It is crucial to identify factors that can predict the risk of mortality in patients newly diagnosed with interstitial lung disease (ILD). This study sought to develop and assess a composite scoring system for mortality prediction among ILD patients based on cardiovascular parameters, which were previously reported as predictors of survival. We prospectively enrolled patients with newly diagnosed ILD and monitored their survival status for 24 months. Surviving and deceased patients were compared regarding their baseline characteristics including clinical, pulmonary, and cardiovascular parameters. A system of composite scores was established based on significant cardiovascular parameters and the Gender–Age–Physiology (GAP) score. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to identify their optimal cut-off values. Univariate as well as multiple multivariate regression models were built to investigate the mortality prediction of different individual and combined parameters. Ninety-six patients newly diagnosed with ILD underwent cardiovascular evaluation. In univariate analysis, three cardiovascular parameters were identified as significant predictors of mortality risk in ILD patients, either individually or as a combination of composite scores: tricuspid regurgitation velocity > 3.1 m/s; N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide level > 300 pg/ml and computed tomography pulmonary artery/ascending aorta diameter ratio > 0.9. In multivariate analysis, a composite score of those parameters [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.37 (confidence interval [CI]:1.06–5.33); p = 0.037; Score 1] and GAP score [HR = 1.62 (CI: 1.11–2.36); p = 0.012] were the most significant predictors for mortality among ILD patients. Combination of Score 1 and GAP score (Score 2) can increase the accuracy of survival predictions (area under the curve 0.83; p < 0.001). A composite score based on cardiovascular parameters and the GAP score can be used to predict the risk of mortality of patients with ILD. Such a score achieved better diagnostic accuracy than the GAP score alone. Amino acid metabolic remodeling is a hallmark of cancer, driving an increased nutritional demand for amino acids. Amino acids are pivotal for energetic regulation, biosynthetic support, and homeostatic maintenance to stimulate cancer progression. However, the role of phenylalanine in multiple myeloma (MM) remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that phenylalanine levels in MM patients are decreased in plasma but elevated in bone marrow (BM) cells. After the treatment, phenylalanine levels increase in plasma and decrease in BM. This suggests that changes in phenylalanine have diagnostic value and that phenylalanine in the BM microenvironment is an essential source of nutrients for MM progression. The requirement for phenylalanine by MM cells exhibits a similar pattern. Inhibiting phenylalanine utilization suppresses MM cell growth and provides a synergistic effect with Bortezomib (BTZ) treatment in vitro and murine models. Mechanistically, phenylalanine deprivation induces excessive endoplasmic reticulum stress and leads to MM cell apoptosis through the ATF3–CHOP–DR5 pathway. Interference with ATF3 significantly affects phenylalanine deprivation therapy. In conclusion, we have identified phenylalanine metabolism as a characteristic feature of MM metabolic remodeling. Phenylalanine is necessary for MM proliferation, and its aberrant demand highlights the importance of low-phenylalanine diets as an adjuvant treatment for MM. This study was designed to investigate the demographics, treatment patterns, and clinical outcomes of patients newly diagnosed with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) in 3 medical centers in Taiwan before the integration of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors in clinical practice. A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from patients diagnosed with HGSOC between January 2014 and December 2018 and followed-up for a minimum of 12 months after diagnosis. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, while survival rates were evaluated using the Kaplan‒Meier method. There were 251 patients included in the analysis, and 98.8% received platinum plus paclitaxel chemotherapy (PPCT). Primary cytoreductive surgery (PCS) and interval debulking surgery (IDS) were performed in 78.9% and 17.1% of patients, respectively. The percentage of optimal surgery was higher in the IDS cohort than in the PCS cohort (83.8% vs. 53.6%). Bevacizumab was used as initiation therapy in 16.7% of patients, and maintenance therapy was administered in 6.8%. Advanced age, IDS, and suboptimal surgery were independent poor prognostic factors associated with lower overall survival (OS). Patients with optimal surgery had significantly lower OS and progression-free survival in the IDS cohort than in the PCS cohort. The predictive accuracy was good for OS at the 1-year follow-up. Advanced age, IDS, and residual disease are associated with poor OS in patients with HGSOC. The paravertebral muscles, characterized by their susceptibility to severe size loss and fat infiltration in old age, lack established reference values for age-related variations in muscle parameters. This study aims to fill this gap by establishing reference values for paravertebral muscles in a Chinese adult population. This cross-sectional study utilized the baseline data from the prospective cohort China Action on Spine and Hip (CASH). A total of 4305 community-dwelling participants aged 21–80 years in China were recruited between 2013 and 2017. Pregnant women, individuals with metal implants, limited mobility or diseases/conditions (spinal tumor, infection, etc.) affecting lumbar vertebra were excluded from the study. Psoas and paraspinal muscles were measured in quantitative computed tomography (QCT) images at the L3 and L5 levels using Osirix software. Age-related reference values for muscle area, density, and fat fraction were constructed as percentile charts using the lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) method. The paravertebral muscles exhibited an age-related decline in muscle area and density, coupled with an increase in muscle fat fraction. Between the ages of 25 and 75, the reductions in psoas and paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area at the L3 level were − 0.47%/yr and − 0.53%/yr in men, and − 0.19%/yr and − 0.23%/yr in women, respectively. Notably, accelerated muscle loss was observed during menopause and postmenopause in women (45–75 years) and intermittently during middle and old age in men (35–55 and 60–75 years). Besides, the age-related decreases in PSMA, PMA, and PSMD and the increases in PSMFF were more pronounced in L5 than in L3 This study shows distinct patterns of accelerated muscle loss were identified in menopausal and postmenopausal women and in middle-aged and old men. Late recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after curative resection significantly influences long-term patient survival outcomes, and yet it remains understudied. This study aims to explore the risk factors and patterns of late recurrence and predictors of subsequent outcome. This single-center retrospective study analyzed 1,701 consecutive patients who achieved a disease-free survival period exceeding 2 years after curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma between 2001 and 2018. Univariate and multivariate analyses of factors associated with late recurrence and death after recurrence were conducted using Cox's models. The mean age of patients was 60.2 years, with 76.8% being male. During a median follow-up of 8.1 years, 653 patients (38.4%) experienced late recurrence, with median time to recurrence being 4.0 years (interquartile range, 2.7–6.0). Factors such as age >60, chronic hepatitis C, cirrhosis, high albumin-bilirubin grade, absence of family history, multiple tumors, satellite nodules, alpha-fetoprotein levels <400 ng/mL, and minor hepatic resection were identified as risk factors for late recurrence. Among patients with late recurrence, 131 (20.1%) underwent surgical treatment, 272 (41.7%) received radiofrequency ablation, and 27 (4.1%) exhibited extrahepatic lesions. A higher-high albumin-bilirubin grade, recurrent tumor >3 cm, and nonsurgical treatment emerged as predictors of death after late recurrence. Over one-third of patients who remain disease-free for more than 2 years postresection will experience late recurrence during subsequent follow-up. For 2-year disease-free survivors, risk factors for late recurrence differ from early recurrence. The regenerative microenvironment after peripheral nerve injury is imbalanced and difficult to rebalance, which is mainly affected by inflammation, oxidative stress, and inadequate blood supply. The difficulty in remodeling the nerve