Abstract

Leather industries generate large amounts of biocollagenic wastes that need to be processed. Moreover, the presence of aromatic organic pollutants produced by different industries (pharmaceutical, food, perfume,…) is increasing in surface and groundwater and this is seriously affecting the environment. The purpose of this study is to use biocollagenic wastes (shavings, trimmings and buffing dust) and their pyrolyzed products as bioprecursors of activated carbons for future waste water applications. Activated carbons were prepared by KOH and K 2 CO 3 chemical activation at different temperatures. The characteristics of the precursors and the influence of the activating temperature and activating agent on the process were studied and discussed. The obtained materials and two commercial activated carbons (WAC and YAO) were used as adsorbents to remove the following aromatic organic pollutants from the water: acetanilide, aniline, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, methyl benzoate and phenol. The results obtained show that an increase in the activating temperature led to a higher textural development in the adsorbents. The best activated carbons were obtained by means of KOH chemical activation resulting in S BET and V TOT values of up to 1664 m 2 g −1 and 0.735 cm 3 g −1 respectively. All the adsorbents were predominantly microporous with a certain degree of mesoporosity and a significant amount of nitrogen (up to 3%). The main adsorption mechanism proposed for the different organic pollutants was dispersive interaction influenced by a hydrogen mechanism. Moreover, an increase in the nitrogen content of the adsorbents decreased the adsorption capacity of acetanilide, benzoic acid and aniline, whereas electrostatic influences reduced the adsorption capacity of benzoic acid. Abstract

