This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the positive psychological intervention of recording three good things on alleviating nurses' burnout. Eighty-seven nurses with burnout were recruited. Nurses in the study group recorded three good things using communication tool WeChat for six months, no records were made in the control group. After intervention, the score of exhaustion decreased considerably for nurses in the study group. Nurses recording three good things on average twice a week returned the lowest score of exhaustion. This intervention combined with appropriate surveillance and encouragement is recommended to reduce nurses' burnout and create a positive work environment. • Nurses' burnout is still a problem to be solved. • Recording three good things twice a week alleviates nurses' burnout. • The medium of communication tool makes intervention convenient and generable. • Suggest managers set recording three good things as a regular activity for nurses. As the number of immigrants grows, the health of Chinese immigrant women, especially their perinatal health, has gradually attracted public attention. Our review has two main purposes. First, estimate the prevalence of postpartum depressive symptoms in Chinese immigrant women, and then determine risk factors for postpartum depressive symptoms among these women. The following databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO and PubMed were used in literature search from their commencements until November 21st 2017. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal instruments were used to evaluate the quality of the article. Four studies met the inclusion criteria, contributed to our review and meta-analysis. The prevalence of postpartum depression is high in Chinese immigrant women. Risk factors for postpartum depression in Chinese immigrant women were defined as lack of social support, unstable economic status, and acculturation. There have been few studies on postpartum depression among Chinese immigrant women. Existing studies have shown a high prevalence of postpartum depression in Chinese immigrant women. Moreover, there is an urgent need for studies on postpartum depression among Chinese immigrant women informing better understanding, programs of care and improving the perinatal health status of Chinese immigrant women. Being a nursing student can be a stressful experience, faced with considerable academic and clinical demands. It has been suggested that the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may have further exacerbated the pressure nursing students face. It has been posited that resilience, a complex psychological concept, may help nursing students overcome stressful situations. The aim of this scoping review was to examine the relationship between resilience and stress in nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Relevant publications were identified by a comprehensive search of the literature from January 2019 to September 2022 to capture relevant publications during the COVID-19 global pandemic period from the following databases: CINAHL, Medline Complete, APA PsycInfo, Ovid EmCare and Web of Science. Fifteen studies met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review using Arskey & O'Malley's (2005) methodological framework for scoping reviews. Our findings suggest that nursing students from all around the world have experienced high levels of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost unanimously, resilience was identified as a key protective factor against stress and the development of psychological morbidity. Those nursing students with higher levels of resilience were deemed more likely to stay on track with their studies, despite COVID-related challenges. In conclusion, this scoping review adds to the well-established argument to incorporate resilience-building activities in undergraduate nursing curricula. Introduction For individuals with a chronic condition, long-term management of their medication can be difficult and as a result non-adherence is common among this cohort. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the introduction of biologic agents was a revolutionary treatment but the high costs of this medication might limit their utilisation. Objective This systematic review aimed to determine whether out-of-pocket (OOP) costs affect adherence to RA medications in adults with a diagnosis of RA. Methods Twelve databases were searched to identify primary peer-reviewed articles, written in English from inception to April 2016 that referred to the relationship between adherence to RA medication and OOP costs. The CASP check list was used to assess the quality rating of the included studies. Results Six articles were identified in the review and all were considered as high quality studies. Among them, three directly considered the association between OOP costs and medication adherence as their main objective. Although the population and the methods of the studies varied widely, there was an inverse relationship between OOP costs and medication adherence in patients with RA. Conclusion The findings of this review suggest that OOP costs can contribute to non-adherence to RA medication in patients with RA. Therefore, health policy makers globally should identify the appropriate OOP amount so these costs do not affect adherence whilst simultaneously ensuring that costs are not an intolerable burden for governments, providers and insurers. Setting: The study setting is a tertiary referral hospital of over 980 beds, in Victoria, Australia. The hospital is a long established major academic public health service providing healthcare, health professional education and health research. The hospital has 103,756 in-patient admissions, 190,756 outpatient attendances and over 82,000 presentations to the Emergency Department annually.Participants: 22 clinicians completed an in-depth, audio-recorded interview: 12 medical and 10 nursing staff, with a variety of clinical experience.Intervention(s): Each audio recorded interview was transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis. The semi structured questions were designed to explore the clinician's understanding of deaths that meet the criteria to be reported to Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV), and why such reporting was required. There was also the opportunity to identify any barriers or enablers to the reporting process, whether internal or external to the organisation.Results: Two main themes emerged from the interviews: 1. lack of awareness of which deaths are reportable to the coroner and 2. the need for educational support. Several subthemes