Summary Cutaneous and subcutaneous soft tissue tumours have been rarely described in detail in snakes. Several malignant entities show strikingly similar histological patterns and therefore the term soft tissue sarcoma (STS) has become a standard histopathological diagnosis. The present study characterizes soft tissue tumours in 33 snakes. Samples included 29 surgically excised masses and four carcasses. Additionally, six animals were humanely destroyed and submitted for necropsy examination following tumour recurrence. Benign neoplasms ( n = 8) were described as lipomas of varying differentiation. Recurrence was observed in two of five snakes in which the clinical course was recorded. Malignant neoplasms ( n = 25) were diagnosed as STS and graded according to a three-point system previously applied to canine STS. Five (20%) of the primary tumours were classified as grade 1, eleven (44%) as grade 2 and nine (36%) as grade 3 sarcomas. Clinically, recurrence of STS was observed in 11 of 17 cases with available follow-up information. Pathologically, multiple cutaneous metastases were found in one grass snake ( Natrix natrix ), while visceral metastases were observed in one carpet python ( Morelia spilota ) and two corn snakes ( Pantherophis guttatus ). Metastatic risk appears to increase with histological grade. Surgical excision generally represents the current therapy of choice for STS. This study includes the first reports of conventional lipomas in a ribbon snake ( Thamnophis radix ), angiolipomas in a black-headed python ( Aspidites melanocephalus ) and a corn snake as well as of STS in a Jamaican boa ( Epicrates subflavus ), emerald tree boa ( Corallus caninus ), grass snake ( N. natrix ), African house snake ( Lamprophis fuliginosus ), California kingsnake ( Lampropeltis getula californiae ) and common garter snake ( Thamnophis sirtalis ). Abstract: Parkinson’s disease is associated with emotional changes including depression, apathy, and anxiety. The current study investigated emotional processing in non-demented individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) using an electrophysiological measure, the centro-parietal late positive potential (LPP). Non-demented patients with Parkinson’s disease (n=17) and healthy control participants (n=16) viewed pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant pictures while EEG was recorded from a 64-channel geodesic net. The Parkinson patients did not differ from controls in terms of early electrophysiological components that index perceptual processing (occipital P100, N150, P250). Parkinson patients, however, showed reduced LPP amplitude specifically when viewing unpleasant, compared to pleasant, pictures as well as when compared to controls, consistent with previous studies suggesting a specific difference in aversive processing between PD patients and healthy controls. Importantly, LPP amplitude during unpleasant picture viewing was most attenuated for patients reporting high apathy. The data suggest that apathy in PD may be related to a deficit in defensive activation, and may be indexed cortically using event-related potentials. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Parkinson''s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects motor, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Previous studies reported reduced skin conductance responses in PD patients, compared to healthy older adults when viewing emotionally arousing pictures. Attenuated skin conductance changes in PD may reflect peripheral autonomic dysfunction (e.g., reduced nerve endings at the sweat gland) or, alternatively, a more central emotional deficit. The aim of the current study was to investigate a second measure of sympathetic arousal—change in pupil dilation. Eye movements, a motor-based correlate of emotional processing, were also assessed. Results indicated that pupil dilation was significantly greater when viewing emotional, compared to neutral pictures for both PD patients and controls. On the other hand, PD patients made fewer fixations with shorter scan paths, particularly when viewing pleasant pictures. These results suggest that PD patients show normal sympathetic arousal to affective stimuli (indexed by pupil diameter), but differences in motor correlates of emotion (eye movements). It is currently unknown whether the capacity of the liver to esterify and store vitamin A (VA) changes as a function of long-term VA intake or age. The objective of this study was to investigate whether age and/or VA status are factors for the hepatic expression of cellular retinol-binding protein (CRBP), the esterification of retinol by lecithin:retinol acyltransferase (LRAT) and the accumulation of VA and lipids in liver. Two factors, VA intake and age, were studied in a 3x3 design. Diets denoted as VA-marginal, control and supplemented contained 0.35, 4 and 25 mg retinol equivalents/kg diet, respectively; male Lewis rats were fed these diets from weaning until the ages of 2-3 mo (young), 8-10 mo (middle-aged) and 18-20 mo (old) (n = 6/group. Liver CRBP mRNA differed (two-way ANOVA) with dietary VA (P<0.0001) and age (P<0.05). Hepatic LRAT activity increased with dietary VA (P<0.0001). Age was not a factor (P = 0.47) although there was an interaction of age and dietary VA (P<0.0001). Hepatic LRAT activity was correlated (r = 0.633, P<0.0001) with plasma retinol at physiologic concentrations. In VA-supplemented rats of all ages, the plasma molar ratio of total retinol:retinol-binding protein (RBP) exceeded 1, and liver VA and total lipid concentrations were elevated. However, tests of liver function had previously been shown to be within normal values. Thus, the capacity of the liver for retinol esterification by LRAT was not diminished by age or the accumulation of VA and other lipids. We conclude the following: 1) hepatic LRAT activity is regulated across a broad, physiologic range of dietary VA; 2) LRAT activity is regulated throughout life; and 3) the capacity for hepatic VA storage is high throughout life. Objective: We evaluated the effects of coliform endotoxin on the circulating levels of atrial natriuretic factor and renal function. To understand the direct effects of endotoxin in the release of atrial natriuretic factor by cardiac tissue, studies in isolated rat atria were performed.Study Design: In vivo studies were used. Anesthetized dogs