This report studies the influence of alkali elements (Na, K) on the morphological, structural, and optoelectronic properties of CIGS ceramic tile solar cells. Several ceramic enamels with altered chemical composition in terms of the amount of alkali elements have been tested and compared. The influences of the type of alkali, their amount, and transfer mechanism have been investigated. The solar cell device has been assembled and characterized. The results obtained indicate that alkali elements (combination of Na and K) modified the surface roughness, and their diffusion from the enamel toward the absorber affects the structural and final optoelectronic properties of the device. Alkali doping improves the Ga incorporation in the crystal lattice and results in an increase in open circuit voltage values, fill factor, and device efficiency. The optimal amounts of alkali have also been determined. The best conversion efficiency is achieved for the cell with 4% wt Na 2 O and 3.2% wt K 2 O (Eff. = 3.5%), which presents an improvement of 30% in efficiency relative to the standard solar cell sample chosen for comparative purposes. In this work the use of porcelain stoneware tiles as alternative substrates for CIGS thin film solar cells for the development of specific applications as those related to building integration (BIPV, BAPV) are reported. Two types of porcelain stoneware have been compared: the conventional tile (STD) and the ecological tile (ECO). The ECO ceramic paste formulation has been designed adding industrial wastes (recycled glass, sludges and chamote). Chemical, technological and functional properties of the paste have been performed. The CIGS absorber has been synthesized by an easy and low-cost way of preparation using co-precipitation method. The solar cell device has been completed and fully characterized. The achieved results indicate better performances for ECO paste compared to the STD, stated in improved mechanical resistance, thickness and morphology. It is demonstrated that both tiles are suitable for solar cell applications, but ECO substrate developed higher energy conversion efficiency of 1.3%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of nondiabetic immune-deficient NOD-SCID mouse model in assessing the functional capacity of isolated human islets. We transplanted 2000 islet equivalents obtained from six preparations used for human islet transplantation in three patients under the kidney capsule of groups of 10 mice. Human (Hu) C-peptide and insulin levels were determined following intraperitoneal (IP) glucose challenge at days 0, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60, 90, and 120. The Hu C-peptide level >1.5 ng/mL was the threshold for islet function in this model. The first patient did not achieve insulin independence and had minimal (0.5 ng/mL) fasting C-peptide levels that mirrored the low C-peptide levels observed in the mice. After the first infusion, the insulin requirements were reduced by 50% in the second patient. She became insulin free 10 days after her second infusion with a C-peptide level of 3.0 ng/mL, which corresponded to the peak C-peptide level (3.9 ng/mL) observed in the mice. By 150 days'' posttransplant, the decline in C-peptide level paralleled the decline observed in mice. Within 2 weeks after the first transplant, insulin dose was reduced by 75% in the third patient, which corresponded to the robust C-peptide production in mice (7.3 ng/mL). Both patient and mice had a delay in islet function following the second infusion. She remained with a C-peptide level of 1.8 ng/mL and insulin free until suffering a rejection episode 3 months later. We observed that human islet graft function in NOD-SCID mice correlated with clinical response in islet transplant recipients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Spray pyrolysis is a promising method for producing thin, transparent films on glass substrates. ZnO thin films synthesized by this method exhibit high crystallinity, adhesion and chemical resistance. They also possess the ability to degrade water pollutants and exhibit antibacterial properties under UV light. The crystalline structure of these films has been studied using grazing X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to investigate their composition and purity. Other techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy were also employed. ICP-OES was used to evaluate photocatalyst leaching. These transparent thin films have exceptional optical properties, with a transmittance of 95%. The photocatalytic degradation of 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) by ZnO thin films showed a degradation rate of 94% in 270 min with a kinetic constant value of 3.1 × 10−3 mM/min. The films are also highly durable and reusable, exhibiting superior performance compared to other ZnO photocatalysts. The bactericidal activity of these transparent films was also evaluated, with a value of 60.6% being obtained using Escherichia coli after irradiating the films with UV light for 3 h. As the production of ceramic porcelain stoneware in Spain is totally conditioned by the importation of ball clays, because of the lack of adequate Spanish ball clays, this work has focused on the formulation of ceramic porcelain body from Spanish clays purified by means of physical removal processes. This method was applied to three Spanish clays containing common clay impurities of iron (hematite and siderite) and organic matter. Iron removal was carried out using the wet sieve method, the hydrocycloning method and the electromagnetic filtering method, obtaining a reduction in iron content of up to 80 wt%, while the clay containing organic matter was treated thermally at 400 °C for 30 min so as to leave it almost completely purified. These treated clays, after being characterized (chemical and mineralogical composition, plasticity, organic carbon, thermal behaviour and colour), were used in the porcelain stoneware body composition instead of imported clays, the result being a composition capable of substituting the standard porcelain