relief, upturned plates, and dish-shaped pits, which respond to glacial periods of cold and windy conditions and sea level lowstand. The exposure of abundant sandy material, coupled with lower vegetation cover and strong East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) contribute to higher sediment availability and sand accumulation. A multi-proxy study of biotic and abiotic components was conducted on surface sediment samples from six lakes/wetlands located along the western transitional boundary of the contemporary Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) in the Indian Subcontinent. The primary goal is to assess the suitability of various proxies as representatives of modern vegetation, environmental and climatic conditions. The collected data indicate significant variations in the composition and density of pollen in response to climate-induced and anthropogenic ecological changes throughout the northwest India transect. The palynological studies from eastern Rajasthan shows high forest elements in comparison to western Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. In addition, the palynological data was juxtaposed with other biotic proxies such as diatom and isotopic studies, along with geochemical proxies and paleomagnetic data of the surface lake sediments. The presence of marker pollen taxa including Cerealia type Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Brassicaceae, allows for distinct recognition of anthropogenic activities throughout the whole transect. The diversity and distribution of diatoms also support the palynological data in response to climate-induced and anthropogenic ecological changes. Furthermore, grain size, geochemistry (TOC/TN ratio with stable carbon isotope), and magnetic susceptibility data offer crucial insights about the sediment's depositional settings and general mineralogical composition. Stable carbon isotope data shows C 3 dominance in relatively humid areas and C 4 dominance in semi-arid areas, suggesting climate-driven control over sediment organic matter composition. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicates that biotic variables (pollen, diatom, stable isotopic composition) are significantly controlled by modern precipitation and temperature. Redundancy analysis reveals a significant influence of current average temperature and precipitation on major element oxide variations in surface lake sediments. Therefore, we propose using palynological, stable carbon isotope, diatom data, along with grain size, environmental magnetism, and geochemistry, to establish a multiproxy modern analogue for quantitative palaeoclimatic reconstructions. As a result, this study provides the first modern analogues from a climate-sensitive region that separates the area under ISM influence from an area with meager precipitation in western India. The EPFL Spacecraft Team (EST) is working on the Constellation of High-Performance Exospheric Science Satellites (CHESS) mission, which aims to launch a constellation of two CubeSats in 2027. These CubeSats will study the chemical composition of Earth's exosphere using time-of-flight mass spectrometry. To downlink the collected scientific data, the satellites will utilise a custom X-band transceiver, presented in this paper, operating in the amateur frequency range of 10.45 GHz to 10.50 GHz. The proposed transceiver architecture employs Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technology and can be easily adapted for different use cases. Magnetotelluric imaging of a lithospheric-scale boundary in central Australia has been used to support a model of collision between the North Australian Craton and an exotic continental ribbon referred to as the Warumpi Province during the late Paleoproterozoic Liebig Orogeny (c. 1640 Ma). This idea of collision has become an important element to reconstructions of late Paleoproterozoic Australia. In this study, we present mineral equilibria forward models from c. 1640 Ma metamorphic rocks to delineate the thermal regime associated with the Liebig Orogeny. Liebig-aged cordierite–orthopyroxene–biotite–quartz–plagioclase–K-feldspar–ilmenite–magnetite assemblages constrain peak metamorphic conditions to 4–5 kbar and 770–800 °C. These conditions are indicative of a high geothermal gradient regime and the mineral assemblage evolution shows no evidence for significant pressure changes that would generally support a crustal thickening model. Detrital zircon age spectra for the metasediments in the assumed exotic crust are broadly similar to the age record in the Aileron Province in the southern part of the North Australian Craton. Furthermore, εNd and εHf isotopic data of Liebig-aged granitic rocks make it permissible that they are derived from melting of North Australian Craton crust. This suggests the Warumpi Province was not exotic to the North Australian Craton and was instead a part of it. On the basis of the shared history between the Warumpi and Aileron Provinces and the newly constrained thermal character of c. 1640 Ma metamorphism, we suggest the Liebig Orogeny was characterised by extensional deformation of the North Australian Craton in the upper plate above a southward retreating subduction system. Tectonically, the Liebig Orogeny is interpreted to record a back-arc regime characterised by sedimentation, mafic and felsic magmatism, and predominantly contact metamorphism, and represents the continuation of a long-lived (c. 200 Ma) upper plate system that dictated the evolution of the North Australian Craton during the late Paleoproterozoic. [Display omitted] • The Investigator Ridge is a transverse ridge along a large-offset fracture zone. • Mid-ocean ridge magmatism recorded from 100 to 83 Ma by Ar-Ar dating. • DUPAL upper mantle evolved from SCLM admixtures to C-like additions with time. The Investigator Ridge, located along the prominent Investigator Fracture Zone in the Wharton Basin, northeast Indian Ocean, was chosen to investigate the temporal and geochemical evolution of the Indian upper mantle. We present new 40Ar/39Ar age, as well as major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope data, from a large part of this so far scarcely sampled ridge. The 40Ar/39Ar ages range from 100.0 Ma to 64.1 Ma, and except for the two youngest samples (65.5 and 64.1 Ma) of likely Christmas Island Seamount Province (CHRISP) origin, display decreasing ages along the ridge from south to north. This pattern is consistent with the ages derived from paleomagnetic anomalies on the local oceanic crust that also decrease in age northwards and suggests an origin of the studied rocks at or near the now extinct Wharton spreading center. These ages also provide information about the displacements along the multiple Investigator Fracture Zones indicating large left-lateral as well as right-lateral offsets of the paleo spreading axis. The fracture zone also shows signs of recent tectonic reactivation. The Investigator Ridge samples are derived from a DUPAL-like mantle source similar to present-day Indian MORB. This source contains a depleted mantle type component, an enriched, moderately HIMU-like, component such as common "C" or "FOZO", and an additional enriched component of recycled subcontinental lithospheric mantle material. In both the Investigator Ridge and CHRISP samples, the trace element and isotope compositions systematically change with age implying a temporal geochemical evolution of the Indian Mantle Domain in this region. It contained higher proportions of subcontinental lithospheric material delaminated during breakup of Gondwana and mixed with depleted upper mantle material in its early phase. With time, the source evolved in the direction of "C" or "FOZO", which then became the dominant enriched component and is observed in the youngest samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reveal its c. 550 Ma Cadomian origin. • The UAE Neoproterozoic basement is part of the Omani tectonic domain. • Application of apatite as petrochronological tool can help tracking orogenic cycle. The thick Phanerozoic sedimentary cover lying above the Arabian Platform conceals extensive basement between the western Neoproterozoic domains of the Arabian Nubian Shield (ANS) and of the eastern Omani basement. The Neoproterozoic rocks entrained within salt domes that crop out within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar are the only direct samples that allow us to investigate the tectonic history of the concealed Arabian basement domains before c. 550 Ma. This study focuses on the U-Pb geochronological and REE geochemical analysis of detrital zircon, apatite, titanite and rutile grains from the Zirku turbidites brought to the surface by halokinetic movements offshore UAE. These data are compared with new U-Pb and REE data from detrital heavy minerals of three metasedimentary members of the Omani Neoproterozoic Hatat Formation collected in the Saih Hatat window. The Omani metasedimentary units yield detrital titanite, zircon and apatite U–Pb ages that span from c. 2500 to 690 Ma, with an age maxima at c. 850 Ma, while the UAE unit yield ages from c. 2550 to 550 Ma with major age peaks at c. 1000, 820, 650 Ma. The analysis of the Omani stratigraphic sequence in the Saih Hatat window revealed that the rocks of the Neoproterozoic Hatat Formation yield similar age distributions of the Abu Mahara Group (lower Huqf Supergroup, exposed in central and southern Oman), and that the REE geochemical composition of the Hatat detrital apatite grains shares akin REE signature with the c. 550 detrital apatite of the Zirku Formation, with both being sourced from volcanic-arcs. These new geochronological and geochemical data, together with recent geophysical evidences, suggest that the basement of the UAE is originally part of the Oman tectonic domain and evolved as part of a volcanic-arc in an active margin at c. 550 Ma, which we interpret as part of the retro -arc of the Cadomian collision in between the Arabian and the Cadomian Taurides, Iran and Afghanistan terranes. The Moon's mare volcanism predominantly occurs within the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT), which is widely thought to be associated with KREEP components within the lunar interior. The Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission sampled a young (2 Ga) mare basalt Em4/P58 unit of northern Oceanus Procellarum. The geochemistry of the CE-5 mare basalt enables assessment of mantle source compositions which are essential to understand the thermo-chemical mechanism for prolonged volcanism during secular cooling of the Moon. Geochemical compositions of the CE-5 bulk soil, breccias, and basalt clasts from various depths within the drill core consistently display high concentrations of incompatible trace elements (ITE: ∼ 0.3 × high-K KREEP; ∼ 5 μg/g Th) with KREEP-like inter-element ratios, for example for La/Sm, Nb/Ta, and Zr/Y. Exotic impact ejecta, extensive magma differentiation (<70 % fractional crystallization) and significant assimilation of KREEP materials during magma transit and eruption cannot account for the ITE contents and ratios or radiogenic isotope compositions (e.g., εNd initial of + 8 to + 9 and εHf initial of + 40 to + 46) of the CE-5 basalts; instead, partial melting of their mantle source played a dominant role. The Chang'e-5 basalt is a chemically evolved low-Ti mare basalt (Mg# of ∼ 34) with enriched KREEP-like ITE compositions but high long-term time-integrated Sm/Nd and Lu/Hf ratios, which represent a hitherto unsampled type of mare basalt. It formed by melting of an augite-rich mantle source (late-stage magma ocean cumulates containing > 30–60 % augite, and little or no ilmenite), with a small amount of late-stage interstitial melt that resembles KREEP (∼1–1.5 modal %, equivalent to 0.2–0.3 μg/g Th in the mantle source). The voluminous mare basalts making up the Em4/P58 unit (>1500 km3) provide compelling evidence for large-scale, ITE enriched young mare magmatism within Oceanus