• A meshed Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) array for optical logic operations was proposed. • Seven basic logic operations are well implemented by an interferometer array with three MZIs. • Half-adder and 4-bit odd–even discriminator are also achieved by cascading basic components and increasing the size of the interferometer array. Optical logic operations play a significant role in digital optical computing and signal processing. Conventional logic operations always rely on nonlinear light-matter interactions, where high energy consumption, restricted logical function, and poor cascadability seriously hamper their practical application. In this study, we introduce a meshed Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) array to provide a complex linear-modulation solution for optical logic operations. The optical interference unit (OIU) is formed by a meshed MZI array, and the unitary matrix–vector product operations are imitated. The introduction of a linear vector composition makes it possible to optimize the phase-shift parameters of the OIU using a gradient descent algorithm for non-unitary logic operations. In the simulation, we demonstrate that seven basic logic operations are well implemented by an OIU with three MZIs. Complex logic operations and multi-input logic operations are also achieved by cascading basic components and increasing the size of the OIU. These linear-optical logic operations are implemented on the same platform using phase-only modulation, which has low power consumption and is critical for device fabrication and system integration. • A robust neural network approach is experimentally investigated for identification of conjugate orbital angular momentum modes. • The constructed model has higher robustness against turbulence and lower model computational complexity. • The proposed approach can effectively assist in demodulating conventional amplitude- and phase-modulation signals. Orbital angular momentum shift-keying (OAM-SK), which enables modulation of digital signals by rapidly switching OAM modes, is promising in improving the modulation ability and confidentiality. Robust identification of conjugate OAM modes of VBs perturbed by atmospheric turbulence is critical for efficient demodulation of OAM-SK signals. We experimentally investigate a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach to detect OAM modes from diffraction patterns of turbulence-induced vortex beams. By introducing the hybrid-turbulence with variable turbulence strengths, this approach possessed high robustness against turbulence and low computational complexity in conjugate OAM mode identification, achieved 99.53 % mode detection accuracy in the −8 to 8 range for the hybrid-turbulence of C n 2 = 10 - 14 ∼ 10 - 12 m - 2 / 3 . Mapping and encoding a grayscale image to the OAM modes, an OAM-SK communication link was built and the demodulated bit-error-rate (BER) was only 6.85 × 10−3. We show that this approach also can effectively assist in demodulating the conventional modulation signals, promoting the communication transmission capacity. By combining OAM-SK with on–off keying (OOK) and quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK) to construct joint-modulation links, and OOK (QPSK) signals were successfully demodulated with the BER of 8.2 × 10−9–9.1 × 10−3 (3.34 × 10−6–2.8 × 10−3) with the assistance of CNN. Our results indicate that the proposed robust CNN is not only effective for demodulating OAM-SK signals, but is also compatible with conventional modulation signals, which is very promising for OAM-SK communication applications that require OAM mode identification. Hollow tubing polystyrene (PS) fibers (HFs) with porous shell were successfully fabricated through co-axial electrospinning and selectively dissolving and removing polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) core of the co-axial PS/PVP fibers using C 2 H 5 OH at room temperature. The size of co-axial hollow tubing structure (CHTS) and the thickness of shell can be controlled by varying the feed rate ratio of the core solution to the shell solution. The oil-sorption results show that the oil-sorption capacity increases with the increasing of the size of CHTS in the HFs, and the HFs have higher oil-sorption capacities than the porous PS fibers (PFs) without CHTS. It is noticeable that the diesel sorption capacity (66 g/g) of the HFs is approximately 1.74 times as much as that (38 g/g) of the PFs. The motor oil sorption capacity (147 g/g) of the HFs is approximately 1.55 times as much as that (95 g/g) of the PFs. It is suggested that the HFs have a better oil-sorption performance than the PFs, especially for the low viscosity oil, which is contributed to large CHTS and high porosity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The northern segment of the Truong Son belt of northwestern Vietnam is composed of three granitoid complexes (Chieng Khuong, Dien Bien, and Song Ma, respectively). Our new LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating results of magmatic zircons from five granitoid samples in the Dien Bien and the Chieng Khuong complexes reveal the