Background: Reducing rearfoot eversion is a commonly desired effect in clinical practice to prevent or treat musculoskeletal dysfunction. Interventions that pull the lower limb into external rotation may reduce rearfoot eversion. Objective: This study investigated whether the use of external rotation elastic bands, of different levels of stiffness, will decrease rearfoot eversion during walking. We hypothesized that the use of elastic bands would decrease rearfoot eversion and that the greater the band stiffness, the greater the eversion reduction. Method: Seventeen healthy participants underwent three-dimensional kinematic analysis of the rearfoot and shank. The participants walked on a treadmill with and without high- and low-stiffness bands. Frontal-plane kinematics of the rearfoot-shank joint complex was obtained during the stance phase of walking. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to compare discrete variables that described rearfoot eversion-inversion: mean eversion-inversion; eversion peak; and eversion-inversion range of motion. Results: The low-stiffness and high-stiffness bands significantly decreased eversion and increased mean eversioninversion (p≤0.037) and eversion peak (p≤0.006) compared with the control condition. Both bands also decreased eversion-inversion range of motion (p≤0.047) compared with control by reducing eversion. The high-stiffness band condition was not significantly different from the low-stiffness band condition for any variables (p≥0.479). Conclusion: The results indicated that the external rotation bands decreased rearfoot eversion during walking. This constitutes preliminary experimental evidence suggesting that increasing external rotation moments at the lower limb may reduce rearfoot eversion, which needs further testing. Background Sleep disturbances and depression are costly and potentially disabling conditions that affect a considerable proportion of older adults. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of 6 months of elastic band exercises on sleep quality and depression of wheelchair-bound older adults in nursing homes. Methods One hundred twenty-seven older adults from 10 nursing homes participated in this cluster randomized controlled trial, and 114 completed the study. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental group (five nursing homes, n = 59) and control group (five nursing homes, n = 55). A 40-minute wheelchair-bound senior elastic band exercise program was implemented 3 times per week for 6 months. Sleep quality and depression of the participants were examined at baseline, after 3 months, and at the end of the 6-month study. Discussion Participants in the experimental group had longer sleep durations, better habitual sleep efficiencies, and less depression than the control group at 3 months of the study and maintained them throughout the rest of the 6-month study. Conclusions Nursing home directors could recruit volunteers to learn the program and lead the elderly residents in wheelchairs in practicing the wheelchair-bound senior elastic band exercises regularly in the facilities. Background: The number of older adults using wheelchairs in nursing homes is over 50% of that population, and many of them use wheelchairs due to muscle weakness in the lower extremities. Muscles of older adults are trainable, and progressive resistance exercises using elastic bands can increase muscle strength in older adults. Objectives: To test the effectiveness of six-month Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band exercises on the functional fitness of older adults in nursing homes. Design: Cluster randomized trial. Settings: Ten nursing homes, southern Taiwan. Participants: 127 participants were recruited, and 114 of them completed the study. Inclusion criteria were: (1) aged 65 and over, (2) using wheelchairs for mobility, (3) living in the facility for at least three months, (4) cognitively intact, and (5) heavily or moderate dependency in their activities of daily living. The mean age of the participants was 79.15 (7.03) years, and 98.20% of them had chronic illnesses. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental (five nursing homes, n = 59) or the control (five nursing homes, n = 55) group based on the nursing homes where they stayed. A 40-min Wheelchair-bound Senior Elastic Band exercise program was implemented three times per week for six months for the experimental group participants. The functional fitness (activities of daily living, lung capacity, body flexibilities, muscle power and endurance) of the participants was examined at baseline, after three months, and at the end of the six months study. The mixed-design, two-way analysis of variance was used to detect the interaction effects, and one-way repeated measures analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were performed to analyze the within-group and between-group differences. Background: Elastic resistance bands (ERB) combined with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are often used in resistance muscle training programs, which have potential effects on peripheral muscle strength. However, the effects of the combination of ERB and PNF on respiratory muscle strength warrant further investigation. Objectives: The assessment of the effects of PNF combined with ERB on respiratory muscle strength. Method: Twenty healthy, right-handed females were included. Subjects were randomized to either the resistance training program group (TG, n=10) or the