Of the 8000–10,000 snake envenomations evaluated in U.S. emergency departments (ED) annually, approximately 1% are due to non-native snakes. We describe a 26-year-old man who was bitten by his captive black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) as he was packing it up for transport to another snake collector. The patient presented to the ED 1 h after being bitten on the forearm, complaining of left arm pain, oral paresthesias, and dyspnea. His vital signs: heart rate 96 beats/min, blood pressure 167/101 mm Hg, temperature 36.7°C (97.9°F), respiratory rate 20 breaths/min, and room air oxygen saturation 100%. Two mildly tender puncture wounds without swelling or ecchymosis were found on the posterior aspect of the forearm. Over the ensuing 30 min his dyspnea worsened, and he developed objective weakness. He was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. He was treated with atropine 2 mg for bronchorrhea. Five vials of South African Vaccine Producers (Johannesburg, South Africa) polyvalent antivenom were administered 2.5 h post-bite and the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit. He was extubated 18 h post-envenomation and discharged the following day. He has remained asymptomatic since leaving the hospital. The primary manifestations of D. polylepis envenomings are neurological. Initial signs may include paresthesias, dysarthria, dysphagia, and ptosis. Progressive descending paralysis leading to respiratory failure develops within 60 min. Muscarinic features are frequently observed. Cardiotoxicity and hematologic laboratory abnormalities may be present. Although pain is common, significant local tissue injury does not occur. In addition to supportive care, several non-native antivenoms are indicated for D. polylepis envenomations. Black mamba envenomings differ from the native snakebites with which U.S. physicians are familiar. Rapid, progressive neurological toxicity and muscarinic features are most common. Herd gestation and health management are key aspects of effective dairy farm operations and animal welfare improvement. Unfortunately, very little is known about the developmental divergences induced by assisted reproduction technologies (ART) and their consequences once the animal is mature. Indeed, the gestational and health outcomes of this subset of the Holstein population is yet to be characterized. In this study, the intergenerational impacts of ART conception were assessed by looking at the gestation and health outcomes of a large cohort of cows (n = 284,813) for which the conception methods were known. Our results showed that cows conceived by multiple ovulation embryo transfer (MOET) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) displayed longer gestations: +0.37 ± 0.079 and +0.65 ± 0.21 day compared to cows conceived by artificial insemination (AI). Surprisingly, animals conceived by all methods experienced a similar 1-day decline in average gestation length from 2012 to 2019. Cows conceived by IVF were not more likely to experience stillbirths but were affected by common diseases such as ovarian cysts, mastitis, and uterine diseases in different proportions compared to cows conceived by other methods. Studies of dairy cow longevity usually focus on the animal life after first calving, with few studies considering early life conditions and their effects on longevity. The objective was to evaluate the effect of birth conditions routinely collected by Dairy Herd Improvement agencies on offspring longevity measured as length of life and length of productive life. Lactanet provided 712,890 records on offspring born in 5,425 Quebec dairy herds between January 1999 and November 2015 for length of life, and 506,066 records on offspring born in 5,089 Quebec dairy herds between January 1999 and December 2013 for length of productive life. Offspring birth conditions used in this study were calving ease (unassisted, pull, surgery, or malpresentation), calf size (small, medium, or large), and twinning (yes or no). Observations were considered censored if the culling reason was "exported," "sold for dairy production," or "rented out" as well as if the animals were not yet culled at the time of data extraction. If offspring were not yet culled when the data were extracted, the last test-day date was considered the censoring date. Conditional inference survival trees were used in this study to analyze the effect of offspring birth conditions on offspring longevity. The hazard ratio of culling between the groups of offspring identified by the survival trees was estimated using a Cox proportional hazard model with herd-year-season as a frailty term. Five offspring groups were identified with different length of life based on their birth condition. Offspring with the highest length of life [median = 3.61 year; median absolute deviation (MAD) = 1.86] were those classified as large or medium birth size and were also the result of an unassisted calving. Small offspring as a result of a twin birth had the lowest length of life (median = 2.20 year; MAD = 1.69) and were 1.52 times more likely to be culled early in life. Six groups were identified with different length of productive life. Offspring that resulted from an unassisted or surgery calving and classified as large or medium when they were born were in the group with the highest length of productive life (median = 2.03 year; MAD = 1.63). Offspring resulting from a malpresentation or pull in a twin birth were in the group with the lowest length of productive life (median = 1.15 year; MAD = 