Lake browning is considered a severe water quality problem in lake ecosystems, but it has received considerably less attention in water protection than eutrophication. Current metrics used in lake surveillance monitoring programmes, including the European Union's Water Framework Directive, do not reflect browning sufficiently. The aims of the study were to explore the potential role of the functionality of rotifers as browning indicators and to improve understanding of the environmental parameters driving the functionality and diversity of rotifers. Seasonal data on rotifer communities and water quality from seven lakes with differing water colour and trophic conditions were analysed. The feeding guilds of rotifers enabled differentiation between lakes in terms of their ecological conditions, and, in particular, eutrophic and brown-water lakes were clearly distinguished from other lakes. The guild ratio of rotifers was positively affected by water colour, but inversely related to total phosphorus concentration. Our results suggest that zooplankton functionality provides a potential tool to assess ecosystem dynamics, particularly when assessing lake browning. Thus, our results suggest that application of the guild ratio of rotifers is a promising method to estimate the general browning status of lakes and may complement the metrics used in Water Framework Directive. • Artificial ditching of catchments accelerates lake brownification. • Effect of ditching is strongest in catchments with high peatland coverage. • Effect of ditching is stronger for water color than for DOC concentrations. • Ditching affects water color mainly through its impact on Fe concentrations. • Ditching tends to increase water color: DOC ratio of lake waters. We studied the connections between lake water quality and the density of artificial ditching in lake catchments. Water color and the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and iron (Fe) in lake water increased with increasing ditch density. Additionally, the water color:DOC ratio increased along a ditch density gradient because ditching had a stronger effect on color than on DOC. This was mainly due to the positive effect of ditching on the Fe concentration in lakes. Color:DOC ratio was strongly dependent on Fe up to Fe concentrations of 1–1.5 mg L−1. Thus, the water color of lakes with Fe concentrations < 1 mg L−1 will respond especially strongly to the effects of catchment ditching. The effects of ditching were strongest in catchments with high peatland coverage due to their high ditch density and high storage of organic carbon and Fe. • Increasing water colour (brownification) has received little attention in lake status assessment. • High-colour lakes may be more sensitive to increasing water colour than low-colour lakes. • Indicators used in lake monitoring must be developed to reveal the effects of brownification. Brownification or increasing water colour is a common problem in aquatic ecosystems. It affects both physico-chemical properties and biotic communities of the impacted waters. A common view is that lakes having low background water colour are most sensitive to brownification. In this article, we show that although low-colour and high-colour lakes respond differently to brownification, the effects on biotic communities can be strong irrespective of water colour. For phytoplankton production, the effect of brownification can be positive at low colour and negative at high colour, the relative effect being strongest at high colour. For fish foraging, the disturbance per increasing unit of colour may also be highest at high-colour conditions. Additionally, the presently used classification systems mostly describe the effects of eutrophication and do not account for the effects of brownification. Studies on the whole colour range of lakes are needed and indicators used in the ecological status assessment of lakes must be developed to reveal the effects of brownification.