control group (CG, n=10). Maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) and inspiratory pressure (MIP) were measured before and after four weeks of an upper extremity resistance training program. The training protocol consisted of upper extremity PNF combined with ERB, with resistance selected from 1 repetition maximum protocol. Results: PNF combined with ERB showed significant increases in MIP and MEP (p<0.05). In addition, there were significant differences between the TG and CG regarding ΔMIP (p=0.01) and ΔMEP (p=0.04). Conclusions: PNF combined with ERB can have a positive impact on respiratory muscle strength. These results may be useful with respect to cardiopulmonary chronic diseases that are associated with reduced respiratory muscle strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study appraised the feasibility of an elastic band exercise program for older adults in wheelchairs. A descriptive program review survey was used. A wheelchair-bound senior elastic band (WSEB) exercise program tailored to older adults in wheelchairs was initially developed by a group of 12 experts. A feasibility appraisal survey was administered to 10 older adults in wheelchairs through individual interviews after 4 weeks of the WSEB program. Study participants revealed that the WSEB program was feasible, safe, appropriate, and helpful to them. Participants further suggested practicing the WSEB program 3 times/week for 40 min/session in a group of 15-20 people. The finalized WSEB program has 2 levels: the basic and the advanced WSEB program. It is suggested that the basic level to be taught first with practice until participants are familiar with those exercises before proceeding to the advanced level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The ready made garment in Egypt is facing tremendous competition in the local and external markets. Most of the garment mills pay more attention to the quality export products and neglect the local market, so by the time they are losing the local market share which is gained by the Chinese and the Syrian products. One of the major problems found in many ready made garments is the degradation of the elastic band due to laundry. Therefore, the aim of the work is to study the methods of testing and factors affecting the performance of the elastic band due to successive washes, in order to insure good performance during usage. One of the large companies in knitting garment manufacturing received customer complains from stores that the elastic waste band used in the under wear is becoming lose and loses its elasticity after washing. Therefore, 15 samples from different types of elastic band were tested, using different materials, structure, finishing methods and widths. Results show that the type of the rubber band used and the way of storage before and after manufacture have a great influence on the performance of the elastic band in the garment. A testing technique is introduced to insure the performance of the rubber band is going to be reliable during its life time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

'Regional activation' has been identified within the supraspinatus and infraspinatus. Previous EMG studies have provided insight on the different functions of the sub-regions within the supraspinatus and infraspinatus, however, to date timing of peak EMG activation has not been investigated. To assess how theses sub-regions function during commonly prescribed rehabilitation exercises, electrodes were inserted into the supraspinatus - anterior and posterior- and infraspinatus - superior and middle - of 22 healthy participants. For each sub-region, normalized EMG data - amplitude and timing - was collected from nine rehabilitation exercises - three with an elastic band and six an exercise ball. Supraspinatus posterior and infraspinatus superior had similar activation levels between elastic band exercises, but the timing of peak activation was exercise specific. In all elastic band exercises, supraspinatus posterior activated prior to supraspinatus anterior. All ball exercises elicited low-amplitude muscle activation; dynamic ball exercises had higher peak muscle activation than their static counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transmission of healthcare-associated pathogens is mainly related to the massive flow of patients with infections in hospitals, presenting surfaces as potential transmission sources of these microorganisms. The physiotherapist who works in the intensive care area has become a specialist in daily routine in critical care with ventilatory support and post-surgical recovery. Furthermore, for this, the instruments are used in the patient's hands and body. Chemicals such as chlorine derivatives, triclosan, chlorhexidine and, 70 % alcohol are currently used to decontaminate surfaces. This study evaluated ultraviolet C (UV-C) irradiation efficiency in the physiotherapy object's disinfection in daily use in the Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). the microbiological quantification carried out using the elastic band during physiotherapy in a cross-sectional study with 21 patients. The methodology compared the cleaning protocol (70 % alcohol) with a new irradiation method in elastic band in the ICU. The results showed microbial reductions in the elastic band using both 70 % alcohol and UV-C irradiation (254 nm), with 60 s of illumination, totaling a light dose of 0.78 J/cm2; however, the UV-C irradiation showed better results.