Procellarum. In combination with remote sensing data and with the unique Th-rich Apollo 12 basalt fragment 12032,366–18 (impact ejecta likely from Oceanus Procellarum), this implies that significant portions of the FeO- and Th-rich mare regions of the western PKT may also have formed in a similar way. Proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) are appealing for low-to-intermediate temperature operation due to their intrinsic lower activation energy and better ionic conductivity. Unfortunately, there are currently few acceptable and high-performing cathode materials available for H-SOFCs. Herein, we present a novel high performance multicomponent Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type cathode Pr 3 Ni 1.5 Cu 0.3 Nb 0.05 Ta 0.05 Zr 0.05 Y 0.05 O 7-δ (PNCNTZY) with superior triple conducting property. The multicomponent co-doping of Nb, Ta, Zr, and Y brings about the enhancement of configurational entropy and cocktail effect for improving H+/O2-/e- triple conductivity and oxygen vacancy concentration. Naturally, the ORR activity is improved by facilitated charge transfer and oxygen surface exchange, exhibiting reduced polarization resistance to just 0.24 Ω cm2 at 550 °C. When used as the cathode in H-SOFC single cells, excellent power production is demonstrated at 550 °C, with a peak power density of up to 0.84 W cm-2. Furthermore, the PNCNTZY sample shows adequate thermal compatibility with proton conductor electrolytes BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) and then appropriate endurance durability (0.8 A cm-2 at 550 °C for about 250 h) due to their match of thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) brought about by the Co-free and partial replacement of larger-size elements. This extremely promising Co-free RP perovskite cathode for H-SOFCs produced by this work might provide a new type candidate and novel strategy for the commercialization of H-SOFCs. Developing cathodes that are both phase-stable and tolerant to carbon dioxide (CO 2) is a crucial and challenging task for solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operating at reduced temperatures. The activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in SOFC cathodes is typically influenced by factors such as geometric features and oxygen vacancies. In this study, new and robust cathodes for SOFCs, Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.4 Ta 0.1 O 5+δ (SCFT) and Sr 2 Co 1.5 Fe 0.4 Nb 0.1 O 5+δ (SCFN) are developed by doping a small amount of niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) into Sr 2 Co 1.6 Fe 0.4 O 5+δ (SCF) using a simple solid-state reaction technique. The effects of Nb/Ta doping on the crystal structure, oxygen vacancies, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical properties of SCFT and SCFN are investigated. The results reveal that these materials possess a fully cubic structure in the Fm-3m space group, with improved oxygen vacancy and electrical conductivity. They also exhibit good chemical compatibility with electrolytes at 1100 °C for 8 h and remain thermally stable when exposed to air and CO 2 at 700 °C, without any additional phase formation. The area-specific resistance (ASR) of the SCFT cathode is found to be only 0.06 Ω cm2, whereas the SCFN cathode has an ASR of 0.10 Ω cm2. The superior performance of SCFT can be attributed to the higher oxygen vacancy, which enhances oxygen surface exchange kinetics and diffusivity compared to SCFN. When tested in a single cell using humidified H 2 as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant, the SCFT cathode achieves a power density of 656 mW cm−2 at 700 °C, while the SCFN cathode reaches 559 mW cm−2, indicating the potential of SCFT as a promising cathode material for SOFCs. The excellent performance of these materials can be attributed to their mixed electronic-ionic conduction properties, unique structural features, and high observed oxygen vacancy, which contribute to their remarkable electronic conductivity and significant ionic mobility. Ancient faecal material is becoming a highly valuable more frequently investigated proxy with which to address a wide range of research questions. With advancing scientific methodologies it is becoming easier to identify and to analyse. The aim of this paper is to use a set of archaeological and ethnographic case studies to illustrate and evaluate the range of methods that can be used in conjunction with each other to aid investigation of archaeological faecal material. This multi-scalar and multi-method approach uses portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF), spot sampling and smear slide analysis, micromorphology, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), environmental scanning microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (ESEM-EDX), and phytolith analysis. The case studies presented here focus on the Neolithic because of this unique opportunity to examine concentrations of animal dung from managed or early domesticated herds. This research illustrates a range of the methods that can be used in conjunction with each other to locate, identify and analyse faecal material. The results demonstrate that an integrated, multi-scalar, multi-methodological approach enables detection, identification, and investigation of a range of faecal attributes and provides new insights into key issues and themes on environment, animal management, diet, health, the built environment and energy sources. This integrated methodology and pilot study highlights two main recommendations. Firstly, modern faecal comparative material should always be consulted within the study region as a baseline for identifying and classifying different types of faecal material. Secondly, micromorphology and GC-MS samples are always vital proxies in further investigations to confirm the nature and identity of the dung sources once potential sample locations have been identified. The distribution and activity of polyphosphate-accumulating sulfide oxidizing bacteria within marine sediments control the spatial distribution of sedimentary phosphorite formation in the modern ocean. In modern phosphogenetic settings, the concerted effect of microbial sulfide oxidation and microbial sulfate reduction in sediment pore waters is preserved in the sulfur isotope composition of trace sulfate in authigenic and early-stage diagenetic carbonate cements and phosphatic cements, as well as that of authigenic pyrite. If such variations in microbial sulfur metabolism controlled the spatial distribution of early phosphate mineralization in the geologic past, then one would expect to find differences between the sulfur isotope composition of cement-forming minerals in phosphatic and non-phosphatic facies of ancient sedimentary phosphate deposits. Here, we present paired measurements of the sulfur isotope composition of structural sulfate and structural sulfide in pore cements from co-occurring phosphatic and non-phosphatic facies of the Ediacaran Salitre Formation (Northeastern Brazil). The difference between δ34S of trace structural sulfate in carbonate cements (CAS) or phosphate cements (PAS) and δ34S of structural sulfide in pyrite or chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS), defined as Δ34S, provides a constraint on sulfur cycling within the pore waters from which the cements precipitated. In carbonate-cemented textures of the Salitre Formation, Δ34S = 12 to 31 ‰. In phosphate-cemented textures, however, PAS and pyrite crystals had more similar sulfur isotope compositions: Δ34S = −5–12 ‰. These values support the hypothesis that microbial sulfide oxidation was more prevalent in pore waters where phosphate mineralization occurred compared to pore waters where carbonate mineralization occurred – suggesting that microbial sulfide oxidation may have enabled the formation of sedimentary phosphorite on an Ediacaran carbonate platform, just as in modern phosphogenetic sites. The carbonatite-related Nb deposits of the Alto Paranaíba Igneous Province (APIP) in central Brazil, currently account for ∼92 % of the global Nb production. In the APIP, pyrochlore is abundant in magnetite–apatite–tetraferriphlogopite ± carbonate rocks or phoscorites, occurring as interbedded layers with carbonatites in the lower hypogene zone, feeding dike swarms of phoscorite and calcite carbonatite, and late-stage carbothermal veins in the upper hypogene zone. The origin of the phoscorite-carbonatite association can be explained by three hypotheses: (1) crystal segregation from fractional crystallization, (2) liquid immiscibility, and/or (3) phoscoritic magma formation after basement metasomatism (fenitization). However, it is not well understood whether pyrochlore formation is limited to a carbonatitic event, carbohydrothermal, or both, and this gap of knowledge is addressed in this work. To investigate the petrogenesis of pyrochlore-rich phoscorite, cathodoluminescence (CL) images, chemical maps, and LA-ICP-MS data were acquired of pyrochlore crystals from magmatic and carbothermal rocks from the Boa Vista Nb mine, Catalão II Complex. In the Boa Vista mine, oscillatory and patchy zoning were identified as primary pyrochlore textures commonly recorded at the lower hypogene zone, while secondary dissolution, skeletal and zonation-free textures are registered at shallower depths in the upper hypogene zone. Calciopyrochlore is the dominant Nb phase at the Boa Vista mine, with only two kenopyrochlore outliers. The pyrochlore CI chondrite-normalized REE distribution is consistent with geochemical results of the carbonatite and phoscorite rocks, indicating a magmatic origin for pyrochlore and the presence of pyrochlore antecrysts in carbothermal veins. The Sr/Y vs La and Na vs Ce diagrams in pyrochlore indicate a continuous fractionation pattern, with some mixtures of antecrysts and primary phases. An examination of intercumulus calcite using CL provide evidence of carbonatitic magma residues within tetraferriphlogopite phoscorite dikes and suggests that alkaline–carbonate-rich fluids played a role in transporting heavy minerals (i.e., magnetite, apatite, pyrochlore). Consequently, the textural and chemical evidence in the Boa Vista Nb mine indicates that the origin of pyrochlore-rich phoscorites is the result of physical segregation of heavy minerals from a carbonatite magma by fractional crystallization, leading to the emplacement of pyrochlore-rich carbonatite and phoscorite dikes. The implications at Catalão II may extend to other APIP alkaline-carbonatite complexes, as they share a genetic connection, and should motivate further studies focusing on pyrochlore geochemistry in other carbonatite-related Nb deposits, which will be crucial for advancing our knowledge of global Nb metallogenesis. The evolution and functioning of various tropical ecosystems is poorly understood due to a lack of quantitative techniques to characterize the physicochemical composition of soils and sediment. Here, a detailed multi-method study of lithological changes is provided from a core taken from the silted-up Dibi subsidence lake (central Cameroon). To unravel the provenance of sediment, mineral constituents, and organic matter sources, an array of tools are applied including a spectrophotometer, a laser particle sizer, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, and an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) instruments. The studied core consists of light-colored deposits at the base (Unit 1) overlain by dark humic deposits (Unit 2). The sediment is very well graded (grading index Sd < 0.35Ф), indicative of bottom suspended to rolling transport. Unit 1 is characterized by relatively low values of total organic carbon (TOC: 2%–5%) whereas the dark Unit 2 has high contents of TOC (10%–33%). The core shows a high oxygen index (OI) value (average = 207 mg carbon dioxide (CO 2)/g TOC) and a low hydrogen index (HI) value (average = 107 mg hydrocarbon (HC)/g TOC). This indicates highly altered organic matter (OM), likely from decomposed terrestrial plants. The chlorophyll-α fingerprint (peak around 675 nm) also reveals an autochtonous primary production of organic matter. The mineralogical assemblage of Unit 2 comprises kaolinite, quartz, feldspars, montmorillonite, ilmenite, siderite, gibbsite, rutile, and anatase whereas that of Unit 1 is similar but differs with the presence of illite and the absence of gibbsite. The high titanium dioxide (TiO 2) and zirconium (Zr) contents confirm that the source rocks also are comprised of granites, and gneiss without volcanic rocks, such as basalts and trachytes. The source rocks have been intensively weathered using some parameters such as ln(Al 2 O 3 /Na 2 O), K 2 O/Rb, K/Al, and weathering indices, where Al 2 O 3 denotes aluminum oxide, Na 2 O denotes sodium oxide, K 2 O denotes potassium oxide, Rb denotes rubidium, K denotes potassium, and Al denotes aluminum. The enrichment factors (EF) of redox-sensitive trace elements and their relation with TOC, the negative values of manganese/iron ratio (Mn∗) associated to three elemental ratios (cupper/zinc (Cu/Zn), thorium/uranium (Th/U), and vanadium/chromium (V/Cr)) attest to the predominance of sub-oxic to anoxic bottom waters in Dibi lake during sediment deposition. The data also show low primary productivity at the base of the core, followed by an increase towards the top, linked to the intensification of weathering and facilitated by humid climatic conditions, usually increase terrestrial input and palaeoproductivity. The petrological data show a generally warm and humid palaeoclimate. This climatic variation has contributed to the large spread of the savannah and disappearance of the forest. The Proto-Tethys Ocean was a Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic ocean that opened upon the breakup of Rodinia and closed by Paleozoic oceanic and continental subduction. The Qilian orogenic belt is the northernmost orogen of the Proto-Tethys domain and consists of the North Qilian belt, the Central Qilian block and the South Qilian belt. The processes responsible for extensive early Paleozoic magmatism in the Qilian orogen are crucial to understanding the closure of the ocean. This paper presents a systematic investigation of early Paleozoic mafic and felsic rocks in the Qilian orogen. Gabbroic dikes from the Central Qilian block have LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages of 499–497 Ma with a wide range of εHf (t) values of −9.94 to + 4.28 and T DM1 model ages of 1557–929 Ma, and dioritic dikes have a LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb age of 489 ± 3 Ma, positive εHf (t) values of +7.61 to +10.53, T DM1 model ages of 684–790 Ma, and an amphibole 40Ar/39Ar age of 486.3 ± 4.3 Ma. Both sets of dikes were derived from partial melting of a heterogeneous spinel-facies lherzolite lithospheric mantle that was modified by fluids and melts from a subducted slab. The protolith of amphibolites from the Hualong block in the South Qilian belt was a mafic intrusion of 454 ± 2 Ma with negative εHf (t) values of −9.69 to −7.79 and T DM1 model ages of 1390–1478 Ma. Its trace element signature indicates that sediment-derived melts were involved in the magma formation. An amphibole 40Ar/39Ar age of 418.7 ± 3.8 Ma from an amphibolite records the timing of amphibolite facies metamorphism. Felsic volcanic tuffs and granitic intrusions from the Central Qilian block have zircon U-Pb ages of 507–440 Ma with a broad range of zircon εHf (t) values of −9.60 to + 11.87 and T DM2 model ages of 2037–584 Ma. They have geochemical characteristics similar to I-type and S-type granites that were sourced from partial melting of juvenile and ancient continental crust with minor input of mantle materials. The formation of the felsic rocks indicates the transition from an arc-related setting to a post-collisional setting. Combining our results with existing data, we suggest that the Central Qilian block was affected by both southward subduction of the North Qilian ocean and the northward subduction of the South Qilian ocean, resulting in the formation of an Andean-type continental arc along the northern margin of the Central Qilian block and a subduction-accretion system along the southern margin of the Hualong block at ca. 530–440 Ma. As an international frontier topic, whether the Solonker suture zone is the site of final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and records the terminal evolution of the CAOB in Inner Mongolia is still in controversial. This study presents the geochemistry and zircon U-Pb-Hf isotopes of granitoids along the Solonker suture zone to constrain the subduction and closure processes of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. Granitoids from the Xilinhot area in the northern accretionary zone comprise diorites and granodiorites with LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb ages of 316 ± 2 Ma, 302 ± 2 Ma, 285 ± 2 Ma and 243 ± 4 Ma, positive εHf (t) values of +2.39 to +13.31 and T DM2 model ages of 481–1191 Ma. The ca. 316–285 Ma granitoids were formed by fractional crystallization of regional coeval calc-alkaline basaltic magma in an arc-related setting and the ca. 243 Ma granitoid was generated mainly from partial melting of dominant basaltic source rocks and minor metagraywackes in the northward subduction-related setting. The granitoids from the Linxi area in the southern accretionary zone include muscovite monzogranites and monzogranites with LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb ages of 525 ± 6 Ma, 274 ± 2 Ma and 261 ± 4 Ma. The ca. 525 Ma muscovite monzogranites have negative zircon εHf (t) values of −19.36 to −13.61 with T DM2 model ages of 2348–2711 Ma. They were generated from partial melting of Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic supracrustal materials. The ca. 274–261 Ma monzogranites show negative zircon εHf (t) values ranging from −10.48 to −0.66 with T DM2 model ages of 1335–1942 Ma. They were derived from remelting of Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic supracrustal materials in the southward subduction zone along the northern active margin of the North China Craton. Combining our results with existing data, we infer that the early Paleozoic southward subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean started before ca. 525 Ma, and the northward subduction zone lasted to ca. 243 Ma, which implies the bidirectional subduction of the ocean lasted at least until ca. 243 Ma. Reflectance spectroscopy is a rapid and non-destructive technique for probing the chemical composition of the earth surface. The minerals are characterised by absorption features whose wavelength is function of its crystal chemistry. In the present study, we propose a covariance weighted least square inversion approach to model the wavelength position of the absorption features. The approach takes into consideration the noise in the reflectance spectra and estimates the wavelength position with root mean square value of less than 5 nm for library spectra. The algorithm is then implemented on AVIRIS-NG datasets of Hutti-Maski schist belt to map the spatial variations in wavelength position of absorption features in wavelength range 2290–2360 nm. Sensitivity of model parameters to number of points, effect of number of data points on striping noise and limitations of the proposed algorithm are also discussed. It is observed that the algorithm based wavelength map is smooth and enables identification of gradients in absorption wavelength position. Mapping of such gradients are very important for understanding subtle changes in crystal chemistry due to hydrothermal alteration and possible mineralization. Natural hydrogen has generated great interest as a potential clean and renewable energy source. To understand the occurrence of natural hydrogen, 103 1-m deep soil gas samples were acquired near the San Andreas Fault at Jasper Ridge and Portola Valley, California, USA. The gas samples were analyzed for hydrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, light hydrocarbons, and fixed gas concentrations. Statistical data analysis was carried out to group samples, reveal their spatial distribution, and understand possible sources of the gases. High concentrations of hydrogen up to 20.3 ppmv and 17.3 ppmv occur in Jasper Ridge and Portola Valley, respectively, ∼30–35 times greater than the atmospheric concentration. Most samples with high hydrogen concentrations fall on or near faults, suggesting an origin by serpentinization or geomechanical activation of catalytic sites in minerals, although a deep-seated primordial origin cannot be excluded. Elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide resulted from aerobic microbial degradation of organic matter and elevated concentrations of light hydrocarbons likely resulted from thermal cracking of organic matter. • High concentrations of hydrogen discovered to occur in Jasper Ridge and Portola Valley near faults. • Hierarchical cluster and principal component analyses reveal spatial clustering of gas samples. • Alternating least squares regression reveals pure components and sources of gases. • Geochemical soil sampling and data analysis is a tool for natural H 2 exploration. • D. vulgaris induced ferrihydrite transformation via the direct reduction and S2−-driven processes. • The presence of SO 4 2− altered the mineralogical transformation of ferrihydrite. • The formation of magnetite and mackinawite enhanced the stability of As in solids. • High SO 4 2− loadings (SO 4 2−/Fe = 1.5) resulted in the substantial mobilization of As into the solution. Sulfate-reducing bacteria play an important role in the geochemistry of iron (oxyhydr)oxide and arsenic (As) in natural environments; however, the associated reaction processes are yet to be fully understood. In this study, batch experiments coupled with geochemical, spectroscopic, microscopic, and thermodynamic analyses were conducted to investigate the dynamic coupling of ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As desorption/redistribution mediated by Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris). The results indicated that D. vulgaris could induce ferrihydrite transformation via S2−-driven and direct reduction processes. In the absence of SO 4 2−, D. vulgaris directly reduced ferrihydrite, and As desorption and re-sorption occurred simultaneously during the partial transformation of ferrihydrite to magnetite. The increase in SO 4 2− loading promoted the S2−-driven reduction of ferrihydrite and accelerated the subsequent mineralogical transformation. In the low and medium SO 4 2− treatments, ferrihydrite was completely transformed to a mixture of magnetite and mackinawite, which increased the fraction of As in the residual phase and stabilized As. In the high SO 4 2− treatment, although the replacement of ferrihydrite by only mackinawite also increased the fraction of As in the residual phase, 22.1% of the total As was released into the solution due to the poor adsorption affinity of As to mackinawite and the conversion of As5+ to As3+. The mechanisms of ferrihydrite reduction, mineralogy transformation, and As mobilization and redistribution mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria are closely related to the surrounding SO 4 2− loadings. These results advance our understanding of the biogeochemical behavior of Fe, S, and As, and are helpful for the risk assessment and remediation of As contamination. A series of previously unpublished human remains were found at Cueva de la Cocina (Dos Aguas, Valencia, Spain) in excavations from the 1940s and 1970s. Our analyses indicate a minimum of 5 individuals were present in the archaeological deposit, including both adults and children. AMS radiocarbon dating and osteological analysis document ritual defleshing or skinning during the Late Mesolithic, while δ13C and δ15N stable isotope analysis and comparisons to contemporary Mesolithic human remains from the region suggest