stoneware formulation in terms of sintering, morphology, colour, flexural strength and dilatometry. Abstract: Substance P (SP) is a neuropeptide that can modulate inflammatory mediator release through activation of NK1 receptors (NK1R). Some studies have also suggested the involvement of SP in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced fever. However, the precise contribution of this neuropeptide to the pathways activated during fever is unknown. In this study we investigated the effect of a selective NK1R antagonist, SR140333B, on the febrile response induced by LPS and cytokines. Our results show that the systemic injection of SR140333B did not modify the fever induced by LPS at a dose that is able to reduce protein extravasation induced by SP in the skin. On the other hand, intracerebroventricular administration of SR140333B significantly reduced the fever induced by peripheral injection of LPS. These data emphasize an important role for SP in the central nervous system during the febrile response to LPS, and are reinforced by the fact that intracerebroventricular injection of SP also induced fever in a dose-dependent manner in captopril-treated rats. Considering that the febrile response can result from the generation of several endogenous pyrogens, among them interleukin (IL)-1β and macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (CCL3/MIP-1α), we also examined the effect of SR140333B on the fever induced by these cytokines which act through prostaglandin-dependent and -independent mechanisms, respectively. Surprisingly, SR140333B did not modify the febrile response to IL-1β or CCL3/MIP-1α. Altogether these data suggest that the central action of SP is essential for LPS-, but not for IL-1β- or CCL3/MIP-1α-induced fever. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Rosetta spacecraft was launched in 2004 and, after several planetary and two asteroid fly-bys, arrived at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August 2014. After escorting the comet for two years and executing its scientific observations, the mission ended on 30 September 2016 through a touch down on the comet surface. This paper describes how the Planetary Science Archive (PSA) and the Planetary Data System – Small Bodies Node (PDS-SBN) worked with the Rosetta instrument teams to prepare the science data collected over the course of the Rosetta mission for inclusion in the science archive. As Rosetta is an international mission in collaboration between ESA and NASA, all science data from the mission are fully archived within both the PSA and the PDS. The Rosetta archiving process, supporting tools, archiving systems, and their evolution throughout the mission are described, along with a discussion of a number of the challenges faced during the Rosetta implementation. The paper then presents the current status of the archive for each of the science instruments, before looking to the improvements planned both for the archive itself and for the Rosetta data content. The lessons learned from the first 13 years of archiving on Rosetta are finally discussed with an aim to help future missions plan and implement their science archives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Space Agency (ESA) Planetary Science Archive (PSA) is undergoing a significant refactoring of all its components to improve the services provided to the scientific community and the public. The PSA supports ESA's missions exploring the Solar System by archiving scientific peer-reviewed observations as well as engineering data sets. This includes the Giotto, SMART-1, Huygens, Venus Express, Mars Express, Rosetta, Exomars 2016, Exomars RSP, BepiColombo, and JUICE missions. The PSA is offering a newly designed graphical user interface which is simultaneously meant to maximize the interaction with scientific observations and also minimise the efforts needed to download these scientific observations. The PSA still offers the same services as before (i.e., FTP, documentation, helpdesk, etc.). In addition, it will support the two formats of the Planetary Data System (i.e., PDS3 and PDS4), as well as providing new ways for searching the data products with specific metadata and geometrical parameters. As well as enhanced services, the PSA will also provide new services to improve the visualisation of data products and scientific content (e.g., spectra, etc.). Together with improved access to the spacecraft engineering data sets, the PSA will provide easier access to scientific data products that will help to maximize the science return of ESA's space missions. Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the molecular signatures that are predictive of nonfunctional islet preparations. We examined functional outcomes of six islet preparations accepted for research purposes from human donors. Islet were maintained on culture in M-SFM media for 7 to 14 days then transplanted into NOD-SCID mice. At the time of transplant, RNA was extracted from a second aliquot of cultured islets for expression analysis. We also performed gene expression analysis using high-density Affymetrix U133A GeneChips on these preparations. Among 1833 genes selected, hierarchical clustering was performed using the GeneSpring software package (Silicon Genetics, Inc.), where 754 genes (higher in nonfunctional) and 177 genes (lower in nonfunctional) were differentially expressed with tight pattern of expression. Islets with low functionality showed high relative levels of expression of hypoxia-induced genes and increased frequency of expression of proinflammatory and proangiogenic genes, such as vascular endothelial growth factor. Conversely, nonfunctional islets had low levels of insulin-processing message. The general profile of these low-functionality islets shows attempted recovery from hypoxic assault and little effort directed toward insulin production and secretion. Further identification of the molecular signature of nonfunctional islets could allow the development of a potency assay for human transplantation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
