Abstract

Abstract: A novel and straight forward method is adopted to segregate the contribution of primary and secondary sources of formaldehyde based on the rates of its formation and removal at different times in the urban atmosphere of Kolkata. To achieve the above objective, the diurnal and seasonal mixing ratios of formaldehyde were measured during dry season at two busy roadside locations. The maximal secondary formation fluxes of formaldehyde during summer and winter were found to be 6.63×107 and 1.23×107 moleculescm−3 s−1, respectively. Apart from formaldehyde (C1), several other carbonyls were quantified in this study. An overall good correlation between acetaldehyde (C2) and propanal (C3) indicates the contribution of vehicular emission to the carbonyl budget. The secondary formaldehyde contributions in summer and winter were about 71% and 32%, respectively. The relative mean contributions of C1, C2 and ozone towards generation of OH fluxes in summer were found to be 1.56×107, 6.96×105, and 1.29×107 moleculescm−3 s−1, respectively, which were 3.2, 3.4 and 1.6 times higher than those in winter. Abstract

Abstract: Ambient air quality at five busy petrol pumps in Kolkata, India is monitored for mono-aromatic hydrocarbons and carbonyls. Among the measured volatile organic compounds, toluene and formaldehyde were the most abundant. Source apportionment using chemical mass balance identified exhaust from roadway and refueling as the major sources. Monitoring of the service station workers revealed that the average exposure level for benzene and toluene were 3.9 and 5.5 fold higher than the ambient air. The integrated lifetime cancer risks due to benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde and the overall hazard index due to chronic exposure to some hazardous volatile organic compounds are 1.48E−04 and 2.3 indicating the probability of cancer as well as chronic health effect on the workers exposed. Abstract

Commuters'' exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) especially BTEX travelling in passenger cars in Kolkata, India were quantified in Phase I (2001–2002) and Phase II (2003–2004). Monitoring was made inside and in the immediate outside of passenger cars fitted with and without catalytic converters using different types of fuels, along two congested urban routes. During Phase I of the study, the benzene content in gasoline was 5% and the mean concentration of in-vehicle benzene in cars without catalytic converter was found to be as high as 721. 2 μg/m3. In Phase II when the benzene content was reduced to <3% and with modified engine type, the mean in-vehicle benzene concentration was reduced to 112. 4 μg/m3. The in-vehicle concentration varied with engine type and age of the vehicle. Roadside ambient mean concentration of benzene was 214. 8 μg/m3 and 30. 8 μg/m3 in Phase I and Phase II respectively. Abstract

The present study was designed to determine the role of central expression of immunoregulatory molecules in the development and maintenance of allodynia following a peripheral inflammatory insult or nerve transection. Differential spinal expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, platelet-endothelial cellular adhesion molecule (PECAM), intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) and CD4 was observed in the two injury models. Intraplantar zymosan produced transient allodynia and only PECAM and ICAM immunoreactivity. In contrast, persistent mechanical allodynia and enhanced spinal PECAM, ICAM, MHC class II and CD4 immunoreactivity was observed following peripheral nerve transection. MHC class II knockout mice exhibited attenuated allodynia following spinal nerve transection as compared to wild-type control mice. These findings suggest that central neuroimmune activation may contribute to the maintenance of neuropathic pain following peripheral L5 spinal nerve transection but not following a peripheral inflammatory insult.