that these individuals were part of a broader subsistence and cultural network of Holocene hunter-gatherers. Ancient DNA data indicate these late Mesolithic individuals were descendants of a major spread of a new population after a population turnover at the end of the Late Glacial. Hydrothermal Iron-oxide-Cu-Au (IOCG) deposits are important exploration targets for a number of metals of economic importance. Voluminous sodium metasomatism is ubiquitous in most IOCG provinces. The origin of the metasomatic fluid responsible for the formation of albite-rich rocks in such terranes is contentious; both evaporite-derived fluid and magmatic fluid have been advocated. The Singhbhum IOCG province in India is known for hosting several polymetallic deposits from which U, Cu, and apatite-magnetite are mined as principal commodities together with Ni, Au, Ag, Se, Te, Mo, and low-Ti magnetite as by-products. Voluminous albite-rich rocks occur at several sites along the mineralized belt. Metasomatic albite schist comprising predominantly albite and quartz at Pathargora contains tourmaline intricately associated with albite. Based on textures and mineralogical associations, tourmaline is classified as: tur 1 : coarse nodular tourmaline ± albite ± magnetite aggregate; tur 2 : disseminated fine-grained tourmaline in a schistose matrix; and tur 3 : tourmaline + biotite + magnetite + apatite clots. All tourmaline belongs to the alkali group and most to the dravite sub-group. Very low concentrations of Li (avg 3.8 ppm), Zn (avg 6 ppm) and Mn (avg 21 ppm) but high V (avg 2130 ppm) and Ni (avg 306.5 ppm) in tur 1 core (tur 1c) co-genetic with albite contrast with what is reported in magmatic/magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline of granitic affinity. The δ11B values of tourmaline are mostly positive, ranging between –4.0 and 9.2 ‰ (avg 4.0 ± 3.0; n = 79); values of tur 1 cores are 4.9–9.2 ‰. Previous fluid inclusion studies described the presence of halite and barite daughter crystals in primary fluid inclusions and demonstrated the involvement of a high-temperature (≥450 °C) and high-salinity (≥50 wt% NaCl equivalent) brine in the formation of cores of tur 1. Calculated δ11B values of the hydrothermal fluid in equilibrium with tur 1c range from 7.3 to 11.5 ‰ (for a crystallization temperature of 450 °C). Based on the textural setting of the tur 1c -albite assemblage, geochemical and boron isotope composition of tur 1c , and evidence of a high saline brine, we propose that the albite schist is the product of Na-metasomatism by brines that derived major constituents from the dissolution of marine evaporite. The inferred paleo-latitude and geological environment of sedimentation related to the host lithologies are consistent with the evaporitic model. We further suggest that a similar mechanism might have played an important role in the formation of albite-rich rocks in other IOCG provinces where the involvement of evaporite-derived fluids in mineralization/alteration have been demonstrated. Similar major element, trace element and positive boron isotope (1.5–6.3 ‰) composition of tur 3 suggest similar source of fluid as that of tur 1c , and tur 3 formed either during the same alteration event or during a separate fluid pulse. On the other hand, the mode of occurrence, very low trace element concentration and weakly negative to positive δ11B (−4 to 2.3 ‰) value of tur 2 suggest their metamorphic origin. Vanadium (V) is a redox-sensitive trace metal that typically exists in one of three oxidation states (+3, +4 and +5) in natural waters; a feature increasingly used in paleoredox studies of ancient marine sediments. However, our knowledge of V geochemistry in low-oxygen marine environments is still limited, especially regarding interactions of V with reduced iron minerals such as green rust. Carbonate green rusts (GR CO3) are mixed FeII/FeIII-phases found in some modern ferruginous settings, such as Lake Matano (Indonesia), and were likely abundant in ancient ferruginous marine systems where they may have played an essential role in authigenic V enrichments in sediments. Here, we present an abiotic pathway of V removal from seawater via reduction and adsorption onto amorphous GR CO3. Suspensions of the freshly precipitated GR CO3 (1 g L−1) were added to vanadate (1 mg VV L−1 initial concentration) in anoxic synthetic seawater solutions. Vanadium removal by GR CO3 was rapid and efficient, with 92 – 99% of V removed in under 20 seconds. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy showed that VV adsorbed by GR CO3 was partially reduced to a mixture of VV and VIV, with the average oxidation state of adsorbed V increasing (+4.3 to +4.7) with increasing solution pH (7.5 to 8.5). Upon subsequent exposure to aerated seawater, V-bearing GR CO3 oxidized to lepidocrocite [γ–FeO(OH)] within 24 h, with concomitant reduction of all solid-phase VV to VIV. During oxidation, V was not released back into solution; rather, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) modeling revealed that VIV was structurally incorporated into lepidocrocite as octahedral vanadyl (VO2+). Our work further constrains the aqueous geochemistry of V, which has implications for understanding V cycling and removal mechanisms in both modern and ancient marine systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Earth's crust, Ni is generally concentrated in mafic and ultramafic rocks and is coupled with Mg in Mg-olivine, Mg-pyroxene and spinel. Whether the Ni-rich, and in general, the mafic component of Australasian tektites and microtektites is terrestrial or meteoritic is still debated. To test the origin of the Ni-rich component, we studied the Ni versus Mg distribution in a large geochemical database of Australasian tektites (n = 208) and microtektites (n = 238) from the literature. Nickel contents of up to 428 µg/g in tektites and 678 µg/g in microtektites covary with Mg in tektites and in most (∼85%) of the microtektites defining a mixing trend between crustal and chondritic values, thereby documenting the chondritic origin of the Ni-rich component in Australasian tektites/microtektites. Mixing calculations indicate up to 4% and up to 6% by weight chondritic component in tektites and microtektites, respectively. A possible mafic component of terrestrial origin is observed in a minority of tektite and microtektite specimens. This finding is consistent with previous works suggesting a possible occurrence of a chondritic signature in high-Ni tektites, based on the study of highly siderophile elements and Os isotopes, and high-Ni microtektites, based on Ni, Co, and Cr ratios. The combined geochemical and isotopic analyses of high-Ni tektites and microtektites in collections worldwide may thus reveal the chondritic impactor type that generated one of the presumably largest impacts in the Cenozoic. We have analyzed concentrations of Mo, Re and U in the suspended particles, water column, underlying carbonate-dominated sediments and pore waters of two contrasting marine lakes situated on the Adriatic Coast of Croatia. Our data are the first for Re in these lakes. Rogoznica Lake is mainly euxinic, but subject to occasional oxygenation events, whereas Mljet Island's Malo Jezero is currently oxic year around but historically was seasonally euxinic. These characteristics make the lakes useful testing grounds for redox proxies. We devote particular attention to Re/Mo ratios, which have great promise as redox proxies. In marine sediments, the range of log[Re auth /Mo auth ] exceeds 2, and typical analytical uncertainty is ±0.05, providing resolving power similar to δ98Mo. Authigenic [Re s /Mo s ] ratios in sediments depend on varying supplies of three components: FeMo,Re)S 4 coprecipitates, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides (plus Mn(III,IV) oxyhydroxides in some cases) and a still-uncharacterized Re-rich, Mo-poor component possibly of biological origin. Removal of the latter component explains a 50% depletion of Re aq without Mo aq from Rogoznica's oxic waters. Water column concentrations of Mo aq and Re aq , as well as [Re s /Mo s ] ratios in Rogoznica's suspended particles are predicted successfully by a model that attributes these elements' removal from sulfidic seawater solely to coprecipitation in Fe(Mo,Re)S 4 , assuming a partition coefficient of 0.6. However, to predict sediment compositions, additional authigenic Mo supplied by mainly Fe(III) oxyhydroxides during sporadic oxygenation events must be considered. In Malo Jezero, sulfide concentrations are too low even in pore waters for precipitation of Fe(Mo,Re)S 4. Consistent with earlier work, U aq profiles are best explained by eddy diffusive transport to the sediment rather than capture by a precipitate in the water column. In Rogoznica pore waters, Mo aq extracted through 0.45 μm pore size filters exceeds by 50-fold concentrations predicted by the model and measured previously with 0.15 μm filters. Here we present a seismic reflection profile and geochronological, paleontological, and geochemical data from 600 m of borehole cores (2022–1394 m depth) from the Songliao Basin to constrain the timing, provenance, and tectonic background of the Linxi Formation. Detrital zircons from the Linxi Formation yield a maximum depositional age of 257.4 ± 4.1 Ma. The formation was intruded by a syenite porphyry dike that crystallized at 245.6 ± 2.7 Ma. Furthermore, the paleontological assemblage indicates an upper Permian stratigraphic age. Borehole samples yield fingerprints of major oxides that are similar to clastic rocks in continental arc basins. Their Rb contents are relatively high (92 ppm on average), Rb/Sr (0.02–2.86) and Th/U (1.12–6.30) ratios are low, and (La/Yb) N and Eu/Eu* ratios are 3.85–8.13 and 0.54–0.98, respectively. These geochemical characteristics indicate a source of continental magma arc. Aided by discrimination diagrams, we propose that the Linxi Formation was deposited within a continental arc or on a continental margin during the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. The Linxi Formation was deposited in a water body that experienced a gradual reduction in salinity, transitioning from a marine environment at the bottom to a transitional marine-terrestrial environment at the top. The water body also became gradually shallower and deposited sediment in the tectonic setting of continental arc. A significant portion of the continental crust is composed of plutonic igneous rocks. However, little is known about the geochemical behaviour of N between the different minerals during magmatic differentiation. To provide new constraints for the behaviour of N during crust formation, we have characterised the geochemistry of nitrogen (N) in the compositionally zoned calc-alkaline pluton at Loch Doon, SW Scotland. We present N concentration and N isotope values for whole-rock data alongside biotite, plagioclase and K-feldspar mineral separates and assess the degree to which these data preserve equilibrium partitioning during magmatic differentiation. We show that whole rock likely inherited its N contents and δ15N signatures from the initial source composition and that this signature is homogenous at a pluton scale. Whilst the whole-rock data are best explained as crust-derived N in the source, the degree of homogenisation across a pluton scale is inconsistent with empirical N diffusivities, ruling out syn-emplacement crustal assimilation as the source of N. Instead, our data suggest a crustal signature inherited from depth associated with the Iapetus subduction zone. At a mineral scale, we find that N preferentially partitions into the feldspars over mica in this system in the order K-feldspar > plagioclase ≈ biotite > quartz, with average mineral–mineral distribution coefficients of D N plagioclase-biotite = 1.3 ± 0.6 and D N Kspar-biotite = 2.8 ± 0.6. Partitioning is accompanied by a large and near constant equilibrium isotope fractionation factor between biotite and both feldspars (averages