Background: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a biomarker for the intrinsic stiffness of the aortic wall, and has been shown to be predictive for cardiovascular events. It can be assessed using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) from the delay between phase-contrast flow waveforms at two or more locations in the aorta, and the distance on CMR images between those locations. This study aimed to investigate the impact of different distance measurement methods on PWV. We present and evaluate an algorithm for automated centreline tracking in 3D images, and compare PWV calculations using distances derived from 3D images to those obtained from a conventional 2D oblique-sagittal image of the aorta. Methods: We included 35 patients from a twin cohort, and 20 post-coarctation repair patients. Phase-contrast flow was acquired in the ascending, descending and diaphragmatic aorta. A 3D centreline tracking algorithm is presented and evaluated on a subset of 30 subjects, on three CMR sequences: balanced steady-state free precession (SSFP), black-blood double inversion recovery turbo spin echo, and contrast-enhanced CMR angiography. Aortic lengths are subsequently compared between measurements from a 2D oblique-sagittal plane, and a 3D geometry. Results: The error in length of automated 3D centreline tracking compared with manual annotations ranged from 2.4 [1.8-4.3] mm (mean [IQR], black-blood) to 6.4 [4.7-8.9] mm (SSFP). The impact on PWV was below 0.5m/s (<5%). Differences between 2D and 3D centreline length were significant for the majority of our experiments (p < 0.05). Individual differences in PWV were larger than 0.5m/s in 15% of all cases (thoracic aorta) and 37% when studying the aortic arch only. Finally, the difference between end-diastolic and end-systolic 2D centreline lengths was statistically significant (p < 0.01), but resulted in small differences in PWV (0.08 [0.04 - 0.10]m/s). Conclusions: Automatic aortic centreline tracking in three commonly used CMR sequences is possible with good accuracy. The 3D length obtained from such sequences can differ considerably from lengths obtained from a 2D oblique-sagittal plane, depending on aortic curvature, adequate planning of the oblique-sagittal plane, and patient motion between acquisitions. Objective: Endograft migration is usually described as a downward displacement of the endograft with respect to the renal arteries. However, change in endograft position is actually a complex process in three-dimensional (3D) space. Currently, there are no established techniques to define such positional changes over time. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the direction of aortic endograft movement as observed in follow-up computed tomography (CT) scans is related to the directional displacement force acting on the endograft. Methods: We quantitated the 3D positional change over time of five abdominal endografts by determining the endograft centroid at baseline (postoperative scan) and on follow-up CT scans. The time interval between CT scans for the 5 patients ranged from 8 months to 8 years. We then used 3D image segmentation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to quantitate the pulsatile displacement force (in Newtons [N]) acting on the endografts in the postoperative configurations. Finally, we calculated a correlation metric between the direction of the displacement force vector and the endograft movement by computing the cosine of the angle of these two vectors. Results: The average 3D movement of the endograft centroid was 18 mm (range, 9-29 mm) with greater movement in patients with longer follow-up times. In all cases, the movement of the endograft had significant components in all three spatial directions: Two of the endografts had the largest component of movement in the transverse direction, whereas three endografts had the largest component of movement in the axial direction. The magnitude and orientation of the endograft displacement force varied depending on aortic angulation and hemodynamic conditions. The average magnitude of displacement force for all endografts was 5.8 N (range, 3.7-9.5 N). The orientation of displacement force was in general perpendicular to the greatest curvature of the endograft. The average correlation metric, defined as the cosine of the angle between the displacement force and the endograft centroid movement, was 0.38 (range, 0.08-0.66). Conclusions: Computational methods applied to patient-specific postoperative image data can be used to quantitate 3D displacement force and movement of endografts over time. It appears that endograft movement is related to the magnitude and direction of the displacement force acting on aortic endografts. Microstructural changes in the pulmonary arteries associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is not well understood and characterized in humans. To address this issue, we developed and applied a patient-specific inverse finite element (FE) modeling framework to characterize mechanical and structural changes of the micro-constituents in the proximal pulmonary arteries using in-vivo pressure measurements and magnetic resonance images. The framework was applied using data acquired from a pediatric PAH patient and a heart transplant patient with normal pulmonary arterial pressure, which serves as control. Parameters of a constrained mixture model that are associated with the