High surface area activated carbons were obtained from chestnut shells, a lignocellulosic waste of the food industry generated by the peeling process in the preparation of candied products. KOH activation, preceded by a pyrolysis step, was performed in different conditions of activation temperature and inert flow gas. At 750 °C were prepared activated carbons at different KOH/precursor weight ratio. The adsorbent materials obtained were mainly microporous. The best results ( S BET 1792 m 2 g −1 and V TOT 0.729 cm 3 g −1 ) were obtained in the activated carbon obtained at 750 °C with the largest KOH/precursor weight ratio (2:1). The adsorbents were tested in a CO 2 , CH 4 and H 2 adsorption process at high pressure. The activated carbons appear to be excellent candidates in terms of adsorption capacity, selectivity towards CO 2 and for natural gas storage. Abstract: In this research the use of a macroalgae waste, algae meal, from the Agar–Agar industry is studied as precursor of activated carbon. Algae meal has a high carbon and nitrogen content, low ash content and absence of heavy metals. Activated carbons were prepared by KOH chemical activation by conventional and microwave heating system. The precursors studied were: algae meal and the carbonized waste obtained by pyrolysis at 750°C in previous works of energy use of this marine biomass waste. The nature of the precursor, the influence of the activation temperature and KOH/precursor weight ratio were investigated and discussed. Furthermore the effect of conventional and microwave activation, was studied. The best activated carbons were obtained by conventional activation using algae meal as precursor. Under appropriate activation conditions it is possible to obtain adsorbent materials with SBET surface areas and pore volume as high as 2118m2/g and 1.14cm3/g respectively. Microwave activation favours the development of ultramicroporosity whereas medium-size micropore and mesopore formation was predominant in the material obtained by means of the electrical conventional furnace. Converting this macroalgae waste in activated carbon could solve environmental problems since a considerable portion of this residue is disposed of by landfill. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Street characterization might be done through its distance, travel time, average speed, flow or density. In this paper, the Level of Service (LOS) has been used as an alternate measure to characterize street segments, LOS categorizes the traffic status according to quality of service of an urban street, considering three categories: few traffic, moderate congestion and congested. The proposed framework uses three GPS-Data fields (Date-Time, Latitude, and Longitude) to estimate Travel Time, Distance and Speed at two different levels of analysis: GPS-Data traces and street segments. At segment level of analysis average speed has been used to calculate LOS scale and characterize street segments with a LOS, color and performance. As a case of study, a subset of 1012 GPS-Data traces, gathered from Beijing, China, were analyzed. This trajectory data corresponds to 90minutes of a Taxi. The implementation of this framework showed that, using only three GPS-Data fields, traffic information about individual vehicles can be estimated and used to characterize street segments with the average speed and its corresponding LOS. Abstract: As part of a research project aiming to characterise the most important Spanish floral honeys, the carbohydrate analysis of 109 honey samples was carried out. The main unifloral sources, identified by pollen analysis, were Citrus, heather, Eucalyptus, rosemary, Echium and Rosaceae. A high proportion of multifloral samples were also present. A GC method based on the use of two different stationary phases allowed the analysis of a high number of carbohydrates. A quantitation procedure which takes into account the possible errors caused by unidentified overlapping compounds was employed: two monosaccharides, 14 disaccharides and 21 trisaccharide peaks were quantitatively determined. Although qualitative results were similar for all samples, a wide range of quantitative variability was found, even within each source. Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to the carbohydrate concentration data in order to study possible relationships among the floral sources and sugar composition. Several carbohydrates were found to be characteristic of the most important honey types, although their concentrations in honey do not allow an unambiguous classification of the main unifloral sources. Abstract: The observation that carbon activation by KOH gives rise to a significant formation of cyanide moieties is confirmed. However, contrary to what has been reported, our results show that the N2 used as an atmosphere during the activation process has little to do with the formation of such cyanide moieties. The main source of cyanides is ascribed to structural nitrogen already present in the precursors. Reducing species (H2 and metallic K) formed during the KOH carbon activation process might promote the transformation of that structural nitrogen to cyanides. In order to minimise cyanide formation (and related environmental concerns), materials with low nitrogen content should be selected as precursors for the preparation of KOH-activated carbons. Abstract: The objective of the present research was to evaluate the effect of fibre morphology (e.g., length, width, fibrillation, broken ends, content of fines and number of fibres per gram) on flocculation and drainage properties of fibre–cement suspensions and on physical properties of the fibre–cement composites. Mechanical refining was used to change the morphological properties of Eucalyptus and Pinus pulps. Results show that the mechanical refining increased the size of the formed flocs and decreased the concentration of free small particles (with dimensions between 1 and 20 µm) as a consequence of the increased fibrillation and content of fines, which increased the capacity of the fibres to capture the mineral particles. High levels of refining were necessary for Pinus pulp to obtain cement retention values similar to those obtained by unrefined Eucalyptus pulp. This is due to the higher number of fibres per gram in Eucalyptus pulp than in Pinus pulp. Pulp refining improved the packing of the particles and, although decreased the drainage rate, it contributed to a less porous structure, which improved the microstructure of the composite. Abstract

Green and Sustainable activated carbons were obtained by one-step alkaline chemical activation process using a food industry lignocellulosic waste (pomegranate peels) as precursor. A non-harmful activating agent (alkali carbonate) was used, a more sustainable alternative to alkali hydroxides. The pomegranate peels-based activated carbons present high carbon content (>94%), low ash content (<0.5%) and significant nitrogen content (>1.0%); this last value is important because they can be highly effective CO 2 adsorbents with the aim of improving biogas for renewable energy production. The activated carbons obtained were essentially microporous materials (micropore volume >82%), with BET specific surface area up to 1860 m2/g and total pore volume up to 0.879 cm3/g. These adsorbents were very efficient materials to retain CO 2 at high pressure with an adsorption capacity similar or superior to experimental and commercial activated carbons. The CO 2 adsorption capacity increased mainly with increasing activation temperature, the highest value being 717 mg/g at 3 MPa and 25 °C. Ultramicropores were very efficient in the CO 2 and CH 4 adsorption at low pressure while large micropores and small mesopores governed the high-pressure sorption behavior. These materials had negligible H 2 adsorption capacity which makes them useful for separating gas mixtures in order to obtain pure H 2.