1.11) and were 1.70 times more likely to be culled early in life. In conclusion, birth conditions of calving ease, calf size, and twinning greatly affected offspring longevity, and such information could be used for early selection of replacement candidates. The aims of the present study were to provide a portrait of the techno-economic status of dairy herds in Minas Gerais, Brazil, particularly with respect to bulk-tank somatic cell count (BTSCC) data, and to examine the herd-level associations of BTSCC with various economic performance indicators (EPI). Data from 543 herds, 1,052 herd-year records in total, spread over 3 years (2015–2017), from the South and Southwest mesoregions of Minas Gerais State were provided by the Brazilian Support Agency to Micro and Small Companies Division Minas Gerais (SEBRAE). Herds had an average of 82 lactating cows per herd, milk yield of 17 L/cow per day, and availability of financial information via routine monthly economic surveys. The EPI data (revenue, gross margin, GM; net margin, NM; profit; break-even point; and operational profitability) of each herd was measured monthly by SEBRAE personnel, and herd-year averages of all variables were computed. Bulk-tank data (SCC, total bacterial count, content of crude protein and fat) taken by producers or dairy processors were recorded by SEBRAE personal; and corresponding herd-year averages were calculated and included in the SEBRAE database. There were 209 selected herds, which passed all edit checks, and which had data for all 3 years. The EPI (all expressed on a per-cow basis, $/cow per year) were analyzed, including the effects of region, year, log (ln) BTSCC, production level, and herd size, together with the random effect of herd nested within region. A high proportion of herds (94.6%) presented data records (herd-years) with an average BTSCC > 200 × 103 cells/mL: 37.8% of herd-year records had BTSCC between >200 and ≤400, 14.5% with BTSCC between >400 and ≤500, 25% with BTSCC between >500 and ≤750, and 17.3% with BTSCC >750. For each unit increase in ln BTSCC, revenue declined by $228.5/cow per year, GM by $155.6/cow per year, and profit by $138.6/cow per year. Herds with cows of lower production (<14 kg/d) presented lower GM ($286.8/cow per year) compared with herds containing cows producing ≥14 kg/d (≥14 and <19 kg/d = $446.5, and ≥19 kg/d = $601.9). The small-scale milk producers (<39 lactating cows) presented lower revenue ($1,914.9/cow per year) and GM ($274.5/cow per year) and consequently a negative profit (−$224.1/cow per year) compared with other herd size categories (≥39 lactating cows). The reduction in milk yield was 641 L/cow per lactation for each unit increase in ln BTSCC; this represented 9.4% of the milk yield per lactation, assuming an average milk production of 6,843.3 L/cow per lactation of cows from herds that had BTSCC ≤ 200 × 103 cells/mL. Consequently, we found a negative association of BTSCC with profit; profit declining from $227.0 to −53.1/cow per year when the BTSCC increased from 100 to 750 × 103 cell/mL. In short, the lower the BTSCC, the greater the revenue, GM and NM, profit, and operational profitability of the herds. The reduction of milk yield was the main factor associated with higher BTSCC. Sexual assault is consistently associated with social contexts that support high levels of alcohol consumption such as alcohol-serving establishments (i.e., bars). The significant rates of alcohol-involved sexual assault among college students demonstrate the critical need for evidence-based efforts to reduce alcohol-involved sexual assault in this population. Although bystander approaches have demonstrated some promise for reducing alcohol-involved sexual assault, to date no published studies have examined the effectiveness of implementing bystander prevention approaches with bar staff. Given the robust evidence indicating that bars serve as hot spots for sexual aggression, interventions that improve bar staff's ability to identify and intervene in sexually aggressive situations may offer a useful approach for reducing rates of alcohol-involved sexual assault. The Safer Bars study utilizes a cluster-randomized trial design that randomizes participants at the bar level into intervention and waitlist control arms. The sample includes bars (Nbars = 56) within a three-mile proximity to the three major public Arizona universities, with an average of 10 staff members per bar (Nstaff = 564). Assessments of individual-level and bar-level outcomes occur at baseline, training completion, and 3-months post-training, with an additional individual-level assessment at 6 months. Community-level effects are assessed using GIS data regarding police dispatches. Safer Bars represents a novel, theory-driven approach to promote effective bystander behavior among bar staff working in close proximity to university campuses to reduce rates of alcohol-involved sexual assault. To investigate young women's engagement in and receipt of condom use resistance (CUR; attempts to avoid condom use with a partner who wants to use one), including nonconsensual condom removal ("stealthing"), with male partners. Participants were 503 women aged 21–30 years with increased sexual risk characteristics recruited from 2013 to 2017. Participants completed measures assessing sexual victimization history and CUR experiences. Findings indicated that 87% of women experienced noncoercive CUR from a partner and 49% experienced coercive CUR. Of these women, 58% and 19% reported having engaged in noncoercive and coercive