structure and mechanical properties of elastin, collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells were optimized to fit the patient-specific pressure-diameter responses of the main pulmonary artery. Based on the optimized parameters, individual stress and linearized stiffness resultants of the three tissue constituents, as well as their aggregated values, were estimated in the pulmonary artery. Aggregated stress resultant and stiffness are, respectively, 4.6 and 3.4 times higher in the PAH patient than the control subject. Stress and stiffness resultants of each tissue constituent are also higher in the PAH patient. Specifically, the mean stress resultant is highest in elastin (PAH: 69.96, control: 14.42 kPa-mm), followed by those in smooth muscle cell (PAH: 13.95, control: 4.016 kPa-mm) and collagen fibers (PAH: 13.19, control: 2.908 kPa-mm) in both the PAH patient and the control subject. Suprarenal abdominal aortic coarctation (SAAC) alters flow and pressure patterns to the kidneys and is often associated with severe angiotensin-mediated hypertension refractory to drug therapy. SAAC is most often treated by a thoracoabdominal bypass (TAB) or patch aortoplasty (PA). It is currently unclear what effect these interventions have on renal flow and pressure waveforms. This study, using retrospective data from a patient with SAAC subjected to a TAB, undertook computational modeling to analyze aortorenal blood flow preoperatively as well as postoperatively after a variety of TAB and PA interventions. Patient-specific anatomic models were constructed from preoperative computed tomography angiograms of a 9-year-old child with an isolated SAAC. Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations of hemodynamics were performed to analyze preoperative renal flow and pressure waveforms. A parametric study was then performed to examine the hemodynamic impact of different bypass diameters and patch oversizing. Preoperative FSI results documented diastole-dominated renal perfusion with considerable high-frequency disturbances in blood flow and pressure. The postoperative TAB right and left kidney volumes increased by 58% and 79%, respectively, reflecting the increased renal artery blood flows calculated by the FSI analysis. Postoperative increases in systolic flow accompanied decreases in high-frequency disturbances, aortic pressure, and collateral flow after all surgical interventions. In general, lesser degrees of high-frequency disturbances followed PA interventions. High-frequency disturbances were eliminated with the 0% PA in contrast to the 30% and 50% PA oversizing and TAB interventions, in which these flow disturbances remained. Both TAB and PA dramatically improved renal artery flow and pressure waveforms, although disturbed renal waveforms remained in many of the surgical scenarios. Importantly, only the 0% PA oversizing scenario eliminated all high-frequency disturbances, resulting in nearly normal aortorenal blood flow. The study also establishes the relevance of patient-specific computational modeling in planning interventions for the midaortic syndrome. We performed computational fluid dynamics modeling to assess aortorenal blood flow in a child with a suprarenal abdominal aortic coarctation and to test the performance of different surgical interventions. We discovered high-frequency disturbances in the renal arteries that could potentially trigger excessive renin release. Thoracoabdominal bypass and patch aortoplasty with oversizing did not remove these disturbances completely. This could explain why the hypertension cure rates of surgical repair of suprarenal abdominal aortic coarctation are suboptimal. In addition, this study establishes the relevance of computational fluid dynamics modeling as a valuable tool to analyze complex hemodynamics and to test the performance of different surgical interventions. Objectives The complexity of aortic disease is not fully exposed by aortic dimensions alone, and morbidity or mortality can occur before intervention thresholds are met. Patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were used to assess the effect of different aortic valve morphologies on velocity profiles, flow patterns, helicity, wall shear stress (WSS), and oscillatory shear index (OSI) in the thoracic aorta. Methods A total of 45 subjects were divided into 5 groups: volunteers, aortic regurgitation-tricuspid aortic valve (AR-TAV), aortic stenosis-tricuspid aortic valve (AS-TAV), aortic stenosis-bicuspid aortic valve right-left cusp fusion (BAV[RL]), and aortic stenosis-right-non cusp fusion (AS-BAV[RN]). Subjects underwent magnetic resonance angiography, with phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging at the sino-tubular junction to define patient-specific inflow velocity profiles. Hemodynamic recordings were used alongside magnetic resonance imaging angiographic data to run patient-specific CFD. Results The BAV groups had larger mid-ascending aorta diameters ( P < .05). Ascending aorta flow was more eccentric in BAV (flow asymmetry = 78.9% ± 6.5% for AS-BAV(RN), compared with 4.7% ± 2.1% for volunteers, P < .05). Helicity was greater in AS-BAV(RL) ( P < .05). Mean WSS was elevated in AS groups, greatest in AS-BAV(RN) (37.1 ± 4.0 dyn/cm 2 , compared with 9.8 ± 5.4 for volunteers, P < .05). The greater curvature of the ascending aorta experienced highest WSS and lowest OSI in AS patients, most significant in