After prolonged hospitalization, the assessment of nutritional status and the identification of adequate nutritional support is of paramount importance. In this observational study, we aimed at assessing the presence of a malnutrition condition in SARS-Cov2 patients after the acute phase and the effects of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program on nutritional and functional status. We recruited 48 patients (26 males/22 females) admitted to our Rehabilitation Unit after discharge from acute Covid Hospitals in northern Italy with negative swab for SARS-Cov2. We used the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria to identify patients with different degrees of malnutrition. Patients underwent a 3 to 4-week individual multidisciplinary rehabilitation program consisting of nutritional intervention (energy intake 27to30 kcal/die/kg and protein intake 1–1.3 g/die/kg), exercise for total body conditioning and progressive aerobic exercise with cycle- and arm-ergometer (45 min, 5 days/week). At admission and discharge from our Rehabilitation Unit, body composition and phase angle (PhA) (BIA101 Akern), muscle strength (handgrip, HG) and physical performance (Timed-Up-and-Go, TUG) were assessed. At admission in all patients the mean weight loss, as compared to the habitual weight, was −12.1 (7.6)%, mean BMI was 25.9 (7.9) kg/m2, mean Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Index (ASMI) was 6.6 (1.7) kg/m2 for males and 5.4 (1.4) kg/m2 for females, mean phase angle was 2.9 (0.9)°, mean muscle strength (HG) was 21.1 (7.8) kg for males and 16.4 (5.9) kg for females, mean TUG value was 23.7 (19.2) s. Based on GLIM criteria 29 patients (60% of the total) showed a malnutrition condition. 7 out of those 29 patients (24%) presented a mild/moderate grade and 22 patients (76%) a severe grade. After a rehabilitation program of an average duration of 25 days (range 13–46) ASMI increased, with statistically significant differences only in females (p = 0.001) and HG improved only in males (p = 0.0014). In all of the patients, body weight did not change, CRP/albumin (p < 0.05) and TUG (p < 0.001) were reduced and PhA increased (p < 0.01). We diagnosed a malnutrition condition in 60% of our post SARS-Cov2 patients. An individualized nutritional intervention with adequate energy and protein intake combined with tailored aerobic and strengthening exercise improved nutritional and functional status. • Majority of Post-Covid-19 patients are malnourished based on GLIM criteria. • Nutritional and exercise intervention improved outcome of Post-Covid-19 patients. • Post-Covid-19 patients need nutritional surveillance or nutritional care plan. • We identify seven different indexes of plant nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). • We ask how NUE might respond to 22 years of N fertilisation, liming and grazing. • NUE significantly decreased under the chronic addition of multiple nutrients. • Limitation of other key nutrients (e.g. P, K, Mg) contributed to reduce NUE. • Liming significantly increased plant NUE through soil pH enhancement. Grassland management intensification can greatly influence nitrogen (N) dynamics between aboveground and belowground compartments mainly because of the large amount of available N forms, which are repeatedly added to soils. A better understanding of how chronic fertilisation might affect N use efficiency (NUE) in plants can contribute to reducing N losses from soils and improve the sustainability of managed grasslands. Here we address how NUE might be affected by (1) the addition of key nutrients (e.g. N, P, K, Mg) in different combinations, (2) grazing by rabbits, and (3) liming (i.e. CaCO 3 applications) in a 22-year-old permanent grassland experiment established in Berkshire, UK, in 1991. We first calculate seven different NUE indexes, which are known to respond either to changes in soil N availability (i.e. endogenous N inputs from soil N mineralization processes) or to exogenous N inputs (i.e. synthetic N fertiliser). We found that plant NUE calculated as plant biomass produced per unit of N acquired significantly decreased under the chronic addition of multiple nutrients (NPKMg) and was even lower under N-only applications. Most NUE indexes significantly decreased under grazing but greatly increased under liming applications. We found evidence that NUE indexes, which accounted for endogenous N sources decreased at increased rates of soil N mineralization. Finally, we found no significant relationships between any of the NUE indexes and estimates of soil N losses (Mg N ha−1) or N retention in soils (i.e. units of soil N retained per unit of N added) calculated from changes in net soil N budget over 22 years. Our study carried out on relatively acidic sandy soils suggests how liming applications in combination with low levels of multi-nutrient additions (NPKMg) can significantly improve plant biomass production per unit of N added thus contributing to enhance the sustainability of managed grassland ecosystems. Résumé Cet article a deux objectifs : vérifier la structure factorielle et la fiabilité des indicateurs de qualité environnementale résidentielle perçue (PREQIs, Bonaiuto et al., 2003) dans le contexte français et tester un modèle à trois niveaux, dans lequel (a) des PREQIs plus spécifiques expliquent le premier niveau, (b) des PREQIs plus globaux portant sur le rythme de vie (par exemple