were studied, with one group receiving isotonic saline solution (n = 6) and the other group receiving 50 microg/kg of coliform endotoxin (n = 7) as a continuous infusion over a 4-hour period. Cardiovascular parameters, renal function, and circulating levels of atrial natriuretic factor were measured at specified time intervals. In another set of experiments with in vitro studies left atria from Sprague-Dawley rats were isolated and perfused. In the control group (n = 9) the standard Krebs perfusate was used. In the endotoxin group (n = 9) coliform endotoxin was added at a concentration of 250 microg/mL to the standard perfusate. Atrial pressure was used as an index of stretch, and atrial natriuretic factor was measured from the perfusate.Results: Administration of endotoxin resulted in decreased blood pressure (P < .05) with a concomitant increase in heart rate. Renal artery flow, however, showed an increase (P < .05) initially followed by a return to its baseline value, with a sustained increase occurring in the saline solution control group. A significant (P < .05) and sustained increase in the circulating levels of atrial natriuretic factor after endotoxin infusion did not prevent the decrease in fractional sodium excretion (P < .05) and creatinine clearance despite an increase in the urinary output. Serum sodium, serum potassium, and osmolalities, however, remained relatively stable. The study pertaining to isolated atria showed that in the presence of low atrial pressures, addition of endotoxin had no significant effect on the release of atrial natriuretic factor. With the increase in atrial pressure atrial natriuretic factor release was significantly higher in the group directly exposed to endotoxin compared with the control group.Conclusions: These studies demonstrate that the slow infusion of coliform endotoxin results in increased circulating levels of atrial natriuretic factor. This increase is in part due to the direct effect of endotoxin on the heart as indicated by studies in isolated atria. Our data suggest that atrial natriuretic factor in endotoxemia acts in an integrative manner with other hormones on a variety of target organs to modulate cardiovascular function and fluid balance. Making GPS more accurate and/or reliable by combining it with other sensors and applying sophisticated data processing techniques has been attempted many times. Our approach to enhancing the performance of GPS is much simpler than most. We combine multiple (up to eight) consumer-grade GPS receivers into a system that averages their data in real time, requiring no other sensors, augmentation technologies, or powerful processors. The results show significant improvement in both accuracy and reliability of the data over that of a single receiver, and the distribution of error more closely resembles the normal distribution (as compared to a single receiver). Our multi-GPS system shows potential to be an inexpensive way to achieve better GPS performance with only “off-the-shelf” equipment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kaliuretic peptide, a 20-amino acid peptide hormone synthesized in the heart, enhances urine flow twofold, whereas atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) enhances urine flow four- to 11-fold in healthy persons. The present investigation was designed to (1) determine whether kaliuretic peptide may have beneficial diuretic effects in persons with congestive heart failure (CHF), and (2) compare its beneficial effects with ANP in the treatment of CHF. Kaliuretic peptide (100 ng/kg body weight/min) given intravenously for 60 minutes to subjects with New York Heart Association class III CHF increased urine flow fourfold (p <0.001), which was maximal 212 hours after its infusion was stopped. Kaliuretic peptide enhanced sodium excretion threefold in subjects with CHF (p <0.01). Kaliuretic peptide increased the urinary excretion rate of potassium ion and fractional excretion of potassium 3.5- and twofold (p <0.05), respectively. ANP (same concentration) did not significantly enhance urine flow. ANP enhanced sodium excretion two- to sixfold in half of the CHF subjects, whereas it had no effect on sodium excretion in the other half. ANP did not significantly increase fractional excretion of sodium but did increase fractional excretion of potassium (p <0.05) during the first 20 minutes of its infusion. ANP-infused patients with CHF became hypotensive. None became hypotensive secondary to kaliuretic peptide. These data indicate that the diuretic properties of kaliuretic peptide in persons with CHF, as opposed to those of ANP, are not diminished (but rather are increased) compared with their effects in healthy persons. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are being used in a variety of applications due to their desirable energy storage characteristics required for modern electronic devices. However, LIBs are prone to thermal runaway due to the flammable liquid electrolyte, decomposition of solid electrolyte interphase from anode surfaces, and melting of polypropylene (PP) separators. The separator provides a pathway for Li+ transfer and divides electrodes from electrical contact, avoiding a short circuit, a potentially catastrophic event. A separator that can endure higher temperatures may restrict a cell from causing thermal runaway. This paper demonstrates that vermiculite, a mineral stable over 1000 °C, could act as a separator lining in LIBs with a lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) cathode and lithium anode. Though the standard PP separator shrinks or melts above 130 °C, the vermiculite and binder will continue to provide electronic isolation, allowing the battery to delay a thermal runaway scenario. The battery containing the vermiculite modified separator released 1.675 kJ g−1 less exothermic energy during the thermal runaway, as well as demonstrating a 3.38 °C higher separator melting temperature, indicating enhanced safety in examined LIBs. • Vermiculite is applied to separators to enhance thermal stability in LIBs. • Combined with binder and coated on polypropylene, assembled with LFP cathode. • Modified separator and PP show comparable electrochemical performance. • Calorimetric experiments demonstrate a 3.38 °C higher melting temperature than PP. • Modified separator shows 1.675 kJ g−1 less energy release during exotherm reaction.