regeneration microenvironment is the main reason for slow nerve regeneration. Traditional drug treatments have certain limitations, such as difficulty in penetrating the blood-nerve barrier and lack of pleiotropic effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need to build multifunctional nerve grafts that can effectively regulate the regenerative microenvironment and promote nerve regeneration. Nitric oxide (NO), a highly effective gas transmitter with diatomic radicals, is an important regulator of axonal growth and migration, synaptic plasticity, proliferation of neural precursor cells, and neuronal survival. Moreover, NO provides potential anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, and blood vessel promotion applications. However, excess NO may cause cell death and neuroinflammatory cell damage. The prerequisite for NO treatment of peripheral nerve injury is that it is gradually released over time. In this study, we constructed an injectable NO slow-release system with two main components, including macromolecular NO donor nanoparticles (mPEG-P(MSNO-EG) nanoparticles, NO-NPs) and a carrier for the nanoparticles, mPEG-PA-PP injectable temperature-sensitive hydrogel. Due to the multiple physiological regulation of NO and better physiological barrier penetration, the conduit effectively regulates the inflammatory response and oxidative stress of damaged peripheral nerves, promotes nerve vascularization, and nerve regeneration and docking, accelerating the nerve regeneration process. The slow regeneration speed of peripheral nerves is mainly due to the destruction of the regeneration microenvironment. Neural conduits with drug delivery capabilities have the potential to improve the microenvironment of nerve regeneration. However, traditional drugs are hindered by the blood nerve barrier and cannot effectively target the injured area. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is beneficial in reducing anxiety in psychiatric patients. However, no studies have reported on elderly patients with generalized anxiety disorders (GAD). This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of a 6-week CES intervention for late-life GAD. This single-arm pilot study assessed 6-week CES treatment (Alpha-Stim AID) for late-life GAD and 4-week follow-up post intervention. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAMA) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were used as baseline and outcome measures at weeks 4, 6, and 10, respectively. Treatment response was defined as 50 % or more reduction of the HAMA score and remission was defined as a of score ≤7 on the HAMA. Other measures included depression, sleep quality, and quality of life assessment. We included participants (n = 27) aged 68.0 ± 5.0 years, 81.5 % of whom were female. Fifteen (55.6 %), 18 (66.7 %), and 15 (55.6 %) patients were concurrently treated with antidepressants, BZDs, and antipsychotics, respectively. Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis revealed a significant decrease in HAMA scores from baseline (20.96 ± 3.30) to week 6 (12.26 ± 7.09) and one-month (12.85 ± 7.08) follow-up at W10 (all p < 0.001). The response and remission rates were 33.3 %, 40.7 %, and 48.1 % and 25.9 %, 29.6 %, and 25.9 % at W4, W6, and W10, respectively. The CES improved depression and sleep conditions as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory-II and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Many patients pursue attractive smiles, and surgical-orthodontic treatment is a common method. We aimed to analyze the changes in smile parameters after surgical-orthodontic treatment in patients with skeletal Class III pattern and identify factors influencing postoperative outcomes. This retrospective study comprised 34 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and pure mandible prognathism who received surgical-orthodontic treatment. Hard and soft tissue parameters were assessed through lateral cephalometry, and smile esthetics were evaluated through extraoral photography. Postoperative changes in smile parameters and between-parameter correlations were analyzed. Random forest and decision tree deep learning models were used to identify factors influencing postoperative changes. Substantial postoperative changes were observed in the buccal corridor, upper lip height, and smile index. Significant between-sex differences were noted in the upper midline and right chelion. Strong, positive correlations were found between upper lip height and upper lip ratio and between lower lip height and lower lip ratio. By contrast, strong negative correlations were observed between lower teeth exposure and smile index and between interlabial gap and smile index. The highest degrees of postoperative changes were noted in asymmetry-associated smile parameters: lower lip area, interlabial gap, smile index, buccal corridor, and arc ratio. Considerable changes were noted in skeletal, dental, and soft tissue parameters after surgical-orthodontic treatment. However, the changes in smile esthetics were less prominent from the frontal view. Human iPSC-derived airway organoids (iPSC-AOs) exhibit cellular heterogenicity resembling the human native airway. Modifications of lipid metabolism were closely associated with the manifestations and prognosis of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). Pre-existing metabolic conditions exacerbated the severity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection while modulations of aberrant lipid metabolisms alleviated the manifestations. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, an experimental platform that reproduces human respiratory physiology is required. Here we generated induced pluripotent stem cell-derived airway organoids (iPSC-AOs) that resemble the human native airway. Single-cell sequencing (ScRNAseq) and microscopic examination verified the cellular heterogeneity and microstructures of iPSC-AOs, respectively. We subjected iPSC-AOs to SARS-CoV-2 infection and investigated the treatment effect of lipid modifiers statin drugs on viral pathogenesis, gene expression, and the intracellular trafficking of the SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2). In SARS-CoV-2-infected iPSC-AOs, immunofluorescence staining detected the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins and bioinformatics analysis further showed the aberrant enrichment of lipid-associated pathways. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 hijacked the host RNA replication machinery and generated the new isoforms of a high-density lipoprotein constituent apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) and the virus-scavenging protein deleted in malignant brain tumors 1 (DMBT1). Manipulating lipid homeostasis using cholesterol-lowering drugs (e.g. Statins) relocated the viral entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) and decreased N protein expression, leading to the reduction of SARS-CoV-2 entry and replication. The same lipid modifications suppressed the entry of luciferase-expressing SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses containing the S proteins derived from different SARS-CoV-2 variants, i.e. wild-type, alpha, delta, and omicron. Together, our data demonstrated that modifications of lipid pathways restrict SARS-CoV-2 propagation in the iPSC-AOs, which the inhibition is speculated through the translocation of ACE2 from the cell membrane to the cytosol. Considering the highly frequent mutation and generation of SARS-CoV-2 variants, targeting host metabolisms of cholesterol or other lipids may represent an alternative approach against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Cachexia is prevalent in cancer patients. The conventional diagnostic criteria for cachexia are often based on Western evidence, lacking consensus for Asian populations. This study aims to compare Asian Working Group for Cachexia (AWGC) criteria with Fearon's criteria, assessing their differences in population characteristics and prognostic impact. The clinical data of patients who underwent radical gastrectomy between 2013 and 2019 were prospectively collected. Cachexia diagnosis involves the utilization of either AWGC criteria and the previous international consensus proposed by Fearon et al. A scoring model is established based on the optional criteria according to the AWGC criteria. Univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox regression analysis were conducted to determine the independent effect factors for postoperative complications and overall survival. In a total of 1330 patients, 461 met AWGC cachexia criteria and 311 met Fearon's criteria. Excluding 262 overlapping cases, those diagnosed solely with AWGC-cachexia had higher age and lower BMI, albumin, hemoglobin, and handgrip strength compared to those by Fearon's criteria