2. Severe COVID-19 pneumonia in Piacenza, Italy — A cohort study of the first pandemic wave.

- Abstract
Piacenza is the closest city to the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cluster in Italy and has the highest national COVID-19 death rates per population. The objective of this study is to present characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to medical departments of the Hospital of Piacenza during the first wave of the epidemic. A total of 218 patients with confirmed or suspect COVID-19 and severe pneumonia were included from February 21st to May 15th, 2020. Routinely-collected clinical and laboratory data were retrospectively retrieved from electronic medical files. A Cox proportional-hazards model was fit to assess the association of treatment and other variables with death. Median age of patients was 68 years; 150 patients (69%) had comorbidities, mainly hypertension (107, 49%). Overall, 185 (85%) patients had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) on admission, including 103 (47%) with moderate or severe ARDS. Chest computed tomography scan showed bilateral disease in 201 (98%) and extensive lung involvement in 79 (50%) patients. Most patients received antiviral treatment (187, 86%) and corticosteroids (134, 61%). All patients received respiratory support and 64 (29%) were admitted to intensive care unit. As of June 30th, 100 patients (46%) died, 109 patients (50%) were discharged, and 9 patients (4%) were still hospitalized. In multivariable Cox analysis, age above 65 years, having more than one comorbidity, severe ARDS, low platelet counts, and high LDH levels at admission were associated with mortality, while having diarrhea at admission was associated with survival. The use of antivirals or corticosteroids was not associated with survival. Overall case fatality rates were high and associated with comorbidities, extensive lung involvement, ARDS at admission, and advanced age. Public Administrations are frequently entitled to intervene in building stocks with energy rehabilitation actions. Unfortunately, the monetary budget at their disposal is generally limited and, consequently, a prioritization criterion is needed to optimize its allocation. The classification of the building energy performance is increasingly used by Public Administrations for this purpose. Here we argue that a proper prioritization criterion should depend upon the potential subjects to which the rehabilitated buildings are given back. If the energy rehabilitation is conducted on buildings that will be assigned to new dwellers, it would be preferable to use the energy class – which is based on a standardized energy consumption – because a change of the building users will occur with a consequent plausible change of the building energy usage profile. Instead, if same dwellers will occupy the retrofitted building, a criterion based on a usage profile – that is actually the one established by these occupants – seems to be more appropriate. The priority orders of 23 buildings of the Sicilian stock, obtained using their energy class and real energy consumption, are presented and compared. Results show at which extent these two rankings differ, thus warning Public Administrations about prioritization criteria to adopt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Vegetation growth parameters and leaf temperature: Experimental results from a six plots green roofs' system.

The paper provides a contribution for populating database of three physical parameters needed to model energy performance of buildings with green roofs: “coverage ratio” ( σ f ), leaf area index (LAI) and leaf temperature ( T f ). On purpose, six plant species were investigated experimentally: Phyla nordiflora, Aptenia lancifolia , Mesembryanthenum barbatus , Gazania nivea, Gazania uniflora , and Sedum . Proper ranges of the cited parameters have been found for each species. The here indicated ranges of σ f values refer to different growth levels of the species in the same lapse of time, that is four months. Single measured LAI values are also reported for the same plants. As for the T f (upper and lower layer), ranges of revealed temperatures refer to those detected from 10:30 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. of a selected day. Additionally, the dependence of T f on climatic parameters was investigated. A linear equation resulted the best fitting curve for all experimental T f data and the corresponding solar radiation data (with autocorrelation coefficients between 0.80 and 0.98). Furthermore, the effect potentially produced on building energy consumption by these species was analyzed using a simulation tool. - Abstract
In this paper, a dynamic simulation of a building located in the Campus University of Palermo, Italy, has been carried out. We considered two different scenarios; in the first one, the building as it is, with a conventional covering, while in the second one the roof was equipped with a green roof. The results of the two simulations have been compared, suggesting that such building component could contribute to the energy savings of the building. The European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), formerly known as European Group for Bone Marrow Transplantation, was established in 1974 in the Netherlands to share experiences, to promote research and clinical studies and to set up registries in the field of hematopoietic tissue transplantation. At the present time more 400 European and non-European centers are members of the EBMT group. In 1984 a new Working Party was created (Solid Tumors) with the aim to investigate the role of high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell support in the fields of adult and pediatric solid tumors. By January 2000 more than 14 000 patients were registered, and at the present time this Registry is the world largest database on this subject. Several phase III randomized clinical trials have recently started on behalf of the Group in different diseases (breast carcinoma, small cell lung cancer, ovarian carcinoma, germ cell tumors and Ewing''s family sarcoma). Hundreds of randomized patients will finally produce clearer information on this still experimental therapeutic modality. This paper will describe the EBMT Solid Tumors Working Party Registry updated results as well as the main ongoing studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