are Δ15N Plag-Biotite = +7.8 ± 1.2‰ and Δ15N Kspar-Biotite = +7.9 ± 1.0‰). In contrast, Δ15N Kspar-Plagioclase closely approximates 0‰, where both minerals show δ15N values overlapping with the bulk rock δ15N values. These results show that mica crystallisation generates a 15N-depleted reservoir within plutonic rocks. Moreover, our dataset suggests that feldspars might be a more significant host of N in the igneous portion of Earth's continental and oceanic crust than previously thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • The Paleo-Tethys Ocean developed Permian–Triassic ocean islands and submarine fans. • The protoliths of E-MORB-like metabasites have zircon U–Pb ages of ca. 272–241 Ma. • Quartzose schists and South Qiangtang flysch show consistent detrital provenances. Unraveling the protolith origin of high-pressure and low-temperature (HP-LT) metamorphic rocks is the key to understanding the tectonic evolution of active continental margins. A comprehensive study, including field observations, geochemical analyses and zircon U-Pb geochronological dating, was conducted on the Lanling HP-LT terrane to determine its protolith origin and the presubduction paleogeography of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The metabasites can be divided into two geochemical groups: Group A samples exhibit low TiO 2 values (1.15–1.81 wt%) and subalkaline basalt affinity with rare earth element (REE) distribution patterns and trace element abundances similar to enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts (E-MORB); Group B samples have higher TiO 2 values (2.75–3.32 wt%) and show alkaline basalt affinity and ocean island basalt (OIB) geochemical signatures. Lanling metabasites are likely derived from a long-depleted mantle source combined with crustal contamination based on the following evidence: (1) positive ε Nd (t) values (+4.8 to +5.6) and a scattered distribution of I sr (t) values (0.704684 to 0.710999), (2) abundant Precambrian zircon grains, and (3) a volcanic arc trend in the tectonic discrimination diagram. Zircon U–Pb dating yields a timing of ca. 272–241 Ma for the protolith age of the Lanling eclogites. The protoliths of the OIB- and E-MORB-type metabasites in Lanling are postulated to be ocean island magmatites and basaltic crust of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, respectively. Moreover, the Lanling quartzose schists contain only ancient detrital zircons with ages of >500 Ma and show protolith lithostratigraphy and provenance similar to those of the late Paleozoic clastic flysch in the South Qiangtang block (SQB). Based on the above observations and other geological evidence, a hypothetical model of the Permian–Triassic ocean island and adjacent abyssal submarine fan in the Paleo-Tethys Ocean is proposed to explain the protolith origin of the Lanling HP-LT terrane and the presubduction paleogeography in central Qiangtang. Clasts of feldspathic lithologies such as magnesian anorthosites, anorthositic troctolites, and granulites in lunar meteorites have greatly expanded knowledge of the lithologic diversity of the lunar crust. However, their origins and relationships to other major crustal lithologies such as the ferroan anorthosites, magnesian-suite, and alkali-suite are not fully understood. Here we present the results of phase equilibrium modeling using the MELTS and MAGFOX programs designed to investigate the origins of lunar crustal lithologies and petrologic connections between them. We show that the major and trace element compositions of the Mg- and alkali-suites are consistent with partial melting of hybridized sources and are inconsistent with decompression melting + assimilation models. Our results also show that the vertical trend in Mg# in mafic silicates vs. An# in plagioclase characteristic of feldspathic meteoritic lithologies and ferroan anorthosites can be produced by fractional crystallization of KREEP-free Mg-suite melts, but that these melts are not likely to contribute significantly to the composition of the global crust. Furthermore, we calculated potential parental melt compositions for these crustal lithologies using the abundances of REEs in plagioclase in FANs, the Mg- and alkali-suites, and clasts in feldspathic meteorites. Our results show that despite low bulk rock abundances of incompatible trace elements in many feldspathic lunar meteorites, parental melts with overall REE abundances similar to or in excess of KREEP are needed to reproduce the REE abundances in plagioclase in clasts from feldspathic lunar meteorites. However, the lack of a Na enrichment trend in their plagioclase compositions with decreasing Mg# requires very Na-depleted melts without a KREEP component. The available data regarding magnesian anorthosites, anorthositic troctolites, and granulites in lunar meteorites, and inferences made here regarding their parental melt compositions, lead to contradictory and ambiguous conclusions regarding their origins. Understanding siderophile element partitioning between metal and silicate melts under diverse conditions can be used to place important constraints on the materials and conditions of planetary accretion and core formation, as well as post core formation processes. However, the effects of Si on the partitioning and activity coefficients for these elements are not well known, despite Si likely being one of the dominant light elements in Earth's core. To address this gap in understanding, we have undertaken a systematic study of the highly siderophile elements Re, Pt, Os, and Ru, and the refractory lithophile elements Nb, Ta and Ti at 1600 °C and 1 GPa, to derive epsilon interaction parameters for these elements in FeSi metallic liquids. Positive epsilon interaction parameters were measured for Nb, Ta, Ti, Ru, Re, Pt, and Os, indicating that dissolved Si in Fe liquids causes a decrease in their metal/silicate partition coefficients (or 'silicophobic' behavior). Furthermore, ε Re , O s , o r R u Si > ε Re , O s , o r R u S which means Si causes a larger decrease in D(metal/silicate) than S, and the chalcophile behavior expected from some elements will be completely masked by the presence of Si in a metallic liquid. The new parameters are used to update an activity model that now includes 36 siderophile elements in Fe-Ni-Si-S-C liquids (27 trace elements considered here). Systematic assessment of these 27 elements shows which have the strongest affinity for Si, C, and S, and also how activity coefficients for these elements would vary during accretion and core formation in Earth, Mars, and Mercury of widely differing fO 2 and core compositional conditions. The activity model is combined with new partitioning expressions for Mo, W, Cr, Re Ru, Pt, and Os and applied to aspects of post core formation mantle geochemistry of Earth, Mars, and Mercury. Our updated expressions show that the BSE Mo/W ratio can easily be achieved with metal/silicate partitioning during growth of the Earth, whereas Re, Os and Ru become lower than and highly fractionated compared with BSE values during core formation and accretion, and thus nearly 99% of their BSE abundances are likely contributed by late accretion. Ru isotopes should be a very good indicator of the source material for the late accretion. The high Pt/Os and Re/Os developed in a deepening magma ocean during the growth of the Earth, indicates 186Os and 187Os isotopes could be coupled if this ancient material remained isolated and subsequently became entrained in mantle plumes and measured in surficial lavas. The extent to which this occurred will be limited by the low Os content of this ancient material, thus requiring mixing as a major component in plume sources. Martian mantle Hf/W ratio stays low during accretion and core formation modelling, suggesting that W isotope anomalies are more likely due to solid/liquid silicate fractionation than to core formation. Finally, Ti contents measured by MESSENGER at Mercury's surface can be explained by segregation of either a metallic core (IW-6 to -8) or metallic core + sulfide (IW-4 to -7.5) followed by mantle melting. The Bétaré-Oya Gold District is one of the three gold districts in East Cameroon with varied types of mining. The study site is an open-cast mine located in an alluvial plain. The strata succession globally consists of two positive sequences represented by three facies associations and seven lithofacies: massive clast-supported (Gcm), massive trough-cross bedded (Gtm), and massive matrix-supported (Gmm) conglomerates; massive sands (Sm); and massive (Fm), heterolothic (Fhl), and convolute and heterolithic (Fhlc) clays. The facies analysis indicates deposition after a recent tectonic event creating a depression, followed by a rapid deposition of varied facies and energies of sedimentation with fluvial and gravity inputs. The deposits come from proximal to distal sources but more proximal. The identified heavy mineral or accompanying minerals reveal a plutonic source (tourmaline sometimes folded), a volcanic source (olivine or clino-pyroxene with cracks), and a metamorphic source (sillimanite, andalusite, and staurolite). In the pan concentrates of placer with high silver (Ag) concentration (100 ppm) are also associated with relative abundance of lead (Pb) (17.8 ppm), zinc (Zn) (27 ppm), and low levels of copper (Cu) (3.1 ppm). The concentration and distribution of some element ratios, such as thorium/scandium (Th/Sc), chromium/thorium (Cr/Th), and europium anomaly (Eu/Eu∗), rare earth elements (REEs) and aluminum oxide/titanium dioxide (Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2) vs. silicon dioxide (SiO 2) plots for the studied sediment indicate heterogeneous sources of rocks with dominance of felsic sources. The discriminant diagram reveals a recycled or sedimentary provenance of the deposited sediments. The tectonic setting plot indicates a collision tectonic setting which is consistent with the Precambrian history of the study area which belongs to the Pan-African North-Equatorial fold Belt. The gold deposits in the Bétaré-Oya area probably derive from several sources, such as a vein source (from magmatic and metamorphic processes of the Neoproterozoic age) and a sedimentary source (from remobilization of ante-Neoproterozoic rocks of Archean and Paleoproterozoic age), deposited during the Cenozoic period linked to the reactivation of the Precambrian Sanaga fault. These are likely associated with a supergene source as indicated by the presence of dissolution microstructures. The cases of detrital gold deposits from several sources has been reported for the Serpont gold deposits in South-East Belgium, and those associated with authigenic forms are known in Poland, New Zealand, and Tanzania. • A droplet-freezing apparatus was developed to investigate ice nucleation activities of atmospheric particles. • Heterogeneous uptake of NO 2 led to significant decrease in ice nucleation activities of feldspar and ATD. • The impacts of NO 2 uptake on ice nucleation activities were more significant for feldspar than ATD. Mineral dust is an important type of ice nucleating particles in the troposphere; however, the effects of heterogeneous reactions on ice nucleation (IN) activities of mineral dust remain to be elucidated. A droplet-freezing apparatus (Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry Ice Nucleation Apparatus, GIGINA) was developed in this work to measure IN activities of atmospheric particles in the immersion freezing mode, and its performance was validated by a series of experimental characterizations. This apparatus was then employed to measure IN activities of feldspar and Arizona Test Dust (ATD) particles before and after heterogeneous reaction with NO 2 (10±0.5 ppmv) at 40% relative humidity. The surface coverage of nitrate, θ (NO 3 −), increased to 3.1±0.2 for feldspar after reaction with NO 2 for 6 hr, and meanwhile the active site density per unit surface area (n s) at -20°C was reduced from 92±5 to <1.0 cm−2 by about two orders