alone. AWGC-cachexia independently increased the risk of postoperative complications, whereas Fearon's criteria did not. Patients with AWGC-cachexia also exhibited shorter overall survival than Fearon's criteria. The AWGC-based cachexia grading system effectively stratifies the risks of postoperative complications and mortality. Real-time surveillance of COVID-19 in large-scale community outbreaks presents challenges. Simple counts of the daily confirmed cases can be misleading due to constraints from bottlenecks in access to care or laboratory testing. This study aimed to investigate the role of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen rapid diagnostic test (Ag-RDT) in addressing these challenges for real-time COVID-19 surveillance. This study included the results of 86,933 SARS-CoV-2 Ag-RDT and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests. These were conducted at four community testing stations within the Taipei metropolitan area during a community COVID-19 outbreak spanning from May 17, 2021, to August 9, 2021. We examined the correlation between the positive rates of Ag-RDT tests and the epidemic curve of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases by onset date to examine its role in real-time surveillance. During the 85-day study period, the trend of Ag-RDT test positive rates paralleled that of the epidemic curve. The correlation between the Ag-RDT positive rate and the number of cases (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.968) is comparable to that of the RT-PCR positive rate (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.964). The Ag-RDT positive rate exhibited a more advanced leading trend, with Ag-RDT leading by 3 days in comparison to the 2-day lead for RT-PCR. The positive rate of SARS-CoV-2 Ag-RDT tests at community testing stations serves as a good surrogate for assessing virus activity within the community and a useful tool for real-time COVID-19 surveillance. It is a robust indicator of the outbreak trend and near-term numbers of cases. This finding may facilitate the management of subsequent outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases. The clinical presentations of abusive head trauma can abruptly worsen, so the occurrence of seizures and changes of EEG can be variable according to patients' conditions. Since the changes of EEG background waves reflect the cortical function of children, we aimed to find out whether the timing of EEG background, epileptiform discharges and seizure patterns were associated with the outcomes of patients with AHT. Using seizure type and acute stage electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics to assess adverse neurological outcomes in children with seizures secondary to abusive head trauma (AHT). Children who were hospitalized with AHT at a tertiary referral hospital from October 2000 to April 2010 were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 50 children below 6 years of age admitted due to AHT were included. KOSCHI outcome scale was used to evaluate the primary outcome and neurological impairment was used as secondary outcome after 6 months discharge. Children with apnea, cardiac arrest, reverse blood flow and skull fracture in clinic had a higher mortality rate even in the no-seizure group (3/5 [60%] vs. 3/45 [6.7%], odds ratio [OR] = 11; 95% CI = 2.3–52; p = 0.025). Seizure occurrence reduced mostly at the second day after admission in seizure groups; but children with persistent seizures for 1 week showed poor neurological outcomes. The occurrence of initial seizure was frequency associated with younger age; focal seizure, diffuse cortical dysfunction in acute-stage EEG, and low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score were significantly related to poor outcomes after 6 months. Diffuse cortical dysfunction was also associated with motor, speech, and cognitive dysfunction. Diffuse cortical dysfunction in acute-stage EEG combined with low GCS score and focal seizure may related to poor outcomes and neurological dysfunctions in children with AHT. • Ages of the children in the repetitive seizures and status epilepticus groups were younger than in the single seizure group in abusive head trauma. • No significant differences in outcome between the seizure groups. • EEG findings of diffuse cortical dysfunction, focal seizures and severe Glasgow Coma Scale were significantly related to poor outcomes. • Acute-stage background EEG of diffuse cortical dysfunction could predict poor outcomes with the development of multiple neurological dysfunctions. Biomaterial implants are emerging as a treatment choice for pleurodesis; however, the optimal biomaterial and form for managing spontaneous pneumothorax, particularly post-video-assisted thoracic surgery, remain under investigation. This study evaluated the mechanical and biological properties of the poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) membrane as a sclerosing agent for pleurodesis in Landrace pigs. Twenty-four Landrace pigs were split into two groups for mechanical abrasion and PCL membrane pleurodesis, with the latter group's PCL meshes inserted using video-assisted thoracic surgery. The mechanical and biological properties of the PCL membrane were assessed in pigs at three, six, and 12 months after the procedure. This assessment involved a range of techniques, such as the T-Peel test, macroscopic evaluation with a scoring scale, microscopic examination, and biomechanical and molecular weight analysis. The PCL membrane group outperformed the traditional abrasion group, with stronger adhesions seen over longer implantation durations. This group also showed superior and more consistent results in both macroscopic and microscopic evaluations compared to the control group. The membrane-based method was easier and faster to perform than the control group's method, and importantly, no mortality occurred following membrane implantation. This study is the pioneering effort to present long-term findings regarding the mechanical and biological properties of the PCL membrane in an in vivo animal model. The membrane demonstrated better adhesion ability than that of traditional abrasion and showed reassuring biocompatibility in both the pig model, suggesting its potential as treatment for patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax. /Purpose: To achieve the World Health Organization goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030, a key strategy in resource-limited areas is to identify the areas with high prevalence and to prioritize screening and treatment intervention. We hypothesized that a hospital-based laboratory database could be used to estimate the township- and village-specific anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence. Yunlin County Public Health Bureau has been collecting anti-HCV test data from eight major hospitals. Township- and village-specific screening testing rates and anti-HCV prevalence were calculated for residents 40 years or older. A township with a wide range of anti-HCV prevalence rates was selected for outreach universal screening and for validating the village-specific prevalence of anti-HCV in the analysis of the data from the hospitals. The overall anti-HCV screening testing rate in Yunlin County was 30.4 %, whereas the anti-HCV prevalence rate for persons 40 years or older was 15.4 %. The village-specific anti-HCV prevalence rates ranged from 3.8 % to 85.8 %. Community-based screening was conducted in Kouhu Township. The village-specific anti-HCV prevalence rates ranged from 0 % to 18.8 %. Three of the four villages had the highest village-specific anti-HCV prevalence in the community-based study and the hospital-based study. Additionally, 95.8 % of the new HCV cases detected by universal screening received anti-HCV therapy. The hospital-based database provided a framework for identifying the villages with high anti-HCV prevalence. The regulation of intracellular ionic homeostasis to trigger antigen-specific immune responses has attracted extensive interest in tumor therapy. In this study, we developed a dual-pathway nanoreactor, Au-Cu 2-x Se@ZIF-8@P18 NPs (ACS-Z-P NPs), which targets danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and releases Zn2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Zn2+ released from the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was deposited in the cytoplasm, leading to aberrant transcription levels of intracellular zinc-regulated proteins and DNA damage, thereby inducing pyroptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD) dependent on caspase1/gasdermin D (GSDMD) pathway. Furthermore, upon laser irradiation, ACS-Z-P NPs could break through the limitations of inherent defects of immunosuppression in TME, enhance ROS generation through a Fenton-like reaction cascade, which subsequently triggered the activation