Beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) are sentinel species for Arctic environmental change; however, whether belugas are resilient to anticipated changes in prey dynamics remains uncertain, partly due to a lack of dietary information. Mixing models are promising tools to evaluate the diets of marine mammals, using dietary tracers such as fatty acid signatures. Additionally, captive feeding trials are useful to test the effectiveness of these tools for application to wild populations. In our study, we compared the ability of two models, quantitative fatty acid signature analysis in R (QFASAR) and Fatty Acid Source Tracking Algorithm in R (FASTAR) to reconstruct the diets of captive beluga whales that had been fed a long-term diet consisting mostly of Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi), and in smaller proportions, capelin (Mallotus villosus) and squid (Doryteuthis opalescens). To account for fatty acid metabolism, we compared a suite of calibration coefficients derived from captive feeding trials of American mink (Mustela vison), harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus), harbour seal (Phoca vitulina richardsi), and grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) fed monotypic diets. For both methods, diets estimated using calibration coefficients derived from feeding trials of mink fed herring and/or seal oil were able to correctly identify herring as the dominant prey source of belugas. In addition, there was higher precision among diet estimates using these calibration coefficients in comparison to those generated using calibration coefficients derived from feeding trials of pinnipeds or mink fed poultry. QFASAR more accurately approximated the diet proportions of the whales than FASTAR, possibly because of the greater robustness to errors in the calibration coefficients. Based on QFASAR, diet estimates best reflect the whales' true dietary proportions consumed approximately two weeks to one month prior to sampling, similar to timeframes seen in previous studies of harbour seals. We recommend caution when using these models with prey that have high within-species variability in fatty acid signatures or small sample sizes, as well as prey with similar fatty acid signatures. Managing Arctic marine resources to be resilient to environmental changes requires knowledge of how climate change is affecting marine food webs and fisheries. Changes to fishery resources will have major implications for coastal Indigenous communities whose livelihoods, health, and cultures are strongly connected to fisheries. Understanding these broad social-ecological changes requires a transdisciplinary approach bringing together contrasting and complementary disciplines and ways of knowing. Here, we examine climatic proxies, ecological, and fishery indicators (stable isotopes, fish condition, and lipid content), and interviews with Inuit fishers to assess how marine ecosystem changes have influenced Arctic Char (Salvelinus alpinus) ecology and fisheries over a 30-year time period (1987–2016) in the Kitikmeot region of the Canadian Arctic. Inuit fishers reported several observations of environmental changes, including longer ice-free seasons, warmer ocean temperatures, and the arrival of new marine species. Biophysical data revealed important changes toward earlier dates of ice breakup (>12 days in some areas) and a shift in isotopic niche reflecting a changing Arctic Char diet, with increased contribution of pelagic carbon and higher trophic level prey. Fish condition was improved in years with earlier ice breakup, as observed by both Inuit fishers and biophysical indicators, while lipid content increased through time, suggesting that longer ice-free seasons may have a positive effect on Arctic Char quality as reflected by both fish condition and lipid content. Long-term impacts of continuing climate change, however, such as the northward expansion of boreal species and increasing ocean temperatures, could have negative effects on fisheries (e.g., physiological impairment in fish if temperatures exceed their thermal range). Continuous community-based monitoring that directly informs fisheries management could help communities and managers adaptively, and sustainably, manage in the face of multiple interacting changes in Arctic marine systems. At Cape Vera, Devon Island (Nunavut, Canada), a colony of northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) concentrates and releases contaminants through their guano to the environment. We determined whether persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from seabirds were transferred to coastal food webs. Snow buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) were the most contaminated species, with ∑PCB and ∑DDT (mean: 168, 106 ng/g ww) concentrations surpassing environmental guidelines for protecting wildlife. When examined collectively, PCB congeners and DDT in jewel lichen (Xanthoria elegans) were lower in samples taken farther from the seabird colony, and increased with increasing δ15N values. However, only concentrations of p’p-DDE:∑DDT and PCB-95 were significantly correlated inversely with distance from the seabird cliffs. Linkages between marine-derived POPs and their concentrations in terrestrial mammals were less clear. Our study provides novel contaminant data for these species and supports biovector transport as a source of organic contaminants to certain components of the terrestrial food web. Abstract: At Cape Vera (Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada), a seabird colony of northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) congregates and releases nutrients through the deposition of guano to the coastal terrestrial environment, thus creating nutrient-fertilized habitats important to insects, birds, and mammals. Here we determined whether mercury was similarly enriched in various terrestrial food web components in this High Arctic coastal ecosystem due to seabird inputs. Stable isotopes (δ 15N, δ 13C) were used to identify trophic linkages and possible routes of contaminant transfer in the food web. Values of δ 15N were significantly higher in lichens and certain plants collected closer to the bird colony, demonstrating a gradient of seabird influence, and were higher at Cape Vera than our reference site at Cape Herschel, on eastern Ellesmere Island, an area relatively unaffected by seabirds. In contrast, δ 13C showed little variation among terrestrial species, suggesting minimal influence by seabirds. Concentrations of total mercury (THg) in primary producers and phyto/zooplankton were not significantly correlated with distance from the seabird colony or δ 15N values, and were similar to other taxa from the High Arctic. Our results provide novel data on THg in several Arctic taxa where concentrations have not been reported previously. Moreover, the analyses indicate that δ 15N is significantly enriched in the adjacent environment by guano fertilization, but our study was unable to show an enrichment of THg and δ 13C in the terrestrial food web near the seabird colony.