of magnitude; however, no changes in nitrate content or IN activities were observed for further increase in reaction time (up to 24 hr). Both nitrate content and IN activities changed continuously with reaction time (up to 24 hr) for ATD particles; after reaction with NO 2 for 24 hr, θ (NO 3 −) increased to 1.4±0.1 and n s at -20°C was reduced from 20±4 to 9.7±1.9 cm−2 by a factor of ∼2. Our work suggests that heterogeneous reaction with NO 2 , an abundant reactive nitrogen species in the troposphere, may significantly reduce IN activities of mineral dust in the immersion freezing mode. Ca isotope geochemistry has great potential for improving our understanding of magmatic systems and for tracing the deep Earth carbon cycle. There are still many open questions, however, regarding the proper application of this relatively novel proxy to the study of mantle-derived magmas, including (i) the possible effects of pressure on mineral-melt Ca isotope fractionation factors, and (ii) the potential for Ca isotopes to be used as tracers of recycled marine carbonates in mantle-derived magmas. Kimberlites are mantle-derived melts that are highly enriched in CO 2 and are the deepest-sourced magmas (>200 km depth) known to erupt at Earth's surface, providing an excellent opportunity to explore these questions. We present Ca isotope data combined with detailed petrographic observations, bulk-carbonate C-O isotope data, and bulk-rock major element analyses, for a suite of 23 well-characterized kimberlite samples from their type-locality (Kimberley, South Africa). These kimberlites have abundant previous evidence for recycled surface materials in their mantle source, including low S isotope and moderately radiogenic Sr isotope compositions, yet display only limited variations in their Ca isotope compositions (δ44Ca BSE of −0.08‰ to −0.27‰), with an average of −0.17 ± 0.02‰ (2SE, n = 21). This composition is indistinguishable from average carbonatites [−0.19 ± 0.03‰ (2SE, n = 106)] and OIB from recent studies [−0.16 ± 0.01‰ (2SE, n = 41)], and slightly lower than average MORB [−0.11 ± 0.02‰ (2SE, n = 31)]. Although our samples display a wide range of emplacement styles, alteration conditions, extents of magmatic differentiation, and degrees of mantle-cargo entrainment (i.e., xenocryst accumulation), we find no correlations between Ca isotopes and any of these factors. Instead, we find that low-degree partial melting of the likely kimberlite source lithology (i.e., carbon-bearing garnet lherzolite) yields modelled melt δ44Ca BSE values ranging between −0.12‰ and −0.16‰ (at 1400–1500 °C), in agreement with the measured Ca isotope compositions of the Kimberley kimberlites. This observation, and the lack of heavy carbon isotope signatures in the examined samples, indicates that kimberlites do not require subducted carbonates in their mantle sources, despite their very high CO 2 contents. Although several recent studies have suggested that equilibrium mineral-melt Ca isotope fractionation factors (e.g., 1000lnα grt-melt) could be significantly different at higher pressures (i.e., due to pressure-induced changes in Ca O bond lengths and coordinations), our models successfully reproduce the kimberlite data using pressure-independent predictions for mineral-melt fractionations. It remains possible, however, that differences in isotopic fractionation due to the peculiar composition of kimberlite melts (e.g., high CO 2 , low SiO 2) are effectively cancelled out by competing pressure effects, and future work independently targeting these factors will be especially important for our understanding of Ca isotope fractionation in mantle-derived melts and the Ca isotope systematics of Earth's mantle. The Late Triassic volcanic–sedimentary successions deposited in the Qiangtang Basin are linked with the initiation of the Mesozoic Qiangtang Basin. However, the nature of this basin is hotly debated. Here, we synthesize petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, and detrital zircon U–Pb age data of these volcanic–sedimentary successions to constrain their chemical weathering history, provenance, and tectonic setting and to reconstruct the tectonic evolution of the Mesozoic Qiangtang Basin. The chemical weathering indices, especially the chemical index of alteration (CIA), are controlled by grain size and hydraulic sorting rather than sediment recycling. Low compositional and textural maturities, high index of compositional variation (ICV) values, and low CIA and plagioclase index of alteration (PIA) values in most samples suggest that the sediments from the Fanghu and north Woruoshan sections are predominantly from low-maturity sources that may have experienced a weak chemical weathering history. Based on provenance-sensitive geochemical indices (La/Th versus Hf, La/Sc versus Co/Th, and Sc/Th versus Cr/Th) and petrographic features, the detrital contributions to the Nadi Kangri Formation siliciclastic rocks are predominantly proximal felsic rocks. Detrital zircon age spectra suggest that the Nadi Kangri Formation siliciclastic rocks exhibit a provenance change from the Fanghu to the well QK-1 area, although all of the rocks were derived from the Qiangtang terrane itself. The Fanghu section was primarily sourced from synchronous magmatic rocks and pre-Triassic strata from the North Qiangtang and Central uplift belt, while well QK-1 was primarily sourced from recycled sediments from the South Qiangtang and Central uplift belt. Therefore, we propose that the Nadi Kangri Formation volcanic–sedimentary successions were deposited in a rift basin and that its evolution was likely related to the interaction of the rapid expansion of the Meso-Tethys Oceanic crust, collapse of the collisional orogen, and rollback of the Jinsha Paleo-Tethys subducting slab during the Late Triassic. The Pulmoddai placer sands in Sri Lanka (9°3′23.65″–8°51′38.83″N and 80°55′22.91″–81°3′32.65″E) is considered to be one of the major rare earth element (REE) prospects world-wide. This deposit has a global significance in terms of strategic economic resources and can provide valuable insight for resource estimation and for its economic use. A detailed study of the geochemical, mineralogical, and textural properties of the heavy minerals of this region is undertaken applying the scanning electron microscopy–electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP–OES), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques. The results from these analyses are modeled to delineate the source(s) which contribute to the formation of the mineral deposits and their subsequent enrichment. The beach sediment from this region, exhibited elevated concentrations of major elements like silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn) and high abundance of minor and trace elements like yttrium (Y), strontium (Sr), lanthanum (La), barium (Ba), which indicates that the provenance is similar to calcium-silicate rocks. The highest (total) concentration of Y, La, scandium (Sc) and cerium (Ce) are mainly associated to fine grained sediment, signifying that their occurrences are governed by the grain size distribution and ambient hydrodynamic conditions primarily from lagoonal input. Monazite, zircon, ilmenite, rutile, and xenotime are more abundant than garnet in the study area, as is evident from the higher abundance of thorium (Th) and uranium (U) and the enrichment of zirconium (Zr), Ce, vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), and Y. Textural analysis of sediment shows sediment particles are poorly sorted and have more angular grain boundaries, indicating their lower textural maturity. This suggests that the sediment is fluvially derived from a close source rock of charnockite specific to the hinterland lithology. The sediment transported by perennial rivers and the hydrodynamic conditions of the Kokkilai Lagoon estuary, are the two primary sources of heavy mineral enrichment in the study area, which is quite unique in terms of the placer formation. The North Qaidam (NQ) has records Paleozoic–Mesozoic magmatism and metamorphism preseving evidence for the tectonic evolution of this orogen, However, the precise timing and mechanism of subduction, and the collisional and post-collision history of the NQ and neighboring orogens during the Paleozoic–Mesozoic are not well understood. We conducted an integrated investigation involving detailed field observations, petrology, zircon U–Pb geochronology, Lu–Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemical data from volcanic rocks from the Maoniushan Formation and intermediate-acid intrusive rocks in the Dadakenwulashan, Habuqige, and Kongquegou areas of NW China to determine their ages and petrogenesis. We also employed a compilation of recently published high-quality data in our assessment, and provide a better understanding of the regional tectonic evolution. Devonian volcanic rock and Triassic intrusive rock samples yielded zircon U–Pb ages of 407 Ma, 378 Ma, 377 Ma, 241 Ma, 232 Ma, and 230 Ma. Using the existing regional data and spatiotemporal distribution of magmatism, possible models to explain the tectonic evolution of the NQ from the Paleozoic to the Mesozoic, which records two Wilson cycles within a branch of the Tethyan orogenic system, were proposed. (1) The transition from compressional to extensional tectonic regimes may have occurred at ∼ 410 Ma in the NQ. (2) Twice rapid crust uplift and erosion formation of the Maoniushan Formation molasse with a volcanic interlayer have been recognized, which is a response to the tectonic regime of slab break-off (410 Ma–390 Ma) and lithosphere delamination (380 Ma–360 Ma), respectively. The direct determination of silicate melts iron and silicon isotopes signature remains a major challenge of high-temperature isotope geochemistry. For this reason, melts are often approximated by silicate glasses. Calculation of precise equilibrium Si and Fe isotopes fractionation factors between minerals and melt would indeed allow us to distinguish equilibrium fractionation from diffusion-driven kinetic fractionation involved in the iron and silicon isotopes signatures of Earth and other planets. In this study, we use for the first time, first-principles molecular dynamics based on density functional theory to determine iron and silicon isotope compositions of different silicate melts, namely: iron-rich basalt, iron-depleted basalt, basanite, trachyte and phonolite. The 57Fe/54Fe reduced partition function ratios (β-factors) of the different melts span over a 1.1 ‰ range at 1000 Kelvin (K) while 30Si/28Si β-factors are much less influenced by the melt composition with a 0.5 ‰ fractionation range at the same temperature. The main parameter controlling iron isotope fractionation in silicate melts having similar iron oxidation state is, after temperature, the average Fe-O bond length. The chemical environment around iron (e.g. Fe-Fe distances) is suggested to contribute to Fe isotope fractionation as well. Silicon isotopes fractionation seems also affected, but to a lesser extent, by its local chemical composition with decreasing Si-Fe distances leading to slightly higher Si β-factor in the melt. From these melts Fe and Si β-factors, a new set of equilibrium fractionation factors between a variety of minerals and melts has been calculated. These new Δ57Fe min-melt and Δ30Si min-melt sets allow us to discuss whether processes such as fractional crystallization, partial melting and diffusion could be responsible for the documented Fe and Si isotopes variations in igneous rocks. Our results suggest that: 1) fractional crystallization may explain at least part of the Fe and Si isotopic evolution during magmatic differentiation, for values up to δ57Fe = 0.65 ‰ and δ30Si = -0.1 ‰, respectively, 2) partial melting of the upper mantle can produce the Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts (MORB) iron isotopes signature. Finally, we calculated that olivine at equilibrium with a basaltic melt could display an iron isotope composition down to −0.1 ‰ for δ57Fe. Understanding subduction processes is critical in assessing the long-term evolution of the upper mantle and continental crust. We present new geochemical data on glassy submarine lavas from the Bransfield Strait, the Phoenix and West Scotia ridges, and previously unpublished data of marine sediments from atop the Phoenix Plate. We combined new and published geochemical data from across the northern sector of the Antarctic Peninsula to unravel both large-scale mantle composition and flow across the region. The geochemistry of Phoenix and West Scotia Ridge basalts supports the hypothesis that both ridges are underlain by Pacific MORB mantle, brought into the region through the eastward expansion of the Scotia Plate. Comparisons among lavas from the Phoenix/West Scotia ridges, the South Shetland Islands volcanic arc, and the Bransfield Strait/Prince Gustav Rift back-arc region reveal that the Pacific upper mantle flowed into the mantle wedge and was subsequently modified by subduction processes. The compositions of Bransfield Strait lavas range from strongly subduction-influenced near the strait's center to akin to Phoenix Ridge MORB toward the strait's edges. This suggests that the Phoenix MORB mantle has flowed around the slab edges into the mantle wedge, diluting the subduction signal and focusing the subduction-modified mantle towards the center of the strait. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that mixing of Phoenix MORB mantle with 0 to 3 % subduction component having a fluid/sediment ratio of ∼1 can explain the compositional range in the Bransfield Strait. Furthermore, our modeling suggests the presence of a more depleted Phoenix MORB mantle beneath the South Shetland Islands modified by the addition of ∼3 % subduction component with a fluid/sediment ratio ranging from ∼0.18 to 4. The increase in fluid/sediment ratios in the South Shetland Island lavas corresponds to a spatiotemporal progression of volcanism from the southwest (40–140 Ma) to the northeast (30–60 Ma). Finally, we have identified a set of lavas with unique trace element and isotope compositions typical of alkaline volcanism found across other parts of the Antarctic Peninsula. Surprisingly, we find occurrences of these lavas on both sides of the South Shetland Trench, suggesting the presence of a distinct enriched source in the upper mantle throughout the region. This study presents the results of lithological, diatom, geochemical analyses and radiocarbon chronology of the bottom lake sediments and peat bogs in the central part of the Onega Peninsula (the southern coast of the White Sea): Lake Maloye Murakanskoye (11.0 m a.s.l.), Lake Zhirovskoye (9.5 m a.s.l.), Lake Murakanskoye (7 m a.s.l.), and the Gorbovatiy Mokh bog (6.5 m a.s.l.). The bottom topography and sediments of Lake Murakanskoye were examined using sonar and ground penetration radar (GPR) survey, whereas in the other locations only the water depth was measured. Then, the digital models of the lake bottom topography were created. As an additional indicator of the relative sea-level (RSL) position, we used data on the altitude of the coastal terraces. Evidences of two transgressions in the White Sea (late glacial and Middle Holocene) are revealed. The transgressions were interrupted by two regressions (Early and Late Holocene). Our studies do not allow us to make a clear conclusion about the time and maximum level of the late glacial transgression. However, we may suggest that its level was above 11 m a.s.l. The regression of the Early Holocene started before 10.6–10.2 ka cal BP when the water level in the study area dropped below the altitude of 11m. At 9.4–9.1 ka cal BP the RSL was at an altitude of ca 7m. The Middle Holocene transgression (Tapes) started after 8.4 ka cal BP. The maximum level was reached before 7.4 ka cal BP and did not exceed an altitude of 9.5 m. The RSL stabilized at an altitude about 8.5–8 m during 7.4–6.0 ka cal BP. During 6.0–3.9 ka cal BP RSL very slowly decreased or fluctuated by the level of 8–7 m. RSL began to fall from the 7 m altitude about 4.0–3.9 ka cal BP and by 2.7–2.3 ka cal BP the sea-level reached 4.5 m. After that RSL dropped to its modern position. The article presents the results of geochemical studies of Lake Onego. The chemical composition of the water was investigated, the uneven distribution of elements (Fe, Mn, Al, Cu, Zn, and Cr) and the forms of their migration along the lake water area were revealed. It is shown that the suspended form of metals prevails in bays exposed to an anthropogenic load. The study of the chemical composition of sediment from sedimentation traps showed its difference from the composition of suspended matter and bottom sediments. The mineralogical composition of suspended matter and sediment from sedimentation traps has been studied. Their comparison with the bottom sediments of the lake is carried out. The Wietrzychowice Cultural Park protects one of the last preserved megalithic barrows constructed by the Funnel Beaker Culture societies at the Kuyavia Lakeland (Central Poland). The nearby archaeological site at Śmieły located on the shore of Karaśnia Lake provided numerous Mesolithic and Neolithic remains such as flint artefacts, potsherds, arrowheads, and mammal bones with traces of human processing. The lake and peat sediments at the Śmieły site provided a unique opportunity to investigate man-environment relationships during the transition period from Mesolithic to Neolithic. The age-depth model for the deposits was based on five radiocarbon dates as well as archaeological artefacts. The multi-proxy study, including geochemistry, pollen, plant macrofossils, Mollusca, Cladocera and Chironomidae analyses, were conducted to recognize palaeoenvironmental changes between 7500 and 3500 BCE. Combining environmental and archaeological data, we attempt to distinguish between natural phenomena triggered by climate factors with those induced by human activity. The data indicated hydrological changes associated with natural factors: (1) the phase of aquatic ecosystem since 7500 to 5800 BCE, (2) the phase of water shallowing between 5800 and 4600 BCE, and (3) the development of alder fen in the lake shore zone since ca. 4600 BCE. Vegetation changes suggest early landscape transformations in Central Poland already due to the activity of Mesolithic societies. Fossil pollen and plant macroremains data combined with detailed map of modern soil distribution in the area allowed to identify pattern of vegetation distribution around the Mesolithic campsite. Neolithic discontinuity of habitation process between ca. 4600 and 4000 BCE (in the times of Brześć Kujawski Group of Lendyel Culture) can be associated with climate change resulting in Karaśnia Lake level lowering. The super-chondritic Mo isotopic composition of the continental crust has been attributed to contributions from subducted oceanic slabs and/or sediments, which introduce isotopically light Mo to the mantle. It has been hypothesized that dehydrated oceanic slabs subduct into the deep mantle and contribute to the genesis of ocean island basalts (OIBs). However, OIBs have similar average δ98/95Mo values (−0.22‰± 0.04‰; 2SE; n = 87) to the depleted mantle. Subducted oceanic sediments may create a light-δ98/95Mo reservoir in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, but this has not been investigated in detail. Understanding the Mo isotopic systematics of the continental crust and mantle requires an understanding of the Mo isotopic composition of lithospheric mantle-derived volcanic rocks. The lithosphere in the Tibetan region has experienced multiple stages of oceanic subduction and is thus ideal for studying magmas derived from sediment-modified lithospheric mantle. Mafic ultrapotassic volcanic rocks (UPVRs) from the Sailipu area on the southern Tibetan Plateau have high Mg# values (67.1–72.5) and enriched Sr–Nd isotopic compositions and are primitive magmas derived from the lithospheric mantle. These rocks have higher Ce/Mo ratios (225–422) and lighter δ98/95Mo values (−0.45‰ to −0.13‰) than the depleted mantle, mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs), and OIBs, as well as high ε Hf (t) values at given ε Nd (t) values compared with the terrestrial array (Δε Hf = 4.59–5.73). The involvement of Ca-poor pelagic sediments rather than the lower continental crust and hydrated oceanic slab best accounts for the high Ce/Mo ratios and light δ98/95Mo values of the studied rocks. The Sailipu UPVRs also have higher Nb/Ta (18.9–20.8) and Th/La (2.6–3.4) ratios than arc-related igneous rocks and MORBs, suggesting that their source was phlogopite-bearing lithospheric mantle with a metasomatic vein component (rutile + monazite ± lawsonite). We propose a two-stage geodynamic process to explain the formation of the Sailipu UPVRs: (1) a metasomatic vein component with high Th/La and Ce/Mo ratios formed in the lithospheric mantle during multiple stages of oceanic subduction; (2) high mantle temperatures related to convective thinning of the lithosphere resulted in melting of the vein component and the ambient mantle, which produced hybrid melts of various mantle domains during the post-orogenic stage. The Sailipu UPVRs have enriched Sr–Nd isotopic compositions and high Th/La and Ce/Mo ratios, similar to lamproites that are widespread in the Tethyan orogenic realm from the Mediterranean to the southern Tibetan Plateau. Given that UPVRs with light δ98/95Mo values have also been identified in the Western Alps, we propose that the isotopically light Mo component is widespread in Tethyan lithospheric mantle. This isotopically light Mo in the lithospheric mantle may be a complementary end-member to the isotopically heavier continental crust. Holocene environmental and climate change on the Tibetan Plateau is intensively studied and discussed with the aim to better understand the factors controlling the hydrology of individual river catchments and especially the availability of water which is of utmost significance for the communities downstream in times of rapid climate change. Thus, a late glacial and Holocene sediment record from Lake Heihai in the Kunlun-Pass region was investigated using ostracod and geochemical analyses. Cold and dry conditions were inferred between ca. 12.9 and 12.3 cal ka BP and higher temperatures before and afterwards. The cold spell probably corresponds to the Younger Dryas (YD) event in the North Atlantic region. Warmer and wetter conditions with highest lake levels and decreased lake-water salinity were recorded from ca. 10.8 to 7.0 cal ka BP when the summer monsoon was strengthened. The cold 8.2 cal ka BP event is not significantly recorded in the region probably due to the predominance of the summer monsoon over the westerlies. A declined lake level and increased lake-water salinity as the result of cold and dry conditions are inferred from ca. 7.0 to 4.5 cal ka BP when the strengthening of the mid-latitude westerly circulation probably triggered glacier advances in the catchment. An even lower lake level existed during cold conditions with glacier advances from ca. 4.5 to 1.2 cal ka BP. The level of Lake Heihai rose again after ca. 1.2 cal ka BP due to warmer conditions, causing the retreat of glaciers and higher runoff. Our record from the Kunlun Pass region provides further evidence for the catchment-specific response of hydrographical systems which are partly controlled by glaciers as major water sources. The present study focuses on the mechanism, climate, and sea-level implications of the coastal dune building activity in the eastern coast of Kori Creek (Gulf of Kachchh). Around 10 m thick dune is investigated using sedimentology, geochemistry, and optical chronology. This study suggests that the dune sediment that overlies the Tertiary Oyster Bed is dated to ∼4 ka. The grain size analysis and correlation of textural parameters of the inland dunes and coastal dunes showed no stark difference, revealing