existence of three age populations of magma emplacement and crystallization from 276 to 202Ma. The new data show that the quartz diorite of the Chieng Khuong complex is dated to be 271Ma. However, the previously named Dien Bien complex, exposed at different localities, has various ages (from 281 to 202Ma) of magmatic crystallization. The Chieng Khuong quartz diorite exhibits high Mg-value (60.7) and enriched Sr–Nd isotopic features (ISr =0.713822, εNd (t)=−11.34), with subduction-related geochemical features (e.g., depletion in Nb, Ta and Ti and enrichment in Rb and La). The Dien Bien gabbroic diorite at Muong Lay is characterized by relatively depleted isotopic data (ISr =0.705050, εNd (t)=+0.09) and extensive depletion in Nb and Ta. By contrast, the Dien Bien granodiorite and quartz monzonite at Dien Bien are high-K calc-alkaline to calc-alkaline, with high Mg-values (45.5 to 54.4), and they display enriched Sr–Nd isotopic data (ISr =0.714912 to 0.716430, εNd (t)=−9.58 to −8.85) and post-collisional geochemical characteristics (e.g., enrichment in total alkali, LILE and LREE and depletion in Eu, Sr, P, Ti and Nb). Under the framework of regional tectonic evolution, the Permo-Triassic magmatism along the northern Truong Son belt is thus grouped into an early stage from ca. 280 to 250Ma and a late stage from 229 to 202Ma. The early Permian-early Triassic arc magmatism (280–270Ma and 250–245Ma), which is widely distributed in the Truong Son belt, provides reliable information on the continuous subduction of the Song Ma oceanic plate beneath the Indochina block. Furthermore, the magmatism of the Dien Bien complex at Dien Bien was formed during post-collisional extension at ca. 229 to 202Ma. Diachronous suturing of the eastern Tethyan evolution is characterized by the differences in the ages of subduction/post-collisional evolution along the Ailaoshan and the Song Ma belts. Abstract: Monodispersed CdS nanoballs were synthesized through γ-irradiating CdCl2, Na2S2O3 and polyvinylpyrrolidone aqueous solution at room temperature. With these well monodispersed CdS nanoballs, CdS@SiO2 core–shell structures were prepared under hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate without adding a coupling agent. Field emission scanning electron micrograph, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the products. It is hoped that the core–shell CdS@SiO2 nanoballs would be used as good luminescence detecting material for biological systems, so this may stimulate technological interest and prospect many other applications in materials related fields. Abstract: Fe3O4 nanowires were successfully synthesized from ferrous chloride (FeCl2·4H2O) and diamine hydrate (H4N2·H2O) via the surfactant-assisted redox hydrothermal process induced by low magnetic field. The products as-prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction, TEM and HRTEM. The complex oxide Ba–Fe–O catalysts were prepared by sol–gel method. The XRD, DTA, NO-TPD, XPS and NSC measurements were used to characterize the structures, NOx storage property and sulfur resistance ability. It is concluded that when coadsorption of NO and O2 at 400 °C, the sample calcined at 750 °C possesses high NOx storage capacity and sulfur resistance. The perovskite type BaFeO3 and BaFeO3−x phases are the active centers in the catalyst for NOx storage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Monodispersed and uniform single-crystal compass-shaped (80 nm in middle width and 200 nm in length) Mn3O4 (hausmannite) have been successfully prepared in a surfactant solution system by a simple reduction–oxidation method at room temperature and under ambient pressure. The reactions contain two steps: first, Mn2+ is reduced into Mn atoms by γ-ray irradiation; then, Mn atoms are oxidized into Mn3O4 in air. The possible growth mechanism has also been proposed. Multi-dimensional multiplexing plays a vital role in on-chip optical communication for enhancing capacity density. However, the mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode interferometer is generally wavelength dependent, which brings a non-negligible conundrum to fabricate multi-dimensional (de)multiplexers. Herein, we propose an on-chip multi-dimensional (de)multiplexer by designing a tapered adiabatic micro-ring resonator (TAMR), and perform a 4-mode bending transmission via a pixelated meta-structure. The TAMR is designed with a negligible wavelength dependence because of non-coherent superposition (No-coherent superposition mechanism based on directional coupling avoids the coherent superposition of light-waves, which will not reduce the working bandwidth.of device.), but employs the periodic energy exchange of evanescent wave between two waveguides to achieve an equal phase velocity for the fundamental and higher-order modes (mode conversion), where a micro-ring resonator array is exploited for resonance frequency selection. A pixelated meta-structure implemented by writing nano airholes in the silicon slab is employed for addressing the mode distortion induced by the bending of transverse electric (TE) modes. Consequently, we construct a 12-channel multi-dimensional (de)multiplexer