CUR, respectively. Twelve percent of women had a partner engage in stealthing; none of the women engaged in stealthing. The severity of sexual victimization history was positively associated with both use and receipt of coercive and noncoercive CUR. Diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections were positively associated with receipt of, but not engagement in, CUR. Findings demonstrate that sexual victimization and both the use and receipt of CUR are positively related for young women, suggesting that prevention efforts focusing on women's sexual health would benefit from joint consideration of sexual violence and risk behaviors and that such efforts should target victims of sexual violence. This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between plasma and milk concentrations of vitamin B12 as well as the relationship between plasma or milk concentrations of vitamin B12 and plasma concentration of free fatty acids (FFA) or blood concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) of early lactating Ayrshire (AY) and Holstein (HO) cows. A total of 44 dairy herds (7 AY and 37 HO herds) and 62 AY (21 in first, 19 in second, and 22 in third and more lactations) and 228 HO (51 in first, 74 in second, and 103 in third and more lactation) cows between 3 and 40 d in milk were involved in the study. Hand-stripped milk samples and blood samples were taken 6 h after the morning milking. Milk and plasma samples were analyzed for vitamin B12 concentration and plasma samples were analyzed for FFA concentration. A handheld device was used for blood BHB concentration determination. Thresholds for elevated plasma FFA concentration and hyperketonemia were set at ≥0.70 and ≥1.2 mmol/L, respectively. Vitamin B12 concentration in milk of AY primiparous cows [2,557 (1,995–3,276) pg/mL] was lower than in milk from HO primiparous cows [3,876 (3,356–4,478) pg/mL], whereas no difference was observed among other parities and breeds. Regardless of breeds, plasma concentration of vitamin B12 of first and second parities was lower than plasma concentration of third and more lactation cows. Milk vitamin B12 concentration was positively correlated with plasma vitamin B12 concentration, but the relationship was stronger for AY (ρ averaging 0.63) than for HO cows (ρ averaging 0.36). For AY and HO breeds, a significant relationship between milk or plasma vitamin B12 concentrations and plasma FFA concentration (ρ between 0.29 and 0.59) was observed. Moreover, cows with elevated plasma FFA concentration had greater milk and plasma vitamin B12 concentrations than cows with normal plasma FFA concentration. No relationship between vitamin B12 concentration in milk or plasma and blood BHB concentration and hyperketonemia was noted. In summary, milk is not well correlated with plasma vitamin B12 concentration for HO. It could be hypothesized that elevated plasma concentration of FFA could have a negative effect on the use of vitamin B12 by cow cells, which increases the concentration of the vitamin in plasma and its secretion in milk. According to the Confluence Model of Sexual Violence, men with a strong impersonal sex orientation (i.e., greater engagement in sexual activities with more casual sexual partners) are at increased risk of perpetrating sexual violence. Research from a variety of countries and samples has supported this proposition, finding that men who perpetrate sexual violence are also more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. The present article reviews this literature, synthesizing research findings from both psychology and public health domains utilizing both domestic and international samples. In particular, this review focuses on the associations between men's perpetration of sexual violence and their sexual partners, condom use, and sexually transmitted infection status, as well as provides recommendations for future research directions and prevention and intervention programming. The reduction of milk production caused by subclinical mastitis in dairy cows was evaluated through the regression of test-day milk yield on log-transformed somatic cell counts (LnSCC). Official test-day records (n = 1,688,054) of Holstein cows (n = 87,695) were obtained from 719 herds from January 2010 to December 2015. Editing was performed to ensure both reliability and consistency for the statistical analysis, and the final data set comprised 232,937 test-day records from 31,692 Holstein cows in 243 herds. A segmented regression was fitted to estimate the cutoff point in the LnSCC scale where milk yield started to be affected by mastitis. The statistical model used to explain daily milk yield included the effect of herd as a random effect and days in milk and LnSCC as fixed effects regressions, and analyses were performed by parity and stage of lactation. The cutoff point where milk yield starts to be affected by changes in LnSCC was estimated to be around 2.52 (the average of all estimates of approximately 12,400 cells/mL) for Holsteins cows from Brazilian herds. For first-lactation cows, milk losses per unit increase of LnSCC had estimates around 0.68 kg/d in the beginning of the lactation [5 to 19 d in milk (DIM)], 0.55 kg/d in mid-lactation (110 to 124 DIM), and 0.97 kg/d at the end of the lactation (289 to 304 DIM). For second-lactation cows, milk losses per unit increase of LnSCC had estimates around 1.47 kg/d in the beginning of the lactation (5 to 19 DIM), 1.09 kg/d in mid-lactation (110 to 124 DIM), and 2.45 kg/d at the end of the lactation (289 to 304 DIM). For