of inflammatory vesicles and the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). This cascade effect led to the amplification of pyroptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD), thereby remodeling the immunosuppressed TME. Consequently, this process improved dendritic cell (DC) antigen presentation and augmented anti-tumor T-cell responses, effectively initiating antigen-specific immune responses and further enhancing pyroptosis and ICD. This study explores the therapeutic properties of these mechanisms in detail. The synthesized Au-Cu 2-x Se@ZIF-8@P18 nanoparticles (ACS-Z-Ps) can effectively enhance the bodyʼs immune response by regulating zinc ion levels within cells. This regulation leads to abnormal levels of zinc-regulated protein transcription and DNA damage, which induces cellular pyroptosis. As a result, antigen presentation to dendritic cells (DCs) is improved, and anti-tumor T-cell responses are enhanced. The ACS-Z-P NPs overcome the limitations of ROS deficiency and immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment by using H 2 O 2 in the tumor microenvironment through a Fenton-like reaction. This leads to an increased production of ROS and O 2 , remodeling of the immunosuppressed tumor microenvironment, and enhanced induction of cell pyroptosis and immunogenic cell death. The gut is a vital organ that is central to the absorption and metabolic processing of orally administered drugs. While there have been many models developed with the goal of studying the absorption of drugs in the gut, these models fail to adequately recapitulate the diverse, complex gastrointestinal microenvironment. The recent emergence of microfluidic organ-on-a-chip technologies has provided a novel means of modeling the gut, yielding radical new insights into the structure of the gut and the mechanisms through which it shapes disease, with key implications for biomedical developmental efforts. Such organ-on-a-chip technologies have been demonstrated to exhibit greater cost-effectiveness, fewer ethical concerns, and a better ability to address inter-species differences in traditional animal models in the context of drug development. The present review offers an overview of recent developments in the reconstruction of gut structure and function in vitro using microfluidic gut-on-a-chip (GOC) systems, together with a discussion of the potential applications of these platforms in the context of drug development and the challenges and future prospects associated with this technology. This paper outlines the characteristics of the different cell types most frequently used to construct microfluidic gut-on-a-chip models and the microfluidic devices employed for the study of drug absorption. And the applications of gut-related multichip coupling and disease modelling in the context of drug development is systematically reviewed. With the detailed summarization of microfluidic chip-based gut models and discussion of the prospective directions for practical application, this review will provide insights to the innovative design and application of microfluidic gut-on-a-chip for drug development. Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) manifests as sharp and uncomfortable pain due to the exposure of dentinal tubules (DTs) following the erosion of tooth enamel. Desensitizing agents commonly used in clinical practice have limitations such as limited depth of penetration, slow remineralization and no antimicrobial properties. To alleviate these challenges, our study designed a lactoferrin-derived amyloid nanofilm (PTLF nanofilm) inspired by the saliva-acquired membrane (SAP). The nanofilm utilises Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP) to disrupt the disulfide bonds of lactoferrin (LF) under physiological conditions. The PTLF nanofilm modifies surfaces across various substrates and effectively prevents the early and stable adhesion of cariogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Simultaneously, it adheres rapidly and securely to demineralized dentin surfaces, facilitating in-situ remineralization of HAP through a simple immersion process. This leads to the formation of a remineralized layer resembling natural dentin, with an occlusion depth of dentinal tubules exceeding 80 µm after three days. The in vivo and vitro results confirm that the PTLF nanofilm possesses good biocompatibility and its ability to exert simultaneous antimicrobial effects and dentin remineralization. Accordingly, this innovative bifunctional PTLF amyloid coating offers promising prospects for the management of DH-related conditions. 1. Dynamic obstacle avoidance is crucial in autonomous driving, ensuring vehicle safety by preventing collisions and enhancing driving efficiency. Dynamic obstacle avoidance algorithms have made significant progress due to deep learning. However, video-based target detection methods can suffer from missed or false detections when processing consecutive frames, especially for high-speed moving targets or in complex dynamic scenes. Multi-target tracking methods require intricate algorithm designs for target initialization and occluded object recovery, which can be compromised by tracker performance, leading to unstable tracking or target loss. To address the issue of target loss in multi-target tracking, we designed the novel YTCN model that infuses time series information through temporal convolution and enhances the sensitivity of the receptive field with Spatial Pyramid Pooling, Feature Concatenate and Spatial Convolution(SPPFCSPC), enhancing the model's feature extraction capability. Simultaneously, we developed the novel Global Attention Mechanism(GAM) and Double Attention(DA) mechanisms that merge channel and spatial features to enhance feature representation. Finally we design the Temporal Residual Block(TRB) to model the temporal obstacles. Experimental results show that our method achieves 82.4 % of mAP_0.5 on the BDD 100 K dataset, which gets 1.3 % higher than the previous methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of computed tomography (CT) for craniofacial measurements is common in medical imaging, but concerns about accuracy and reliability persist, especially with different CT technologies. This study assessed the accuracy of twenty-six common measurements on consecutive CT images from the same patients, using multidetector CT (MDCT) and cone-beam CT (CBCT) with two software programs (Amira and Dolphin). Ten adult subjects with consecutive CBCT scans within one year were randomly selected. Another ten subjects with consecutive MDCT scans were paired with the CBCT group based on age, gender, race, occlusion, and craniofacial pattern. All digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) files were randomly coded and analyzed using the two software programs. Intra-examiner reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Successive measurement errors from consecutive scans for both imaging modalities and software programs were compared. For most skeletal linear and angular measurements, Dolphin showed greater successive measurement errors compared to Amira. Eight of the 26 common measurements had errors greater than one unit (millimeter or degree). Despite almost perfect intra-examiner reliability for upper airway analysis, average successive measurement errors were notably high, particularly for intraoral and oropharyngeal airway volumes. The successive Dolphin measurement error for oropharyngeal airway volume on CBCT images was over three times that on MDCT images. Given the substantial successive measurement errors observed during consecutive CT scanning for the upper airway, this study does not support the quantitative use of CT for analyzing changes in airway dimensions for research purposes. In Taiwan, there are very few dental radiology curricula in medical radiation education system. This study assessed the participants' learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan. This study used the questionnaire survey to evaluate the participants' learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan. In this study, 85 participants filled out the questionnaires completely after finishing the dental radiology course. The majority of participants agreed that dental radiology courses were rare in the medical radiation school curricula and the continuing education courses of medical radiation technologists. Moreover, most of participants found this course to be helpful in raising their basic knowledge about the dental radiology, their attitude towards the dental radiology, and their interest in further learning of the dental radiology. They were satisfied with the courses. The degree of agreement for each question was high with all the mean scores for each question being between 3.87 and 4.61. The numbers (rates) of respondents who answered as agree were between 