were also identified such as accountability, the need for feedback and blame.Discussion: The understanding of clinicians as to which deaths meet the reportable criteria in healthcare is quite variable and this indicates that there might be a level of under reporting. Apart from the potential of not meeting legal obligations, there may also be the loss of a valuable opportunity for lessons to inform clinical practice and enhance the delivery of safe patient care. Abstract: Background: According to the psychoanalytical literature, it is during pregnancy that maternal representations of the mother–infant relationship become activated. Midwives who are engaged with the mother and the baby have not drawn upon this concept in their practice. In order for this to happen, it is important to understand better the nature of maternal representations and when they are activated from empirical studies. Question: The research question is: what are the maternal representations of a group of first time mothers from pre-pregnancy, early pregnancy and to the first ultrasound. Method: A narrative approach was used to gain insight into the maternal representations of first time pregnant womens’ account of their representations. The analysis method was based on thematic approach. Participants: Fifteen women aged between 23 and 38 years. Setting: A midwives clinic attached to a tertiary hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Findings: First-time pregnant women's maternal representations were activated when a woman begins to plan her pregnancy (‘the time is right’), again at the onset of physical changes to her body as a result of conception (‘my body is changing’), and at the first early ultrasound at around twelve weeks (‘it’ is a real baby). Conclusion: Maternal representations are important for the midwife and pregnant women because this concept provides another understanding in relation to the psychological dimension of pregnancy. Summary: Background: The current study was designed to evaluate a screening process for alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems with clients presenting with mental health (MH) issues at an emergency department (ED) at an urban hospital. Method: In total, 145 ED clients were referred for MH issues. Of these, 53 were screened for AOD problems using an initial screen of two questions. Those identified as being at-risk on the initial screen were given a more detailed AOD screen. Fifty-three percent were found to be over the risk threshold indicating substance abuse or dependence problems. The response of nine clinicians and managers to the screening process was also evaluated. Results: The results demonstrate the clinical utility of a two item, followed by a further eight item screen to detect AOD problems. There was also a high level of acceptance among managers of this screening process. Discussion: The implication of these findings for the management of clients with MH problems and comorbid AOD problems are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The evidence suggests that heavy workloads, pressure to publish, lack of recognition and job insecurity has led to increased job stress among nurse academics. Lack of proper mentoring, reorientation and transition into an academic role are contributory factors towards the lack of retention and recruitment among nurse academics. Internationally, the sustainability of the nurse academic workforce is an area of great concern. The experiences of nurse academics have not been extensively investigated. To explore the work experiences of nurse academics. Qualitative Exploratory study. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. A purposive sample of nurse academics (n = 19), recruited from all states and territories of Australia, lecturer to professor level and work experiences from 2 to 30 years. Data were collected using semi-structured face to face and telephone interviews. Data were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed based upon Braun & Clark's model. The study is reported in accordance with the COREQ guidelines. Ethical approval was granted by the relevant University Human Research Ethics Committee. Four main themes were identified (a) Helping students achieve, finding satisfaction through student engagement, (b) working with challenging students, (c) increased workloads, lack of support and resources and (d) difficulty with retention of newly appointed staff. Although the findings highlighted the interactions with nursing students were a positive experience, many of the participants raised great concern about the challenging, difficult, academically weak, rude, and manipulative students. The growing workload increased non-academic administrative work, and the inability to sustain newly appointed staff were areas of great concern. Abstract: This literature review summarises the history of patient safety initiatives in health-care systems around the world. The need to improve patient safety is commonly called for following interrogation of data captured as a measure of patient safety including audit, clinical indicator reporting and evaluation methods. Many such reports exist for maternity services. Recommendations for improvement identified after review may be taken up, but there is little in the literature that demonstrates how clinicians consider such recommendations, implement improvement strategies and assess their impact. Across the world, hospital nurses experience a high level of burnout. Exploring biochemical markers of burnout could help to understand physiological changes and may provide useful evidence for preventing burnout symptoms. The current study included 94 female nurses from one Chinese third-level hospital. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) was used to investigate burnout symptoms: emotional exhaustion, cynicism, reduced professional efficacy, as well as the burnout average. The HPT axis was tested by checking blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxin (T 4 ) and triiodothyronine (T 3 ). Nonparametric tests showed that no significant difference in biochemical markers was found between the burnout and non-burnout groups. Spearman correlation analysis found that biochemical markers had no significant association with burnout symptoms, except weakly negative associations between reduced professional efficacy and blood pressure and heart rate. These findings show a rather poor correlation of the HPT axis on burnout symptoms. Expanding the biochemical index of the HPT axis, comparing well-defined samples and using longitudinal studies are recommended for further studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