third-lactation cows, milk losses per unit increase of LnSCC had estimates around 2.22 kg/d in the beginning of the lactation (5 to 19 DIM), 1.13 kg/d in mid-lactation (140 to 154 DIM), and 2.65 kg/d at the end of the lactation (289 to 304 DIM). Daily milk losses caused by increased LnSCC were dependent on parity and stage of lactation, and these factors should be considered when estimating losses associated with subclinical mastitis. The laboratory information systems of the Avian Health and Food Safety Laboratory (AHFSL) and the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) were analyzed to determine the disease frequency, by etiology, for backyard chicken submissions. Marek’s disease and Escherichia coli infection were by far the most common disease conditions diagnosed in both laboratories (17.7% and 17.4% at AHFSL versus 14.5% and 13.5% at CAHFS), followed by coccidiosis (AHFSL = 5.9%, CAHFS = 3.8%), ascaridiasis (AHFSL = 5.6%, CAHFS = 3.1%), and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (AHFSL = 3.2%, CAHFS = 3.6%). Neoplasia of the reproductive tract, ascites syndrome, and fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome were found at a higher rate at AHFSL (13.9%, 8%, and 5.1%, respectively) than at CAHFS (1.6%, 1%, and 1.8%, respectively). This difference might have been related to the flock purpose and age of birds submitted. The 2 notifiable diseases of poultry, Newcastle disease and avian influenza, are rare in backyard poultry and neither of these diseases was diagnosed during the investigated period. In Québec first calving occurs on average at 27 mo, whereas the target is 23 to 24.5 mo to maximize herd profitability. The aim of this study was to quantify current and future heifer growth using individual heifer random regressions and to generate indicators (such as heifer weight and height at 15 and 24 mo, average daily gain before and after 15 mo, age at which optimal weight for breeding is attained, i.e., 55% of mature weight, and reliability of the 15- and 24-mo weight predictions) that could be used as a practical on-farm tool. Dairy heifer weight estimated by heart girth circumference and height measured at the withers (from 0 to 27 mo) were obtained from the Valacta database (DHI agency, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC, Canada) from 1995 to 2012. Indicators were calculated based on the current situation of Holstein (HO), Ayrshire (AY), Jersey (JE), and Brown Swiss (BS) heifer growth in Québec. Heifers with less than 2 records were excluded from the analysis. Mature weights were determined by weight at calving of cows from third or greater lactation for a given breed and were 710 kg for HO, 625 kg for AY, 470 kg for JE, and 670 kg for BS. Estimated weights at 15 and 24 mo were 425 and 627, 334 and 482, 297 and 429, and 379 and 560 kg for HO, AY, JE, and BS, respectively, which are heavy enough for breeding and calving, except for AY. Relative reliabilities of the 15- and 24-mo weight predictions were on average 89 and 60%, respectively, based on measurements up to 15 mo. For HO, AY, JE, and BS, wither heights at 15 and 24 mo were 134 and 143, 125 and 134, 122 and 131, and 130 and 140 cm, respectively. Age at optimal breeding weight was 13.6, 15.5, 12.6, and 14.5 mo for HO, AY, JE, and BS, respectively. These data suggest that it is realistic to expect a first calving at 24 mo for HO, JE, and BS. A growth delay was observed for AY; average daily gain was 655 and 538 g/d before and after 15 mo, respectively. The average daily gain before and after 15 mo was 848 and 747 g/d for HO, 603 and 486 g/d for JE, and 775 and 662 g/d for BS, respectively. These indicators could be calculated for an individual heifer and on a herd-level basis and used on farm as a management tool for reducing age at first breeding and at first calving. The objective of the present study was to estimate heritabilities of milk fatty acids (FA) and genetic and phenotypic correlations among milk FA and milk production traits in Canadian Holsteins. One morning milk sample was collected from each of 3,185 dairy cows between February and June 2010 from 52 commercial herds enrolled in Valacta (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada). Individual FA percentages (g/100 g of total FA) were determined for each sample by gas chromatography. After editing the data, 2,573 cows from 46 herds remained. Genetic parameters were estimated using multitrait animal models fitted under REML. The model included fixed effects of age at calving and stage of lactation each nested within parity and random effects of herd-year-season of calving, animal, and residual. The pedigree of animals with data was traced back 5 generations on both the male and female sides to account for relationships among animals. The estimates of heritability for individual FA ranged from 0.01 to 0.39, with standard errors ranging from 0.01 to 0.06. Generally, monounsaturated FA (MUFA) and saturated FA (SFA) showed higher heritability estimates than polyunsaturated FA (PUFA). Overall, SFA were negatively genetically correlated with MUFA and PUFA, whereas genetic correlations between MUFA and PUFA were positive. The SFA showed positive associations with fat yield and fat percentage, whereas unsaturated FA were negatively associated with fat yield and fat percentage. Bovine milk FA composition could be improved through genetic selection, and selection for MUFA or against SFA could alter the bovine milk fat profile in a desirable direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