AS-BAV(RN) ( P < .05). Conclusions BAV displays eccentric flow with high helicity. The presence of AS, particularly in BAV-RN, led to greater WSS and lower OSI in the greater curvature of the ascending aorta. Patient-specific CFD provides noninvasive functional assessment of the thoracic aorta, and may enable development of a personalized approach to diagnosis and management of aortic disease beyond traditional guidelines. Abstract: This paper presents a methodology combining experimental measurements with computational modeling to find the heat flux extracted during spray cooling of a metal surface. Controlled experiments are performed to impinge air-mist spray onto a metal probe surface while applying induction heating to follow a desired temperature history. A transient axisymmetric computational model of induction heating which couples electromagnetics and heat conduction has been developed and validated with a test problem. The model is calibrated to match transient dry measurements and then used to simulate a steady-state air-mist spray cooling experiment in order to quantify the heat extracted from the probe surface by the boiling water droplets. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease characterized by an elevated pulmonary arterial (PA) pressure. While several computational hemodynamic models of the pulmonary vasculature have been developed to understand PAH, they are lacking in some aspects, such as the vessel wall deformation and its lack of calibration against measurements in humans. Here, we describe a computational modeling framework that addresses these limitations. Specifically, computational models describing the coupling of hemodynamics and vessel wall mechanics in the pulmonary vasculature of a PAH patient and a normal subject were developed. Model parameters, consisting of linearized stiffness E of the large vessels and Windkessel parameters for each outflow branch, were calibrated against in vivo measurements of pressure, flow and vessel wall deformation obtained, respectively, from right-heart catheterization, phase-contrast and cine magnetic resonance images. Calibrated stiffness E of the proximal PA was 2.0 and 0.5 MPa for the PAH and normal models, respectively. Calibrated total compliance C T and resistance R T of the distal vessels were, respectively, 0.32 ml/mmHg and 11.3 mmHg∗min/l for the PAH model, and 2.93 ml/mmHg and 2.6 mmHg∗min/l for the normal model. These results were consistent with previous findings that the pulmonary vasculature is stiffer with more constricted distal vessels in PAH patients. Individual effects on PA pressure due to remodeling of the distal and proximal compartments of the pulmonary vasculature were also investigated in a sensitivity analysis. The analysis suggests that the remodeling of distal vasculature contributes more to the increase in PA pressure than the remodeling of proximal vasculature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The level of compaction induced on cultivated fields through trafficking is strongly influenced by the prevailing soil-water status and, depending on the attendant soil degradation, vital soil hydraulic processes could be affected. Therefore, understanding the relationship between field soil-water status and the corresponding level of induced compaction for a given load is considered an imperative step toward a better control of the occurrence of traffic-induced field soil compaction. Pore size distribution, a fundamental and highly degradable soil property, was measured in a Rhodic Ferralsol, the most productive and extensively distributed soil in Western Cuba, to study the effects of three levels of soil compaction on soil water characteristic parameters. Soil bulk density and cone penetration index were used to measure compaction levels established by seven passes of a 10 Mg tractor at three soil-water statuses corresponding to the plastic (Fs), friable (Fc) and relatively dry soil (Ds) consistency states. Pore size distribution calculated from soil water characteristic curves was classified into three pore size categories on the basis of their hydraulic functioning: >50 μm (f>50 μm), 50–0.5 μm (f50–0.5 μm) and <0.5 μm (f<0.5 μm). The greatest compaction levels were attained in the Fs and Fc soil water treatments, and a significant contribution to compaction was attributed to the existing soil water states under which the soil compaction was accomplished. Average cone index (CI) values in the range of 2.93–3.70 MPa reflected the accumulation of f<0.5 μm pores, and incurred severe reductions in the volume of f>50 μm pores in the Fs and Fc treatments, while an average CI value of 1.69 MPa indicated increments in the volume of f50–0.5 μm in the Ds treatment. Despite the differential effects of soil compaction on the distribution of the different pore size categories, soil total porosity (fTotal) was not effective in reflecting treatment effects. Soil water desorption at the soil water potentials evaluated (0.0 to −15,000 cm H2O) was adversely affected in the f<0.5 μm dominated treatments; strong soil water retention was observed with the predominance of f<0.5 μm, as was confirmed by the high water content at plant wilting point. Based on these findings, the use of field capacity water content as the upper limit of plant available soil water was therefore considered inappropriate for compacted soils. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