composed of 3 wavelengths and 4 TE modes. We show that all the channels are successfully (de)multiplexed with crosstalk less than − 19 dB, and bit error rates lower than 3.8 × 10−3 at the signal to noise ratio of 17 dB. Porous amorphous carbons with large number of defects and dangling bonds indicate great potential application in energy storage due to high specific surface area and strong adsorption properties, but poor conductivity and pore connection limit their practical application. Here few-layer graphene framework with high electrical conductivity is embedded and meanwhile hierarchical porous structure is constructed in amorphous hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) by catalysis of Fe clusters of angstrom scale, which are loaded in the interior of crosslinked polystyrene via a novel method. These unique HCSs effectively integrate the inherent properties from two-dimensional sp 2 -hybridized carbon, porous amorphous carbon, hierarchical pore structure and thin shell, leading to high specific capacitance up to 561 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 as an electrode of supercapacitor with excellent recyclability, which is much higher than those of other reported porous carbon materials up to present. Electromagnetic wave absorbers with very long absorption spectra have become an important target for optoelectronic materials and technology. In this paper, we propose a titan-based resonator to achieve near-perfect wide spectrum absorption of solar radiation. In the whole spectrum of the study, the average absorption of the absorber is up to 93.17%. Using surface plasmon resonance, up to 1759 nm in the range of absorption over 90% in the absorption spectrum studied (166.8–1926.6 nm). Furthermore, the absorption spectrum of the absorber is not sensitive to polarization. Since the material constituting the absorber is a mainly refractory metal, it can work under a complex electromagnetic environment (solar radiation) and high-temperature conditions. Later, the influence of various parameters on the absorption spectrum and the mechanism of forming broadband absorption was explored. It is also found that other refractory metals similar to titanium have a good effect on the absorber with this structure. We report a numerical study of an ideal solar broadband absorber based on refractory titanium. By optimizing the design, the average solar absorption efficiency of the absorber in the studied wavelength range (100–2000 nm) is as high as 93.17%. Sodium-ion battery as an attractive energy storage system is acknowledged as alternative to lithium-ion battery on account of their extensive resources and low price. NaTi 2 (PO 4) 3 is considered as an excellent electrode material in sodium-ion battery due to open three-dimensional crystal channels for ion diffusion. In this work, reasonable crystal design of Zr doping and surface modification of carbon coating strategy was employed to promote the sodium storage performances of NaTi 2 (PO 4) 3 electrode. A series of NaTi 2-x Zr x (PO 4) 3 /C (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) composites with core@shell structure were synthesized through an easy sol-gel route, and were applied as electrode for sodium ion battery. The result shows that the crystal type of all samples is relatively pure. However, the dispersion of Zr doped samples are significantly improved compared to the blank sample. Among all the samples, NTP-Zr-0.1 (NaTi 1.9 Zr 0.1 (PO 4) 3 /C) demonstrates the best charge/discharge performances. It delivers the discharge capacities of 206.3 mA h g-1 at 40 mA g-1 and 79.2 mA h g-1 at 2000 mA g-1, while those of NTP are 116.2 and 26.9 mA h g-1, severally. Superior electrochemical performance of NTP-Zr-0.1 is probably ascribed to the carbon coating structure, good dispersion, and lattice volume increase, further accelerating the transfer of electron and sodium ion. This study implies that carbon coating and Zr doping are facile and efficient strategy for promoting performances of NaTi 2 (PO 4) 3 /C composite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• N-doped graphitized carbon-coated Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in highly graphitized carbon hollow fibers (GF-FeO@NGC) were prepared. • Interior highly graphitized hollow carbon fibers provided an electrical highway and a mechanical backbone for Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. • The relatively low graphitization and N heteroatom endowed NGC coating with defect channels for Li+ transport. • The covalent bonding between Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and graphitized carbon stabilized GF-FeO@NGC structure. • The GF-FeO@NGC showed more excellent rate capability and cycling durability than the reported Fe 2 O 3 /C composites. Ferric oxide (Fe 2 O 3) has become one of the most competitive candidates for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries anode materials due to its high theoretical reversible specific capacity (Cs, 1007 mAh g−1) and low price. However, the rapid capacity fading and poor rate performance deriving from drastic volume expansion (∼200 %), low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and poor electrical conductivity limit its application in LIBs. Herein, a novel encapsulation structure of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles has been developed. Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles inlaid in the shells of hollow highly graphitized carbon fibers are coated by N-doped graphitized carbon (GF-FeO@NGC) by a catalytic graphitization, oxidation route of Fe-based catalyst. The GF-FeO@NGC electrode shows the first specific discharge/charge capacities of 1355/974 mAh g−1 with high initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 72.0%, and excellent reversibility of lithiation/delithiation reaction. After 200 cycles at 0.1 A g−1, the GF-FeO@NGC electrode keeps a high reversible Cs of 918 mAh g−1 (retention of 94.3%) with a CE of 99.6%. It is noticeable that the GF-FeO@NGC electrode has good rate performance and robust cycling stability at high current density. After 300 cycles at 2 A g−1, the Cs retention is up to 97.1% with a CE of 99.7%. These are far superior to those of the GF-FeO (without NGC coating) and the most reported Fe 2 O 3 -based electrode materials. The mechanism behind these phenomena are studied. • The vibration compaction process alleviated the strength reduction caused by rubber. • Rubber could improve the deformation, shrinkage resistance, and fatigue performance of CSA. • The reliability of RCSA performance was verified by field project demonstration. The waste tires were utilized for cement-stabilized aggregate (CSA), which could alleviate the environmental problems caused by waste tires and improve the durability of CSA. In this study, rubber particles with sizes ranging between 2.36 ∼ 4.75 mm were added to the CSA and replaced natural aggregate. The rubberized cement-stabilized aggregate (RCSA) was designed in the laboratory and verified in the field test road. The CSA and RCSA specimens were prepared by static pressure compaction and vertical vibration compaction in the laboratory and from field cores. The unconfined compressive strength test, indirect tensile strength test, fatigue test, dry shrinkage test, and temperature shrinkage test were adopted to evaluate the performance of RCSA. The results showed that the addition of rubber reduced the compressive and indirect tensile strength of CSA. However, the vibration compaction method could significantly alleviate the negative impact of rubber on strength reduction. The rubber particles could improve the deformation capacity and fatigue performance of CSA, and the maximum increase in ultimate failure strain was 21.5%. The dry shrinkage strain and dry shrinkage coefficient of CSA were reduced by 12.0% and 18.4%, respectively. The temperature shrinkage strain and temperature shrinkage coefficient decreased by 29.2% and 28.4% after adding rubber particles, respectively. • The strength and fatigue properties of PMBA mixture were investigated. • The Desai strength yield surface was studied for the PMBA mixture. • The normalized fatigue equation for the PMBA mixture was established. Polyphosphoric acid modified high dosage bio-asphalt (PMBA) could provide a new direction for saving asphalt resources. The fatigue performance of asphalt mixture is one of the critical factors that should pay more attention in achieving a life cycle cost-effective. This study aims to investigate the strength and fatigue performances of the PMBA mixture. The stress states of mixture tests include indirect tension, direct tension, and unconfined compressive, respectively. The S-N fatigue equations, Desai yield surface, and normalized fatigue equation were determined. At the same loading rate, the strength values of indirect tension and direct tension are close, while the strength of unconfined compressive is much larger than theirs. The S-N fatigue equations parameter obtained based on stress levels vary significantly under different stress states, with unconfined compressive being much more significant than indirect tension and direct tension. The Desai strength yield surface gradually expands outward with the increase of loading velocities. The diffusion rate decreases as the loading velocities increase. According to the Desai yield surface, the new fatigue stress path and stress ratio were defined. The normalized fatigue equation for PMBA mixture under various stress states is N f = Δ - 4.58 R 2 = 0.99. The normalized n value of PMBA asphalt mixtures is 4.58, 2.7% lower than that of SBS modified asphalt mixtures. This study is meaningful for applying high dosage bio-asphalt. Uniform discrete cage-like nitrogen-doped hollow porous carbon spheres (CN-HPCS) with tunable direct large mesoporous (18–30 nm) have been successfully synthesized for the first time by using the carboxylated polystyrene spheres and silica particles as a dual-template and dopamine as the carbon and nitrogen sources. When they are used as the electrode for supercapacitors, these CN-HPCS exhibit a high specific capacitance of 257 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 194 F g −1 at 10 A g −1 with excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The heterostructure consisting