58 (68.24%) and 84 (98.82%). The dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists is found to increase the participants' basic knowledge about the dental radiology, and their awareness and understanding of the radiation protection in dental radiography. Understanding the relationship between maxillary sinus and posterior root apices is critical in preventing dental treatment complications. This study aimed to analyze and showcase the relationship between the posterior root apices and the maxillary sinus floor, the distance to the buccal cortical bone, and their correlation with age, gender, and sides. Cone-beam computed tomography images were collected from 94 patients with a total of 478 maxillary posterior teeth and 997 roots. The shortest distance from root apices to the closest border of maxillary sinus and the outer buccal cortical bone margin were measured and grouped for statistical analysis for the differences (P < 0.05). The root apices of maxillary molars and single-rooted second premolars were located closer to the maxillary sinus compared to first premolars (P < 0.01). The buccal root of two-rooted first premolar had the shortest horizontal distance to the buccal cortical bone among all roots (P < 0.01). The lowest position of the maxillary sinus floor was mostly located at the palatal side (P < 0.01) and between the buccal and palatal root apices (P < 0.01) in the maxillary premolars and molars, respectively. Increasing age would lead to longer distances between the root apices and the maxillary sinus (P < 0.01). Additionally, male patients had thicker buccal cortical bone than female patients (P < 0.01). Different tooth positions, age, and gender significantly impact the relationships between root apices and the maxillary sinus and buccal cortical plates, informing patient-centered and individually tailored approaches for more effective and safer surgical endodontic treatment. Dental plaque is the main cause leading to the dental caries and periodontal diseases. The main purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of oral spray containing the antimicrobial peptide P-113 on the reduction of oral bacteria number and dental plaque formation in a randomized clinical assessment. This study was divided into two parts. In Part A, we investigated the user experiences with the P-113 containing oral spray. In part B, 14 subjects in the experimental group used the P-113-containing oral spray, while 14 subjects in the control group used a placebo without the P-113 in a 4-week clinical trial. Participants were asked to use the P-113-containing oral spray or placebo 3 times per day and 5 times per use. Moreover, 3 check-ups and 2 washouts were carried out to evaluate the DMFT score, dental plaque weight, dental plaque index, and gingival index. In part A, up to 91.8% of the subjects in the experimental group were satisfied with the use of the P-113-containing oral spray. In part B, based on our PacBio SMRT sequencing platform and DADA2 analysis, the numbers of Streptococcus and Porphyromonas in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group. In addition, decreased dental plaque weight, dental plaque index, and gingival index were all observed in the experimental group. Patients' considerations when choosing an orthodontist are influenced by many factors, including background, ethnicity, and location. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify factors influencing patients' considerations when selecting an orthodontist in both Malaysia and Taiwan. In total, 248 dental students from Taipei Medical University and 110 dental students from Manipal University College Malaysia were selected for this study. Participants' considerations when selecting an orthodontist were assessed using a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire collected data regarding participants' demographic characteristics and their preferences regarding clinical settings, orthodontist attributes, administrative systems, and the influence of social media. The gathered data were analyzed and compared using independent t -test, ANOVA, and chi-squared for both cohorts. The present results revealed significant differences between the Malaysian and Taiwanese participants with several variables, including orthodontist experience, recommendations, pain-free treatment procedures, treatment duration, friendly reception, sources of information about orthodontists, and preferred social media platforms. Notably, among the Taiwanese participants, "person responsible for treatment costs," was significantly correlated with the orthodontist's age, the orthodontist's work experience, information sources, travel distance, and content posted by orthodontists on social media. By contrast, among the Malaysian participants, this variable was correlated with the work experience of orthodontists. Significant differences were observed between the Malaysian and Taiwanese participants in terms of their considerations when choosing an orthodontist. Participant's gender significantly influenced orthodontist preferences among the Malaysian participants, whereas the individual responsible for treatment costs was identified to be the most crucial factor influencing the Taiwanese participants. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a condition characterized by inflammation and excessive collagen deposition, which has been identified as a potentially malignant disorder. Recently, several microRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to be implicated in various disorders associated with fibrosis. However, how these miRNAs modulate OSF development is poorly understood. Therefore, the study aimed to identify the specific miRNAs that contribute to the progression of OSF and to investigate their molecular mechanisms in promoting fibrosis. The expression and clinical significance of potential pro-fibrosis miRNA in the OSF cohort and primary buccal mucosal fibroblasts were confirmed through RNA sequencing and qRT–PCR. Luciferase reporter activity assay, miRNA mimic or inhibitor, and short-hairpin RNA silencing were used to elucidate the molecular mechanism of miRNA. Transwell migration, collagen contraction, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation detection were used to investigate the effects of this mechanism on the myofibroblast phenotype and cellular pro-fibrosis capacity. This study demonstrated that miR-190a was overexpressed in fibrotic buccal mucosal fibroblasts (fBMFs). Transfecting fBMFs with miR-190a inhibitor resulted in reduced cell migration, collagen gel contraction, ROS generation, and expression of fibrotic markers. Furthermore, miR-190a exerted this pro-fibrosis property by direct binding to its target, Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15). The results also indicated that the aberrant upregulation of miR-190a, in turn, downregulated the expression of KLF15, which resulted in the activation of myofibroblast. Our findings demonstrated that miR-190a was involved in myofibroblast activation, suggesting that targeting the miR-190a/KLF15 axis may be a feasible approach in the therapy of OSF. A distinctive method for extraction of the bilateral impacted mandibular second molars (MM2s) and moving the bilateral mesioangularly impacted mandibular third molars (MM3s) to the MM2 positions with appropriate occlusion by orthodontic uprighting and protraction was demonstrated in a 24-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman, respectively. Although the surgical procedures should be performed under general anesthesia, rapid orthodontic treatment after tooth extraction aided in the initial teeth movement of the bilateral MM3s. The proposed treatment could be implemented and completed in 2 years or less. After undergoing the orthodontic treatment, the patient achieved robust bone support no matter with or without bone grafting. With this less technique-sensitive method, the patient still achieved improved posterior occlusion and masticatory function. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), characterized by excessive collagen deposition by myofibroblasts, is often linked to Areca nuts consumption. Probiotics consumption has shown protective effects against fibrotic diseases, and recently, their metabolic byproducts, known as postbiotics, have demonstrated superior advantages over probiotics. However, studies on the therapeutic impact of postbiotics on OSF have been scarce. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of PostBio GK4, a postbiotic derived from Lactobacillus pentosus GK4 , on OSF and explore its underlying mechanisms. The cytotoxicity of GK4 in normal buccal mucosal fibroblasts (BMFs) and fibrotic BMFs (fBMFs) were assessed. Following this, we evaluated the effects of GK4 on collagen contraction, migratory, and wound healing capacities in arecoline-induced fibrotic BMFs. Next, Western blotting and ELISA were employed to assess GK4's impact on fibrosis-related proteins such as COL1A1, and α-SMA, as well as on TGF-β and Smad2/3 signaling pathway. Arecoline was shown to stimulate cell migratory, contractile and wound healing abilities as well as the expression of α-SMA and COL1A1 in BMFs. Treatment with GK4 reduced all arecoline-induced phenomena in BMFs. Moreover, GK4 diminished the increased expression of TGF-β and Smad2/3. Our findings proposed that GK4 may exert a suppressive effect on arecoline-induced myofibroblast activities via the inhibition of TGF-β and Smad2/3 signaling pathway. Targeting fibroblast-activation protein is a newer diagnostic approach for the visualization of tumor stroma, and a novel aluminum-[18F] fluoride (Al18F)-labeled fibroblast-activation protein inhibitor-4 (FAPI-04), hereafter [18F] AlF-NOTA-FAPI-04, presents a promising alternative to gallium 68 (68Ga)–labeled FAPI owing to its relatively longer half-life. This study sought to evaluate the clinical usefulness of [18F] AlF-NOTA-FAPI-04 PET/CT for the diagnosis of various types of cancer, compared to [18F] FDG PET/CT. In this prospective study conducted from October 2021 to January 2024, a total of 148 patients with 16 different tumor entities underwent contemporaneous 18F-FDG and 18F-FAPI-04 PET/CT either for an initial assessment or for recurrence detection. Uptake of 18F-FDG and 18F-FAPI-04 was quantified by the maximum standard uptake value (SUV max). Diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were compared by using the McNemar test between these two imaging agents. 18F-FAPI-04 PET/CT could clearly depict 16 different types of cancer with excellent image contrast, thereby leading to a higher detection rate of primary tumors than did 18F-FDG PET/CT (98.06% vs. 81.55%, P ＜ 0.001). In per-lymph node analysis, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in the diagnosis of metastatic lymph nodes were 92.44%, 90.44%, and 91.56%, respectively, which was much higher than that 18F-FDG PET/CT (80.23%, 79.41%, and 79.87%, respectively). Meanwhile, 18F-FAPI-04 PET/CT outperformed 18F-FDG PET/CT in identifying more suspected distant metastases (86.57% vs. 74.13%, P ＜ 0.001). Furthermore, 18F-FAPI-04 PET/CT upgraded tumor staging in 36/101 patients (35.6%), and detected tumor recurrence or metastases in 43/47 patients (91.49%). Our findings demonstrated that primary and metastatic lesions in patients with various types of malignant tumors are well-visualized on 18F-FAPI-04 PET/CT, which exhibited a superior diagnostic performance than 18F-FDG PET/CT. This study aimed to develop a diagnostic model based on clinical and CT features for identifying clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) in small renal masses (SRMs). This retrospective multi-centre study enroled patients with pathologically confirmed SRMs. Data from three centres were used as training set (n = 229), with data from one centre serving as an independent test set (n = 81). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were utilised to screen independent risk factors for ccRCC and build the classification and regression tree (CART) diagnostic model. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the performance of the model. To demonstrate the clinical utility of the model, three radiologists were asked to diagnose the SRMs in the test set based on professional experience and re-evaluated with the aid of the CART model. There were 310 SRMs in 309 patients and 71% (220/310) were ccRCC. In the testing cohort, the AUC of the CART model was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.81, 0.97). For the radiologists' assessment, the AUC of the three radiologists based on the clinical experience were 0.78 (95% CI:0.66,0.89), 0.65 (95% CI:0.53,0.76), and 0.68 (95% CI:0.57,0.79). With the CART model support, the AUC of the three radiologists were 0.93 (95% CI:0.86,0.97), 0.87 (95% CI:0.78,0.95) and 0.87 (95% CI:0.78,0.95). Interobserver agreement was improved with the CART model aids (0.323 vs 0.654, P < 0.001). The CART model can identify ccRCC with better diagnostic efficacy than that of experienced radiologists and improve diagnostic performance, potentially reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between minimum inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter magnification percentage and in-situ IVC thrombosis (iIVCT) after inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) placement in lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LEDVT). This was a single center retrospective study. Study sample consisted of patients with LEDVT who received computed tomography venography of IVC both before and after IVCF placement between January 2019 and October 2023. A propensity score matching (PSM) was also used in covariates including age, hypertension, and thrombus limbs. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to mitigate the impact of selection bias and control for potential confounding variables. The incremental changes associated with minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage and iIVCT were evaluated with restricted cubic spines (RCS). 113 LEDVT patients (age 58.8 ± 17.8 years, 57.5% male) were included. Multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed a significant positive association between the minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage and the incidence of iIVCT after adjusting for the age, hypertension, and thrombus limbs (adjusted hazard risk [HR] = 1.02, 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.02, p <.001), suggesting minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage was an independent risk factor for iIVCT. Moreover, after using PSM, the association remained significant (HR = 1.01, 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.02, p <.001). RCS analysis showed a non-linear dose-response association (s-shaped fitting curve) between minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage and iIVCT risk (nonlinear p =.041). The fitting curve indicated a threshold effect (overall p =.005), with a smaller magnification percentage being negatively associated with the incidence of iIVCT, presenting continuously decreasing HR at levels of magnification percentage < 37.3%. A decreasing minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage is consistently associated with a decreasing risk of iIVCT following IVCF placement when the percentage is < 37.3%, indicating that it is a protective factor against iIVCT incidence. This single-center retrospective study, which designed to investigate the relationship between minimum inferior vena cava diameter magnification percentage and in-situ inferior vena cava thrombosis (iIVCT) following inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) placement in lower extremity deep vein thrombosis in 113 patients, demonstrated that decreasing minimum IVC diameter magnification percentage is consistently associated with a decreasing risk of iIVCT following IVCF placement when the percentage is < 37.3%, indicating that it is a protective factor against iIVCT incidence. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a combination of D-amino acids (DAAs) and trans -cinnamaldehyde (TC) demonstrates superior antibiofilm activity to calcium hydroxide (CH) and untreated controls. In this 3-part in vitro study, the concentration of DAAs (D-methionine, D-leucine, D-tyrosine, and D-tryptophan) that would significantly decrease Enterococcus faecalis and Actinomyces naeslundii biofilm biomass was first determined. Then, the effect of TC + selected DAAs on polymicrobial biofilms was characterized by quantifying the biomass and biofilm viability. Finally, the antibiofilm effects of TC + DAA was compared with CH and untreated controls by (i) determining bacterial viability and (ii) quantifying biofilm matrix composition using selective fluorescence-binding analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and appropriate multiple comparisons test, with P <.05 considered as statistically significant. TC (0.06%) + D-tyrosine (1 mM) + D-tryptophan (25 mM) significantly reduced the biomass and biofilm viability compared to the control (P <.05). While no significant difference was observed between TC + DAA and CH in the cultivable bacterial counts (P >.05), confocal microscopy demonstrated a significantly greater percentage of dead bacteria in TC + DAA-treated biofilms compared to CH and the control (P <.05). TC + DAA significantly decreased the biovolume and all the examined components of the biofilm matrix quantity compared to the control, while CH significantly reduced only the exopolysaccharide quantity (P <.05). Skin-electronic interfaces have broad applications in fields such as diagnostics, therapy, health monitoring, and smart wearables. However, they face various challenges