they were deposited during the same time. Further, the geochemical data generated from the samples of the coastal dune site represent semi-arid to semi-humid climate with increasing chemical maturity and weakening monsoon during the time of deposition. Based on the current erosion dune face and optical ages of the samples, it can be related that the Kachchh coastline was exposed due to the lowering of the sea level at the time of the deposition of coastal dunes. The sea must be at a lower level to attain a preferable condition for the deposition of dunal landforms. The lowering of the sea exposed the beach with sandy material, which got blown away in strong wind, leading to dunes deposition. The geochemistry of the carbonate sedimentary record is invaluable for understanding the ancient seawater evolution of carbon and redox-sensitive elements. However, the application of carbonate geochemical paleoredox proxies can be limited by our ability to recognize records impacted by syn- and post-depositional diagenesis with pore fluids that have geochemical compositions which are distinct from the overlying seawater—resulting from variable redox conditions, fluid sources, and sediment- vs seawater-buffered conditions. We extend a numerical framework, established for the application of Ca isotopes, for recognizing sediment- vs fluid-buffered alterations during aragonite-to-calcite recrystallization for widely applied carbonate paleoredox proxies: iodine ratios (I/Ca), cerium anomaly (Ce/Ce*), and carbonate-associated Cr, U, and S isotopes. We model endmember reducing and oxidizing fluid diagenetic scenarios, as opposed to incorporating biogeochemical evolution of pore fluids within the model. The results reveal that early, fluid-buffered diagenesis of relatively unevolved seawater ("seawater-buffered") represents the ideal scenario for preservation for all proxies, including C isotopes. Conversely, fluid-buffered alteration in pore fluids with redox conditions highly evolved from the overlying water column is likely to alter the primary carbonate geochemistry. Model calibration against records from the Bahamas Clino and Unda cores suggests each proxy is uniquely sensitive to a given style of diagenetic alteration, with Ce/Ce* the most robust and I/Ca ratios most sensitive to early diagenetic alteration. We recommend multiple strategies, including relationships with C, O, and Ca isotope data, that can be leveraged to identify the preservation of primary seawater geochemistry for a given proxy. Last, we compare the diagenetic model predictions with published records from the Permian/Triassic boundary to demonstrate how incorporating stratigraphic geochemical patterns alongside interpretation of diagenetic model results can support interpretation of secular seawater signals. To improve our understanding of the effects of diagenesis on carbonate paleoredox proxies, additional experimental constraints, field-based observations, and multi-proxy datasets are needed. The evolution of volcanism at the latest stages of continental rifting and its transition to the post-rift stage are poorly known. A Cretaceous rifting episode characterized the Songliao Basin (NE China) between 150 and 105–100 Ma. The transition to the post-rifting stage was marked by an increase in the subsidence rate due to thermal contraction. Here we present new major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic data on the volcanic rocks sampled in wells located in the Songliao Basin. These rocks are representative of two major eruptive cycles: K 1 yc1 (115–106 Ma, syn -rift stage) and K 1 yc3 (105–102 Ma, transition to the post-rift stage). The K 1 yc1 and K 1 yc3 rocks were erupted during the late phases of the Songliao rifting and have been found in the two members of the Yingcheng Formation. The K 1 yc1 rocks consist of trachybasalts, basaltic trachyandesites, and rhyolites. The K 1 yc3 rocks show a homogeneous rhyolitic composition. Both the K 1 yc1 and K 1 yc3 rocks display an alkaline, Within-Plate affinity. The trace element patterns and the isotopic composition of the K 1 yc1 mafic rocks indicate that they are the product of the fractional crystallization from a parent magma with an OIB signature. The felsic rocks from K 1 yc1 and K 1 yc3 have similar major and trace element patterns and originate from fractional crystallization of the K 1 yc1 trachybasalt and assimilation of upper crust material. The bimodal K 1 yc1 volcanism is related to fractionation processes producing low amounts of magmas with intermediate compositions. The lack of mafic eruption in K 1 yc3 is due to the reduction of porosity of the crustal rocks and a transition from 'hot' to 'cold' crust related to the thermal subsidence from syn-rift to post-rift stage. The late stage of the Songliao rifting volcanism coincides with a shift from a roll-backing phase of the Paleo-Pacific slab to its passive sinking in the asthenosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to reconstruct local environmental changes affecting wetlands in middle mountain ranges, this study presents a multi-proxy analysis of the Pialeloup peat record on the Béage Plateau (South-Eastern Massif Central, France). It combines macrofossil, beetle, palynological, and geochemical data. The results are compared with other palaeoecological studies and archaeological data from the Massif Central, Jura Mountains and Alpine regions to discuss the links between local environmental changes and socio-economical dynamics at larger scales. Based on this approach, early environmental changes were highlighted between 6500 and 4800 BC, most certainly due to animal trampling on the Pialeloup bog. These events seem synchronous with human presence from the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic. It suggested that wild animals and human/livestock might have frequented the Béage Plateau wetlands. Then, long-term landscape management was documented for the last 3000 years. Local palaeoecological insights (synanthropic plants, beech-forest clearings, increasing erosion) and archaeological evidence for human settlements (pottery, millstones, and anthropogenic soils) were revealed to start during the Iron Age (400–200 BC). From the Late Iron Age to the Early Medieval period (150 BC–AD 725), human activities combined livestock pasture and local cereal cultivation (such as rye, Secale cereale, as a winter crop). This long-term management produced an open landscape where only small beech/fir woods persisted (Fagus sylvatica/Abies alba). The Maltese Archipelago is a microcosm of long-term Anthropocene human manipulation of the environment spanning the last 8000 years. Despite their apparent fragility, the islands continue to sustain an increasing population. This paper summarises the geoarchaeological methods employed by the ERC-funded FRAGSUS Project and an associated PhD project which explored the terraced landscapes of these islands. Our projects employed archaeological excavation, sediment coring, palynology, soil survey, micromorphology, geochemistry, and absolute dating to obtain a new understanding of long-term landscape change. These scientific analyses are combined with historical data in the form of 19th Century land value assessments which offer new insights into folk concepts of agricultural viability. Landscape changes in the islands began with Neolithic agricultural activities from 5500 cal BC. These caused soil thinning which was further exacerbated by increasingly arid climatic conditions. Soil management strategies are then evident from the late 2nd millennium BC, persisting through medieval times, when the protection of red soils became enshrined in law, and into the present day, when agricultural terraces are the dominant landform in the rural landscape. The combined efforts of these projects exemplify the value of geoarchaeology in providing an environmental narrative that contextualizes the human history of landscapes. Our account of longue durée landscape use, abuse, and change is a fitting case history for the present state of the environment in Malta and beyond. Persistent development is now expanding urban sprawl into the managed, yet still fragile, rural landscape, resulting in a piecewise erasing of valuable historic agriscapes in the Mediterranean region. Lunar impact glasses can provide important information on the bulk compositions of their sources and the impact history of the Moon. Here, we report the chemical composition of fifty-four clean glass spherules containing neither relict clasts nor crystals from the Chang'e-5 (CE5) regolith. They can be subdivided into three compositional groups: (1) mid-Ti basaltic (TiO 2 = 4.1 ∼ 6.5 wt%), (2) low-Ti basaltic (TiO 2 = 1.3 ∼ 3.9 wt%), and (3) high-Al (Al 2 O 3 > 15 wt%). Fifty-one glasses (∼94 %) are mid-Ti basaltic, which form a loose compositional cluster for most major and trace elements. These glasses exhibit considerable variations in SiO 2 (35.3 ∼ 45.3 wt%). Their TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO and CaO show negative correlations with SiO 2 , while the Na 2 O, K 2 O and P 2 O 5 positively correlate with SiO 2 , also yielding a positive correlation between the CIPW normative plagioclase and olivine. These variations likely result from differential vaporization of SiO 2 , strongly suggesting an impact origin of these glasses. Their major and trace element compositions are averagely similar to the bulk-rock, in turn indicating that they were formed from the local regolith. The remaining three glasses, including two low-Ti basaltic and one high-Al variety, exhibit distinct major and trace elements from the regolith, indicating an exotic source. In addition, the mid-Ti basaltic glasses provide another approach for estimating the average composition of the CE5 basalt other than directly measuring the small basalt fragments assuming that the exotic materials in the CE5 regolith were limited. This estimation reveals critical trace element characteristics of the CE5 basalt, e.g., it has higher La/Yb (3.71), Sm/Yb (1.76), Sr/Yb (31.6), and (Eu/Eu*) N (0.45) than KREEP, indicating that CE5 basalt must derive from a non-KREEP source. Chemical modeling indicates that the contribution of KREEP-rich materials in the mantle source should be less than 0.3 %. The trace element characteristics of the CE5 basalt can be reproduced by extensive (80 %) fractional crystallization after low-degree (2 %) melting. We propose that this fractional crystallization process might occur at depth, implying vast igneous underplating (7,250 ∼ 11,750 km3) beneath the CE5 landing area. This study also suggests that the high Th concentration (5.43 ppm) is an inherent property of the CE5 basalt resulting from extensive fractional crystallization. Eucrites exhibit a range of igneous and metamorphic textures and geochemistries that can be used to study the evolution of early planetary differentiation and crust formation in the solar system. We integrated petrologic/textural observations, in-situ geochemical analyses, and thermodynamic modeling to explore the petrogenesis of Elephant Moraine (EET) 90020, an unbrecciated meteorite. We identified microdomains that record relatively high metamorphic temperatures and concluded that diffusion processes likely modified EET 90020 during and/or after peak thermal conditions. There is little evidence that partial melting caused the distribution of minor and trace elements within or among the microdomains. Trace element linear transect measurements within the microdomains imply that phosphate minerals strongly controlled trace element distributions throughout the sample. The discrepancy between the observed metamorphic textures, major element chemistry, and the trace element distributions is a consequence of differing chemical mobility. Multiple processes are influencing geochemistry within a single sample which has implications for the development of petrogenetic models that seek to reconcile the differences observed between eucrite geochemical groups.