of ultrathin microporous carbon and graphene can exhibit many interesting properties benefiting from their unique physicochemical structure, and thus possess a great potential application in electrochemical energy storage devices. Herein, we report a novel catalysis strategy to construct nanometer-thick microporous carbon/few-layer graphene (FLG) heterostructure in the tens-of-nanometer-thick shells of hollow carbon spheres (HCSs). The thickness of microporous carbon in heterostructure can be reduced by intercalating more FLG sheets. Nano-sized thickness increases exposure ratio of micropores and shortens ion transport distance besides good conductivity of FLG sheets. The meso- and macropores in heterostructure further improves ion adsorption of high-density open micropores. The obtained ultrathin microporous carbon/FLG heterostructure shows high special capacitance (Cs) of 187 F·g−1 at 5.0 mV·s−1 and excellent rate capability. Furthermore, the loading of heterostructure electrode increases by 15 times, the Cs is up to 192 F·g−1 at 5.0 mV·s−1 with more excellent rate performance and robust long-term charge-discharge recyclability. After the loading mass increased by 29 times (2.85 mg·cm−2), the electrochemical performance still remains stable, indicating a great potential for supercapacitor application. Abstract: Single-crystalline micrometer-sized Cu2O cubes with concave planes were synthesized via γ-irradiation reducing reaction under ambient conditions without any surfactant. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) investigation reveals that these cubes are single crystals. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to investigate the nucleation and crystal growth process of Cu2O cubes. The UV–vis absorption spectrum is used to estimate the band gap energies of the Cu2O cubes. The band gap of the products calculated from the UV–vis spectrum corresponds to 2.53eV, which is larger than the direct band gap (2.17eV) of the bulk Cu2O. Another value of 1.97eV hints excitonic discrete energy level in forbidden band, arising from the crystal defects of as-prepared Cu2O single crystal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Uniform porous carbon nanofibers with an average diameter of 90nm were fabricated by forming polyphosphazene nanofibers and carbonizing them, without the need for any activation step. The structure and morphology of the carbon nanofibers were characterized by SEM, TEM, EDX, XRD, Raman spectrum and N2 adsorption. Results showed that the carbon nanofibers have a BET surface area of about 540m2 g−1, a total pore volume of about 0.37m3 g−1, and a narrow pore size distribution in the micropore range. Herein, we proposed a facile strategy for preparing well-distributed Sb-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles on carbon paper (CP) via electrodeposition and in-situ oxidation as bifunctional electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries. SnO 2 and Sb-doped SnO 2 modified carbon paper (CP-SnO 2 and CP-SnO 2 /Sb) was respectively obtained by electrodepositing metals (Sn and Sn/Sb) nanoparticles, followed by a conversion to metal oxides with in-situ oxidation. CP-SnO 2 exhibited better electrochemical performance toward V3+/V2+ and VO2+/VO 2 + redox reactions than CP. This is because SnO 2 increases active sites and hydrophilicity, which accelerates electrochemical kinetic and mass transfer for vanadium redox reactions. CP-SnO 2 /Sb had better electrochemical activity than CP-SnO 2 , because smaller Sb-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles more effectively disperse through carbon fibers, producing more active sites. Furthermore, Sb doping improved conductivity of SnO 2. Briefly, CP-SnO 2 /Sb exhibited excellent hydrophilicity, abundant active sites, and good conductivity, resulting in superior electrochemical activity. We next employed CP-SnO 2 /Sb as bifunctional electrodes in cell. The cell using CP-SnO 2 /Sb had better cycling stability and more capacity retention during a 50-cycle charge–discharge test at 50 mA cm−2. CP-SnO 2 /Sb reduced the electrochemical polarization of cell at higher current density. Compared with the unmodified magnetic PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 , the Gl-PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 exhibits rapid adsorption rate and high adsorption capacity. The adsorption equilibrium data was fitted well with Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Elovich model. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the MB adsorption onto the Gl-PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 was endothermic and spontaneous. Especially, through contrasting the adsorption behavior of Gl-PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 and PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 towards MB dye, we highlighted the importance of glacial acetic acid modification for enhancing the adsorption capacity of the Gl-PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4. Meanwhile, we also proposed the adsorption mechanism of the Gl-PZSNTs-Fe 3 O 4 towards MB dye. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