l’attribution de qualités telles que « Stimulant » vs. « Ennuyeux » et « Relaxant » vs. « Stressant ») expliquent le deuxième niveau, et (c) l’attachement au quartier représente la variable ultime. Les participants ( n = 383) sont des habitants de Paris qui ont rempli un questionnaire incluant la version française des échelles des PREQIs (version longue) et d’attachement au quartier (Neighbourhood Attachment [NA]) (Bonaiuto et al., 2006). Les PREQIs sont validés en France avec 139 items et 19 indicateurs (plus un indicateur composé de 8 items pour l’attachement au lieu). La modélisation par équations structurelles (SEM) présente un effet indirect entre certains PREQIs et l’attachement au quartier via les indicateurs du rythme de vie, qui sont influencés par les PREQIs et directement en lien avec l’attachement au quartier. Plus précisément, certains PREQIs influent sur certaines dimensions du rythme de vie : percevoir son quartier comme relaxant est associé à des caractéristiques de design, de santé environnementale et de forte sécurité, alors que percevoir son quartier comme stimulant est lié à la présence d’activités humaines et de services. This paper has two aims: testing the Perceived Residential Environment Quality Indicators (PREQIs’, Bonaiuto et al., 2003) factorial structure and reliability in the French context and testing a three-level model where more specific PREQIs cover the first level, more molar PREQIs about pace of life (i.e., the attribution of qualities such as stimulating vs. boring and relaxing vs. distressing) cover the second level, and neighbourhood attachment represents the final outcome variable. Participants ( n = 383) were residents of Paris who filled in a questionnaire including the French version of the extended PREQIs and Neighbourhood Attachment (NA) scales (Bonaiuto et al., 2006). PREQIs are validated in France with 139 items and 19 indicators (plus one indicator composed of 8 items for place attachment). The path analysis model presents an indirect connection between some PREQIs and NA via pace of life indicators, which are influenced by PREQIs and are directly associated to NA. More specifically, different PREQIs affect different pace of life dimensions: the perception of a more relaxed neighbourhood is associated to a high quality of design features, environmental health, and safety, whereas the perception of a more stimulating neighbourhood is connected to the presence of human activities and services. Changes in day length regulate the proper timing of flowering in several plant species. The genetic architecture of this process is based on CCT-domain proteins, many of which interact with NF-Y subunits to regulate transcription of target genes. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana , the CONSTANS CCT-domain protein is a central photoperiodic sensor. We will discuss how the diurnal rhythms of its transcription and protein accumulation are generated, and how the protein engages into multiple complexes to control production of a systemic flowering signal. Regulatory parallels will be drawn between Arabidopsis and major crops that indicate conservation of some CCT/NF-Y modules during plant evolution. This paper adds to the relatively few European studies on the pedestrian friendliness of urban areas, and on transport walking. Using the Human Environment Interaction (HEI) model (Küller, 1991), the study explores the associations between perceived neighbourhood spatial-physical and social environmental qualities and walking to neighbourhood destinations, and examines whether these associations are mediated by the emotional relationship to the residential neighbourhood. One hundred and ten urban residents in the city of Malmö, Sweden, completed a web-based survey, including measurements of walking intentions and behaviours, and the short version of both the Perceived Residential Environment Quality Indicators (PREQIs) and the Neighbourhood Attachment Scale (NAS). Structural Equation Modeling revealed direct effects of individual factors and neighbourhood spatial-physical and social environmental qualities on transport walking. The effect of environmental qualities was partly mediated by participants' emotional relationship to the residential neighbourhood. Spatial-physical as well as social-relational features of the neighbourhood seem to play a role in walking intentions and behaviours, thereby emphasising the importance of considering both aspects in measures to improve urban pedestrian friendliness. Abstract: Nanoparticles as potential carriers for local drug transfer are an alternative to systemic drug delivery into the inner ear. We report on the first in vitro tests of a new ferrogel consisting of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and a Pluronic® F127 (PF127) copolymer. Pluronic copolymers possess a unique viscosity-adjustable property that makes PF127 gels easy to handle compared to conventional cross-linked hydrogels. This ferrogel was successfully tested in cadaver human temporal bones as well as in organotypic explant cultures of mouse inner ears. SPIONs were identified by light microscopy and localized with different imaging modes in energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. Our approach shows a promising possibility to use iron oxide nanoparticles, which are suitable for visualization and characterization at both the light- and electron-microscopic levels.