in practical use. For instance, in wet environments, the cohesion of the material may be compromised, and under dynamic conditions, maintaining conformal adhesion becomes difficult, leading to reduced sensitivity and fidelity of electrical signal transmission. The key scientific issue lies in forming a stable and tight mechanical-electronic coupling at the tissue-electronic interface. Here, inspired by octopus sucker structures and snail mucus, we propose a strategy for hydrogel skin-electronic interfaces based on multi-coupled bioinspired adhesion and introduce an ultrasound (US)-mediated interfacial toughness enhancement mechanism. Ultimately, using digital light processing micro-nano additive manufacturing technology (DLP 3D), we have developed a multifunctional, diagnostic-therapeutic integrated patch (PAMS). This patch exhibits moderate water swelling properties, a maximum deformation of up to 460%, high sensitivity (GF = 4.73), and tough and controllable bioadhesion (shear strength increased by 109.29%). Apart from outstanding mechanical and electronic properties, the patch also demonstrates good biocompatibility, anti-bacterial properties, photothermal properties, and resistance to freezing at −20 °C. Experimental results show that this skin-electronic interface can sensitively monitor temperature, motion, and electrocardiogram signals. Utilizing a rat frostbite model, we have demonstrated that this skin-electronic interface can effectively accelerate the wound healing process as a wound patch. This research offers a promising strategy for improving the performance of bioelectronic devices, sensor-based educational reforms and personalized diagnostics and therapeutics in the future. Establishing stable and tight mechanical-electronic coupling at the tissue-electronic interface is essential for the diverse applications of bioelectronic devices. Chronic respiratory failure is a common cause of ventilator dependence in the intensive care unit (ICU). The causes of chronic respiratory failure include primary disease or complications, such as ICU-acquired weakness. Traditional practice requires patients to remain immobile and bedridden; however, recent evidence suggests that early adequate exercise promotes recovery without increasing risks. In this study, we explored the efficacy of planned progressive abdominal sandbag training in promoting the successful withdrawal of patients with chronic respiratory failure from mechanical ventilation. This study was conducted between April 2019 and November 2020. Patients were recruited and divided into two groups: abdominal sandbag training group and control group (no training). The training group participated in a 3-month daily pulmonary rehabilitation program, which involved a 30-min session of progressive sandbag loading on the upper abdomen as a form of diaphragmatic resistant exercise. The pressure support level of the ventilator was adjusted to maintain a tidal volume of 8 mL/kg. To investigate the effect of abdominal sandbag training on patients with chronic respiratory failure, we compared tidal volume, shallow breathing index, maximum respiratory pressure, and diaphragm characteristics between the training and control groups. This study included 31 patients; of them, 17 (54.8 %) received abdominal sandbag training and 14 (45.2 %) did not. No significant between-group difference was found in baseline characteristics. Compared with the control group, the training group exhibited considerable improvements in ventilation-related parameters (p < 0.001): the tidal volume markedly increased (p = 0.012), rapid shallow breathing index declined (p = 0.016), and maximum respiratory pressure increased (p < 0.001) in the training group. The diaphragm motion value (p = 0.048) and diaphragm thickness (p = 0.041) were greater in the training group than in the control group. Nine patients (52.9 %) in the training group were removed from the ventilator compared with 1 (7.1 %) in the control group (p = 0.008). Abdominal sandbag training may be beneficial for patients dependent on a ventilator. The training improves the function of the diaphragm muscle, thereby increasing tidal volume and reducing the respiratory rate and rapid shallow breathing index, thus facilitating withdrawal from ventilation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the reliability and validity of the Perioperative Anxiety Scale-7 (PAS-7), which was created by Chinese medical professionals, by using the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI-S) as the standard for the diagnosis of preoperative anxiety, and to compare whether there is a difference between the PAS-7 and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) in the diagnosis of preoperative anxiety in the Chinese population. This study was an observational study. The PAS-7, APAIS, and STAI-S were all completed the day before surgery. The internal consistency test was used to evaluate the scale's reliability, and exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to assess the scale's construct validity. Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation between PAS-7 and STAI-S, and APAIS. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the diagnostic value of PAS-7 and APAIS. The PAS-7 Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.804. The indicators of the overall fitting coefficient were within the acceptable range. PAS-7 scores correlated well with STAI-S and APAIS scores (P <.01). The area under the ROC curve of PAS-7 was 0.808 (0.752-0.856), and the area under the ROC curve of APAIS was 0.674 (0.611-0.733). The difference between areas was 0.133 (0.0612-0.206), P <.001, and the diagnostic value of PAS-7 was higher than that of APAIS. The PAS-7 scale has high reliability and validity and can be used to assess preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing elective surgery. Portal hypertension (PH) is one of the most frequent complications of chronic liver disease. The peripheral 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level was increased in cirrhotic patients. We aimed to elucidate the function and mechanism of 5-HT receptor 1A (HTR1A) in the portal vein (PV) on PH. PH models were induced by thioacetamide injection, bile duct ligation, or partial PV ligation. HTR1A expression was detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, and immunofluorescence staining. In situ intraportal infusion was used to assess the effects of 5-HT, the HTR1A agonist 8-OH-DPAT, and the HTR1A antagonist WAY-100635 on portal pressure (PP). Htr1a -knockout (Htr1a –/–) rats and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC)–specific Htr1a -knockout (Htr1a ΔVSMC) mice were used to confirm the regulatory role of HTR1A on PP. HTR1A expression was significantly increased in the hypertensive PV of PH model rats and cirrhotic patients. Additionally, 8-OH-DPAT increased, but WAY-100635 decreased, the PP in rats without affecting liver fibrosis and systemic hemodynamics. Furthermore, 5-HT or 8-OH-DPAT directly induced the contraction of isolated PVs. Genetic deletion of Htr1a in rats and VSMC-specific Htr1a knockout in mice prevented the development of PH. Moreover, 5-HT triggered adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate pathway–mediated PV smooth muscle cell contraction via HTR1A in the PV. We also confirmed alverine as an HTR1A antagonist and demonstrated its capacity to decrease PP in rats with thioacetamide-, bile duct ligation–, and partial PV ligation–induced PH. Our findings reveal that 5-HT promotes PH by inducing the contraction of the PV and identify HTR1A as a promising therapeutic target for attenuating PH. As an HTR1A antagonist, alverine is expected to become a candidate for clinical PH treatment. However, existing educational strategies could not adequately frame a learning environment for nursing students to fully experience collaboration in a multidisciplinary team. • Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) may be a promising educational approach to complement the limitations of current education strategies in nursing education because it allows nursing students to fully experience multidisciplinary collaboration through conducting community projects in a multidisciplinary context. • The preliminary findings suggest the potential positive effect of CBL in strengthening nursing students' multidisciplinary collaboration. It serves as a reference for nurse educators to integrate CBL into nursing curricula. To examine the effect of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) on multidisciplinary collaboration among nursing students. A one-group pretest-posttest study. Nursing students worked in multidisciplinary groups to conduct community projects framed with CBL. The students designed, planned, and implemented health promotion activities for the selected health topics over a 14-week semester. Multidisciplinary collaboration was measured by Collaboration Scale at baseline and after the projects were completed. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the total and subdomain collaboration scores within-group. p-value <0.05 was statistical significance. The total and subdomain collaboration scores were significantly greater than those of the pretest ones (p<0.001), with the effect sizes (r) ranging from 0.48 to 0.71. The present findings shed light on the potential positive effect of CBL on strengthening nursing students' competence in multidisciplinary collaboration. Iliofemoral venous obstructive disease can result in significant, potentially debilitating symptoms that can negatively affect quality of life. Unlike arterial disease, patients with deep venous disease have a significantly lower median age, therefore the need for long term stent patency becomes a matter of decades rather than years. Furthermore, iliofemoral lesions frequently require stent placement across the inguinal ligament. Such stents are subject to dynamic stress from leg movement and associated concerns for device fatigue, resulting in stent fracture. The aim of this study was to describe an in vitro 50 year stent fatigue test method designed to assess durability against dynamic stress induced device fracture. Through literature review, cadaver studies, and computer modelling, the most challenging loading was confirmed to be hip flexion across the inguinal ligament. This occurs when the patient adjusts between a seated and standing position. Sit to stand hip flexion at the inguinal ligament was effectively simulated on the bench in this in vitro experimental study. When tested under challenge parameters, hip flexion was reliably found to cause fractures in non-venous nitinol stents. However, a dedicated self expanding nitinol venous stent, engineered for improved durability, underwent up to 50 years of simulated loading on the bench with 15% (3/20) of stents experiencing fractures at 50 years, compared with fractures in 35% (14/40) of non-venous stents tested to 1.4 years; no statistical testing was performed as durations do not match and the objective was to demonstrate the test method. The presented fatigue test method is a suitable approach for evaluating the durability of stents intended for venous use. The present study aimed to identify the risk factors of periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF) after cementless total hip arthroplasty and rank them based on importance. The age, sex, body mass index (BMI), osteoporosis, canal flare index (CFI), canal bone ratio (CBR), canal calcar ratio (CCR), stem design, and stem canal fill ratio (P1, P2, P3, and P4) of the proximal femoral medullary cavity of 111 total hip arthroplasty patients who had PFF and 388 who did not have PFF were analyzed. Independent-samples student t -tests were used for continuous variables, and Chi -square tests were used for categorical variables. The importance rankings of influencing factors were assessed using a random forest algorithm. Dimensionally reduced variables were then incorporated into a binary logistic regression model to determine the PFF-related risk factors. The mean age, BMI, CBR, CCR, and incidence of osteoporosis were higher in cases of PFF (all P <.001), while the mean CFI, P1, P2, P3, and P4 were lower in cases of PFF (P <.001, P =.033, P =.008, P <.001, and P <.001, respectively). Additionally, the stem design was also statistically associated with PFF (P <.001). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that advanced age, higher BMI, osteoporosis, stem design, lower CFI, higher CBR, higher CCR, lower P1, lower P2, lower P3, and lower P4 were the risk factors of PFF (P <.001, P <.001, P <.001, P <.001, P <.001, P =.010, P <.001, P =.002, P <.001, P <.001, and P =.007, respectively). The ranked importance of the risk factors for PFF was P3, CFI, osteoporosis, CBR, age, P4, P1, stem design, CCR, BMI, and P2. By establishing the characterization model of variable sectional area distributions, a cascade design method of torque converter based on variable sectional area distribution is proposed. Additionally, the corresponding collaborative design method for multi-impeller turbomachinery is proposed and further studied. The design cases of the impellers with different sectional area distributions are constructed through the response surface method, and the corresponding hydrodynamic characteristics are further compared and explored. However, the design of different impeller sectional area distributions for the optimal performance of the whole turbomachinery requires the collaborative design of each component's distribution results rather than a simple combination of such optimal impeller's area distribution result. Thus a collaborative design strategy is proposed, which can improve the pump's capacity performance by 8.83%, the maximum torque ratio performance can also increased by 6.33%, which proves that such a collaborative design method is an effective optimization design approach to improve the performance of the torque converter without altering the overall dimension. The experimental results of the optimal prototype show that the torque ratio reaches 5.33% higher than the original value, which indicates that such a collaborative optimization method for multi-impeller turbomachinery is effective and reliable. Automatic modulation recognition (AMR) stands as a pivotal operation within industrial cognitive radio systems. State-of-the-art real-valued convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have innovated modulation recognition but view complex signal components as separate real inputs, impairing signal phase integrity and model interpretability. This paper presents an innovative AMR method known as the CVCNN-LSTM. Our study aims to leverage CNNs in conjunction with a long short-term memory network (LSTM) to harness the strengths of both networks while mitigating their weaknesses. This approach enhances the learning of original I/Q signal features, thus improving recognition performance. The proposed network is composed of multiple LFLBs and an LSTM layer. Each LFLBs is primarily composed of a convolutional layer and an average pooling layer, which play a key role in enabling local correlation learning and hierarchical correlation extraction. Recognizing that I/Q data inherently possesses a complex-valued structure, we advocate using end-to-end complex-valued CNN and complex-valued LSTM instead of dual-channel real-valued networks for modulation recognition. This study presents a novel computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) designed for optically diagnosing colorectal polyps using white light imaging (WLI).We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the CADx and its auxiliary role among endoscopists with different levels of expertise. We collected 2,324 neoplastic and 3,735 nonneoplastic polyp WLI images for model training, and 838 colorectal polyp images from 740 patients for model validation. We compared the diagnostic accuracy of the CADx with that of 15 endoscopists under WLI and narrow band imaging (NBI). The auxiliary benefits of CADx for endoscopists of different experience levels and for identifying different types of colorectal polyps was also evaluated. The CADx demonstrated an optical diagnostic accuracy of 84.49%, showing considerable superiority over all endoscopists, irrespective of whether WLI or NBI was used (P < 0.001). Assistance from the CADx significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy of the endoscopists from 68.84% to 77.49% (P = 0.001), with the most significant impact observed among novice endoscopists. Notably, novices using CADx-assisted WLI outperform junior and expert endoscopists without such assistance. The CADx demonstrated a crucial role in substantially enhancing the precision of optical diagnosis for colorectal polyps under WLI and showed the greatest auxiliary benefits for novice endoscopists. Aiming to address soft sensing model degradation under changing working conditions, and to accommodate dynamic, nonlinear, and multimodal data characteristics, this paper proposes a nonlinear dynamic transfer soft sensor algorithm. The approach leverages time-delay data augmentation to capture dynamics and projects the augmented data into a latent space for constructing a nonlinear regression model. Two regular terms, distribution alignment regularity and first-order difference regularity, are introduced during data projection to address data distribution disparities. Laplace regularity is incorporated into the nonlinear regression model to ensure geometric structure preservation. The final optimization objective is formulated within the framework of partial least squares, and hyperparameters are determined using Bayesian optimization.
